Perceiving Sociable Technology: Exploring The Role Of Anthropomorphism And Agency Perception On Human-Computer Interaction (Hci), Jose Pineda

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the arrival of personal assistants and other AI-enabled autonomous technologies, social interactions with smart devices have become a part of our daily lives. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important to understand how these social interactions emerge, and why users appear to be influenced by them. For this reason, I explore questions on what the antecedents and consequences of this phenomenon, known as anthropomorphism, are as described in the extant literature from fields ranging from information systems to social neuroscience. I critically analyze those empirical studies directly measuring anthropomorphism and those referring to it without a corresponding measurement. Through a grounded …

An Ethical Framework For Interprofessional Social Work Education And Practice With Clients And Professionals, Misty G. Smith, Felicia Law Murray Feb 2021

An Ethical Framework For Interprofessional Social Work Education And Practice With Clients And Professionals, Misty G. Smith, Felicia Law Murray

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Social work students must interface with other professionals amid diverse disciplines and settings. While aspects of their work requires independent practice, students also encounter practice environments that require cross-system approaches that can create ethical conflicts and dilemmas. Interprofessional collaboration and ethical decision making are specific behavioral outcomes students must demonstrate to achieve competency upon social work degree completion. In social work education, scholarship that highlights the benefits of exposing students to interprofessional education (IPE) is an emerging area. Gastmans’ Dignity Enhancing Care Model and the Generalist Social Work Practice Framework have been adapted to create an integrated framework, the Generalist …

A Buddhist-Informed Conceptual Framework For Compassion Fatigue Prevention, Andrei A. Agapi Feb 2021

A Buddhist-Informed Conceptual Framework For Compassion Fatigue Prevention, Andrei A. Agapi

University Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to present Buddhist meditation practices and modes of investigation that can mitigate compassion fatigue, some of which have not yet been acknowledged in this research field. Conducting a literature review, I found multiple frameworks for compassion fatigue that have different and sometimes contradictory causes, and a lack of clear differentiation between sympathy, empathy and compassion. Both of these aspects are explored. I explain the Buddhist approach to compassion, and the cause of fatigue from a Yogachara philosophical perspective. Then, I write about a bodhisattva’s training in no-self, the five-aggregate model of mind, Chenrezig practice, …

The Facets Of Transitional Justice And 'Red Terror' Mass Trials Of Derg Officials In Post-1991 Ethiopia: Reassessing Its Achievements And Pitfalls, Kinkino Kia Legide Feb 2021

The Facets Of Transitional Justice And 'Red Terror' Mass Trials Of Derg Officials In Post-1991 Ethiopia: Reassessing Its Achievements And Pitfalls, Kinkino Kia Legide

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

At the end of the state perpetrated largescale violence, two important puzzling questions need to be addressed by post-conflict states. The first one chiefly concern how to ensure accountability or fight impunity, and the second is concerned with how to transform a society wrecked by prolonged conflicts into a durable peace in a non-violent means (Jarstad & Sisk, 2008). One such effort to deal with these questions was implementation of a transitional justice measures which evolved to encompass broader themes in addition to criminal accountability and it has shown a considerable relevance and expansion since the end of Cold War. …

Migrations Internationales. Entre Enjeux Traditionnel Et Nouveaux Défis, Leonidas Ndayisaba

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

The Impacts Of Political Conflicts In Africa, Douglas Kimemia Feb 2021

The Impacts Of Political Conflicts In Africa, Douglas Kimemia

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

The number of conflicts and deaths in Africa is rooted in the complex constructions and conjectures of Africa’s political economies, weak institutions, social identities, and cultural ecologies, as configured by specific local, national, regional, and historical experiences. Using real-time data of violent and nonviolent events in Africa, this paper analyzes the most significant indicators. The paper finds that Gross Domestic Product, corruption, state legitimacy, ethnic fractionalization, political effectiveness, and polity are significant in modeling the likelihood of political instability. The paper concludes that African countries require reconfiguration of the public and social institutions without ignoring the human factor that accelerate …

Contextualizing The Politics Of Ten-Household Cluster Initiatives (Nyumba Kumi) For Human Security In Kenya, Edmond M. Were, Paul A. Opondo Feb 2021

Contextualizing The Politics Of Ten-Household Cluster Initiatives (Nyumba Kumi) For Human Security In Kenya, Edmond M. Were, Paul A. Opondo

