Cultivating Graduate Stem Pathways: How Alliance-Based Stem Enrichment Programs Broker Opportunity For Students Of Color, Ariana L. Garcia, Tonisha B. Lane, Blanca E. Rincón

Educational Psychology, Leadership, and Higher Education Faculty Research

To understand how higher education institutions broker graduate opportunities for Students of Color (SOCs) in STEM, we employ a single case study of a Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) alliance. Drawing primarily from student interviews and informed by Small’s (2006) organizational brokerage theory, our findings illuminate how 1) alliance-based STEM enrichment programs (SEPs) bridge social capital via interorganizational networks and 2) how SEP instability creates barriers to building the trust that is central to the brokerage process. We conclude with recommendations for future research and practice.

Creating Sustainable Volunteer Programs: Understanding Why United4hope's Church Coordinators Volunteer, Stanley Weber Jul 2021

Creating Sustainable Volunteer Programs: Understanding Why United4hope's Church Coordinators Volunteer, Stanley Weber

Student Theses

Abstract Using the Volunteer Function Inventory (Clary et al., 1998), this descriptive research study gathered mean, median, and mode data of 42 United4Hope Church Coordinators (UCC) to further understand why each UCC had chosen to volunteer. This study is significant for U4H since these critical leaders provide leadership without traditional power sources and lead volunteers who can freely choose whether or not to follow. When applying Clary et al.’s (1998) 6-factor clusters, data showed that values (a means to express one’s altruistic and humanitarian values) motivation factors were the most significant factor across the group. This factor was followed by …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The Scholarly Communication Assessment Forum (SCAF) was planned to be held on the Sacramento State campus on May 4 & 5, 2020. When pandemic-related shelter-in-place restrictions were imposed in mid-March and it became clear an in-person event would be impossible, the project team had to quickly shift to a virtual event. While quickly changing the format of the event was challenging, there were also unexpected benefits. The project team was able to collect much richer data by recording all sessions and breakout discussions. Extending the timeline for the project also allowed for more in depth analysis of forum transcripts and …

Using Google Street View To Examine Urban Context And Green Amenities In The Global South: The Chilean Experience, Monica Haddad, Zachary Christman, Hamil Pearsall, Melinda Sanchez

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

This study evaluates the use of virtual, human-interpreted, field observations using Google Street View (GSV) to examine the presence of conditions that may be used to analyze green gentrification in the Global South. We propose that green gentrification is characterized by the introduction or improvement of green amenities (such as parks) as well as corresponding changes to the urban context (such as facade materials). While virtual field observations have been used to examine neighborhood context for other applications, this method has not yet been applied to the study of green gentrification, nor in the Global South. Using one urban park …

Visual Perception In Hearing Sign Language Users, Jessica M. Lammert Jul 2021

Visual Perception In Hearing Sign Language Users, Jessica M. Lammert

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Deaf signers exhibit superior visual perception compared to hearing controls in several domains, including the perception of faces and peripheral motion. These visual enhancements are thought to compensate for an absence of auditory input. However, it is also possible that they reflect experience using a visual-manual language, where signers must process complex moving hand signs and facial cues simultaneously. Thus, the current study sought to isolate the effects of sign language experience by examining how visual perception is altered as a function of American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency in hearing individuals. Hearing signers completed an online test of ASL proficiency …

Beyond ‘Fake News’: Opportunities And Constraints For Teaching News Literacy, Judith E. Rosenbaum, Jennifer L. Bonnet, R. Alan Berry Jul 2021

Beyond ‘Fake News’: Opportunities And Constraints For Teaching News Literacy, Judith E. Rosenbaum, Jennifer L. Bonnet, R. Alan Berry

Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints

Teaching news literacy has, in recent decades, become cross-disciplinary, and as a result, more collaborative. This paper centers the importance of this collaboration by describing a workshop designed and taught by a media studies professor, a media literacy expert, and their subject librarian. In this essay, we discuss the workshop in terms of best practices for teaching about media and information literacy in an era marked by digital news consumption and the proliferation of claims of “fake news.” First, we elaborate on the value of the collaboration between the discipline, the library, and the field, as it allowed us to …

Corruption, Campaigning, And Novelty: The 2020 Parliamentary Elections And The Evolving Patterns Of Party Politics In Slovakia, Tim Haughton, Marek Rybář, Kevin Deegan-Krause

Honors Scholarly Publications

Party politics across Central and Eastern Europe has become less structured. Many of the divides that anchored political competition have waned in recent years, weakening the attachment of voters to the existing palette of parties and making them more likely to be attracted to new and non-traditional electoral vehicles. But for such parties to succeed at the ballot box, they need to be able to frame elections and campaign effectively. Drawing on data from a specially commissioned survey, we find that the success of Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) led by Igor Matovič in the 2020 parliamentary elections in …

