Becoming Liberated In The Process Of Researching And Writing About Liberation: A Scholarly Reflection Of A Healing Process In A Doctoral Program, Falon N. Thacker
Georgia Journal of College Student Affairs
This article chronicles the process of researching and writing a dissertation about liberation and how it connects to my own experiences of liberation. Qualitative research involves a more personal connection between the researcher and the study (Hays & Singh, 2012) which allows for a more in depth understanding of the experiences of the participants and the researcher. This article provides a reflection of my journey that began in early childhood and through the doctoral process, connecting those experiences to the research process utilizing Pillow’s (2003) four reflexive strategies. Reflecting on the method, theory, and findings, the researcher makes connections with …

How You Can Work To Increase The Presence And Improve The Experience Of Black, Latinx, And Native American People In The Economics Profession, Amanda Bayer, G. A. Hoover, E. Washington
Economics Faculty Works
Recently in economics there has been discussion of how to increase diversity in the profession and how to improve the work life of diverse peoples. We conducted surveys and interviews with Black, Latinx and Native American people. These groups have long been underrepresented in the economics profession. Participants were at various stages along the economics career trajectory, or on the trajectory no longer, and used their lived experience to reflect on what helps and hurts underrepresented minorities in economics. We heard a few consistent themes: bias, hostile climate, and the lack of information and good mentoring among them. Respondents' insights …

Center for Policy Research
We provide new evidence on the effect of adolescent health behaviors/outcomes (obesity, depression, smoking, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)) on schooling attainment using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. We take two different approaches to deal with omitted variable bias and reverse causality. Our first approach attends to the issue of reverse causality by using health polygenic scores (PGSs) as proxies for actual adolescent health. Second, we estimate the effect of adolescent health using sibling fixed-effects models that control for unmeasured genetic and family factors shared by siblings. We use the PGSs as additional controls in …
Objective Rationality Foundations For (Dynamic) Alpha-Meu, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Yves Le Yaouanq
Objective Rationality Foundations For (Dynamic) Alpha-Meu, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Yves Le Yaouanq
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We show how incorporating Gilboa, Maccheroni, Marinacci, and Schmeidler’s (2010) notion of objective rationality into the α-MEU model of choice under ambiguity can overcome several challenges faced by the baseline model without objective rationality. The decision-maker (DM) has a subjectively rational preference ≿^, which captures the complete ranking overacts the DM expresses when forced to make a choice; in addition, we endow the DM with a (possibly incomplete) objectively rational preference ≿*, which captures the rankings the DM deems uncontroversial. Under the objectively founded α-MEU model, ≿^ has an α-MEU representation and ≿*has a unanimity representation à la Bewley (2002), …

Effects Of Inter-Male Status Challenge And Psychopathic Traits On Sexual Aggression, Amy M. Hoffmann
Effects Of Inter-Male Status Challenge And Psychopathic Traits On Sexual Aggression, Amy M. Hoffmann
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sexual aggression (SA) is a serious social problem that has been linked to a variety of negative physical and mental health outcomes for survivors and produces significant monetary costs to society. In the past five decades, a wealth of research has improved our understanding of the individual and sociocultural factors that contribute to SA perpetration; however, epistemological differences in theoretical approaches to the subject (i.e., evolutionary, feminist) have resulted in gaps in the empirical literature. Informed by both feminist and evolutionary perspectives, this study attempts to examine the ways in which same-gender interpersonal interactions and individual psychopathology interact to produce …

An Exploration Of Atypical Recovery From Pediatric Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Mtbi), Kathryn Ann Ritchie
An Exploration Of Atypical Recovery From Pediatric Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Mtbi), Kathryn Ann Ritchie
Dissertations (1934 -)
Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a significant public health concern, particularly for children and adolescents. Existing research suggests that pre-injury and injury-related factors influence recovery. The current study simultaneously considered variables relevant to recovery from pediatric mTBI, including pre-injury diagnoses, symptom burden, neuropsychological and emotional functioning, performance validity, and medical service utilization in an archival sample of children referred to a multidisciplinary concussion clinic. Consistent with a broad literature, female sex and initial symptom burden predicted referral for neuropsychological evaluation. Initial symptom burden also predicted neuropsychological performance and service utilization. A meaningful proportion of the sample reported clinically significant …

