Trisutji Kamal's Music In Four Periods, Melani Budianta

International Review of Humanities Studies

This article maps the works of Indonesian female music composer and pianist, Trisutji Kamal, whose career spanned 7 decades. The composer who died in March 2021, was celebrated for the Islamic element of her works. Using the whole oeuvre of her music, personal interviews and historical research, this article argues that the religious element comprises only one period out of the four periods identified in her long career. The article contends that Kamal’s musical style was shaped by European music but tuned into Javanese nuances in its harmony, timbre and dynamic, creating a sense of embellished dissonance. We conclude that …

Globalisation And The Question Of Loyalty In Africa:A Philosophical Reflection, Femi R. Omotoyinbo

International Review of Humanities Studies

The focus of this study is on the influence of globalisation on the patriotic loyalty of Africans to Africa. Existing discourse is quite thin regarding the relationship between globalisation and loyalty in Africa. Yet, examining such relationship is important to understand the dearth of desirable development in many African states. Taking a philosophical approach, the contention in this study is that patriotic loyalty, which is significant for development in Africa, has been distorted by the influx of globalisation into Africa. The study historically highlights how globalisation influences diversion of loyalty from the immediate community to the global community. While the …

Buddhist Perspectives On Pluralism And Public Sphere, Jesada Buaban

International Review of Humanities Studies

This paper examines the concept of pluralism in Theravada tradition. Its main purpose is to discuss an idea proposed by Pinit Ratanakul, who tends to portray Buddhism as an inclusive religion, while this paper argues that such an inclusivism of Buddhism has limitations. In contrast, Buddhism also reflects some senses of exclusivism in order to confirm its truth claim. This aspect is always overlooked because scholars seem to interpret their religions to promote the trend of world peace but in a narrow way, until various parts of the scriptures have been ignored. Methodologically, textual analysis has been applied in this …

The importance of records cannot be overstated for a company or government body,as they can be compared to a critical organ or as the "heart" of the organization or institution, making decisions and as proof that perhaps a rules and regulation or program has been executed. Each agency's active records are, of course, created on a daily basis, when there's no records management, the amount of records will increase and turn into a jumble of paper. The National Archives of Indonesia or ANRI places a high value on record management. In order to establish wellmanaged and ordered documents that make …

This review of literature sought to compile a list, albeit not exhaustive, of short and long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and several types of play therapy used to effectively mitigate these effects. CSA has a long reaching impact affecting a child’s well-being, a nation’s societal health in addition to having a massive financial impact worldwide. Some children who are sexually abused do not struggle with negative effects and others are impacted for a lifetime. Some effects of CSA are developmental, cognitive, physical and psychological. These effects can impact the way a child views themselves, adults and the world. …

Cleavages And Electoral Support To Islamist Party In Javan Urban Areas: The Case Of Prosperous Justice Party, Andi Rahman Alamsyah

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Several studies have noted that electoral support for one of the Islamist parties in Indonesia, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), is mostly concentrated in urban areas. While I agree with this observation, I found that these studies did not pay adequate attention to the diversity of socio-political conditions in urban areas that contributed to the varying electoral support for PKS. One of these socio-political conditions is what Lipset and Rokkan (1967) conceptualized as cleavages (divisions of society). Based on the results of 2014 and 2019 local parliamentary elections in Javan urban areas, I argue that there are three cleavage patterns …

Previous studies on LPN Limau Manis only discussed its role in poverty alleviation and the management of its economic organization, but did not provide a comprehensive explanation of the transformation of LPN that combines traditional and modern concepts. This article argues that the institutional modernization of LPN Limau Manis that occurs remains attached to the customary values of the Nagari society. The qualitative method was used to collect data using a case study …

Tourism Gentrification In Bali, Indonesia: A Wake-Up Call For Overtourism, I Wayan Suyadnya

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Many tourists destinations experience revitalisation through funding from foreign capital that is brought by gentrification. As a result, tourist areas transform into regions that are friendly toward tourists and investment. Various studies see gentrification as an expression of consumer demand, individual preferences over the law of supply and demand. However, this article argues that tourism gentrification shows a different dynamic, namely driving the significance of tourism growth that supports overtourism. This article focuses on the reason why Balinese do not feel that the phenomenon of gentrification and the development of protests are a part of the symptom of overtourism. Research …

Communication And Learning: The Bilateral Information Transmission In The Cobweb Model, Eran Guse, M. C. Sunny Wong Jul 2021

Communication And Learning: The Bilateral Information Transmission In The Cobweb Model, Eran Guse, M. C. Sunny Wong

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Communication is a natural activity to gain information and exchange ideas for making proper economic decisions. The mechanism of social interaction remains inadequately understood. Previous studies have investigated the consequences of communication under a one-way information transmission mechanism from moreinformed leaders to less-informed followers. This mechanism leads to the ‘‘boomerang effect’’—a reduction in leaders’ forecasting efficiency due to the information transmission. However, communication should be interactive. This paper devises a two-stage interactive cobweb model with a generalized information diffusion process called the bi-directional information diffusion (BID) process, which allows both information transmission and feedback mechanisms. Numerical analysis and simulations show …

It is also informed by three empirical studies and the author’s reflections of his direct observations and experiences based on his work with development agencies. The MCEM uncovers important insights about the complex, dynamic, and reciprocal interactions among different groups of stakeholders at three different engagement levels (i.e., proximal, influential, and holistic). MCEM emphasizes a strong collaboration, effective coordination, and …

Moral Career Of Migrant Il/Legality: Undocumented Male Youths In New York City And Paris Negotiating Deportability And Regularizability, Stephen P. Ruszczyk

Department of Sociology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

As undocumented youths transition from arrival to adolescence to adulthood, regimes of migrant il/legality shape their lives in varying ways. Over the life course, undocumented youths' legal status may also shift, creating different “careers of il/legality,” sequences characterized by changes to legal status over time that re-shape self, mobility, and social roles. Longitudinal, comparative ethnographic data with undocumented male youths in Paris and New York and schools, municipal and civil society organizations show how shifts in legal status reshape youths' social identities based on access to institutional roles and evaluation of current and future conditions. Showing how undocumented youths simultaneously …

Our Diversity Is Our Strength: Explaining Variation In Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Emphasis In Municipal Arts And Cultural Plans, Carolyn G. Loh, Amanda Ashley, Leslie Durham, Karen Bubb

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Problem, Research Strategy and Findings: Municipal arts and cultural plans direct significant amounts of public investment and set far-reaching policies, as arts and culture investment becomes an increasingly widespread economic development strategy. While these plans frequently advertise the city’s diversity, they often lack specific strategies for supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition, the creation of these plans often does not involve urban planners, nor do the plans often connect to the city’s comprehensive plan or contain the types of fact bases and commitments to equity that comprehensive plans do. In this study of 64 US municipal arts and cultural …

Pittsburgh V. Cleveland: Winning In Football (Finally), Losing In Economic Development (Still). A Story Told In Graphs., Richey Piiparinen

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Since the 2000’s, it’s fair to say Cleveland has had “Pittsburgh envy”. This mostly meant resentment at the success of the city’s football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Meanwhile, in economic development circles a new envy was brewing. As Pittsburgh became the posterchild for a “Rust Belt renaissance”, Cleveland, too, wanted in on the re-imaging. Was the want wishful or warranted? This brief analysis investigates.