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

National security has been a preserve of the State to the detriment of the welfare of the masses. Human security on the other hand incorporates the basic security elements that are globally recognized and touch on the daily lives of the masses. The Ten Household Cluster Initiatives that have been practiced in East Asia, Caribbean and parts of Western Europe and adapted in Eastern Africa are an avenue through which human security can be addressed though they are tightly controlled by the state and characterized by human rights flaws. Their rationalization is anchored in theories of individualism and communitarianism that …

State Building In Post Conflict Rwanda: Popular Participation Of Citizen In Local Conflict Mitigation, Innocent Ndahiriwe Feb 2021

State Building In Post Conflict Rwanda: Popular Participation Of Citizen In Local Conflict Mitigation, Innocent Ndahiriwe

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

When studying local state building this article addresses the questions how does state led conflict mitigation in post conflict Rwanda work? How is it experienced by the citizens in terms of participation, accountability and local state legitimacy? Theoretically, the study engages with literature on state-building, state society relations and local conflict mitigation. The study’s findings have indicated that the citizens’ contribution to local state-building was still modest due to low motivation among the citizens involved in the conflict mitigation process due to insufficient resources and infrastructure in the conflict mitigation process, despite the fact that the state has granted legal …

Nonverbal Mashups: Exploring Metacommunication In Mediated Interpersonal Contexts, Evelyn Plummer Feb 2021

Nonverbal Mashups: Exploring Metacommunication In Mediated Interpersonal Contexts, Evelyn Plummer

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Contemporary communication is highly mediated, whereas much of the extant research in nonverbal communication derives from studies referencing face-to-face contexts. This teaching activity explores the continued relevance of this foundational knowledge about communicating without words and the ways it continues to be manifested in new ways and in new contexts. For example, although the dimensions of his findings often are misrepresented, Albert Mehrabian's (1972, 1981) initial findings indicated that the nonverbal channel is a primary tool in the communication of emotions and feelings. Similarly, the emotional messages within mediated communication often are accomplished with non-word tools, providing a metacommunicational functionality--reflecting …

Effects Of Television Content On Children’S Development Of Traditional Gender Role Schemata: A Literature Review, Molly Shilo Feb 2021

Effects Of Television Content On Children’S Development Of Traditional Gender Role Schemata: A Literature Review, Molly Shilo

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Despite the progress television has made since its creation, the medium unfortunately still portrays subtle, and not so subtle, gender stereotypes, especially in children’s television shows. Content analyses have documented the pervasive stereotypes set forth on TV that not only portray strict behaviors for both males and females, but that also often depict the female behaviors and characters as inferior (Calvert, 1999). In a wave of advocacy and regulation, parents, teachers, and children have demanded shows that better promote inclusivity and appropriate, family-friendly values. The Children’s Television Act of 1990 required broadcasters to provide educational children’s programming that would teach …

Are Gender Portrayals Of Children In Advertisements Stereotypical?, Monica Brasted Feb 2021

Are Gender Portrayals Of Children In Advertisements Stereotypical?, Monica Brasted

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Advertising directed at children has been the topic of considerable research and debate. Several researchers have discussed the various concerns and criticisms of children's advertising, while attempting to sort out the factors likely to contribute to young readers/viewers responses to advertiser's persuasive attempts (Kolbe & Muehling, 1995). One of the main criticisms of advertising has been concerned with the use of stereotyped gender role portrayals by advertisers. This paper seeks to answer the question of whether or not gender role portrayals in advertisements featuring children are stereotypical. A review of the literature from the past couple of decades reveals that …

In A Network, All Concerns Are Your Concerns: Applying The “Dual Concerns” Conflict Management Model To Communication Networks, Evelyn Plummer Feb 2021

In A Network, All Concerns Are Your Concerns: Applying The “Dual Concerns” Conflict Management Model To Communication Networks, Evelyn Plummer

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

The core premise of general systems theory (summarized by Bertalanffy, 1968) establishes that the elements within a given system have an interdependent and reciprocal relationship that creates a system-specific pattern of function. For some time, this analytical perspective of interconnectedness has been applied in many disciplines, including the study of human interaction (e.g. Ruesch & Bateson, 1951). Conflict situations, as with all systems, are not static and manifest with changing linkages and relationships. A more holistic attention to the structural complexity and the ever-changing features of conflict in systems can provide a more pragmatic, network-based understanding of group operations in …

