Toward A Continuum For Jesuit Education Founded Upon Cura Personalis And Magis, Jose Miguel Jaramillo Apr 2024

Toward A Continuum For Jesuit Education Founded Upon Cura Personalis And Magis, Jose Miguel Jaramillo

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation examines the principles and purposes of Jesuit education, renowned for integrating academic excellence with spiritual and civic values, in search of decision-making criteria. While Jesuit schools followed the 1599 Ratio studiorum, they now adhere to guidelines set by the International Commission for the Apostolate of Jesuit Education (ICAJE). Despite ICAJE's comprehensive framework, a gap exists in providing explicit criteria for educational decision-making beyond calling to discern. Employing a thematic qualitative content analysis method, this research analyzes ICAJE’s documents through a hermeneutic lens, drawing upon foundational Jesuit educational sources and significant contemporary studies. Key findings suggest that these principles …

Extending Mnrega To Address The Social, Economic And Ecological Costs Of Climate Change And Create Public Sector Climate Jobs, Shriraksha Mohan Apr 2024

Extending Mnrega To Address The Social, Economic And Ecological Costs Of Climate Change And Create Public Sector Climate Jobs, Shriraksha Mohan

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

Job Guarantee policies make public sector jobs available for those who are able and willing to work. Job guarantee schemes must work in a democratic and inclusive manner to tackle both unemployment and precarious employment, with the goal of eliminating poverty-wages and poor labor standards. In India, a social welfare measure for job guarantee, MNREGA – Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, was enacted in 2005 with the aim to guarantee the constitutional ‘right to work’. MNREGA scheme guarantees employment for 100 days to one individual in every rural household. In the context of climate-related events and disasters, this …

Navigating The Shadows: Unraveling The Complex Threads Of Childhood Adversity And Its Implications On Academic Achievement And Self-Efficacy, Sydney Tucker

Honors Projects in Psychology

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are defined as traumatic events that occur between the ages of one and seventeen. These instances of neglect, abuse, and household dysfunction can contribute to poor outcomes in the realm of academics as children mature into adults and pursue higher education. In addition, the presence of ACEs can lead to a decline in an individual’s belief in his or her capacity to attain academic success, also known as self-efficacy. This study aims to explore how the presence of ACEs within a Bryant University student’s life impacts their academic achievement, as measured through GPA and attendance patterns, …

The Economic Impacts Of State-Run Agricultural Energy Efficiency And Sustainability Grants – Are There Actually Long-Term Profit And Labor Market Benefits?, Amanda Spielman Apr 2024

The Economic Impacts Of State-Run Agricultural Energy Efficiency And Sustainability Grants – Are There Actually Long-Term Profit And Labor Market Benefits?, Amanda Spielman

Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics

Farms, whether large, public corporations, or small family farms are often considered the backbone of America. Due to the impact of weather on crop production, the fluctuation in input prices, and the reliance of the rest of the economy on the agricultural industry, the government provides support programs and funding opportunities for farmers to help provide price and production stability. While some studies have been completed to assess the effectiveness of federally funded agriculture programs, little research has been done on the impact of state programs and is especially lacking on the effectiveness of sustainability programs. This study aims to …

Engaging In Art To Support Social-Emotional Learning (Eassel): A Classroom-Based Approach, Hailey Mcafee-Scimone

PsyD Program in Clinical Psychology Doctoral Dissertations (New England)

This dissertation describes a project to develop an art-based curriculum to teach young elementary school-age children social and emotional skills in the classroom based on the experiences of experts in the field of elementary education. Social-emotional learning (SEL) focuses on several key concepts including skills in interpersonal relationships, emotion regulation, and mindfulness (McClelland et al., 2017). By addressing SEL early within the education curriculum, children are exposed to resources that will help them to develop strong regulation skills, engage in identity exploration, and practice healthy relationship skills (Jones et al., 2017). The integration of SEL and art creates a learning …

Play Over Talk: A Toolkit For Educators On Adverse Childhood Experiences, Brianna Gallegos, Mary Ann Smith, Cat Daniel Apr 2024

Play Over Talk: A Toolkit For Educators On Adverse Childhood Experiences, Brianna Gallegos, Mary Ann Smith, Cat Daniel