Big Data, Spatial Optimization, And Planning, Kai Cao, Wenwen Li, Richard Church
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Spatial optimization represents a set of powerful spatial analysis techniques that can be used to identify optimal solution(s) and even generate a large number of competitive alternatives. The formulation of such problems involves maximizing or minimizing one or more objectives while satisfying a number of constraints. Solution techniques range from exact models solved with such approaches as linear programming and integer programming, or heuristic algorithms, i.e. Tabu Search, Simulated Annealing, and Genetic Algorithms. Spatial optimization techniques have been utilized in numerous planning applications, such as location-allocation modeling/site selection, land use planning, school districting, regionalization, routing, and urban design. These methods …

Redefining The Meanings Of Daily-Occupations And Life Quality Amongst Mothers Living With Their Autistic Children, Eko Sumaryanto, Gandes Mutiara Aziz
Redefining The Meanings Of Daily-Occupations And Life Quality Amongst Mothers Living With Their Autistic Children, Eko Sumaryanto, Gandes Mutiara Aziz
International Programs
Raising children with autism is very challenging for mothers due to changes on how occupational performance and occupational roles are performed. This circumstance demands these mothers to redefine the meaning of doing occupations and how they perceive their well-being in general. This study empirically investigates how mothers redefine the meaning of daily activities and self-report their well-being. The study employs in-depth interviews and formulates specific themes of findings. The study uses the phenomenology approach to investigate the dynamics of meanings experienced by the respondents and how they construct the new version of well-being from raising the autistic children.

Digital Mapping Of Togo’S Soil Fertility: Savannah Region, Aminou Saibou
International Programs
A soil assessment was carried out in the savannah region of Togo in 2018, aiming at drawing the digital map of Togo’s soil fertility and making fertilizer recommendations. Soil samples were taken from geo-referenced GPS points and were analyzed for parameters such as water pH, Organic matter, available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium. Thematic maps have been drawn using an ArcGIS package. The results showed that the soils of the Savannah region in Togo are mainly (84%) not very acidic (pH = 5.5 to 6.5), overall poor to very poor (84%) in organic matter (<2% OM), essentially poor to very poor (86%) in available phosphorus (<15 mg/kg of soil) and mostly very poor (87%) in exchangeable potassium (<90 mg / kg of soil). These results allowed the agricultural research institute of Togo to make fertilizer use recommendations and to develop, in partnership with Morocco, a digital platform (fertitogo.tg ) for decision making in crop fertilization.

How To Protect Media From Soft Censorship In Montenegro, Ana Nenezić
How To Protect Media From Soft Censorship In Montenegro, Ana Nenezić
International Programs
Free and independent media are the basis of every democratic society. In order for media to fulfil their watchdog role, they need to be politically and economically independent in their work, operate under clearly prescribed legal standards and be free from inadequate external political influence. In this way the competition would define the market, and not the political influence. Freedom of expression and media freedoms are under constant political pressure in Montenegro resulting in deep polarization of media environment. The non-transparent and non-competitive state distribution of public funds disrupts the media market in Montenegro, and additionally weakens the economic independence …

The Culture Code: The Secrets Of Highly Successful Groups (Book Review), Lucero A. Aradillas
Georgia Journal of College Student Affairs
In the book The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups, Daniel Coyle discusses how people work together as part of a group that achieves excellent results. As opposed to this being a book on how individuals lead, the author focuses on how people interact successfully and productively with each other; thereby, giving leaders three skills that can help hone successful teams. His research identified three skills that propel effective teamwork: Build Safety, Share Vulnerability, and Establish Purpose. This book review will briefly describe these skills and how the book provides a solid base for leaders seeking to …
Postdisaster Futures: Hopeful Pessimism, Imperial Ruination, And La Futura Cuir, Yarimar Bonilla
Postdisaster Futures: Hopeful Pessimism, Imperial Ruination, And La Futura Cuir, Yarimar Bonilla
Publications and Research
This essay discusses how Puerto Ricans are imagining and building new futures out of a political context of material and affective ruin that is not guided by the promise of a modernist future or the palliative anticipation of a sovereignty to come. It examines how the politics of ruination might lead to a “hopeful pessimism” that could break with the nostalgic immobility of the arrested present. It concludes by exploring the possibilities of an emerging cuir (queer) futurity that breaks with raced and gendered scripts of postcolonial sovereignty to envision a new postdisaster future.