Music? Yes, Music!, Evelyn Plummer Feb 2021

Music? Yes, Music!, Evelyn Plummer

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Question: "Do you like music?" Response: " Doesn't everybody?" This recent exchange with a college student characterizes a familiar pattern whereby popular music infuses the lives of our society's youth. Through targeted song selections, this teaching activity guides students to examine explicit and implicit messages found in the lyrics. Two structural options are offered. Students explore and compare either (1) specified types of expressed and/or implied statements in reference to the interpersonal values and the persuasive (rhetorical) goals reflected in the language (i.e. lyrics) of contemporary popular music, or (2) the messages and social reality reflected in the language (i.e. …

Humans Gone Wild: Analysis Of Zoo Controversy Regarding Online Communication And Public Agenda, April Rink Feb 2021

Humans Gone Wild: Analysis Of Zoo Controversy Regarding Online Communication And Public Agenda, April Rink

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Modern zoological parks, as community enterprises housing exotic animals with hundreds, sometimes thousands of visitors every day, must prepare for the innate possibility of dangerous situations. When such controversy does arise, clashing viewpoints among media outlets, the zoo’s communications department, and the public’s mediated communication encourages examination with a theoretical eye. This paper utilizes the controversy of the Copenhagen Zoo’s public dissections to illustrate each of the parties’ influence on one another through Bitzer’s Rhetorical Situation. That analysis lays the groundwork justifying the public’s influence on the media’s agenda, also illustrated through the Cincinnati Zoo’s controversy regarding Harambe the gorilla. …

Publicly Private: Disclosing Grief On Facebook*, Elizabeth R. Dobson Feb 2021

Publicly Private: Disclosing Grief On Facebook*, Elizabeth R. Dobson

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

This essay examines the transition of the grieving process into the online realm of social network sites—specifically Facebook—through two prominent communication theories: social penetration theory and communication privacy management theory. The desire for both openness and human connection through the disclosure of personal information and the maintaining of privacy boundaries is made evident by analyzing this social phenomenon through these two theories. Disclosing grief on Facebook can be advantageous by developing relational closeness among mourners, but it can also create discomfort when acquaintances, or people with less intimate relationships with the discloser, view the personal feelings of loss. Additionally, disclosing …

Honoring The Past: What Remains Relevant?, Susan Drucker, Suzanne N. Berman, Mario Gonzalez, Jingsi Wu, Joe Peyronnin, Mary L. Kahl

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Honoring the Past: Are they Still Relevant?

At a time when communication technologies and patterns of interaction and dissemination change at an ever faster pace, this session explores obsolescence and continued relevance. Why study Aristotle in an age of social media? Is cursive handwriting still important? Are printed maps, newspapers and magazines now passe? Is film dead? Are normative theories obsolete? Each contributor to this article selected a particular technology, theory, founding figure and argued for or against their continued significance.

Import Restrictions By Eco-Certification: Quantity Effects On Tropical Timber Production, Matthew T. Cole, Jacqueline M. Doremus, Stephen F. Hamilton Feb 2021

Import Restrictions By Eco-Certification: Quantity Effects On Tropical Timber Production, Matthew T. Cole, Jacqueline M. Doremus, Stephen F. Hamilton

Economics

Eco-certification standards are increasingly used by industrial countries to restrict imports of foreign goods produced using unsustainable practices. Import restrictions on eco-certified goods limit the trade of goods to the home country, but also serve to segment global demand into separate regions for conventional goods and certified goods, altering market structure and equilibrium prices in a manner that can work against sustainability goals. In this paper, we examine the effect of recent import restrictions in the US, EU, Canada, and Japan that require tropical timber products produced in Central Africa to be eco-certified. Using panel data of timber production in …

Examining Chronic And Transient Poverty Using The Community-Based Monitoring System System (Cbms) Data, Alellie B. Sobreviñas Feb 2021

Examining Chronic And Transient Poverty Using The Community-Based Monitoring System System (Cbms) Data, Alellie B. Sobreviñas

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

With poverty reduction as the government’s primary goal, monitoring the poverty situation of households is deemed necessary. In the Philippines, several local government units (LGUs) have adopted the Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS) as a local poverty-monitoring tool. This study used the constructed CBMS panel data for the municipality of Orion in Bataan province consisting of 4,299 panel households (for the period 2006, 2009, and 2012) to identify chronic and transient poor households.
