A Panorama Of Human-Animal Interactions Research: Bibliometric Analysis Of Hai Articles 1982-2018, Jane Kinkus Yatcilla
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
What can we know about human-animal interactions (HAI) research by looking at information about its research articles, such as publication information, text of abstracts or author keywords, or citation patterns? Bibliometric analysis, the quantification of information about published articles, is a tool we can use to gain a perspective of the status of research in a particular field. In this study, information about four decades of HAI research publications was obtained from the multidisciplinary research database Web of Science Core Collection, and analyzed to look for informative patterns about this body of research using Microsoft Excel and VantagePoint text …
Conflict Experienced By Lds Working Mothers, Sarah L. Maxfield
Conflict Experienced By Lds Working Mothers, Sarah L. Maxfield
Marriott Student Review
This article analyzes and attempts to answer the question of what conflict LDS working mothers experience. It does this through a literature review, analyzing the different studies that have been conducted on the subject by looking at their findings, scope, and assessment of the situation. This article summarizes and extrapolates on the current academic literature surrounding working moms, religiosity, conflict, and the role of sanctification as one method of combating it.
Nato's Security Sector Reform In Afghanistan, Sakhi Naimpoor
Nato's Security Sector Reform In Afghanistan, Sakhi Naimpoor
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study aims to understand the security policy of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and investigate whether NATO’s Security Sector Reform (SSR) approach in Afghanistan was a mixed record of success and failure between 2003 and 2014. In terms of NATO’s SSR approach in Afghanistan, what worked, what did not work, and why did certain aspects of SSR fail? The analysis sheds light on the policy-relevant, logistic and doctrinal intricacies associated with NATO’s now almost twenty-year record of involvement in Afghanistan, as well as liberal institutionalism’s policy relevance. This research benefits the security policy community by asking whether NATO's …
Posters, Handkerchiefs And Murals: Visual Gender Separation During The Troubles, Bradley Rohlf
Posters, Handkerchiefs And Murals: Visual Gender Separation During The Troubles, Bradley Rohlf
Irish Communication Review
The Troubles in Northern Ireland provide a complex and intriguing topic for many scholars in various academic disciplines. Their violence, publicity and tragedy are common themes that elicit a plethora of emotional responses throughout the world. However, the very intimate nature of this conflict creates a much more complex system of friends, foes and experiences for those involved. While the very heart of the Irish nationalist movement is founded on liberal and progressive concepts such as socialism and equality, the media associated with it sometimes promote tradition and conservatism, especially regarding gender. This critical study examines a sociopolitical struggle through …
Music Magazines And Gendered Space: The Representation Of Artists On The Covers Of Hot Press And Rolling Stone, Yvonne Kiely
Music Magazines And Gendered Space: The Representation Of Artists On The Covers Of Hot Press And Rolling Stone, Yvonne Kiely
Irish Communication Review
Over the past two decades the commercial music magazine industry has lapsed into a deepening cycle of continuous decline. The demise of the widely popular UK pop music magazine, Smash Hits, in 2006 and the announcement of the final print issue of NME in 2018 has been accompanied by music magazines worldwide reporting year-on-year declines in sales and readership. Meanwhile research has found that portrayals of gender on music magazine covers are largely unrepresentative and unreflective of social heterogeneity – yet the gendered media histories of the industry’s enduring and iconic music magazines remain largely under researched. In order …
A Subaltern Pastor Versus A Dictator President In The #Thisflag Movement In Zimbabwe, Theophilus Nenjerama
A Subaltern Pastor Versus A Dictator President In The #Thisflag Movement In Zimbabwe, Theophilus Nenjerama
Irish Communication Review
Social movements that challenge political infrastructures require substantial themes that resonate with the masses. The #ThisFlag movement was the first massive post-independent social media engendered protest that left an indelible mark on Zimbabwean politics and history. This study deem the movement the ‘cult of Mawarire’ due to the centrality of compelling issues used in galvanizing the masses to action. The cult is a reactionary force navigating sacrosanct issues of identity, politics, and nationalism as inscribed in the flag and the liberation struggle in Zimbabwe. To make meaning of the messages conveyed by Evan Mawarire, the study references to the videos …

