St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Report, Vol. 23, No. 1, King Banaian, Richard Macdonald
St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Report
Revised data released by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) indicate St. Cloud area employment declined 6.5 percent over the twelve months ending January 2021. Area employment was 7,097 lower than one year earlier as the local recession continues into its second year. The pandemic has adversely affected nearly all local sectors—only the local construction center has experienced job growth over the past year. Ninety percent of the impact was felt in approximately one-half of area employment. For example, employment in the local leisure & hospitality sector was one-third lower over the past twelve months and the …
A Climate Chronology, Sharon S. Tisher
A Climate Chronology, Sharon S. Tisher
School of Economics Faculty Scholarship
The most challenging of all endeavors in human history will likely be that of understanding the impact of our industrial and technological enterprises on the planet’s climate and ecosystems, and responding effectively to the threats posed by that impact. I began writing this chronology while developing a climate policy course at the University of Maine. It has grown substantially during the ensuing nine years, and continues to grow.
By juxtaposing developments in climate science, U.S. policy, and international policy over the previous two centuries, I hope to give the reader new insights into where we have been, where we are …

S4e5 : How Do You Teach Political Science Without Being Political?, Ron Lisnet, Mark Brewer
The Maine Question
Mark Brewer has been particularly busy the last few years. In addition to his research and courses, the University of Maine political science professor is a respected go-to source for reporters seeking context about political events and the political climate.
Recently, Brewer found time to talk with podcast host Ron Lisnet about the role of politics in our lives. In Episode 5 of Season 4, Brewer explains ranked choice voting, the Electoral College, and the filibuster, and he shares how he teaches politics without getting political.

Development And Validation Of A Measure Of Birth-Related Ptsd For Fathers And Birth Partners: The City Birth Trauma Scale (Partner Version), Rebecca Webb, Ann M. Smith, Susan Ayers, Daniel B. Wright, Alexandra Thornton
Educational Psychology, Leadership, and Higher Education Faculty Research
Research suggests that some fathers and birth partners can experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after witnessing a traumatic birth. Birth-related PTSD may impact on many aspects of fathers’ and birth partners’ life, including relationship breakdown, self-blame and reducing plans for future children. Despite the potential impact on birth partners’ lives there is currently no measure of birth-related PTSD validated for use with birth partners. The current study therefore adapted the City Birth Trauma Scale for use with birth partners. The City Birth Trauma Scale (Partner version) is a 29-item questionnaire developed to measure birth-related PTSD according to DSM-5 criteria: stressor …

Stress And Coping In An Inner-City Environment: The Cities Mentor Project Coping Intervention With Youth Living In Urban Poverty, Jordan Horwath
Stress And Coping In An Inner-City Environment: The Cities Mentor Project Coping Intervention With Youth Living In Urban Poverty, Jordan Horwath
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Stress theory posits that exposure to stress predicts negative outcomes (Grant et al., 2003). Children residing in urban poverty are often exposed to multiple stressors which deleteriously impacts social, emotional, and academic well-being. The current study, which is derived from the Cities Mentor Project intervention, is a randomized control trial (RCT) designed to assess the impact of a coping curriculum (along with mentor support) on how adolescents cope with stressors. Participants were 54 6th grade students (31 intervention, 23 control), who ranged in age from 11-13 years old (M= 11.35, SD= 0.52), and 59.3% of participants were female. All participants …
Examining Health Disparities In A Community-Based Sample Of Children With Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Me/Cfs) Symptomatology, Chelsea Torres
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Previous literature examining overall health outcomes and outcomes specifically related to adults with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) have found disparities based on sociodemographic characteristics including race/ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status. There is currently little information known regarding demographic disparities in health outcomes for youth with ME/CFS symptomatology, though a recent prevalence study found Black and Latinx youth as well as females have higher rates of ME/CFS than White youth and males, respectively. The current study examined 137 youth who screened positive for ME/CFS symptomatology. Multiple linear regressions assessing demographic predictors on fatigue severity, number of symptoms endorsed, and overall …

The Role Of Institutional Repositories In Advancing Open Scholarship: A Case Study From The United Arab Emirates University, Amina Itani, Linda Östlundh Mrs.
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The digitization of theses and dissertations at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) began five years ago with the Digital Commons institutional repository (IR) platform, Scholarworks, employed for the purpose. The project, initiated by the University Library, exemplifies how academic libraries can take the lead in advocating for digital preservation and open access publishing of institutional research materials. This case study describes how the library’s Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) initiative has provided an excellent model to the UAEU for it to start disseminating its research output and how the library’s copyright and open access policies have been crucial for …

An Evaluation Of The Junior Sailing Program At The Norfolk Yacht And Country Club, Bryce Mahler
Undergraduate Research Symposium
With COVID-19 becoming a lingering and dangerous issue in everyday life, youth are struggling to have outdoor outlets for memories, physical health, and to acquire important skills. The Norfolk Yacht and Country Club Junior Sailing Program was created to give the youth the opportunity to learn about sailing and compete. They compete with different yacht clubs from all over the Chesapeake Bay Area. There are slightly less participants in this fall program due to concerns of COVID-19. Data was collected over roughly a month period (February 21 – March 28). With White Fleet and Blue Fleet meeting Saturday and Green …

