Predicting Altruism With Personality “Beyond” The Big Five, Sereena Dargan
Predicting Altruism With Personality “Beyond” The Big Five, Sereena Dargan
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Research investigating individual differences in personality and altruistic behaviour has focused predominantly on traits described within the Five-Factor Model (FFM). The objective of the present study was to explore the role of age, gender, and 10 personality traits outside of the common FFM in predicting altruism. An online survey including the Supplementary Personality Inventory (Paunonen, 2002), the Self-Report Altruism Scale (Rushton et al., 1981), and the Compassionate Altruism Scale (O’Connor et al., 2015) was completed by 256 participants. Regression analysis revealed the SPI to account for significant variance in both measures of altruism. Specifically, age, integrity, and risk-taking positively predicted …
Apiculture Adaptations In A Shifting World: The Beekeeper’S Experience Across The Globe, Katherine Lloyd
Apiculture Adaptations In A Shifting World: The Beekeeper’S Experience Across The Globe, Katherine Lloyd
Capstone Collection
Existing research suggests that changes in climate, such as rainfall and temperature shifts, will threaten bees’ main food sources and cause detrimental impacts on apiculture globally. Despite this, to the best of the author’s knowledge, there is little available by way of research relating to how beekeepers themselves experience these increased pressures to their practices. This research project investigated the experiences of beekeepers in the United States, Malawi, and Cameroon. Surveys of US beekeepers, and interviews with Malawian and Cameroonian beekeepers were coded for emergent themes and surveys were analyzed via descriptive statistics. Major differences in challenges reported by beekeepers …

Assessing Metacognition In Rats, Abagail Hennessy
Assessing Metacognition In Rats, Abagail Hennessy
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Metacognition in humans refers to the ability to reflect upon one’s own state of knowledge, and to be able to make inferences based on that knowledge. Evidence of metacognition has been most often found in nonhuman primates. However, there may be evidence suggesting metacognitive skills in nonprimate animals as well, such as rats. The present study investigated whether Long Evans rats will utilize information they have about two 8 arm radial mazes to efficiently locate a food reward.

The City of Philadelphia is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its ambitious 25-year Green City, Clean Waters plan. It was the first endeavor of its kind, as the City proposed a primarily nature-based approach to meet regulatory requirements associated with decreasing the amount of polluted water entering creeks and rivers in Philadelphia. The forward-looking Green City, Clean Waters reimagined stormwater management as a visible investment in public areas such as sidewalks, parkland, and vacant lots, as well as other spaces in neighborhoods across the City.

The Athletic Body: Eating Disorders In Canadian Sport History, Kimberly Callander
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Eating disorders in Canadian sport are and have been an ongoing issue for some time. In recent years, more research and education programs directed at athletes and their peers have been implemented. However, the topic has never been subjected to thorough historical analysis, specifically in Canadian history. The purpose of this research was to gain a complete understanding of sport-related eating disorder development in Canada.
To construct a social history analysis of eating disorders in Canadian sport, the exploration of Canadian policy statements, archived media sources, general history of eating disorders, and autobiographical accounts by Canadian athletes was conducted. The …
Modeling Weather Vulnerability Dynamically: Applications Of Multiple Linear Regression To Weather Index Microinsurance, Sophie Wu
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
This paper offers a broad overview of the philanthropic goals of microinsurance — namely, to provide vulnerable populations with more self-sufficient and sustainable methods of coping with risk — and through this lens, analyses the applications of multiple linear regression in developing dynamic models for microinsurance. We explain the foundations of MLR (multiple linear regression), and then give two examples for how a simple multiple linear regression model can be adapted with a novel outcome variable (famine) and dependent variables (climate change related costs). Overall, a better understanding of MLR can lend to a better understanding of how microinsurance can …
Measuring Palatability As A Linear Combination Of Nutrient Levels In Food Items, Jeffrey S. Young
Measuring Palatability As A Linear Combination Of Nutrient Levels In Food Items, Jeffrey S. Young
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
It well known that palatability and nutritional quality of foods and/or diets are viewed as being in tension with one another. While there exist multiple measures of healthiness, there are no such measures for tastiness. This gap limits the degree to which researchers can investigate this tension and its implications for dietary behavior and hence public health and nutrition policy. The scope of future work concerning the dietary behavior of Americans would expand greatly if researchers better understood consumers’ willingness to eat certain foods, which matters as much as recommending those foods for them to eat in the first place. …

Rejection Sensitivity, Relationship Quality, And Adjustment In Late-Adolescent Romantic Relationships And Friendships, Laura A. Foster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rejection sensitive (RS) individuals are at greater risk for emotional maladjustment across the lifespan, with consistent links identified with depression and social anxiety. Yet little is known about interpersonal factors that may affect this association for late adolescents, especially with their romantic partners and close friends. The present study examined relationship qualities of support and negative interactions with romantic partners and friends as moderators of the link between RS and internalizing symptoms. Given the differences between male and female social relationships and experiences, these associations were expected to be further moderated by gender, with RS females in poorer quality relationships …

Agent-Based Activity Generation Of Runners For City Infrastructure Planning, Quang Le
REU Final Reports
Since the pandemic started, many gyms and indoor classes have been shut down to mitigate the spread of Coronavirus. Many people have been forced to get onto pavement streets to get some fresh air while running around and coping with the new reality. There are over 60 million runners in the U.S., and that number is growing rapidly during this time without any sign of stopping once life gets back to normal. In this project, an agent-based model has been developed to generate a set of routes that runners would take in their daily run in a neighborhood of Portland …

