Eastern Montana Data Growth: 2019 Initiative To Increase Data Collection, Kara Grau, Megan Schultz Jul 2020

Eastern Montana Data Growth: 2019 Initiative To Increase Data Collection, Kara Grau, Megan Schultz

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

The purpose of this project is to provide Eastern Montana, and in turn, the entire state, with more robust sample sizes of the nonresident data collected year-round by ITRR. Increased sample size will allow for data specific to Eastern Montana regions, counties, towns, and sites to be more representative, and therefore, more beneficial in understanding the state of nonresident travel in that area. Additional data was collected by restructuring and adding additional nonresident surveying in the Eastern Montana regions. Included in this report is a summary of data collected from Eastern Montana travelers in comparison with the full data set.

Book Review Of The Orientalizing And Lucanian Tombs From Loc. De Santis I At Pontecagnano, By Margit Von Mehren, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

Von Mehren’s impressive volume provides one means of gauging the progress that has been made in studies of ancient cemeteries in the region surrounding the Gulf of Naples. The author has undertaken the daunting task of publishing funerary data that had been recovered decades earlier, during a period when physical anthropology in Italy remained a research area largely separated from mainstream classical archaeology. The information available to von Mehren had been collected during a four month “rescue project” in 1967–1968 at the Località De Santis I, after which the field notes and artifacts were held in storage. The area excavated …

Unpacking Burt’S Constraint Measure, Martin G. Everett, Stephen P. Borgatti Jul 2020

Unpacking Burt’S Constraint Measure, Martin G. Everett, Stephen P. Borgatti

Management Faculty Publications

Burt (1992) proposed two principal measures of structural holes, effective size and constraint. However, the formulas describing the measures are somewhat opaque and have led to a certain amount of confusion. Borgatti (1997) showed that, for binary data, the effective size formula could be written very simply as degree (ego network size) minus average degree of alters within the ego network. The present paper presents an analogous reformulation of the constraint measure. We also derive minima and maxima for constraint, showing that, for small ego networks, constraint can be larger than one, and for larger ego networks, constraint cannot get …

Academic Library Support Of Social Entrepreneurship Programs, Anthony L. Paganelli Jul 2020

Academic Library Support Of Social Entrepreneurship Programs, Anthony L. Paganelli

Dissertations

The concept of social entrepreneurship was introduced into higher education in the late 1980s. Since then, social entrepreneurship programs have increased at higher educational institutions nationally and globally. This study examines how academic libraries support the growing trend of social entrepreneurship programs and the perceptions of academic library administrators and faculty librarians toward social entrepreneurship programs. Based on the review of literature, little information exists regarding the academic library support of social entrepreneurship programs. This study involved a survey instrument distributed to academic library administrators and faculty librarians from social entrepreneurship program institutions and a follow-up interview. The analysis provided …

Psychometric Properties Of The College Athlete Psychological Screening Tool: Validation Of The Depression And Anxiety Subscales, Joseph C. Case

Dissertations

The aim of the present study was to gain a better understanding of the descriptive psychometric properties of the College Athlete Psychological Screening (CAPS) measure. The CAPS is a newly developed assessment screening measure designed to assess 14 common problem areas for college athletes. For the present investigation, 395 participants completed the 108-item CAPS measure. To establish criterion validity, participants also completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). The present study had three research questions. Question one discussed the descriptive psychodynamic properties (Cronbach’s alpha, means, and standard deviations) of the 14 CAPS subscales. Question two …

The Relationship Between Organizational Trauma-Informed Care And Secondary Trauma Symptoms In Staff Members Of Kentucky Domestic Violence Programs, Mary Ellen Foley Jul 2020

The Relationship Between Organizational Trauma-Informed Care And Secondary Trauma Symptoms In Staff Members Of Kentucky Domestic Violence Programs, Mary Ellen Foley

Dissertations

This study evaluated secondary traumatic stress (STS) levels in 89 employees from Kentucky’s 15 regional domestic crisis programs to determine whether certain demographic variables predicted STS levels (as measured by the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale©) and whether employee perception of organizational trauma-informed care practices (as measured by the Ticometer©) reduced levels of STS. Results of a multiple regression analysis indicated that personal trauma history severity did significantly impact STS levels. In this way, the current study rejected the null hypothesis. Results also indicated that the more the employee perceived the organization to adopt and execute trauma-informed care practices, the lower …