Six Steps Toward Improving Discoverability Of Ph.D. Dissertations, Ljubomir Paskali, Lidija Ivanović, Dragan Ivanović, Dušan Surla
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study proposes six steps that scientific institutions should undertake to increase the visibility and accessibility of their dissertations; these steps were implemented in the digital library of the University of Novi Sad. An analysis was conducted thereafter to evaluate the success, and it was found that the six steps and associated strategies were successful, with 400,000 downloads having been performed since the digital library was operational. Although this study presents six steps for improving electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) discoverability in the digital library at the University of Novi Sad, these steps can easily be customized and implemented for …

My poster is over the life and work of May-Britt Moser. Moser is an accomplished psychologist and neuroscientist who has made strides towards better understanding Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's negatively impacts more than six million Americans every year, every 65 seconds an individual is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and the disease kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. While May-Britt Moser is still working towards a cure for Alzheimer's and memory-related disease, she has developed ground-breaking research and knowledge that has opened the gates for others to pursue a change and fix for the disease once and for all.

Turning The Page: Using Foucauldian Rhetorical Criticism To Evaluate Literacy Center Communication, Sarah Monsma
Theses and Dissertations
Literacy, or the ability to read at or above a determined level, is an important and necessary skill. Many adult education programs exist to provide adults with specific educational resources. Literacy centers and programs contribute a vital resource to their respective communities, in helping adults who struggle with reading obtain their goals. In this thesis, I focused on the one such organization in particular, the Literacy Center of West Michigan. This organization utilizes regularly updated forms of online communication, including a News & Blog site on their website with 165 articles pertaining to the experiences of learners, background of staff …
Examining The Impact Of Socioeconomic Variables On Covid-19 Death Rates At The State Level, James L. Doti
Examining The Impact Of Socioeconomic Variables On Covid-19 Death Rates At The State Level, James L. Doti
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
This study uses a step-wise regression model to identify the socioeconomic variables most significant in explaining COVID-19 death rates on a state-level basis. The regression tests cover the 1/1/2020 to 12/1/2020 period as well as the first and second halves of 2020. This study also uses the Oxford stringency index to measure more precisely the efficacy of governmental mandates at the state level. The results in this study rigorously showed that while the density variables were the most significant explanatory variables during the first half of the year, their significance fell during the second half. Use of the Oxford stringency …

Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics And Karl Popper’S Three Worlds, Changpu Sun
Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics And Karl Popper’S Three Worlds, Changpu Sun
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Base on the view of material monism, this paper explains how quantum mechanics describes the objectivity of the microscopic world. It points out that the challenge posed by the Copenhagen interpretation to the fundamental problem of philosophy is not essential, due to its adoption of the wave-packet collapse hypothesis which is non-unique to implement repeatable measurement. Therefore, the conclusion that matter and consciousness are inseparable is not rigorous either from scientific or from philosophical perspective. With regard to Karl Popper's philosophy of "three worlds", our quantum theory of measurement describes how the multiple observers probe into the micro system to …

What are the nature and goal of Intelligent Technology? What are the origin and mission of Intelligent Science? What are the impact and significance of Intelligent Industries to our societies and the future development of Human Being? Starting from the topic of AlphaGo, based on Karl Popper's Three Worlds theory, this article addresses the above questions and discussed the beginning and trend of Artificial Intelligence and Parallel Intelligence. It then proposes Parallel Philosophy as the new philosophy system for Intelligent Science and Intelligent Technology, which extends the scope of traditional philosophy from Being, Becoming to Believing, and the corresponding Knowledge …

Cultivation Of Philosophy: 30-Year Mugwort For China To Build Itself Into World Power Of Science And Technology, Yuehong Zhang, Fang Jiang, Dengwei Liu
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Since the founding of the People's Republic of China more than 70 years ago, China's science and technology development has gained great achievements. However, some deep-rooted problems still pose serious impediments for China to build itself into a world power of science and technology in the next 30 years. It is a must for us to explore the root causes of these problems and find the solution. Through the analysis of the historical context of the "Needham Puzzle" and "Qian Xuesen's Question", as well as the philosophical origin of the bottleneck of China's science and technology development, this study proposed …

A Lion’S Blues: Heroism, Heroic Self-Representations, And Emotional Distress In The Life And Character Of Yonatan (Yoni) Netanyahu, Golan Shahar, Raz Bauminger, Shai Itamar
Heroism Science
The realization that heroism – representing either a trait or a value system – is potentially pernicious is important for both scientific and societal reasons. In this article, we adopt a psychobiographical perspective to analyze the character and life of one of Israel’s greatest heroes, Yonathan (“Yoni”) Netanyahu. Yoni was an illustrious military leader, as well as an outstanding intellectual and adored persona. He served as the commander of the special operation forces spearheading the famous Entebbe Operation during which Israeli commando forces rescued hostages taken captive in Uganda. Yoni was the only military causality in this operation, which was …