Spring 2024 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic experiences that can lead to negative, lasting effects on the health and well-being of the child. Students who have ACEs are more likely to struggle in school, have difficulty paying attention, lack self-regulation skills, and struggle to control their emotions and behaviors. Teachers and school staff may not recognize or know how to support students who have adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) which can impact the child’s occupational role as a student. To date, a resource for school staff with information on ACEs, interventions, and strategies has not been created. The purpose of this project …

To Walk The Earth In Safety 23rd Edition (Fy2023), Cisr Jmu Apr 2024

To Walk The Earth In Safety 23rd Edition (Fy2023), Cisr Jmu

Global CWD Repository

In this year’s edition of To Walk the Earth in Safety, we highlight the many ways that U.S. conventional weapons destruction assistance promotes post-conflict recovery. For example, our humanitarian demining funding enhances food security by helping to revitalize agricultural fields in countries like Sri Lanka and Vietnam. This funding is especially critical in Sri Lanka where more than 6 million people—nearly 30 percent of the population—are currently food-insecure. In Vietnam, our commitment to promoting agricultural security is a key component to successful post-conflict recovery, even decades after war ended.

The United States is the world’s top supporter of conventional …

Naturalist Thomas Hardy's Inadvertent Support Of The Gospel Narrative When Portraying Sexual Abuse And Shame In Tess Of The D'Urbervilles, Hannah Carmichael Apr 2024

Naturalist Thomas Hardy's Inadvertent Support Of The Gospel Narrative When Portraying Sexual Abuse And Shame In Tess Of The D'Urbervilles, Hannah Carmichael

Master of Arts in Classical Studies

In his novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles, the naturalist author Thomas Hardy attempts to critique the 19th-century Christian perspective on sexual abuse. Instead, he inadvertently critiques legalism, exposing it as the antithesis of true Christianity. Secular scholars believe that Hardy’s novel is blaming the Victorian era’s sexual ignorance for the stigma and shame surrounding sexual abuse. Christian scholars believe that Hardy’s naturalistic worldview simply lacks a moral standard. However, I believe that Hardy’s novel exposes an issue far deeper than sexual ignorance and lacks something far more substantive than a moral standard; his novel addresses the devastating consequences of …

Development Under Erasure: Deconstruction In Development Discourse, Micah Gill Apr 2024

Development Under Erasure: Deconstruction In Development Discourse, Micah Gill

Honors Theses

Jacques Derrida’s theory of deconstruction has been historically underappreciated in development. Yet Derrida’s critical theory realizes development as an inherently deconstructive field, one which advocates for the Other when disciplines such as economics and international relations overlook them. By examining the history of development through a Derridean lens, we can see how deconstruction was working within some of the development discourse’s prominent shifts leading up to its “impasse” in the 1980s. Heightened critical attention around this time catalyzed a flurry of deconstructive processes in the following years which have reshaped the landscape of development scholarship and practice. The story of …

On Stephen King, And The “What” And “Why” Of American Archivist, Amy Cooper Cary Apr 2024

On Stephen King, And The “What” And “Why” Of American Archivist, Amy Cooper Cary

Library Faculty Research and Publications

The mix of articles in this issue cuts a broad swath through several topics current in our literature, and trying to decide how to bring it all together in an editor's column was giving me fits. An issue that moves from community archives to contingent workers, to promotion and tenure, to congressional collections, to access systems, to engagement—well, it's not easy for me to wrap my editorial head around, let alone for you to thread your way through as a reader. It's a great problem to have, but I needed to make sense of it. Terry Baxter's 2023 SAA Presidential …

Climate Storytelling: An Experiment In Interdisciplinary Course Design, Gabrielle Jean Laipenieks Apr 2024

Climate Storytelling: An Experiment In Interdisciplinary Course Design, Gabrielle Jean Laipenieks

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

It is becoming increasingly clear across many fields of research that to effectively address the climate crisis, new and innovative methods are needed that engage nontechnical dimensions of climate change, including the social and emotional effects of a rapidly changing world. A gap exists within environmental curricula at Western Washington University that does not accommodate these dimensions, nor the negative impacts of disastrous climate change narratives on students’ sense of professional efficacy. Storytelling has significant potential toward this end for community building, expression of climate emotions, and in political advocacy. I explored the uses of oral storytelling as an alternative …