Letting Accuracy 'Sync' In: The Role Of Synchrony In Perceptions Of Personality Traits And Affective States, Morgan D. Stosic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The human propensity to synchronize their behaviors to one another seems to be an ever-present aspect of our social lives. While a breadth of approaches have been taken to explain this phenomenon, the benefit of individuals temporally aligning their behaviors to one another during an interaction remains to be precisely identified. Some have argued that by becoming synchronized to the movements and actions of another, one may become a better perceiver of that other’s internal attributes (Hoehl et al., 2021). The purpose of the present thesis was to explore this potential benefit of synchrony by examining its relation to one’s …

Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine
Many older adults have unmet needs and social challenges that can negatively impact their health and well-being, particularly during and after the COVID pandemic. These include social isolation, inadequate care or assistance with their daily activities, food insecurity, housing insecurity, poverty, and abuse/neglect/exploitation. An ED visit provides a unique and critical opportunity to identify these issues and initiate intervention for these vulnerable older adults. By assessing for unmet needs and social challenges, considering a team-based approach as to how they may be ameliorated, using online tools, and integrating telehealth and EMS, ED providers have the potential to dramatically improve …

Using Mobile Device Data To Track The Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Spatiotemporal Patterns Of National Park Visitation, John A. Kupfer, Zhenlong Li, Huan Ning, Xiao Huang
Faculty Publications
Effective quantification of visitation is important for understanding many impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on national parks and other protected areas. In this study, we mapped and analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns of visitation for six national parks in the western U.S., taking advantage of large mobility records sampled from mobile devices and released by SafeGraph as part of their Social Distancing Metric dataset. Based on comparisons with visitation statistics released by the U.S. National Park Service, our results confirmed that mobility records from digital devices can effectively capture park visitation patterns but with much finer spatiotemporal granularity. In general, triggers …

Stigma Towards Treatment Amongst People With Mental Illness, Haya M. Khan
Stigma Towards Treatment Amongst People With Mental Illness, Haya M. Khan
Student Theses
There is evidence for the persistence of stigma towards people diagnosed with mental illness, as well as that endorsement of stigma is associated with reluctance to seek treatment. However, the process by which self-stigma impacts treatment choice amongst people with mental illness is not well understood. This study examined the impact of self-stigma on one’s decision to take medication or undergo psychotherapy; as well as the impact of stigma on choice of individual or group therapy. Surveys were administered through CloudResearch to 128 participants from the U.S, who reported a disorder diagnosed by a professional. The SSMIS-SF and ISMI-9 estimated …

To Know The Land With Hands And Minds: Negotiating Agricultural Knowledge In Late-Nineteenth-Century New England And Westphalia, Justus Hillebrand
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ever since the eighteenth century, experts have tried to tell farmers how to farm. The agricultural enlightenment in Europe marked the beginning of a long arc of new experts aiming to change agricultural knowledge and practice. This dissertation analyzes the pivotal period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in Germany and the United States when scientists, improvers, and market agents began to develop comprehensive ways to communicate agricultural innovation to farmers. In a functional approach to analyzing the negotiation of agricultural knowledge through its communication in things, words, and practices, this dissertation argues that the process of change …
The Effects Of Recent Minimum Wage Increases On Self-Reported Health In The United States, Liam Sigaud
The Effects Of Recent Minimum Wage Increases On Self-Reported Health In The United States, Liam Sigaud
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A sharp income-health gradient exists in the United States. Lower levels of income are associated with higher rates of mortality, morbidity, and risky health behaviors, as well as decreased access to health care. Growing evidence of a causal link between income and health suggests that government income-support policies may be an effective strategy for improving health outcomes among poor Americans. One such policy – the minimum wage – has experienced a surge in popularity in recent years. In 2019, twenty-five states and the District of Columbia increased their minimum wage, up from only eight states in 2011. Yet the literature …

Acehnese Attitudes Towards Their Heritage Language: A Qualitative, Inter-Generational Study, Zulfadli Abdul Aziz, Yunisrina Qismullah Yusuf Dr., Naula Aulia
The Qualitative Report
Due to the dominant position of Indonesian as the national and official language, local languages have been less favoured amongst their native speakers. Even one of the most widely used languages in Aceh Province, Acehnese seems to be neglected by younger generations, especially in urban areas. This study investigates the practice, attitudes, and maintenance of the Acehnese language. Three generations of Acehnese women were interviewed in-depth on their language use. Most respondents, in this study, still use Acehnese in their daily communication. All respondents in the first generation and most in the second generation obtain a positive attitude towards Acehnese …

Discards & Diverse Economies: Reuse In Rural Maine, Brieanne Berry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents an ethnographic exploration of diverse reuse economies in rural Maine in an effort to illuminate both how used goods move between people and organizations, as well as the value of that movement for people and communities. In response to a growing number of calls for research into the social dimensions of circular economies, this research explores the varied and uneven impacts of materials reuse as they are experienced by local participants. This work uses a qualitative approach, drawing on two main methods: participant observation in reuse establishments and in-depth, semi-structured interviews with reuse participants. This rich qualitative …
