Human-Bear Conflict And Community Perceptions Of Risk In The Zanskar Region, Northern India, Kirti Chavan, Sophie M. Watts, Tsewang Namgail

Human–Wildlife Interactions

The Himalayan brown bear (Ursus arctos isabellinus) is an endangered subspecies of brown bear (U. a. spp.) and is found throughout the Himalayan region of south and central Asia. We describe the type of and the current level of human–bear conflict (HBC) with Himalayan brown bears in the Zanskar region of northern India and suggest potential mitigation methods. Between July and September 2018, we interviewed 218 households across the Zanskar region, all of whom had experienced HBC. Participants reported increasing numbers of HBC events in the last 4 years. The most common form of HBC was damage …

"Like I Was An Actual Researcher": Participation And Identity Trajectories Of Underrepresented Minority And First-Generation Stem Students In Research Training Communities Of Practice, Jennifer Lynn Lindwall Aug 2021

"Like I Was An Actual Researcher": Participation And Identity Trajectories Of Underrepresented Minority And First-Generation Stem Students In Research Training Communities Of Practice, Jennifer Lynn Lindwall

Dissertations and Theses

Although calls for a more diverse workforce in biomedical fields have been widespread, racial and ethnic gaps in biomedical degree attainment remain. Contextualist perspectives seek to understand persistent STEM inequities by examining person-in-context experiences and how systemic factors filter into students' proximal contexts shaping their participation and science identity trajectories. Research training communities of practice aim to offer underrepresented minority and first-generation students support, guidance, and opportunities to learn the practices of science and construct their science identity. However, many students still choose to leave these programs. There is limited research on these students' science identity construction process and their …

Interactional Synchrony In Romantic Couples: Linking Dynamic Systems Of Nonverbal Behavior With Outcome Data, Darren J. Garcia Aug 2021

Interactional Synchrony In Romantic Couples: Linking Dynamic Systems Of Nonverbal Behavior With Outcome Data, Darren J. Garcia

Doctoral Dissertations

Abstract

The aim of this study was to bridge the growing body of research on interactional synchrony with variables reflecting relationship quality in romantic couples. Video data from 116 romantic couples who participated in a short-term relationship intervention (Gordon et al., 2019) and their self-report assessments of relationship satisfaction, emotional intimacy, and constructive communication patterns were used for analyses. Movement was objectively quantified for each partner using Motion Energy Analysis (MEA; Ramseyer & Tschacher, 2011), an automated frame-differencing method. Cross-lag correlations of the time-series data were then aggregated and operationalized as interactional synchrony. Empirical relationships between interactional synchrony and relationship …

Landslide Mapping And Susceptibility Assessment Of Chittagong Hilly Areas, Bangladesh, Yasin Wahid Rabby Aug 2021

Landslide Mapping And Susceptibility Assessment Of Chittagong Hilly Areas, Bangladesh, Yasin Wahid Rabby

Doctoral Dissertations

Landslides are natural phenomena in mountainous areas that cause damage to properties and death to people around the world. In Bangladesh, landslides have caused enormous economic loss and casualty in Chittagong Hilly Areas (CHA). In this dissertation, a landslide inventory of CHA was prepared using Google Earth and field mapping. Google Earth-based mapping helped in recording landslides in inaccessible areas like forests. In contrast, field mapping helped in mapping landslides in accessible areas like areas near road networks. For absence data sampling of landslide susceptibility mapping, this research proposed the Mahalanobis distance (MD) based absence data sampling and compared it …

The Development Of Teacher Identity In Counselor Education Doctoral Students, Wesley Allen Aug 2021

The Development Of Teacher Identity In Counselor Education Doctoral Students, Wesley Allen

Doctoral Dissertations

Moving forward, the field of counseling needs to continue to be concerned about strengthening its identity (Kaplan et al., 2014). Part of this process concerns the training of competent and effective professional counselors. It is important that consideration be given to how the individuals preparing these counselors are trained. Counselor education doctoral students, as part of their training to become counselor educators, are prepared to work as counselors, scholars, leaders, supervisors, and teachers. While we have a firm understanding of how these students develop in general (Limberg et al., 2014; Moss et al., 2014), there is little known about how …

Addressing The Inconsistencies In Counselor Skill Development And Measurement Through Deliberate Practice And Assessment Tools, Zach Budesa Aug 2021

Addressing The Inconsistencies In Counselor Skill Development And Measurement Through Deliberate Practice And Assessment Tools, Zach Budesa

