In recent years, archival institutions have begun to digitally archive or preserve the items in their collections. This way, items are more accessible to those wanting to perform research but not necessarily handle the original documents and are not likely to be permanently damaged. One example of a digital preservation project is the one that forms the basis for this paper- the Oklahoma Historical Society's collection of out-of-print historical books that have been made available as e-books. Created over three years ago, this collection contains 22 books about Oklahoma and Texas history. The original publication dates of the books cover …

This study aims to analyze, from social-economics and environmental perspectives, how illegal gold mining survives and grows with its illegal status. Generally, illegal mining has a positive impact on the socio-economy of all parties involved. However, mining activities cause environmental damage and pollution so that the local community is vulnerable to disaster and potential conflict. This research was conducted at an illegal mining site in Aceh, the western province of Indonesia. To describe the primary data, it employs a descriptive qualitative method. The purposive sampling method is used to select key informants. The results show an increasing income of all …

The East Bluff Community Center (EBCC)’s mission is to “foster community engagement and neighborhood stabilization by providing a vibrant place to gather.” This paper seeks to shed light on the role that community centers play in creating socioeconomic opportunities for at-risk youth in low-income, American communities. The author completed an 11-month internship through Illinois State University’s Stevenson Center in which I was placed as a Community Engagement Coordinator at the EBCC. While at EBCC, I conducted a neighborhood needs assessment, strengthened existing and built new interorganizational partnerships, and launched a building revitalization within the context of the Integrated Prevention and …
Mitigate Negative Effects In Spillover Crises, Jun Zhang
Mitigate Negative Effects In Spillover Crises, Jun Zhang
Dissertations - ALL
When two brands are perceived as closely associated with each other due to industry membership, negative perceptions of and emotions towards the brand in crisis may transfer to another brand, known as negative spillover effects. Negative spillover effects of one brand's crisis can often lead to undeserved losses in financial returns and reputation for the entire industry or rival brands within the same industry. Spillover crises have been empirically documented among various inter-organizational relationships. However, despite the importance of understanding when a spillover crisis occurs and how to manage it, research in crisis communications has paid relatively little attention to …

Social media are a persuasive and influential part of a college student's daily life, especially when it comes to creating and sustaining relationships with others. The purpose of this dissertation was to understand how college students may use social media to interpret a person's willingness …

What explains variation in legislative effectiveness where party systems are fragmented and not policy-oriented? Why and how are some legislators in these contexts able to move their proposals through the legislative process and into law, while others fail to do so?
Recent literature on legislative effectiveness in the United States highlights several determinants behind lawmakers' ability to advance their policies through the legislative process and into law. These include legislative experience, majority party status, institutional leadership positions, social connectedness, and membership to party factions. However, little is known about what shapes the behavior of lawmakers in institutional settings outside of …
Observations Of Post-Wildfire Landcover Trends In Boreal Alaska Using A Suite Of Remote Sensing Approaches, Eric John Deutsch
Observations Of Post-Wildfire Landcover Trends In Boreal Alaska Using A Suite Of Remote Sensing Approaches, Eric John Deutsch
Theses - ALL
Wildfires are a common occurrence in the boreal ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest. Studies suggest that anthropogenic climate change has fostered more frequent and higher severity fires in recent decades in these forests, which may result in substantial changes in vegetation structure and ecosystem functioning. However, large-scale studies examining the linkages between changing boreal wildfire regimes and vegetation structure have historically been limited in spatial scope due to the broad area and inaccessibility of many boreal regions, including the Alaskan interior. The development and advancement of satellite remote sensing instruments and geospatial analysis techniques provide researchers with unmatched abilities to …