Impact Of Covid-19 On Psychology Training In Egypt, Jamie E. Mendoza, Yasmine Saleh Jul 2020

Impact Of Covid-19 On Psychology Training In Egypt, Jamie E. Mendoza, Yasmine Saleh

Faculty Journal Articles

In the immediate phase of the rapid shift, our role as supervisors evolved from pre-planned educators to crisis managers and mentors. While the shift was overwhelming, we found comfort through consultation and collaboration with each other to make the most of an unparalleled situation. Our interactions role-modelled effective partnership and joint decision-making. We prepared several of our classes together, and when needed, brought all of the interns together so that our message and approach would be unified. Our discussions shifted from an individual mentality to a collective one. This gave the interns an opportunity to see their supervisors discussing ethical, …

Impacts Of Green Infrastructure On Flood Risk Perceptions In Hong Kong, Seung Kyum Kim, Paul Joose, Mia M. Bennett, Terry Van Gevelt Jul 2020

Impacts Of Green Infrastructure On Flood Risk Perceptions In Hong Kong, Seung Kyum Kim, Paul Joose, Mia M. Bennett, Terry Van Gevelt

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

To better address climate unpredictability, green infrastructure is increasingly deployed alongside gray infrastructure as an alternative strategy for flood risk mitigation. Previous research has not clearly distinguished the flood-mitigation effects of green infrastructure at the local scale due to its complex range of functions including socioeconomic benefits, ecosystem services, and amenity value. Using data on 3768 housing sales from 2009 to 2019 in Hong Kong, we employ a difference-in-differences framework to examine the effect of green infrastructure on perceptions of flood risk mitigation, with housing prices as a proxy for risk perception. We find a positive effect of green infrastructure …

Essays On Multivariate Stochastic Volatility Models, Han Chen Jul 2020

Essays On Multivariate Stochastic Volatility Models, Han Chen

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In this dissertation, I have made several contributions to the literature on the multivariate stochastic volatility model. First, I have considered a new multivariate stochastic volatility (MSV) model based on a recently proposed novel parameterization of the correlation matrix. This modeling design is a generalization of Fisher's z-transformation to the high-dimensional case. It is fully flexible as the validity of the resulting correlation matrix is guaranteed automatically. It allows me to completely separate the driving factors of volatilities and correlations. To conduct an econometric analysis of the proposed model, I develop a new Bayesian method that relies on the Markov …

Adorno’S Critique Of The New Right-Wing Extremism: How (Not) To Face The Past, Present, And Future, Harry F. Dahms Jul 2020

Adorno’S Critique Of The New Right-Wing Extremism: How (Not) To Face The Past, Present, And Future, Harry F. Dahms

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This paper serves three purposes relating to a lecture Adorno gave in 1967 on “the new right-wing extremism” that was on the rise then in West Germany; in 2019, the lecture was published in print for the first time in German, to wide acclaim, followed by an English translation that appeared in 2020. First, it is important to situate the lecture in its historical and political context, and to relate it to Adorno’s status as a critical theorist in West Germany. Secondly, Adorno’s diagnosis of the new right-wing extremism (and related forms of populism) and his conclusions about how to …

Creating North Carolina Populism, 1900–1960: Part 2: The Progressive Era Legacy, 1930–1960, James L. Hunt

Articles

Between 1900 and 1930, North Carolina’s first generation of professional historians constructed scholarly accounts of Tar Heel Populism. These pioneers offered a version of the recent past that supported white supremacy and the current Progressive Era political leadership. They agreed Populism’s destruction had been desirable. University-based historians opposed the Populist Party’s support for significant changes to tax policy, broad-based democracy, and radical forms of corporate regulation, especially of railroads, banks, and monopolies. The key figures included J. G. de Roulhac Hamilton, Simeon A. DeLapp, Florence E. Smith, and John D. Hicks. Most earned Ph.D. degrees in history from northern universities, …

