Choice Of Law Governing A Contract Where Its Existence Is In Dispute: Clarifications From The Singapore International Commercial Court In Lew, Solomon V Kaikhushru Shiavax Nargolwala, Shou Yu Chong
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The Singapore International Commercial Court’s judgment in Lew, Solomon v Kaikhushru Shiavax Nargolwala [2020] 3 SLR 61 is noteworthy as it heralds a modest development in Singapore private international law, especially in respect to the not uncommon issue of disputes over cross-border contracts where its existence is challenged. This case represents one of the handful of Singapore precedents which directly addresses the difficult conundrum where both the governing law and the existence of the underlying contract are in dispute. Under this context, it articulates a default choice of law position – the lex fori – where it is impossible to …

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
“Data is the new oil”. Just like oil, which powered the economy in the last century, data are what moves the world today. This is especially true for international trade. The crucial role played by data can be observed at every step of the process, from the conception of a new product and the sourcing of raw materials and parts, to the manufacturing process and the transportation of products across borders, until they finally reach the hands of consumers from every corner of the world.

Wto Reform: A China Round, Henry S. Gao
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Since its accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), China's exports have been growing exponentially. In 2009, China became the world's top goods exporter. Four years later, China unseated the United States as the top trading nation in the world. In contrast to the burgeoning Chinese economy, the United States and Europe have been suffering from economic decline since the global financial crisis in 2008. China regards its rise as a long overdue restoration of its rightful position, as it has been the largest economy in the world for most of its history, except the brief aberration over the past …

The Case For Public Investment In Higher Pay For New York State Home Care Workers: Estimated Costs And Savings, Isaac Jabola-Carolus, Stephanie Luce, Ruth Milkman
Publications and Research
This report explores one potential solution to the mounting home care labor shortage in New York State: substantially raising wages for the state's home care workers. The analysis presents detailed projections, based on the best available data, of the economic effects of such an intervention, estimating the costs and benefits that would result. We find that public funding to raise home care wages would require significant resources, but those costs would be surpassed by the resulting savings, tax revenues, and economic spillover effects. The net economic gain would total at least $3.7 billion. Lifting wages would also help fill nearly …

Covid-19 has presented a new set of challenges in every area; higher education is one of them. The pandemic has resulted in a shift in teaching and learning communication methods, creating a new structure for digital-based education. This study investigates this phenomenon through the perspective of Castells’ Network Society Theory to see the relational capacity of education in rural Indonesia. Exploring Mindfulness As An Illness Pathway Between Eating Disorder And Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms, Emma G. Roberts, Brenna M. Williams, Cheri Levinson
Grawemeyer Colloquium Papers
Eating disorders (EDs) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have high rates of comorbidity. One shared protective factor for PTSD and ED symptoms is mindfulness. However, research on how mindfulness relates to ED-PTSD comorbidity is limited. Thus, the current study used network analysis to explore aspects of mindfulness as illness pathways bridging (i.e., connecting) symptoms among comorbid ED and PTSD symptoms. We hypothesized that mindfulness would negatively relate to ED and PTSD symptoms.
Participants (N=709 undergraduate students) completed self-report ED, PTSD, and mindfulness measures. Network analysis was conducted using R.
Five symptoms were identified as being the most central. …

The Role Of Parents’ Negative Emotional Symptoms, Time Homebound, And Parent-Infant Interactions During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kolbie A. Vincent, Katherine G. Golway, Cara H. Cashon
Grawemeyer Colloquium Papers
Parent-child interaction plays a vital role in child development. Previous research has shown that parents’ negative emotional symptoms are related to the quality of parent-child interactions.
Parents with depression have been found to be less engaged and spend less time playing with their babies at 3 months of age compared to parents without depression. While depression has been researched extensively, there is a scarcity in the literature on other negative emotions, such as anxiety and general stress and their relation to parent-child interaction.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant changes in the daily lives of caregivers and their infants …

One of the areas in Indonesia that still has many social problems such as unemployment, poverty, health, or regional planning is kampong. Various programs have been carried out by the government as an effort to improve social development so that the kampongs are no longer in a condition called distorted development. One of the kampong improvement efforts in Indonesia is the thematic village program. Several regions in Indonesia use thematic kampongs as a means of promoting local potential, regional development solutions, …

This paper presents an ongoing project to collect as-it-happens data on CEAL libraries’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, and discusses the information collected so far. The author collected website and social network site postings of CEAL libraries (n=43), which were posted from March to mid-September, 2020, and analyzed them using visualization tools. In the period of initial responses in March, most CEAL libraries suspended in-person reference services and circulation of print holdings, and closed their physical locations to patrons. Access to print books restarted in some libraries during the spring semester/quarter, while other services remained relatively unchanged. Print collections became …
