A Micro-Typology Of Contact Effects In Four Tibeto-Burman Languages, Kristine Hildebrandt, Oliver Bond, Dubi Nanda Dhakal
A Micro-Typology Of Contact Effects In Four Tibeto-Burman Languages, Kristine Hildebrandt, Oliver Bond, Dubi Nanda Dhakal
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
When minority languages with similar typological profiles are in long-term contact with a genealogically unrelated socioeconomically dominant language, the perfect context is provided for investigating which observed contact effects are demonstrably allied to sociolinguistic dynamics rather than purely structural ones. This paper investigates the factors determining the different extent of contact effects in four Tibeto-Burman languages (Gurung, Gyalsumdo, Nar-Phu, and Manange) spoken in a geo-politically defined and multilingual region of Nepal. Using corpus data and sociolinguistic interviews collected in the field, we demonstrate that a range of social, economic and geo-spatial factors contribute to asymmetries where contact effects are observed …
Sportisation And Values Of Competition : The Case Of Yo-Yoing, Ho Wang, Danny Kwong
Sportisation And Values Of Competition : The Case Of Yo-Yoing, Ho Wang, Danny Kwong
Bachelor of Social Sciences – Senior Theses
Yo-yoing was a popular pastime in the 90s. It has now developed as a sport with standard rules. This research locates competitive yo-yoing within the sociology of sports, specifically, it builds on the lifestyle sports literature. I understand yo-yoing as a lifestyle sport, serious leisure, and subculture. I argue that competition is a site of meaning-making in competitive yo-yoing and delineate the community’s response to sportisation through interviews with 15 yo-yo players in Hong Kong and an examination of a Netflix documentary on yo-yo. The findings suggest 2 implications: a re-visit to the anti-competition discourse among lifestyle sports, and, a …
The Effect Of Contextual Uncertainty On Confidence Judgements In Perception And Its Relation To Metacognition, Wing Kiu Lam
The Effect Of Contextual Uncertainty On Confidence Judgements In Perception And Its Relation To Metacognition, Wing Kiu Lam
Bachelor of Social Sciences – Senior Theses
Our brain processes noisy and incomplete information to make adaptive decisions and chooses appropriate responses based on the strength of our subjective evaluation. Such subjective evaluation of our decisions could be referred to our metacognition— the ability to monitor and recognize our own successful cognitive processing. What information does our metacognitive system take in during subjective evaluation? To what extent our metacognitive judgements are influenced by the context? The current study aims to investigate whether there is an effect of contextual uncertainty on confidence judgments when perceptual performance is controlled. In this study, participants were required to perform both type …

Vicarious Trauma Experienced By Human Trafficking Victim Service Providers, V'Hesspa Glenn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Human trafficking involves the commercial exploitation of others for labor or sexual purposes and is underreported, underdetected, and underprosecuted. Vicarious trauma is described as negative reactions to working with individuals experiencing complex trauma and includes changes in helping professionals’ self and disruptions in cognitive schemas, identities, memories, and belief systems about others and the world. Many researchers have explored various aspects of human trafficking and secondary trauma in trauma-exposed helping professionals, but there is a dearth of qualitative literature that explored vicarious trauma in human trafficking victim service providers. The research question and purpose of this qualitative, interpretative phenomenological study …

Effectively Communicating Ethics Using Procedural And Distributive Justice: An Exploratory Study, Yolonda L. Holmes-Echols
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Organizational justice influences employees’ citizenship behaviors and performance. Work environments characterized by unfair or unjust treatment are associated with low job commitment, dissatisfaction, demotivation, nonperformance, and high turnover. There was a need to explore the perception of variable justice in healthcare organizations grappling with a perennial shortage of skilled health professionals and high levels of turnover. In addition, reports of injustices in nonprofits in the health care sector made it challenging for the organizations to attract and retain volunteers. This qualitative exploratory study investigated how employees of the Mercy Clinic perceived fairness and how variable justice exists as part of …

Executive Job Motivation: A Non-Profit Perspective, Jacques Kalume Mambo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractNonprofit organization (NPO) executives, who serve others while accepting substantial salary and benefit packages, may be motivated by extrinsic and intrinsic elements of their job satisfaction. Yet little is known about the extent to which executives are motivated by altruism alone or by financial compensation and other extrinsic rewards. The purpose of this quantitative study was to test the extent to which intrinsic and extrinsic motivation was correlated with the job satisfaction of NPO executives. The theoretical framework was Ryan and Deci’s self-determination theory, which suggest NPO executives may be solely satisfied through intrinsic motivation. A stratified random sample of …

The Effect Of Female Leadership On Organizational Effectiveness In The Nigerian Oil And Gas Sector, Kadilo Badom
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractFemale participation in economic production remains a vital discourse in the public space irrespective of the type of activity or economic jurisdiction. The Nigerian economy is not left out as successive governments in the country have continued to encourage the participation of women in governance, public institutions, and private sector firms. These targeted efforts notwithstanding, there are still sectors where male dominance remains a major issue. Prior research shows that among the reasons for not promoting females to leadership positions include specific organizational stereotypes, ideologies, lack of female motivation-to-lead, and societal values, and lack of role-models. Within the Nigerian oil …