Trust, Reciprocity, And Social History: New Pathways Of Learning When Max U (Own Reward) Fails Decisively, Vernon L. Smith
ESI Working Papers
"This evaluation begins with the BDM protocol—itself a methodological contribution—and the experimental findings. The question of the replicability and robustness of these unexpected results is addressed next in a summary of two subsequent experimental papers. We follow with a discussion of two attempts to explain qua understand the BDM findings; both, however, have methological deficiencies—Reciprocity and Social Preference explanations. Finally, we offer a brief on Adam Smith’s (1759; 1853; hereafter in the text, Sentiments) model of human sociability, based on strictly self-interested actors, that culminates in propositions that (1) account for trust game choices, and (2) predict action in new …
The Impact Of Record Low Interest Rates In Brazilian Capital Markets, Allan F. Brenner
The Impact Of Record Low Interest Rates In Brazilian Capital Markets, Allan F. Brenner
Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics
At a time in which most countries have been experiencing low to negative interest rates, Brazil is just now joining the global trend. The Selic rate (equivalent to the Fed Funds Rate) is the key tool for monitoring monetary policy by the Brazilian Central Bank (BCB). With recent cuts, the Selic has landed in 4.25%, a rate never experienced before in the Brazilian economy (Brazilian Central Bank, n.d.). This paper seeks to analyze the impact of record low interest rates in the Brazilian capital markets. The paper approaches the impacts of low interest rates from the perspective of individual investors …
The U.S Dollar And Canada Dollar Exchange Rate, Emily Iehl
The U.S Dollar And Canada Dollar Exchange Rate, Emily Iehl
Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics
This paper explores the U.S and Canada Dollar monthly exchange rates from 1/1/1986 to 9/1/2019. The model shows that the U.S Dollar and Canada Dollar monthly exchange rate at time can be estimated using the Canada three month interest rate, U.S inflation rate, the price of oil, and U.S net exports. Ferraro, Rogoff, and Rossi (2011) explore the idea of forecasting exchange rates between Canada solely based on oil prices. Batten and Thornton (1985 p.22-23) discuss theory on inflation and interest rates determining currency exchanges. This paper will show that including all of these variables can be helpful in explaining …

Justice For All? An In-Depth Look At Sexual Assault Kit Testing In The Carolinas, Jessalynn C. King
Justice For All? An In-Depth Look At Sexual Assault Kit Testing In The Carolinas, Jessalynn C. King
Senior Theses
Within the last few decades, technological advancements and an improved understanding of biological materials have led to an increase in evidence that can be submitted for forensic testing in criminal justice investigations. In a sexual assault investigation, a sexual assault kit (SAK) is often collected and contains the evidence found on the victim’s or suspect’s person. While the true total is unknown, it is estimated that several hundred thousand untested SAKs remain in the custody of law enforcement and forensic crime laboratories across the United States. Whether these SAKs were neglected due to law enforcement bias, the prioritization of other …
Faculty Perceptions Of Students' Il Learning In First-Year Writing, Catherine Baird, Tiffany Soares
Faculty Perceptions Of Students' Il Learning In First-Year Writing, Catherine Baird, Tiffany Soares
Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works
The study investigates the perceptions of first-year writing faculty of how their students develop information literacy (IL). The authors conducted 16 semi-structured interviews and analyzed them using a qualitative inductive coding method. The study contributes a close and nuanced understanding of faculty perceptions of IL learning to a literature with few recent qualitative studies. Faculty identify what they see as enablers and barriers to student learning. The authors conclude that the empathetic, process-oriented characterization of IL learning by these faculty invites further examination using multiple methodologies and elevation of faculty's voice in the discourse around IL.
