hosting visitors, accessioning objects, creating educator activities, and drafting up a history and sustainability webpage for them to possibly use in the future. Of my three days a week working at the museum, half of my time was spent hosting visitors. I would open and close the museum and answer any questions people might have about the museum. This might include showing them around the exhibits, telling them some more indepth information about the Methow Valley, or even telling them more about what I was doing there, and what kind of work I was doing. I was able to learn …

analyze integrative approaches towards understanding socio-ecological interactions and critically examine methods of conducting environmental work. These objectives were achieved as I learnt about the effects of anthropogenic marine debris on the Salish Sea environment. Chemical compounds located in marine waste have long-lasting and fatal effects on the fauna of marine environments. Additionally, I developed a greater understanding of environmental work through collaboration with government and non-governmental organizations.

The invasive European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) have spread from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, becoming a matter of concern in waterbodies throughout the Salish Sea. The possible establishment and growth of this invasive species poses risks to the native species, that thousands of people rely on for their livelihood and for the seafood industry in the Pacific Northwest. I completed and internship with the Northwest Straits Commission (NWSC) working in an emergency response trapping effort to trap invasive European Green Crabs (EGC) in Drayton Harbor, WA to help protect and conserve the native species from their devastating …

Guiding A Human Follower With Interaction Forces: Implications On Physical Human-Robot Interaction, George L. Holmes, Keyri Moreno Bonnett, Amy Costa, Devin Michael Burns, Yun Seong Song

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work challenges the common assumption in physical human-robot interaction (pHRI) that the movement intention of a human user can be simply modeled with dynamic equations relating forces to movements, regardless of the user. Studies in physical human-human interaction (pHHI) suggest that interaction forces carry sophisticated information that reveals motor skills and roles in the partnership and even promotes adaptation and motor learning. In this view, simple force-displacement equations often used in pHRI studies may not be sufficient. To test this, this work measured and analyzed the interaction forces (F) between two humans as the leader guided the blindfolded follower …

The Risk Protection Order: Protection From Mass Homicide?, Brooke Elvington Jan 2022

The Risk Protection Order: Protection From Mass Homicide?, Brooke Elvington

Theses and Dissertations

Gun control measures, referred to as “risk protection orders” or “Red Flag” laws, are expanding with widespread public support. Currently, 19 states have similar legislation, varying in procedural approaches and enforcement to reduce firearm-related homicide, emphasizing mass homicide. However, little is known about whether the legislation is effective. The following questions are presented: (1) Is there a difference between rates of firearm related homicide incidences prior to and after the creation of Florida’s “Red Flag” law? (2) Do risk protection orders target individuals demonstrating known mass homicide offender typology characteristics? The study used data derived from open-source resources. An interrupted …

Premarital Counseling And Christianity: A Composition Of Couples Intuition And Understanding As It Relates To Marital Satisfaction, Sheila Delores Salley

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Increasing divorce rates in the United States of America have resulted in Premarital Counseling (PMC) gaining grave popularity over the last couple of decades. There has been a proliferation of premarital counseling programs in the United States of America since the 1930s with a thrust toward building and sustaining satisfying marriages. Traditional premarital counseling programs focus on ensuring satisfaction once the couple is married; however, there is a significant gap in researching the impact of incorporating Christian values as a means of therapeutic intervention. This study involved eight Christian, African American, heterosexual couples who received Christian-based PMC (CPMC) and have …

The 2012 amendments to the Evidence Act “significantly broadened the admissibility criteria for expert evidence”; at the same time, the judicial discretion to deny admissibility of relevant expert opinion evidence was also introduced. This article considers the key developments pre- and post-amendments, and in doing so provides an updated framework for prosecutors and defence counsel alike to admit and challenge expert opinion evidence in criminal proceedings. Since it complements earlier articles in this series on similar fact and hearsay evidence, readers are assumed to be broadly familiar with the features of the Evidence Act, such as its admissibility paradigm, the …

Creating The Habitus Of Tolerance In Indonesian Schools: Normative, Praxis, And Symbolic Dimensions, Indera Ratna Irawati Pattinasarany, Lucia Ratih Kusumadewi, Aditya Pradana Setiadi

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

In a multicultural society, tolerance is an important prerequisite for maintaining social order in communal life. Schools are one of the most important loci for habituating a character and culture of tolerance. However, most studies that have been carried out tend to focus more on the problem of intolerance in schools, and have not explored how the habitus of tolerance can be created and practiced instead. This research is a study on how nine schools in seven different cities across Indonesia have developed their own habitus of tolerance. We employed a qualitative research method with in-depth interviews, observa¬tion, and document …

Addressing Work-Related Traumatic Stress Nebraska - Theory Of Change, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

Other QIC-WD Products

Several workforce challenges were discussed as opportunities for intervention during the needs assessment process conducted partnership with the Nebraska Department of Children and Family Services’ (DCFS) to address child welfare workforce turnover. Through a series of steps and causal links, a theory of change provides a roadmap to address the root causes of an identified workforce problem and describes how and why changes are expected to lead to the desired outcomes. Ultimately, two theories of change were developed to step through the “if, then” logic:

  1. building resiliency skills within child welfare workers and supervisors; and
  2. implementing a debriefing protocol focused …

The Minor Fall, The Major Lift? College Students Do Not Report Listening To Mood-Congruent Music, Hannah N. Leonhardt, James Bunde, Andrew Beer

University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal

Music has become an integral part of daily life in Western culture. Individuals use music for various purposes including emotion regulation, and each individual has different tendencies and preferences for how they use music. Previous research indicates that people are likely to listen to mood-congruent music and that personality characteristics--specifically those of the Big 5 personality inventory-- may predict music preference and how people choose to use music for emotion regulation.

To further address these questions, we assessed personality and music usage in a sample of undergraduate students. We predicted that affect-related traits like Neuroticism and Extraversion would predict both …

Political Identity Biases Americans’ Judgments Of Outgroup Emotion, Ruby Basyouni, Nicholas R. Harp, Ingrid J. Haas, Maital Neta Jan 2022

Political Identity Biases Americans’ Judgments Of Outgroup Emotion, Ruby Basyouni, Nicholas R. Harp, Ingrid J. Haas, Maital Neta

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Social group identity plays a central role in political polarization and inter-party conflict. Here, we use ambiguously valenced faces to measure bias in the processing of political ingroup and outgroup faces, while also accounting for interparty differences in judgments of emotion at baseline. Participants identifying as Democrats and Republicans judged happy, angry, and surprised faces as positive or negative. Whereas happy and angry faces convey positive and negative valence respectively, surprised faces are ambiguous in that they readily convey positive and negative valence. Thus, surprise is a useful tool for characterizing valence bias (i.e., the tendency to judge ambiguous stimuli …
