The Right Premtm: Rasch Analysis Of A New Patient Reported Experience Measure For Use By Older People In Hospital, Louise Heuzenroeder, Jyoti Khadka, Alison Kitson

Patient Experience Journal

Healthcare rights exist to protect older people from harm and to empower older people to participate in their care with independence, choice and control. Multiple investigations revealing abuse provide evidence that older people’s rights are being breached. Older people must have the opportunity to report on their experience of care against their rights. The Right PREMTM is a new instrument designed to measure older people’s experience of care against their healthcare rights. The objective of this cross-sectional validation study was to assess the psychometric properties of a new instrument to measure the experience of care consistent with the healthcare …

Traversing Barriers To Health Care Among Lgbtq+ Latinx Emerging Adults: Utilizing Patient Experiences To Model Access, Rachel M. Schmitz, Jennifer Tabler

Patient Experience Journal

Enduring multiple sources of marginalization, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ+) youth of color living at the United States-Mexico border navigate stigma and health challenges surrounding their LGBTQ+ and ethnic identities. This study sought to delineate barriers to health care experienced by marginalized young adult patients.

We qualitatively examined the patient experiences of 41 LGBTQ+ Latinx young adults (ages 18-24) in the Rio Grande Valley between 2016 and 2017. Often tied to their experiences of emerging adulthood, most respondents emphasized how financial barriers, including cost of services and disruptions to insurance status, prevented them from seeking care (barriers to …

Breaking Barriers To Equity: A Conversation With Dr. Julia Iyasere, Jason A. Wolf Phd Aug 2021

Breaking Barriers To Equity: A Conversation With Dr. Julia Iyasere, Jason A. Wolf Phd

Patient Experience Journal

I was honored to have the opportunity to talk to someone I've been fortunate to meet in the past few months and who has taught me incredible things about the topic of equity in healthcare and even more so the idea of health justice, Dr. Julia Iyasere, Executive Director of the NewYork-Presbyterian Dalio Center for Health Justice. As a physician, an educator, a researcher, and I suggest an evidence-based social activist, Dr. Iyasere has led the establishment and growth of the Dalio Center in just the over 9 months since its launch. But the ideas she champions in her work …

His Story: “I Would Be Better Off Dead”, Ronald Wyatt Md

Patient Experience Journal

A physician shares the story of his brother’s experience in an ICU, how the hospital caring for him failed him as a human being, and how the pain of not being properly cared for and not being treated with dignity and respect left the patient feeling he would be better off dead. In the back of his mind the patient wondered if it was because he is Black. The story prompts the author to reflect on patient rights as a reminder that healthcare is called to serve, to love, to be empathetic, to be respectful, to be humble, to listen, …

Moving From Talk To Action: A Commitment To Ensuring Equity Must Ground Our Efforts To Transform The Human Experience, Jason A. Wolf Phd

Patient Experience Journal

When we first introduced the call for submissions for this special issue last August, we were still churning in the first wave of the COVID pandemic. Just three to four months from the start of an unending rash of unexpected and harsh realities that we were faced with in healthcare and in society at large, we too found that the moment was revealing all the weaknesses and wounds that had existed in the foundations of the healthcare system from well before the pandemic hit. Our own research at The Beryl Institute in 2020 reinforced a quiet reality: that people do …

Relationship Between Beliefs About The Functions Of Dreams And Dream Attitudes: An Exploratory Study In Saudi Arabian Cultural Milieu, Sanaa Al-Quaiti

Effat Undergraduate Research Journal

Research on beliefs and attitudes towards dreams has been conducted across the world among different populations ; however, a very limited number of these researches involve Arab samples. The purpose of this research is to explore the relationship between the beliefs about the function of dreams and the attitudes towards dreams. The sample is comprised of 200 adult participants of both genders from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The participants were asked to respond to a survey comprising of the items of two different scales: Revised Dream Attitudes and Olsen’s list of Beliefs about the Function of Dreams, electronically via social media …

Effects Of Cck Or Tck On Developing Children’S Language Acquisition And Personal Experience, Rawan Abudawood, Rawan Balahmar Aug 2021

Effects Of Cck Or Tck On Developing Children’S Language Acquisition And Personal Experience, Rawan Abudawood, Rawan Balahmar

Effat Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper focuses on the way in which children’s language and personal experience develop when they are identified as Cross-Cultural Kids (CCKs) or Third Culture Kids (TCKs). Globalization played a role in increasing the number of CCKs and TCKs. As a result, many research papers have discussed this issue. However, most research papers were discussing the issue negatively, focusing on lack of patriotism, and stability, while ignoring the privileges these children have, such as developing their personality and language acquisition. The paper has a mixed method of research as the data was collected through face interviews and a survey on …