Examining The Accessibility Of Digital Payment: The Rise Of Socioeconomic Inequality Due To The Cashless Revolution, Kaylie Mcrea Apr 2024

Examining The Accessibility Of Digital Payment: The Rise Of Socioeconomic Inequality Due To The Cashless Revolution, Kaylie Mcrea

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

This paper analyzes the evolution of cashless payment, known as the cashless revolution, and its complex contributions to socioeconomic inequality. While a cashless global society is ultimately inevitable, it will contribute to significant inequity. People who cannot access bank accounts will struggle to participate in the buying and selling of goods and services. In societies with a weak social welfare net and a low percentage of overall banked citizens, there must be multifaceted solutions to mitigate effects of the ongoing cashless revolution. These solutions include the issuing of central bank digital currencies, financial literacy programs, and economic incentives to offset …

Exploring The Effects Of Cannabidiol And Beta-Caryophyllene On Stress-Induced Allodynia In Mice, Simone Player, Alana Sullivan, Josh Kaplan Apr 2024

Exploring The Effects Of Cannabidiol And Beta-Caryophyllene On Stress-Induced Allodynia In Mice, Simone Player, Alana Sullivan, Josh Kaplan

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

This research explores the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) and beta-caryophyllene (BC; two phytochemicals produced by the plant, Cannabis sativa L.) on stress-induced allodynia in mice. Stress causes a body-wide inflammatory response that can lead to allodynia, which is a painful response to previously innocuous stimuli. Current treatments for stress-induced inflammation can have unwanted effects and addictive potential, creating a need for alternatives. To explore the therapeutic effects of CBD and BC, wildtype and BTBR mice were tested for sensitivity to mechanical stimuli using the Von Frey Nociception Test. The results reveal that both CBD and BC individually show potential as …

Behavioral Multigenerational Outcomes Of Mild In-Utero Stress In C.Elegans, Aicha Tokar Falatah Apr 2024

Behavioral Multigenerational Outcomes Of Mild In-Utero Stress In C.Elegans, Aicha Tokar Falatah

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Past research has shown that maternal stress, also known as in-utero stress, results in anxiety-, depression-, and schizophrenia-like behaviors in rodent models. Changes in glutamate receptor expression, namely NMDA and AMPA receptors, have also been observed. Past studies in our lab demonstrated that In-utero stress in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) produces significant intergenerational differences in spontaneous locomotor behavior. Extending from this result, the current study investigates the multigenerational effects of chronic mild stress on learning in C. elegans. The parental generation is subjected to stress using a chronic, unpredictable stress protocol adapted from rodent chronic stress models. Age-synchronized Wild-Type (N2) …

Understories: A Queer Rewilding Of Ecology And Literature, Aina Zabinski Apr 2024

Understories: A Queer Rewilding Of Ecology And Literature, Aina Zabinski

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

This capstone project metaphorays into rewilding contemporary climate conscious literature and biology research related to forests. It situates (under)stories as firmly rooted in the context of queer ecology, pointing to a non-essentialist and anti-colonialist view of the world that strongly endorses the significance of environmental humanities in liberation work. Climate change and its connection to systems of social oppression necessitate a breakdown of the divide between arts and sciences in hopes of sustainable futures in the Anthropocene. Storytelling plays an important role in this. Queer eco-literature will not save the world on its own, of course, but it does hold …

Against The Tragedy: The Role Of Meaning Making In Sustainable Commons, Liam Kenwood Apr 2024

Against The Tragedy: The Role Of Meaning Making In Sustainable Commons, Liam Kenwood

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

The concept of “the tragedy of the commons” is a pervasive idea throughout the disciplines of environmental science, economics, law, and political science. It is a metaphor to describe how human use of a common pool of goods leads to depletion of the commons. Typically, the enclosure of the commons under state or private control is the prescribed solution to this environmental dilemma. This article refutes the tragedy of the commons by reviewing the contemporary field of commons studies, referencing the consequences of enclosure, and offering new criticisms of the concept. Studying the commons reveals how the urge to seek …