Handling Municipal Case Flow Management During A Pandemic, Jennifer Billings

Certified Public Manager® Applied Research

There is no right or wrong way to create your case flow management process. What works for one court, may not work for yours. The guidance provided by the Office of Court Administration, although confusing, played a major part in the Dayton Municipal Court’s success. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our court shut down all in-person proceedings. What we’ve learned about the pandemic response has provided our court and our defendants with new options in case management. Although we are now open, some of the new processes that were implemented during COVID-19 will continue to be used. Our relationships with peers …

MA Major Research Papers

The variety of policy and philosophical positions that exist with respect to the legitimacy and functionality of central banking is vast, and this paper aims to address how these positions align with the traditional notions of the ‘left-right’ political spectrum. This research project aims to create a typology of monetary policy and central bank philosophies based on political ideology. The project will attempt to identify group differences in the perception of central bank legitimacy, central bank functionality, monetary policy, and the role of central banks in broader society.

On Guessing: An Alternative Adjusted Positive Learning Estimator And Comparing Probability Misspecification With Monte Carlo Simulations, Ben O. Smith, Dustin R. White Jul 2021

On Guessing: An Alternative Adjusted Positive Learning Estimator And Comparing Probability Misspecification With Monte Carlo Simulations, Ben O. Smith, Dustin R. White

Economics Faculty Publications

Practitioners in the sciences have used the “flow” of knowledge (post-test score minus pre-test score) to measure learning in the classroom for the past 50 years. Walstad and Wagner, and Smith and Wagner moved this practice forward by disaggregating the flow of knowledge and accounting for student guessing. These estimates are sensitive to misspecification of the probability of guessing correct. This work provides guidance to practitioners and researchers facing this problem. We introduce a transformed measure of true positive learning that under some knowable conditions performs better when students’ ability to guess correctly is misspecified and converges to Hake’s normalized …

Parent Anxiety, Parental Psychological Control, And Adolescent Anxiety: Mediation And Bidirectional Relationships, Iesha R. Gibbons Jul 2021

Parent Anxiety, Parental Psychological Control, And Adolescent Anxiety: Mediation And Bidirectional Relationships, Iesha R. Gibbons

Theses and Dissertations

Anxiety is the most common mental health diagnosis for adolescents. Among important etiological factors are parent anxiety and parenting behavior, which can increase anxiety in adolescents. Adolescent anxiety can also act as a source of stress for parents that then increases parent anxiety and negative parenting behaviors. Using the Family Stress Model, this study aims to examine the longitudinal and bidirectional relationship between parent and adolescent anxiety with parental psychological control acting as a mediator. Structural equation modeling was used to examine these relationships across five waves of data for 457 families. Adolescents (51.86% female, mean age 13.34 at wave …

Most States Effectively Enroll Racial-Ethnic Minority Older Adults In Community-Based Aging Services, But Gaps Remain, Erin Bisesti, Claire Pendergrast

Population Health Research Brief Series

The population is aging, and a growing number of older adults lack adequate support for their long-term care needs. Older Americans Act (OAA) services aim to improve health and reduce nursing home placements for older adults by connecting them with community-based supports to address their unique needs and support independence. This research brief estimates state-level differences in the effectiveness of OAA-funded programs in enrolling racial-ethnic minority older adults. Although most states adequately enroll minority and Black older adult populations, over half do not adequately enroll Hispanic older adults.

Appreciating The Overlooked Contributions Of The New Harvard School, Christopher S. Yoo Jul 2021

Appreciating The Overlooked Contributions Of The New Harvard School, Christopher S. Yoo

All Faculty Scholarship

My colleague, Herbert Hovenkamp, is almost universally recognized as the most cited and the most authoritative US antitrust scholar. Among his many honors, his status as the senior author of the authoritative Areeda and Hovenkamp treatise makes him the unquestioned leader of the New Harvard School, which has long served as the bellwether for how courts are likely to resolve emerging issues in modern antitrust doctrine. Unfortunately, its defining tenets and its positions on emerging issues remain surprisingly obscure. My contribution to this festschrift explores the core commitments that distinguish the New Harvard School from other approaches to antitrust. It …

Women empowerment is one of the most challenging steps in surmounting the hindrance in a woman’s life that will finally enhance her qualities to contour her life and society. Women empowerment is integral to the achievement of all millennium development goals. Undoubtedly, the role of education in women empowerment is predominant and it has …