Stress And Coping Strategies Among Saudi Working Women, Enas Alghamdi Aug 2021

Stress And Coping Strategies Among Saudi Working Women, Enas Alghamdi

Effat Undergraduate Research Journal

Coping strategies sufficiently impact the psychological well-being. Stress may cause depression in many cases. The presence of depression negatively affects physical and cognitive well-being, as participants who demonstrated higher levels of depression were found to be more likely to show physical decline. Women around the world and especially in Saudi Arabia are asked to face challenges to cope with their daily stress of professional life. Much research has been done on the relationship between coping strategies, personality traits, and work stress. But not much research has been done to investigate the relationship between work stress in women and their coping …

The Desire Of Dependence On Men And The Justification Of Sexism: An Exploratory Study Of Saudi Females, Amal Althobaiti

Effat Undergraduate Research Journal

This research explores the prevalence of the desire of dependence on men among Saudi women in Jeddah and its relationship to the justification of sexism. A number of Saudi women living in Jeddah (N=179) responded to the Desire of Dependence on Men Scale, which was developed for this study. To measure the degree of justification of sexism, the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (Glick & Fiske, 1996) was also distributed to respondents online. Showing a desire of dependency on men among Saudi women was expected, in addition to finding a significant relationship between the two suggested variables. In this study, respondents showed …

Perfect Love Casts Out Fear: Exploring The Effectiveness Of A Person-Centered Disability Awareness Seminar In A Congregational Setting, Joshua H. Jones Aug 2021

Perfect Love Casts Out Fear: Exploring The Effectiveness Of A Person-Centered Disability Awareness Seminar In A Congregational Setting, Joshua H. Jones

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

People with disabilities and their families frequently experience barriers toward inclusion and belonging in multiple spheres of life. These barriers are also present in Christian congregations. However, many congregations express a godly desire to love people with disabilities and their families without these obstacles.

The Old and New Testaments provide examples of how God’s people sought to love people with disabilities in their midst creatively and intentionally in response to God’s gracious actions, invitation, and command. Recent research in disability studies routinely highlight the necessity of being attentive to the uniqueness of each person with disabilities and his or her …

Parental Rejection And Peer Acceptance: The Mediating Role Of Cognitive Bias, Jessica Hodges, Bailey Dodd, Jana Hackathorn Aug 2021

Parental Rejection And Peer Acceptance: The Mediating Role Of Cognitive Bias, Jessica Hodges, Bailey Dodd, Jana Hackathorn

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Understanding what influences peer attachments is vitally important. Consistent with organizational/transactional theory, we examined the roles of emotional dysregulation and cognitive bias, in the relationship between parental rejection and peer acceptance. Early adult participants reported their perception of parental acceptance/rejection in childhood and current levels of emotional, cognitive, and social wellbeing. Results replicate findings that the quality of a parent-child relationship relates to psychological functioning, including one’s ability to regulate emotions, understand others’ emotions and intentions, and form quality relationships. However, maladaptive cognitions mediate the relationship between parental and peer acceptance.

Construct Validity Of The General Outcomes Of Bystander Action Scale: When Bystander Consequences Predict Future Bystander Behavior, Alison Krauss Aug 2021

Construct Validity Of The General Outcomes Of Bystander Action Scale: When Bystander Consequences Predict Future Bystander Behavior, Alison Krauss

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

Sexual and physical relationship violence are prevalent public health concerns on college campuses. Bystander training programs have recently been introduced as a means to prevent or intervene upon such violence, and generally lead to increases in prosocial bystander behavior. However, little is known about the consequences of engaging in prosocial bystander behavior. The General Outcomes of Bystander Action Scale (GOBAS) has been proposed to examine such consequences, and preliminary evidence points to some validity of this scale. The current research aims to add upon this research by replicating the factor structure of the GOBAS and providing evidence of criterion validity. …

Essays In Urban Economics, Benjamin Stutts Aug 2021

Essays In Urban Economics, Benjamin Stutts

Economics Theses and Dissertations

Chapter 1 examines how land use regulation affects residential segregation by income. Residential segregation by income severely limits access to opportunity for low-income households, restricting prospects of upward mobility. Land use regulations are one potential determinant of such segregation. However, establishing a causal link between such regulation and segregation faces two econometric challenges. First, regulation is potentially endogenous. Second, proper measurement of segregation is difficult. Concerning the first challenge, the prior literature relies on instrumental variables that may not be valid. Concerning the second challenge, the prior literature relies on measures that ignore the spatial dimension of segregation. This paper …

The Zooarchaeological Dimension Of Preceramic Human-Environment Dynamics In The Highlands Of Southwestern Honduras, Alejandro J. Figueroa Aug 2021

The Zooarchaeological Dimension Of Preceramic Human-Environment Dynamics In The Highlands Of Southwestern Honduras, Alejandro J. Figueroa

