An Exploratory Study Of Future Plans And Preferences For Long-Term Services And Support For Older Kenyan Immigrants, Lenah Chepngetich Langat

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Quality of life and client’s satisfaction with Long-term Services and Support (LTSS) in later life are influenced by care preference and timely plans. Ethnic, and racial disparities in the use of both informal formal and formal LTSS are reported. Consequently, the diversity in LTSS decision-making has gained attention in research and policy with a predominant focus on migration background, acculturation, and ethnicity. However, LTSS preference data for older Kenyan immigrants are homogenized into the African Americans block without the acknowledgment of their inherent cultural and ethnic diversity. The development of culturally competent, effective, and responsive policies across the LTSS continuum …

Regulating For Energy Justice, Alexandra B. Klass, Gabriel Chan Jan 2022

Regulating For Energy Justice, Alexandra B. Klass, Gabriel Chan

Articles

In this Article, we explore and critique the foundational norms that shape federal and state energy regulation and suggest pathways for reform that can incorporate principles of “energy justice.” These energy justice principles—developed in academic scholarship and social movements—include the equitable distribution of costs and benefits of the energy system, equitable participation and representation in energy decision making, and restorative justice for structurally marginalized groups.

While new legislation, particularly at the state level, is critical to the effort to advance energy justice, our focus here is on regulators’ ability to implement reforms now using their existing authority to advance the …

Technology’S Impact On Students In A Virtual Environment, Leah S. Sorensen Jan 2022

Technology’S Impact On Students In A Virtual Environment, Leah S. Sorensen

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In 2020, a worldwide pandemic ensued as the coronavirus spread throughout the United States. This caused a nationwide shutdown, closing schools. All forms of education went to a virtual learning setting, where all students were expected to learn outside of a classroom. This also meant that there became a heavy reliance on technology. This setting and use of technology began to affect students’ learning and development. Through conducted research, three domains of child development are evaluated to determine the effects of this form of learning. The cognitive, physical, and social-emotional domains will be considered.

A Swipe To The Right: Exploring Tinder Use In College Students, Madisyn Smith

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

A Swipe to the Right: Exploring Tinder Use in College students set out to explore different ways in which college students used the dating application Tinder . More specifically, the study focused on what kind of relationships college-aged users were hoping to form on Tinder (i.e. committed, casual, or neither) and what factors determined whether these users swiped right versus left on other Tinder users. This study was conducted by way of five qualitative, semi-structured, one-on-one interviews between participant and researcher. While Tinder is commonly thought of as a "hookup app", the results of the interviews proved otherwise; college students …

The Relationship Between Cognitive Distortions, Humor Styles, Coping Humor, And Self-Confidence, Emma Dudones Jan 2022

The Relationship Between Cognitive Distortions, Humor Styles, Coping Humor, And Self-Confidence, Emma Dudones

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Cognitive distortion is an error in thinking believed to increase susceptibility to depression (Burns, 1980; Dozois & Beck, 2008). Research shows Affiliative and Self-Enhancing humor styles are associated with less cognitive distortion, while Aggressive and Self-Defeating humor styles are associated with greater cognitive distortion (Rnic et al., 2016). The current study examines those relationships and extends the research by examining whether coping humor and self-confidence relate to humor styles and cognitive distortion. 210 college students took the Humor Styles Questionnaire, the Cognitive Distortions Questionnaire, the Coping Humor Scale, and the Internal and External Self-Confidence Scales. The maladaptive humor styles were …

Analysis Of Artifacts And Storage Organization: Clinton Lock 2, Hannah Curtis

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

For this project, we are hoping to address the potential problems and help refine future work between the storage in the Cummings Center and the Anthropology Department. Some of the research questions that we have are: What is in the Cummings Center from the Anthropology Department? What type of techniques is the most beneficial in storing archaeological material? How are the items stored in the Cummings Center? Is this method of storage going to protect or damage the artifact? Do we still need to keep this material, returned to its original owner, or can it be deaccessioned? We plan to …

Western Diet In Adulthood, Timing Of Menarche, And Economic Status Among Northeast Ohioans, Kailey Maroni, Anne Wiley Phd, Nicole M. Burt Phd, Randall J. Mitchell Phd

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

I studied the age at first menstruation as a predictor of Western diet consumption among adults at The University of Akron and in Cleveland. I used stable carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions of human hair, as well as surveyed consumption of foods important to a Western diet (red meat, sugar, and dairy), to understand whether participants aligned with a Western dietary pattern. Age at survey and adult economic status were investigated as potential confounding variables. My data analysis and conclusions for this project has been completed and approved by my advisor and committee. To maintain collaborators' ability to publish a …

The Correlation Between Work Empowerment And The Ownership Of Feminist Beliefs In Working College Women, Taylor Marino Jan 2022

The Correlation Between Work Empowerment And The Ownership Of Feminist Beliefs In Working College Women, Taylor Marino

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The correlation between work empowerment and attitudes of feminism in people who identify as women while simultaneously working and attending college has not previously been assessed. The aim of this study is to identify what relationship, if any, exists between these constructs. The scales utilized will be the work empowerment scale developed by Spreitzer (1995) and the FEM scale developed by Smith, Ferree, and Miller (1975). Based on previous literature, it can be hypothesized that greater feminist attitudes will be correlated with higher levels of work empowerment.

Coming Out In Later Adulthood: Are The Stresses Different?, Chris Ng

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The goal of the present study is to investigate whether there is a difference between people who “come out” at a later age compared to those who came out at a “younger age.” There is a dearth of research on the stress of sexual minorities in general and even less research done on the stress of older sexual minorities. The present study also aims to investigate whether

The hypotheses for the present study include the following:

Hypothesis 1: Older LGB adults will have greater Internalized Homonegativity.

