Publications

For decades, the concept of enjoyment has been used to measure the psychological benefits of activities and has been shown to determine future behavior toward activities and objects of interest. However, there has been little consensus on the definition and dimensionality of enjoyment. This study introduced a new measure of enjoyment with scale development and validation reported. CFA and EFA findings from 1466 participants across 739 different activities were reported. The instrument developed measured enjoyment across activities, with demonstrated content validity, internal consistency, discriminant and convergent validity. The final 25-item version of the ENJOY scale is composed of 5 factors: …

Easing The Postpartum Return To Work: Workplace Resources, Work Interference With Family, And Health Behaviors, Aashna M. Waiwood

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While work-family matters continue to receive increasing attention, one group that faces considerable health, childcare, and work adjustment challenges has remained relatively ignored and understudied – postpartum mothers returning to employment. Driven by the work-home resources model as theoretical backing, I used path analytic methods to examine the mechanisms by which key workplace resources for postpartum women, including family-focused support from organizational stakeholders, flexibility availability, and breastfeeding resources, relate to their subsequent perceptions of work interference with family and engagement in physical activity and high quality/quantity sleep. Specifically, four waves of data were collected from a sample of 129 women …

Economic Analysis Of Southern Highbush Blueberry Production Using Drip Irrigation And Frost Protection In Georgia, Usa, Saurav Raj Kunwar, Esendugue Greg Fonsah

The Journal of Extension

A partial enterprise budget simply evaluates the costs and returns profile of the agricultural firm. The simplicity in the partial enterprise budget comes with a cost that it lacks accuracy as it uses fixed single estimates and ignores potential variation in the components of the agricultural production processes. We study risk-rated returns from southern highbush blueberry production using a drip irrigation system under 5 scenarios of the blueberry prices and yields. The risk-rated return analysis gauges the returns over total costs under different specified situations addressing possible uncertainty. We show the chance of profit from southern highbush blueberry in Georgia …

A Playworker’S Musings On The Perceptions And Importance Of ’Mess’ In A Play Space., Angus Ian Gorrie

International Journal of Playwork Practice

The aesthetics of any given play environment is often subject to immense scrutiny, often at the behest of adult agendas. This paper will, from a playwork practitioner’s perspective, discuss how aspects of perceptive mess in a play space positively affect play, the physical opportunities for children, their wellbeing, sense of belonging and their ability to create a sense of order as they see it. This will be juxtaposed against the situations in which children find themselves, by adult design, that paradoxically have the opposite effect. The author has drawn heavily from aspects of playwork theory and practice in the development …

Ensuring Abortion Rights For Womxn*, Mary Dillon Feb 2022

Ensuring Abortion Rights For Womxn*, Mary Dillon

2022 HCIR

Abortion is not just a women's issue, but a serious topic for all people who have a uterus. Whether they are trans, nonbinary, or intersex, the fight for abortion rights is also their fight. Giving them a voice is essential to the fight for abortion as not only is banning abortion blatantly anti-women but anti-trans. The misogynistic and homophobic bills across the country that have severely limited access to abortions need to be stopped. Additionally, to ensure Roe stays in place, The Women's Health Protection Act must be passed in order to save abortion nationwide.

Banning The Unethical Practices Of Puppy Mills In Every State, Carolyn Dering Feb 2022

Banning The Unethical Practices Of Puppy Mills In Every State, Carolyn Dering

2022 HCIR

My presentation brings to light the inhumane and unethical practices within the commercial dog breeding industry. It is legal in most U.S. states for puppy mills to force dogs to live in deplorable conditions. The government takes little action in implementing and enforcing regulations regarding the care of the animals. I state the need for the Puppy Protection Act of 2021 to be added to the Animal Welfare Act. This bill would enforce that dogs in the commercial dog breeding industry be given proper care, therefore, bettering the lives of the animals.

Native Americans And The Criminal Justice System, Kenneth Foster Feb 2022

Native Americans And The Criminal Justice System, Kenneth Foster

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership

How does Native American culture affect policing and victim services? There are many contributors, including awareness and past traumas such as historical oppression and forced removal from homelands. Even though the people responsible for those actions are not around today, mistrust is still prevalent in the community. Ethical considerations must be incorporated into practice to bridge the gap with the shortcomings in the Native American community, such as trust, policing, and victim services. This is done by implementing utilitarianism, deontology, and administrative oversight. The inception of the Tribal Police is unique, as it started in 1800 and grew into modern-day …

Revisiting Prejudiced Polygons: Adapting A Familiar Activity During A Time Of Unknowns, Anne M. Ho, Jaime J. Mccauley, Tara T. Craig

Journal of Math Circles

This article describes the design process behind various iterations of Prejudiced Polygons, a Math Circles activity about segregation. In particular, we frame our discussion around two guiding principles from User Experience (UX) Design in thinking about the interconnected components of a Math Circles session, which includes all the people, the physical or virtual setting, the technology, and the world context. Additionally, we describe how we think about developing a “low floor" and “high ceiling" for math content, social issues content, as well as technology and access.

A Preliminary Pilot Study In A Sicilian Cohort With Centenarians., Anna Aiello, Giulia Accardi, Sawan Alì, Calogero Caruso, Maxine Chen, Immaculata De Vivo, Mattia Emanuela Ligotti, Giovanni Scapagnini, Sergio Davinelli, Giuseppina Candore

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

Telomere length (TL) is considered a biomarker of ageing although this topic is still debated. Also, sleep pattern changes are physiological part of the normal ageing process. In fact, it is widely recognized that sleep duration declines with age, leading to dysregulation of circadian rhythms. The aim of our study was to analyse the possible association of sleep duration with TL in a sample of 135 subjects with ages ranging from 20 to 111 years, recruited from Palermo and neighbouring municipalities in Sicily (Italy). Preliminary data suggest that relative TL (RTL) decreases with age in both men and women. However, …

Human Performance Department Publications

June 23, 2022 will mark the 50th anniversary of Title IX; during that time frame there has been a drastic increase in girl’s and women’s participation in sport. There has also been significant political debate and push back to Title IX which has threatened to undermine the impact of the law. Over the last 10 years, Title IX has been synonymous with litigation related to sexual harassment and transgender athlete participation in sport. Additionally, universities have continually sought to cut women’s sports under the guise of budgetary constraints. The purpose of this poster presentation is three-fold: 1) Review recent case …

Is A Rainbow Pink Or Blue? Creating Jail Policies For Transgender Inmates, Hunter Schultz Feb 2022

Is A Rainbow Pink Or Blue? Creating Jail Policies For Transgender Inmates, Hunter Schultz

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership

The United States prison system functions on a binary of male and female inmates. Transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and intersex individuals challenge the limits of these systems and their policies. This paper addresses how to create policy for transgender individuals and what the policies should include. The best practice for creating policies involves basing them in solid ethics. Looking at different ethical theories will help solve ethical dilemmas involving housing, searching, and other policies for transgender and gender non-conforming inmates. To ensure that policies coincide with the law, an examination of case law provides the legal background for these policies. …