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation I evaluate different hypotheses regarding human-environment dynamics in the Mesoamerican neotropics during the Preceramic period (ca. 11000-7400 cal B.P.) by examining the largest extant faunal assemblage dated to this time. The Preceramic was characterized by major climatic and ecological changes following the end of the Pleistocene, including the extinction of megafauna and the expansion of tropical forests. This period ended with a series of behavioral adaptations suited to this transformed landscape such as increased territoriality, sedentism, agriculture, and domestication. Three hypotheses have been proposed to explain these dynamics: the Broad-Spectrum Revolution hypothesis suggests post-Pleistocene resource uncertainty and …

Under Pressure: Examining Adolescent Resistance To Antisocial Peer Pressure Using Virtual Reality, Kelli Sargent Aug 2021

Under Pressure: Examining Adolescent Resistance To Antisocial Peer Pressure Using Virtual Reality, Kelli Sargent

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

How adolescents resist antisocial peer pressure is an important determinant of problem behaviors, yet little is known about how resistance elements—what teens say (tactics) and how they say it (assertiveness)—operate together and relate jointly to problem behaviors. Objective: We examined how assertiveness and tactics relate to problem behaviors in different situations by extending previous research using an innovative virtual reality (VR) paradigm. We hypothesized 1) modest associations between assertiveness and tactics, 2) modest associations between tactics and problem behaviors, and that 3) assertiveness and tactics would independently contribute to problem behaviors after accounting for one another. Method: Late adolescents (n …

Spatial Disparities Of Covid-19 Cases And Fatalities In United States Counties, Sarah L. Jackson, Sahar Derakhshan, Leah Blackwood, Logan Lee, Qian Huang, Margot Habets, Susan L. Cutter

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the spatial and temporal trends in county-level COVID-19 cases and fatalities in the United States during the first year of the pandemic (January 2020–January 2021). Statistical and geospatial analyses highlight greater impacts in the Great Plains, Southwestern and Southern regions based on cases and fatalities per 100,000 population. Significant case and fatality spatial clusters were most prevalent between November 2020 and January 2021. Distinct urban–rural differences in COVID-19 experiences uncovered higher rural cases and fatalities per 100,000 population and fewer government mitigation actions enacted in rural counties. High levels of social vulnerability and the absence of mitigation …

Workload, Megan Paul Aug 2021

Workload, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is workload?

There is no one, universally accepted definition of workload. A broad definition is that it is “an all-encompassing term that includes any variable reflecting the amount or difficulty of one’s work” (Bowling & Kirkendall, 2012, p. 222). Quantitative workload is the label for the amount of work done, and qualitative workload is the label for the difficulty of work (Bowling & Kirkendall, 2012). Further, there is a distinction between mental and physical workload and between objective and perceived workload (Bowling & Kirkendall, 2012). A variety of approaches have been used to measure objective workload. A common one …

Weight Status Perceptions And Food Choice, Christopher R. Gustafson Aug 2021

Weight Status Perceptions And Food Choice, Christopher R. Gustafson

Cornhusker Economics

Does your weight status—whether your height and weight put you into the normal weight, overweight, or obese category—predict your food choices, or even the types of food you’ll pay attention to when making a choice? What about the weight status you perceive yourself to be? These are important questions because the percentage of the population that is overweight or obese in the U.S.—and world-
wide—has been increasing for decades despite a wide range of efforts aimed at slowing/reversing its growth. In the U.S., over 70 percent of the population is overweight or obese. High body weight has numerous consequences for …

Revamping The Scholarly Publishing Landscape: A Case For Open Access, Dimple Patel Dr., Sneha Tripathi Dr. Aug 2021

Revamping The Scholarly Publishing Landscape: A Case For Open Access, Dimple Patel Dr., Sneha Tripathi Dr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The for-profit publishing industry has taken over the reins of the scholarly publishing landscape which was primarily meant for the academicians and by the academicians. The developments in information communication and technology facilitated open publishing, open sharing and open access, the researchers, however, still prefer for closed access journals, which survive mostly on the metrics developed and promoted by the for-profit publishing industry for their reputation. Also, in the contemporary academe, the merit of the researchers is determined largely by the number of their publications and by the fact that these are published by the purportedly reputed publishers who predominantly …

Espoused Versus Operationalized Organizational Values: A Case Study Of Values Integration, Erik Dees Aug 2021

Espoused Versus Operationalized Organizational Values: A Case Study Of Values Integration, Erik Dees

Dissertations

At the start of the 21st century, corporate America found itself confronted by a series of scandals about powerful business leaders unethically exploiting the system and their own organizations. Among the most familiar of these scandals is the one involving the former energy and commodities services corporation, Enron. Illegal accounting practices in that organization resulted both in the dissolution of that organization and in passage of the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which placed greater demands on corporate accounting practices.

Enron’s maleficence deeply affected its more than 20,000 employees through job loss and the evaporation of retirement benefits. Enron leaders’ widely …