Hypothesis 2: Perceived Social Support from Family and Friends will mediate the relationship between …

Reaching A Compromise Between Left And Right-Wing Parties, Claire Jimerson Jan 2022

Reaching A Compromise Between Left And Right-Wing Parties, Claire Jimerson

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

With each new headline that emerges, America becomes more and more politically polarized, and compromise between the two extremes seems more and more impossible. Adding to this struggle is the fading spirit for reaching this compromise. Unfortunately, however, with each headline that emerges, the need for respect and compromise also becomes ever more urgent. The foremost issues of our time -- immigration, health care, gun control, and social justice, to name a few -- will remain issues if there is no leeway from either side. This paper will serve as an attempt at two things. First, it will look at …

The Pathology And Etiology Of Philosophy, Lydia Tucke Jan 2022

The Pathology And Etiology Of Philosophy, Lydia Tucke

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

While much time is spent theorizing about philosophical concepts and theories, little thought has been given to the philosophy and psychology of philosophy itself. I argue that philosophy (or the act of philosophizing) should be considered a form of anxiety. I will examine whether or not philosophy should be evaluated as a mental disorder as well. Finally, I will explore the ways in which one can cope with the anxiety seen in philosophizing.

A Comparative Study Of Online Art History Information Literacy Instruction: A Tale Of Two Platforms, Elsa Loftis

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

In a collaborative effort between three departments at Portland State University, investigators designed and created Information Literacy (IL) modules tailored to the needs of Art History students utilizing two delivery platforms. One platform employed adaptive software (in this study, the product is called Realizeit), and the other was a static environment called Pressbooks. Students were randomly divided into cohorts based on these delivery methods. The author compared results of pre and post information literacy assessments and completed an analysis of students’ preliminary bibliographies to measure the success of the IL instruction. But the core investigation was to determine whether the …

‘Doing’ Hypertension: Experiential Knowledge And Practice In The Self-Management Of ‘High Blood’ In The Philippines, Gideon Lasco, Alicia Renedo, Jhaki A. Mendoza, Maureen L. Seguin, Benjamin Palafox, Lia M. Palileo-Villanueva, Dina Balabanova, Martin Mckee Jan 2022

Palileo-Villanueva, Dina Balabanova, Martin Mckee

Development Studies Faculty Publications

Patients’ embodied experiences do not always correspond to the biomedical concepts of particular diseases. Drawing from year-long fieldwork in the Philippines that involved semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and digital diaries, we examine how individuals ‘do’ hypertension through their embodied experiences and the knowledge and practice that emerge from them. Drawing inspiration from Annemarie Mol’s work on the notion of ‘multiplicity’ of disease, our analysis was informed by a commitment to privileging patients’ embodied experiences and the multiple ontologies of hypertension. We find that for patients diagnosed with hypertension in the Philippines, symptoms enact illness; patients rely on their …

‘Loob’ And ‘Labas’: Spatial Constructions Of Safety And Risk Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic In The Philippines, Gideon Lasco, Michael L. Tan, Vincen Gregory Yu Jan 2022

‘Loob’ And ‘Labas’: Spatial Constructions Of Safety And Risk Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic In The Philippines, Gideon Lasco, Michael L. Tan, Vincen Gregory Yu

Development Studies Faculty Publications

This article argues that local constructions of risky and safe spaces, as articulated by the notions ‘loob’ (inside) and ‘labas’ (outside), informed popular and political responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, leading to an overemphasis on staying at home and, conversely, a general avoidance or fear of outdoor spaces that was at times reinforced by public health authorities. Practices and policies related to the pandemic response rendered this binary opposition between ‘loob’ and ‘labas’ visible, from regulations concerning the use of personal protective equipment to restrictions of access to outdoor spaces. While this emergent …

Ateneo School of Government Publications

Endemicity is not only a biological and health event but has several inter-dependencies cross-cutting with the management of the economy, including governance and policies. Within the context of the discourse on inequity, what does endemicity mean for poor and low-income families, where policies on social inclusion and social welfare need to be re-calibrated?

Barangay Assembly: A Citizen-Led Reinvigoration Of Political Discourse And Civic Engagement In The Philippines, Michael Henry Yusingco Jan 2022

Barangay Assembly: A Citizen-Led Reinvigoration Of Political Discourse And Civic Engagement In The Philippines, Michael Henry Yusingco

Ateneo School of Government Publications

The Filipino indigenous custom of collective action known as bayanihan is institutionalized in the Barangay Assembly; a community forum where citizens can directly influence local governance. However; it is not widely utilized because many barangay officials are co-opted by local political dynasties. Results of the 2019 elections reveal that political dynasties continue to dominate the electoral process; making genuine political competition virtually impossible. This piece will present the strategy of using the Barangay Assembly as a citizen-led reinvigoration of political discourse and civic engagement. It will expound on the inherent value of the Barangay Assembly as a venue for purposeful …

Self-Efficacy And Job Satisfaction As Predictors Of Burnout Among School Psychologists In The Midwest United States, Elizabeth Mcknight-Romney

Dissertations

Problem

The concept of burnout is expressed as a syndrome evidenced by chronic exhaustion, depersonalization, and a lack of personal accomplishment. Burnout or work burnout syndrome is conceptualized as a prolonged process of emotional fatigue, involving loss of motivation and expectations, generating a feeling of failure affecting personal, work, and social levels (Maslach et al., 2001). Victims of burnout usually become exhausted, cynical about work-related matters, and question their capacity or ability to perform. Job burnout includes feeling exhausted physically, emotionally, and or mentally in the context of work (Maslach & Jackson, 1981). The demanding profession of school psychology has …