Doctoral Dissertations

Counselor educators and supervisors have an ethical duty to monitor client welfare and student counselor development, but the tools and processes programs put in place may miss the mark. This dissertation proposes deliberate practice and assessment improvement as avenues for counselor educators to leverage existing skills and resources for the benefit of clients and students. In the first manuscript, deliberate practice is proposed as a framework which can unify the various methods and teaching practices which have proliferated over the history of counselor education. This manuscript reviews the literate surrounding counselor skill development and deliberate practice and provides examples of …

Audiovisual Speech Processing: Implications For Speech Perception And Language Development, Ryan Andrew Cannistraci Aug 2021

Audiovisual Speech Processing: Implications For Speech Perception And Language Development, Ryan Andrew Cannistraci

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation aims to empirically assess the complex, multileveled relationships between audiovisual speech perception and early language development. The majority of extant language development research has justifiably focused on infants’ ability to learn language from auditory input, and indeed, infants are precocious auditory learners (Saffran & Kirkham, 2018). Complementary to auditory speech, however, are the necessarily redundant facial movements used to articulate speech. Outside of language development research, multimodal processing has been theorized to facilitate perceptual learning and cognitive development (Bahrick & Lickliter, 2000), but only a small number of empirical studies have investigated how audiovisual speech perception in infancy …

The Role Of Sustainability In Park And Recreation Administrators’ Policy Decisions, Stephen Smith Aug 2021

The Role Of Sustainability In Park And Recreation Administrators’ Policy Decisions, Stephen Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

This study assessed the extent to which economic, environmental, and social sustainability concerns factor into park and recreation administrators’ decisions regarding outdoor recreation and facilities. Links to an anonymous, online survey were emailed to state and local park and recreation administrators within the state of Tennessee. The study’s useable response rate was 22% (122/561).

An adjusted Value Belief Norm (VBN) theory was used as the framework, with variables including administrators’ values, beliefs, pro-environmental behavior implementation, perceived constraints, and demographics. Analysis consisted of mediated regression, multiple regression, path analysis, and a qualitative evaluation of submitted constraints. Results supported the general VBN …

360º Videos Of Natural Scenery Delivered Via Virtual Reality Devices And Its Effect On Mood, Joseph Strong Aug 2021

360º Videos Of Natural Scenery Delivered Via Virtual Reality Devices And Its Effect On Mood, Joseph Strong

Doctoral Dissertations

Nature has long been touted as a method to alleviate the symptoms of stressful modern life and introduce some aesthetic novelty. For those individuals for whom access to nature is in some way limited, especially older adults facing poor physical or mental health, novel approaches to bring the outside world in are necessary to help enhance quality of life. This pilot study endeavors to help improve the mood of a sample of 43 older adults by testing a new intervention – using smart phones to deliver 360-degree videos of nature. Results of the study provide evidence that the intervention may …

Theoretical contributions and practical implications for the career experiences of women …

Three Essays On The Economics Of Health And Higher Education In The United States, Hieu M. Nguyen Aug 2021

Three Essays On The Economics Of Health And Higher Education In The United States, Hieu M. Nguyen

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is a collection of three essays in applied microeconomics. In the first essay, I study the enrollment effects of Tennessee Promise, a state-funded financial aid program in the two-year college sector. I document a substantial response in full-time first-time enrollment and some degree of substitutability between the unsubsidized and subsidized college sectors following the inception of the Tennessee Promise program. The second essay takes initial steps to examine the broader implications of free college. I first use institution-level data to construct three metrics of diversity, namely the share of underrepresented minorities in the student body, Simpson’s index, and …

Are We Really Getting Into The Green Scene? Investigating The Effects Of Kyoto Protocol Mechanisms On The Environment And Economy, Erica Reanne C. Co, Samantha Colleen M. Francisco, Chelsie Marie D. Gumba, Joshua Martine J. Magallanes

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

The world has changed drastically in favor of the human race as the processes of production improve, leading to the stimulation of economic growth. However, we failed to consider how these changes affect the environment, causing pollution levels to rise due to it being an unavoidable by-product of production. Eventually, nations were driven to develop a strategy to combat climate change and increase greenhouse gas emissions in the form of the Kyoto Protocol. This research compares two of the Kyoto Protocol Mechanisms, specifically the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), to investigate the effect of such …

