A 20-Year Ecotone Study Of Pacific Northwest Mountain Forest Vulnerability To Changing Snow Conditions, Todd R. Lookingbill, Jack Dupuy, Ellery Jacobs University Of Richmond, Matteo Gonzalez, Tihomir S. Kostadinov

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

Background: Global climate change is expected to significantly alter growing conditions along mountain gradients. Landscape ecological patterns are likely to shift significantly as species attempt to adapt to these changes. We evaluated the extent to which spatial (elevation and canopy cover) and temporal (decadal trend and El Niño–Southern Oscillation/Pacific Decadal Oscillation) factors impact seasonal snowmelt and forest community dynamics in the Western Hemlock–True Fir ecotone region of the Oregon Western Cascades, USA. (2) Methods: Tsuga heterophylla and Abies amabilis seedling locations were mapped three times over 20 years (2002–2022) on five sample transects strategically placed to cross the ecotone. Additionally, …

Changes To Rural Migration In The Covid-19 Pandemic☆, Julia K. Petersen, Richelle Winkler, Miranda H. Mockrin Feb 2024

Changes To Rural Migration In The Covid-19 Pandemic☆, Julia K. Petersen, Richelle Winkler, Miranda H. Mockrin

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 2

Media stories highlighted accounts of migration away from city centers towards more rural destinations during the COVID-19 pandemic, but systematic research about how the pandemic changed migration in more rural destinations is only starting to emerge. This paper relies on U.S. Postal Service change-of-address data to describe whether and how established domestic migration systems changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on differences across the rural–urban gradient and by outdoor recreation resources. We find little evidence of massive urban exodus. We do find that out-migration from rural counties declined post-pandemic onset and has stayed low in the 3 years since, stemming …

Teachers’ Raciolinguistic Ideologies In The Shl Classroom: Considerations For Shl Teacher Development, Valeria Ochoa, Sergio Loza

11th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language

Abstract: As Latinx enrollment in US university Spanish-language courses continues to rise (Beaudrie & Marrero-Rivera, forthcoming), numerous studies detail the transformative potential of SHL pedagogy for US Latinxs as an educational experience (e.g., Holguín Mendoza, 2018; Leeman, 2005). Recent progress has been driven by the study of language ideologies as a critical area of inquiry to reckon with the disparities that US Latinxs face within SHL education (Loza & Beaudrie, 2022). Such disparities are predicated on dominant raciolinguistic ideologies that often impose idealized language varieties and identities on Latinx youth (Barillas Chón, 2022). Although critical materials, curriculum, and pedagogical approaches …

Unveiling Critical Language Awareness Through Tiktok: Fostering Community, Dialogue And Student Perspectives In The Spanish Heritage Language Classroom, Sarah Henderson

11th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language

“What are the students saying?” examines students’ reactions towards critical language awareness-laden media presented in the Spanish as a heritage language (SHL) classroom. Critical language awareness (CLA) emphasizes how “language practices are invested with power relations and ideological processes which people are often unaware of” (Fairclough, 1992, p.7). In the classroom, CLA manifests in ways that “helps students understand how language prejudice is intertwined with broader social hierarchies and power relations. Further, it seeks to promote students’ development of critical resources for resisting and challenging those hierarchies” (Leeman 2018, p. 348). The present classroom-based study furthers CLA research by advancing …

Evaluating Safety, Permanency, And Well-Being Outcomes For Adolescents In Family Home Program Care, Tami C. Soper

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Policy decision makers have restricted the use of residential behavioral health services for youth involved in child welfare and juvenile justice systems, threatening their existence. Family Home Program (FHP), an evidence-based residential model, is an example of a program at risk of extinction because of negative characterization. While in-home, community-based, and foster care levels of child welfare services are assessed for conformity with federal outcomes using the federal Child and Family Services Review (CFSR), residential care does not receive this review. The purpose of this study was to bridge the evaluation gap between in-home and community-based child welfare programs and …

Midwest Hydrogen Center Of Excellence Comments To The Proposed Ira Rulemaking For Irs Rule 45v, Andrew R. Thomas Feb 2024

Midwest Hydrogen Center Of Excellence Comments To The Proposed Ira Rulemaking For Irs Rule 45v, Andrew R. Thomas

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The Midwest Hydrogen Center of Excellence submitted comments in support of efforts to draft language defining what forms of clean hydrogen production will be eligible for tax credits under IRS Section 45V. The need to transition our energy economy to clean hydrogen is urgent. If we rely primarily upon electrolysis and other renewable sources for hydrogen, it will take too long to develop. Accordingly, the 45V tax credit rules should be written to encourage clean hydrogen generation from steam methane reformation. Tax credits for generation of clean hydrogen from renewable natural gas, in particular, should phase in Scope 3 emission …

Considerations For The Implementation Of A Specialized Mental Health Probation Caseload, Ross Becker Feb 2024

Considerations For The Implementation Of A Specialized Mental Health Probation Caseload, Ross Becker

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership

The field of community corrections has undergone a transformation. While holding probationers accountable is still the expectation, agencies have begun to embrace evidence-based interventions to guide client change instead of a more punitive approach. The creation of specialized mental health probation caseloads is a natural evolution of supervision. The purpose of a specialized mental health caseload is to create a pathway for the ethical supervision of clients experiencing serious and persistent mental illness. Administrators who are committed to compassionate service will be most impactful when they consider the many potential ethical implications for both the client and the probation practitioner …

These devices are used to help with documenting evidence, transparency, and training for law enforcement. Prior to implementing body worn cameras, law enforcement agency need to research body worn cameras, protocols, integration, and challenges that could be faced for the organization and their staff. Protocols need to set in place by administration like retrieval process, storage of data, reviewing of videos, and policy development to assist with the seamless integration of body worn cameras. Ethical considerations must be reviewed to …

Reimagining The Criminal Justice Response To Sexual Assault, Jacob Swanson Feb 2024

Reimagining The Criminal Justice Response To Sexual Assault, Jacob Swanson

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership

After a crime is reported, several different stakeholders work to take the case from a police report to a conviction. In sexual assault cases, these stakeholders may consist of police officers, medical professionals, advocates, forensic scientists, prosecutors, and others. Yet, this process cannot begin until a victim reports their crime to law enforcement. Sexual assault cases are widely underreported and for a variety of reasons. Data from the 2015-2019 National Crime Victimization Survey suggests that only about one-third of sexual assaults are reported to police, while only about 3% lead to a felony conviction (RAINN, n.d.).

The criminal justice community …

This paper reports on how one university attempts to instruct all incoming students on information literacy fundamentals using an asynchronous test supported by a suite of related materials. The paper explores how students interpret the efficacy of this model as they move further along in their academic career. Using a mixed-methods approach, with the majority of data being obtained through focus groups, the researchers (librarians employed in the library through which the test is developed), reflect on the advantages and disadvantages to this model, and suggest improvements to further ensure student engagement with this type of information literacy instruction and …

“You Are Not The Same Person You Were:” On Diagnosis Seeking During A Liminal Period And Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Kaylee A. Appleton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

“You are the healthiest looking sick person I’ve ever met”

(Daphne, 62)

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is one of many chronic illnesses considered to be “invisible.” Once the onset of symptoms occurs, the illness can drastically change the dynamic of an individual's life in ways that may not be noticeable to others, even before a chronic illness diagnosis. I discuss how these individuals experience the liminal period of developing symptoms and seeking a diagnosis. Furthermore, I discuss vignettes that exemplifies the occurrence of a liminal state while looking at the current for-profit set-up of healthcare in the United States. Utilizing …