Hybrid Media And Political Trials: How Legacy Journalism Perceives Citizen Journalism And Social Media In Political Trials - The Case Of #Jobstownnotguilty, Henry Silke, Maria Rieder, Eugenia Siapera
Irish Communication Review
The relationship between Social Media and Legacy Media has been of much interest to scholars. This paper investigates an interesting, contentious and politicised court case where the heretofore monopoly of professional journalism, court reporting, was challenged by citizen journalists. The case concerned a 2014 sit down protest in Jobstown, Tallaght, a working-class suburb of Dublin, where a sitting Minister Joan Burton TD, was blocked in her car for several hours by local protesters. A number of protesters, many months after the incident, were arrested and charged with false imprisonment.
The Crisis Of Communication In The Information Age: Revisiting C.P. Snow's Two Cultures In The Era Of Fake News, Aaron Green
The Crisis Of Communication In The Information Age: Revisiting C.P. Snow's Two Cultures In The Era Of Fake News, Aaron Green
Irish Communication Review
The purpose of this paper is to revisit C.P. Snow’s “Two Cultures” lecture in light of the cultural dominance of information technology. The crisis of communication in the information age, whether in fake news, political polarisation or science denial, has come about because both scientific and literary cultures, in seeking a world without entropy, have inadvertently stumbled upon a world without meaning. In order to explain how this has happened, the paper first explores Snow's challenge: to describe the second law of thermodynamics. The paper then provides a description of entropy that is neutral with regard to thermodynamics and information, …

Critical Media, Information, And Digital Literacy: Increasing Understanding Of Machine Learning Through An Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Course, Barbara R. Burke, Elena Machkasova
Irish Communication Review
Widespread use of Artificial Intelligence in all areas of today’s society creates a unique problem: algorithms used in decision-making are generally not understandable to those without a background in data science. Thus, those who use out-of-the-box Machine Learning (ML) approaches in their work and those affected by these approaches are often not in a position to analyze their outcomes and applicability.
Our paper describes and evaluates our undergraduate course at the University of Minnesota Morris, which fosters understanding of the main ideas behind ML. With Communication, Media & Rhetoric and Computer Science faculty expertise, students from a variety of majors, …

Onboarding Transfer Students At The University Of San Diego, Andrea Garcia
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
In this study, I explored the experiences and needs of transfer students at the University of San Diego (USD) through assessment analysis, the implementation and observations of Spring orientation, and student leader surveys. My positionality as a graduate assistant for New Student Onboarding allowed me to implement Spring orientation programming, analyze postorientation assessment data, and survey transfer student leaders about their experiences. This study provided me a better understanding of how we as a department and an institution as a whole can improve how we onboard our transfer students and further support them throughout their undergraduate career. While cultivating a …

Assessing The Environmental Impacts Of Urbanization In Siddharthanagar, Nepal, Bishal Raj Khanal
Economics ETDs
Rapid and haphazard infrastructural expansion often contributes to large negative externalities in cities. Environmental problems like air pollution and degradation of quality-of-life elements in an urban settlement are attributed to urban sprawl. Evidence based planning tools need to be developed which can help manage the rapid urbanization that is taking place in the developing world. In this context, we examine the relationship between health outcomes and the different spatial- temporal aspects of an urban-built environment in Siddharthanagar Metropolitan City which is a major settlement in southwestern Nepal. We attempt to identify the aspects of built environment which are closely associated …

Hoop Dreams: An Empirical Analysis Of The Gender Wage Gap In Professional Basketball, Hailey Dicicco
Hoop Dreams: An Empirical Analysis Of The Gender Wage Gap In Professional Basketball, Hailey Dicicco
Business and Economics Summer Fellows
The gender wage gap is a very prominent point of discussion in the professional world, but in the sports world, it has taken the spotlight in recent years. One sport that has seen discussion and debate over salary differences is the National Basketball Association and Women’s National Basketball Association. In 2018, the average salary in the NBA was 6.4 million dollars, while the average salary in the WNBA was 71,635 dollars. A reason why these salaries are so differently is due to the amount of revenue that each league brings in. The NBA brings in roughly 7.4 billion dollars a …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: July 24, 2020, Eric Thompson
Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The LEI-N rose by 1.72% during June of 2020. The June increase followed sharp declines in March and April. The June result indicates that the Nebraska economy will grow over the next 6 months, continuing the steady recovery from large economic losses in March and April. All six components of the leading indicator improved during June. The slow rebound in airline passenger enplanements continued, and manufacturing hours-worked increased. There also was a slight drop in initial claims for unemployment insurance and a drop in the value of the U.S. dollar in June. A lower U.S. dollar improves competitive conditions for …

