I Am Not Your Felon: Decoding The Trauma, Resilience, And Recovering Mothering Of Formerly Incarcerated Black Women, Jason M. Williams, Zoe Spencer, Sean K. Wilson

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Black women are increasingly targets of mass incarceration and reentry. Black feminist writers call attention to scholars’ need to intersectionalize analyses around how Black women interface with state systems and social institutions. This study foregrounds narratives from Black women to understand their plight while navigating reentry through a phenomenological approach. Through semi-structured interviews, narratives are analyzed using critical frameworks that authentically unearths the lived realities of participants. Themes reveal that for Black mothers, reentry can be just as criminalizing as engaging crime itself. These women face dire consequences around their mothering that induce them into tremendous bouts of trauma. Existing …

How Should We Express Gratitude? The Effects Of Method And Focus Of Gratitude Expressions On The Self, The Other, And The Relationship, Laurette J. Mcilwee Nov 2020

How Should We Express Gratitude? The Effects Of Method And Focus Of Gratitude Expressions On The Self, The Other, And The Relationship, Laurette J. Mcilwee

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Two studies investigated the interpersonal and intrapersonal functions of gratitude expressions. In Study 1, participants expressed gratitude to a confederate in a lab paradigm (or expressed it privately) and consequently rated the confederate as significantly warmer and more competent. Sharing gratitude also led to a fortification of basic needs (belonging, self-esteem, meaning in life, and control). Study 2 attempted to replicate these results in addition to evaluating their own warmth and competence. Participants completed a week-long gratitude intervention that tested potential differences in the proposed two-factor model of gratitude expressions (manner of expression: private/shared, focus of gratitude: person/situation). The hypotheses …

Who Creates Family-Supportive Work Environments? Examining Characteristics Of Leaders Who Enact Family-Supportive Superviso Behaviors, Stefanie Mockler

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Over the past several decades, a plethora of research has focused on better understanding how individuals can succeed in the workplace while navigating the complex intersection between work, family, and personal life. Offering flexible working arrangements (FWA), such as flextime and flexplace, is promising for employees who seek to find greater balance. However, supervisor support for use of FWA is critical, as supervisors often have discretion over their enforcement and use, and thus, can create (or inhibit) the development of a family-supportive work environment. Further, preliminary research indicates that expression of family-supportive supervisor behaviors (FSSBs) lend to positive outcomes for …

Teaching While Autistic: Constructions Of Disability, Performativity, And Identity, Alexa Baird Nov 2020

Teaching While Autistic: Constructions Of Disability, Performativity, And Identity, Alexa Baird

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

The structure of organizational contexts and practices tends to be based on the normative assumption of the non-disabled individual as the prototypical state of being human. Therefore, schools, like many institutional sites, act to replicate the normative expectation of ableism and the atypical mind. These parameters impact not only the disabled students that operate both within these educational spaces but also the disabled adults embedded within these arenas professionally. Thus, disabled teachers act as a marginalized group that has historically been largely absent from the discourse on education and critical disability studies. This paper seeks to develop an understanding of …

The survey results demonstrate that the job outlook is most positive for candidates, who …

Dual Disadvantage: An Examination Of Racial Disparities In Victim And Suspect Criminal Justice Treatment, Paige Vaughn Nov 2020

Dual Disadvantage: An Examination Of Racial Disparities In Victim And Suspect Criminal Justice Treatment, Paige Vaughn

Dissertations

During the past several decades, American criminal justice legal systems appear to have been over-punishing Black individuals as perpetrators of crime, and neglecting them as violent crime victims, perpetuating disparities that simultaneously repress and alienate Black citizens. Such complex processes of racial inequality are difficult to capture in studies that focus on single criminal justice stages and limited sets of variables. After presenting a working conceptualization of case processing that can be used across criminal justice systems, the current study uses data from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office, and U.S. Census to assess racial …

Generational Impacts Of 1930s Housing Discrimination And The Imperative Need For The Healthy Start Initiative To Address Structural Racism, Brittney Butler, Michael Outrich, Jessica Roach, Arthur James

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

For nearly three decades, Healthy Start Initiative(HSI) has served communities with high rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes--with the goal to lower them by 50%. Despite a large focus on social determinants of health, HSI has narrowly addressed racism. The effects of legal housing discrimination continue to be felt and have profound implications for pregnancy. To understand the historical context of racism in these communities, we geospatially evaluated the relationship between HSI service areas and Home-Owners Loan Corporation(HOLC) graded maps. Using data from John Snow Inc, National Healthy Start Association, and Mapping Inequality we found that 73 of 100 communities served …