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

This paper examines the impact of institutional quality (government effectiveness index, voice and accountability index, and political stability) and economic variables (Gross Domestic Product [GDP], inflation, trade openness, and gross fixed capital formation) on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows in ASEAN 2012–2016 by using panel data analysis. The obtained results indicate that economics variables have a greater impact on FDI than political stability indicator. Our findings also suggest that insignificant effect of democracy and institutional quality indicator on FDI caused by the high level of corruption in ASEAN which maybe has a crowding out effect to level of democracy and …

New Flesh Cinema: Japanese Cyberpunk-Body Horror And Cinema As Catharsis In The Age Of Technology, Sarah Henry Jul 2020

New Flesh Cinema: Japanese Cyberpunk-Body Horror And Cinema As Catharsis In The Age Of Technology, Sarah Henry

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a critical analysis of a specific group of films that combine the subgenres of cyberpunk and body horror which I call New Flesh Cinema. Films of this subgenre counter fears and anxieties of technological advancements by re-imagining the rise of technology and its societal effects as a transitional process through the illustration of literal and visceral depictions of the necessary alterations people will have to undergo in order to transition successfully into the new world. To contradict apocalyptic fears of advancing technology, these films offer a vision of a “New Flesh.” I argue the films share three …

Effect Of The Prospect Of Transport On Captive Tiger Behavior And Fecal Cortisol In Naïve And Experienced Tigers, Callan Lichtenwalter

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With close to 5,000 captive tigers in the United States, it is vital to ensure that these tigers are receiving adequate welfare whether they are in an accredited facility, or privately owned. The goal of this study was to assess whether captive tigers at a rescue facility with experience being transported outside of the facility would respond differently to the presentation of their transport vehicle than their naïve counterparts who had only been transported within the facility. The behavior of 5 naïve and 7 experienced tigers (n = 12) located at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs, Arkansas was …

The Use Of Speech-Generating Devices For Preschoolers With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jessica Miller Jul 2020

After providing an overview of ASD, evidence-based practices (EBP), and AAC types and a brief history, this review evaluates studies that collected data on vocalizations in SGD-users, including both those that targeted vocalizations as a dependent variable and those that measured vocalizations as a collateral effect without directly targeting it. The goal of this review is to evaluate whether SGD use may …

Hpv Vaccination In Females: The Role Of Primary Health Care And Primary Health Care Providers, Brooke Bouza Jul 2020

Hpv Vaccination In Females: The Role Of Primary Health Care And Primary Health Care Providers, Brooke Bouza

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Two reasons for subpar coverage of the Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine are missed clinical opportunities and nonacceptance of the vaccine upon recommendation from a medical provider. The purpose of study one was to examine factors associated with access and adherence to physician’s recommendations in association with HPV vaccine uptake. Data were obtained from National Health Interview Survey (2017). Variables theoretically related to clinical opportunities and adherence to physician’s recommendations were examined in association with HPV vaccine uptake. Univariate logistic regressions were run to determine the associations between the aforementioned variables and uptake of the HPV vaccine. Multinomial logistic regressions were …

Crafting A Closure And The Art Of Deconstruction: Lessons Learned From The Oregon College Of Art And Craft Library’S Final Days, Elsa Loftis, Dan Kelley

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

After the disheartening news of a full closure of the Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2019, the librarian and partners had the unpleasant task of dismantling and distributing the library’s unique collection. This article outlines that process in the context of other library closures and offers ideas for best practices and project management procedures for other libraries to consider if facing such a situation. The article is also a tribute to the unique collection and space that needed to be disassembled and how the collection lives on to make contributions at other institutions.

Investigating Mentor Commitment In Youth Mentoring Relationships: The Role Of Perceived Program Practices, Alison L. Drew, Thomas E. Keller, Renee Spencer, Carla Herrera

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Highly committed mentors may be less likely to end their mentoring relationships with their mentees. Theory suggests commitment is predicted by relationship satisfaction, investment, and perceptions of available alternatives. Mentoring program practices may influence commitment, but little research has investigated potential mechanisms. Using data from 537 mentors representing 55 mentoring programs, this study examined a theoretical path model in which mentor perceptions of program practices, specifically setting expectations, prematch mentor training, and matching based on mentor preferences, predict mentor satisfaction, investment, perceptions of available alternatives, and ultimately, relationship commitment. As expected, commitment was associated positively with satisfaction and investment and …