The Comparison Between Maximum Weighted And Trimmed Likelihood Estimator Of The Simple Circular Regression Model, Ehab A. Mahmood, Habshah Midi, Abdul Ghapor Hussin
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) was used to estimate unknown parameters of the simple circular regression model. However, it is very sensitive to outliers in data set. A robust method to estimate model parameters is proposed.
Bayesian Estimation Of The Parameters Of Discrete Weibull Type (I) Distribution, Samir Kamel Ashour, Mohamed Salem Abdelwahab Muiftah
Bayesian Estimation Of The Parameters Of Discrete Weibull Type (I) Distribution, Samir Kamel Ashour, Mohamed Salem Abdelwahab Muiftah
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Bayesian estimation of the continuous Weibull distribution parameters was studied by Ahmad and Ahmad (2013) under the assumption of knowing the shape parameter. Bayesian estimates are considered here of the parameters of the discrete Weibull Type I [DW(I)] distribution and are obtained under two different assumptions: when the shape parameter is known, and when both parameters are independent random variables. A Mathcad program is performed to simulate data from the DW(I) distribution considering different values of the parameters and different sample sizes, and to obtain Bayesian parameter estimates. The resulted estimates are compared to the ML and proportion estimates obtained …

Strategies Used By Military Spouse Small Businesses During A Military Relocation, Sandra D. Heredia, Patricia Fusch
The Qualitative Report
There are over 615,000 women military spouses and 1,786 known military spouse business owners who relocate every 2 to 3 years to follow their active duty spouse. The research problem addressed was the lack of strategies military spouse small business owners used to sustain their business during a mandatory military relocation. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies 5 women military spouse small business owners, located at military installations in the Midlands and Pee Dee regions of South Carolina, used to sustain their businesses during a relocation. The sampling method used was census sampling. The …

The Action Structure Of Recruitment Calls And Its Analytic Implications: The Case Of Disfluencies, Bo Hee Min
The Action Structure Of Recruitment Calls And Its Analytic Implications: The Case Of Disfluencies, Bo Hee Min
Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
We describe interviewers’ actions in phone calls recruiting sample members. We illustrate (1) analytic challenges of studying how interviewers affect participation and (2) actions that undergird the variables in our models. We examine the impact of the interviewer’s disfluencies on whether a sample member accepts or declines the request for an interview as a case study. Disfluencies are potentially important if they communicate the competence or humanity of the interviewer to the sample member in a way that affects the decision to participate. Using the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, we find that although as they begin, calls that become declinations are …

The Impact Of Sexual Initiation And Motivation On Couples' Sexual Frequency, Bethany A. Jorgensen
Family Perspectives
For couples, motivations for sexual intimacy, initiation attempts at sexual intercourse, and the desired frequency of sexual intercourse can impact the relational outcomes of a relationship. Emotional intimacy, sexual satisfaction, and relationship satisfaction are closely intertwined for couples and can play a significant role in the dynamics of their relationship. This literature review first discusses sexual initiation and its impact on sexual frequency and then the connection of motivation on the emotional climate of sexual intimacy and couples’ sexual frequency.

The Impact Of Spending Time Alone On Emerging Adults' Mental Well-Being, Lisa Prescott Dixon
Family Perspectives
Purposefully spending time alone with the intention of self-care can lead to mental health benefits for emerging adults. However, when the motivation for spending time alone is rooted in the desire to be socially avoidant, emerging adults may find themselves becoming isolated and may experience increased levels of anxiety and/or depression. Effective solitude excludes any other individuals and the use of social media. As emerging adults purposefully spend time alone, they are creating opportunities for self-reflection that may then lead to the strengthened development of emotional regulation skills. The ability to emotionally regulate provides the necessary tools to cope with …
