Generation Onlyfans: The Internalization Of Objectification In Young Adults, Grace Sinclair, D. Gage Jordan Jan 2022

Generation Onlyfans: The Internalization Of Objectification In Young Adults, Grace Sinclair, D. Gage Jordan

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The term raunch culture refers to recent changes in Western culture that promotes overtly sexual representations of women, wherein women are objectified, objectify one another, and are encouraged to objectify themselves. With the growth of the internet and social media, raunch culture has expanded rapidly. This hypersexualized culture provides people opportunities to engage in positive social comparison, but perhaps more insidiously, negative social comparison. Although some women perceive aspects of raunch culture as empowering, it is possible that this construct could relate to the phenomenology of depression in women. This study examined the various relationships between raunch culture, depression, social …

Don’T You Know That They’Re Toxic: Parasocial Attachments And Fictional Relationships, Morgan Macke, Jana Hackathorn

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Problem or Major Purpose. Parasocial relationships are one-sided interactions individuals have with fictional characters or famous celebrities (Derrick et al., 2008). Parasocial relationships can be beneficial for the exploration and development of one’s own romantic emotions, sexuality, or ideal self (Derrick et al., 2008; Erikson & Dal Cin, 2018). Conversely, there may be drawbacks such as unrealistic expectations and dysfunctional beliefs (Spiranec, 2018). For example, the young adult genre often contains harmful tropes that expose the audience to dysfunctional relationship behaviors such as portraying abuse as romantic, normalizing slut shaming, and fetishizing virginity (Spiranec, 2018). The current study examines the …

Excessive Use Of Social Media And Its Impact On The Values Of The Institution Of Marriage «The Case Study Of The Lebanese Society», Rabea Yakan

Al Jinan الجنان

In light of the acceleration of contemporary human life at all levels, the matrimonial institution faces in Lebanon a large number of challenges and difficulties due to digital development and unlimited openness, so that this institution is no longer the basic building block to instill values and adjust the rhythm of life as it was before, but perhaps It has become the weakest link in that process, as it faces a process of fragmentation by many modern electronic means and others, as it may no longer be as strong and cohesive as it has in a previous crisis, so that …

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

By following the films of directors Akira Kurosawa ( 黒澤明), Yasujiro Ozu ( 小津安二郎), Masaki Kobayashi (小林正樹), and Shohei Imamura (今村昌平) around occupation period Japan, unified visions for Japanese society are formed as it transitions from wartime into the postwar era. Each of these films conveys a sense of rapid change in society, external pressures and foreign influence, a daily struggle, and immediate postwar suffering. Not only can these films be seen across a wide variety of styles, but they also each approach these issues with immediacy and show tentative outlooks for how Japan functioned and felt for most people …

Psychology Faculty Work

Background: Autistic individuals frequently experience social communication challenges. Girls are diagnosed with autism less often than boys even when their symptoms are equally severe, which may be due to insufficient understanding of the way autism manifests in girls. Differences in the behavioral presentation of autism, including how people talk about social topics, could contribute to these persistent problems with identification. Despite a growing body of research suggesting that autistic girls and boys present distinct symptom profiles in a variety of domains, including social attention, friendships, social motivation, and language, differences in the way that autistic boys and girls communicate …

The Populist Paradox: A Critical Framework Proposal, Megan Morrell, Seth Masket Jan 2022

The Populist Paradox: A Critical Framework Proposal, Megan Morrell, Seth Masket

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

Donald Trump’s presidency has undeniably reignited academic interest in understanding the populist phenomenon and its political implications. Trumpian politics are frequently considered to be a stark departure from status quo politics, in favor of a radical right populism. Yet, the Trump presidency and populist theory itself poses a key contradiction, namely a populist paradox. I will propose a critical framework to understand populism as a mechanism of political power by the liberal state. In What is Populism?, Jan-Werner Müller identifies a contradictory nature to populism, as it often perpetuates the same political problems that the populist politics sought to replace. …

The Effects Of Onlooker Gender And Restrictive Emotionality On Help-Seeking Behavior, Kassidy M. Patarino, Mia Mclaughlin, Amelia Trembath, Chris Gunderson, E. Paige Lloyd

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

Endorsing traits associated with masculinity, such as restrictive emotionality (RE), may have negative implications for the health and well-being of both male and female individuals, specifically in terms of help-seeking. The current work examines whether gender of an onlooker (i.e., a coworker) impacts participants’ self-reported likelihood to seek help for a physical ailment or injury in the workplace. We also investigate if RE moderated the relationship between onlooker gender and intent to seek help. We hypothesize that participants would be more likely to seek help from a female (vs. male) coworker and this anticipated effect would be exacerbated for those …
