Reference Service, Government Information, And Covid-19, Angela Hackstadt, Abigail D. Adams

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The authors designed and distributed two surveys to answer the questions of whether the 2020 federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic affected academic librarians’ trust in government information, and whether it affected the way they use government information professionally. The results showed a limited decrease in trust in 2020, somewhat mitigated by the administration turnover in 2021. Many librarians already discussed considerations such as bias, authority, and disinformation when recommending government information to students, and others indicated they are more likely to do so going forward. They will also use or suggest more caution with government documents than before. Reference …

Exploration Of Treatment Resistance In A Parenting Skills Group For At-Risk Mothers, Thomas Boyer Feb 2022

Exploration Of Treatment Resistance In A Parenting Skills Group For At-Risk Mothers, Thomas Boyer

Tennessee Posters at the Capitol

Treatment resistance is a consistent impediment across psychological interventions. Specifically, the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences, and symptoms of depression, have both been posited to contribute to this phenomenon. This is noteworthy, particularly in parenting interventions, given that maternal ACEs and depression are predictors of suboptimal parenting outcomes and thus the risk factors that increase need for intervention may simultaneously be the very factors that impede with one’s intervention engagement. This study explored if this phenomenon replicates in Mom Power - a 10-week, trauma-informed, parenting skills group for at-risk mothers. A multiple linear regression was performed to predict intervention attendance …

Mindset Matters: The Relations Between Growth Mindset And Academic And Career Variables Among First-Generation College Students, Dillon Harper

Master's Theses

Can altering the perception of failure change future performance? Growth Mindset (GM) has been investigated for several decades, and studies have indicated that altering the way people perceive failure can impact certain levels of performance like academic achievement. The individual who endorses a GM views a challenge or failure not as a defeat and submission of inability, but a recognition that further growth, persistence, and effort are required to accomplish the desired task. This project aimed to understand more about first generation college students (FGCS) who endorse a growth mindset. Specifically, the intention of the study was to understand how …

Clean Energy Project Development For Low-Income Communities: Strengthening The Ecosystem For Delivering Solar Energy And Deep Efficiency Retrofits, Eric Hangen

Carsey School of Public Policy

Scaling clean energy in low-income communities through solar and deep efficiency retrofits presents financing challenges, but that is only part of the problem. Drawing on research conducted by the Carsey School’s Center for Impact Finance, this white paper outlines a road map depicting the ecosystem needed to deliver clean energy projects to underserved communities.

In a “tour” through this ecosystem, author Eric Hangen reviews examples of the work different organizations are doing in each of its niches, as well as which niches seem to be richly populated and which niches need more support and investment. Main conclusions from the tour …

Integrating Natural Language Processing And Interpretive Thematic Analyses To Gain Human-Centered Design Insights On Hiv Mobile Health: Proof-Of-Concept Analysis, Simone J. Skeen, Stephen Scott Jones, Carolyn Marie Cruse, Keith J. Horvath Feb 2022

Integrating Natural Language Processing And Interpretive Thematic Analyses To Gain Human-Centered Design Insights On Hiv Mobile Health: Proof-Of-Concept Analysis, Simone J. Skeen, Stephen Scott Jones, Carolyn Marie Cruse, Keith J. Horvath

Publications and Research

Background: HIV mobile health (mHealth) interventions often incorporate interactive peer-to-peer features. The user-generated content (UGC) created by these features can offer valuable design insights by revealing what topics and life events are most salient for participants, which can serve as targets for subsequent interventions. However, unstructured, textual UGC can be difficult to analyze. Interpretive thematic analyses can preserve rich narratives and latent themes but are labor-intensive and therefore scale poorly. Natural language processing (NLP) methods scale more readily but often produce only coarse descriptive results. Recent calls to advance the field have emphasized the untapped potential of combined NLP …

Spatial Downscaling Of Goes-R Land Surface Temperature Over Urban Regions: A Case Study For New York City, Abdou Bah, Hamidreza Norouzi, Satya Prakash, Reginald Blake, Reza Khanbilvardi, Cynthia Rosenzweig

Publications and Research

The surface urban heat island (SUHI) effect is among the major environmental issues encountered in urban regions. To better predict the dynamics of the SUHI and its impacts on extreme heat events, an accurate characterization of the surface energy balance in urban regions is needed. However, the ability to improve understanding of the surface energy balance is limited by the heterogeneity of surfaces in urban areas. This study aims to enhance the understanding of the urban surface energy budget through an innovation in the use of land surface temperature (LST) observations from remote sensing satellites. A LST database with 5–min …

Caregivers Need Care, Too: Conceptualising Spiritual Care For Migrant Caregivers-Transnational Mothers, Ma. Adeinev M. Reyes-Espiritu

Theology Department Faculty Publications

Growing research revolving around the plight of (Philippine) migrant domestic workers is noteworthy. However, the focus is largely on their role, capacity and identity as caregivers, meaning as labour migrants and transnational mothers engaged in both paid and unpaid care work. Building on the “care circulation” framework of Baldassar and Merla that conceptualises care as given and received in varying degrees by all family members across time and distance, this paper takes up the task of recognising migrant domestic workers as care receivers. In a particular way, this paper conceptualises care for migrant caregivers-transnational mothers that is based on a …

Foreign Interventionism In The Sahel Against Violent Extremism: The French Dilemma, Andrews Nii Amaah Amartey

Major Papers

The Sahel region is progressively becoming a hot zone for violent extremist activities and the consistent splintering of groups keeps facilitating its spread into sub-Saharan Africa. This ever-growing threat has triggered varied responses from both states, regional and international actors respectively. As far as international response goes, France plays a leading role in the fight against violent extremism with the basis of its intervention hinged on the 'special relationship' France has with the affected countries in the Sahel which are all French-speaking states. This has eventually led many to question France's commitment to a joint multilateral response as this is …

The Conceptualisation Of The Provisioning Of Assistive Resources For Patrons With Visual Impairment Within Academic Libraries In Zimbabwe, Mthokozisi Masumbika Ncube, Chipo Mutongi, Mercy Kurebwa

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The introduction of assistive resources within academic libraries in the 20th century positively affected library users (patrons) since they eased information access challenges for patrons living with impairments. However, most academic libraries in developing countries are still grappling with challenges relating to ensuring adequate services to patrons with visual impairment. Given this problem, this paper seeks to provide a better overview and understanding of what provisioning of assistive resources entails. Such an understanding would aid decision-making in academic libraries on the specific resources that should be acquired for patrons with visual impairment. In addition, this paper also went on …