Catalytic Teaching And Ideologized Content, David Catterick Aug 2021

Catalytic Teaching And Ideologized Content, David Catterick

International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching

This article has as its starting point the growing acceptance over the past decade of intentional ideological influence in both English language teaching materials and approaches. It explores some current examples of ideologized content before examining catalytic teaching, the intentioned use of ideologized content by a Christian English language teacher (CELT). The article provides some examples of classroom content that may be considered catalytic and then suggests five guiding principles based in part on the findings of Johnston’s extensive study of the work of CELTs at a language school in Poland. It is hoped that these principles might be helpful …

Gift Of Language, William T. Haselton Aug 2021

Gift Of Language, William T. Haselton

International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching

What is the significance of language? As language teachers, we use it as a medium of communication and as the basis for every lesson we prepare. Could it be more than just a tool of communication or a target for students to strive for? Language actually serves as primary evidence of God’s creation of humankind in His image. Even secular thinkers marvel at the “language instinct” of human beings and regard it as the distinguishing mark of humanity, setting us apart from all other creatures. Considering the amazing wonder of language, any explanation of its origin requires a step of …

Litigating For Legality: Nature Conservation, Commercial Fisheries And Disputed Territoriality In Ukraine’S Danube Delta, Tanya Richardson Aug 2021

Litigating For Legality: Nature Conservation, Commercial Fisheries And Disputed Territoriality In Ukraine’S Danube Delta, Tanya Richardson

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Between 2014 and 2016 Ukraine’s Danube Biosphere Reserve (DBR) administrators devoted extensive time to lawsuits in which they defended the legality of commercial fisheries in reserve territory. Two cases are discussed in order to examine what impact litigation had and why administrators pursued litigation when dominant accounts of law in Ukraine suggest that avoiding the courts might be a more likely response. It analyzes court documents and interviews gathered during anthropological research about nature conservation in the Danube Delta by combining insights from political ecology, agrarian studies, and socio-legal scholarship on Ukraine. Even though administrators lost their cases and had …

Intended And Unintended Effects Of E-Cigarette Taxes On Youth Tobacco Use, Rahi Abouk, Charles J. Courtemanche, Dhaval Dave, Bo Feng, Abigail S. Friedman, Johanna Catherine Maclean, Michael F. Pesko, Joseph J. Sabia, Samuel Safford

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers

Over the past decade, rising youth use of e-cigarettes and other electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has prompted aggressive regulation by state and local governments. Between 2010 and 2019, ten states and two large counties adopted ENDS taxes. Applying a continuous treatment difference-in-differences approach to data from two large national datasets (Monitoring the Future and the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System), this study explores the impact of ENDS taxes on youth tobacco use. We find that ENDS taxes reduce youth e-cigarette consumption, with estimated e-cigarette tax elasticities of -0.06 to -0.21. However, we estimate sizable positive cigarette cross-tax elasticities, suggesting …

The Effects Of An Interdependent Group Contingency On Student Writing, Madeline B. Auge Aug 2021

The Effects Of An Interdependent Group Contingency On Student Writing, Madeline B. Auge

Doctoral Dissertations

National data indicate that many students in the United States are not proficient in writing at grade-level expectations (Persky et al., 2003). However, there is not enough research, resources, or support for school personnel to improve student writing (Graham & Harris, 2003). Previous writing intervention studies involving performance feedback methods have shown positive impacts on student writing fluency, but it may be too time consuming for teachers to use in the classroom (Truckenmiller et al., 2014). Teachers need feasible, evidence-based writing interventions that are easy to implement in their classrooms and that motivate students to improve their writing skills.

The …

Learning To Learn From Video? 30-Month-Olds Benefit From Continued Use Of Supportive Scaffolding, Gabrielle Strouse, Patricia Ganea Aug 2021

Learning To Learn From Video? 30-Month-Olds Benefit From Continued Use Of Supportive Scaffolding, Gabrielle Strouse, Patricia Ganea

School of Education Faculty Publications

Young children struggle to learn new words presented on video, but adult co-viewers can support them by providing scaffolds that explicitly connect the video and real world. In this study, we asked whether scaffolding facilitates children’s symbolic understanding of the video, such that they will subsequently transfer labels from video to real referents. Sixty-three 30-month-olds and 61 36-month-olds participated in a series of three word learning trials in one of three conditions. In the supportive condition, an in-person adult explicitly drew connections between each on-screen object and the corresponding real object in the room with the child. In the unsupportive …
