U.S.- China Policy: How Mistreatment Of The Uighurs Affects Foreign Policy, Divya Forbes May 2020

U.S.- China Policy: How Mistreatment Of The Uighurs Affects Foreign Policy, Divya Forbes

Political Science

The United States and China have a complex relationship that is influenced by security issues, climate change, combatting terrorism, strategic stability, and human rights violations. The United States has held the position that China is a crucial trading partner due to the vast level of economic interdependence between the two nations. However, the United States is a protector of human rights and has not shied away from intervening to protect persecuted religious groups from human rights violations. This paper seeks to distinguish the plight of the Uighur Muslim population in the Xinjiang province in China. It discusses how United States …

The True Capabilities Of American Education Policy, Mirren Galway May 2020

The True Capabilities Of American Education Policy, Mirren Galway

Political Science

This paper is an analysis of today’s American education system, how it has come to be, and why it seems to consistently fall behind when compared to other countries. Beginning with an evaluation of American education today, this paper follows the implementation of recent policy, the deep issues facing the education system and what can be done to address them. Specifically, it explores why, despite such bipartisan legislation like the No Child Left Behind Act, many students and teachers are still being left behind, and why common arguments about education policy continue to fail students. I argue that, although new …

The Intersection Of Free Speech And Abortion: How Federal Courts Are Influencing Doctrine To Further Anti-Abortion Goals, Gina Tan May 2020

The Intersection Of Free Speech And Abortion: How Federal Courts Are Influencing Doctrine To Further Anti-Abortion Goals, Gina Tan

Political Science

Maintaining the accessibility to abortion has been a longstanding battle. While funding for Crisis Pregnancy Centers is increasing, states are cutting funding for abortion clinics (Ludden, 2015) and they are closing at a rate of 1.5 each week (Redden, 2015). Since Roe v. Wade (1973), hundreds of cases have been brought to challenge its legality and limit it as much as possible. The inability to challenge Roe directly has led many conservative legislators to play abortion politics by proxy, regulating what goes on inside and outside clinics, and the federal courts’ play a pivotal role in reviewing these regulations. During …

How Political Engagement Helps Indigenous Communities In Their Fight For Rights, Danielle Duguid May 2020

How Political Engagement Helps Indigenous Communities In Their Fight For Rights, Danielle Duguid

Political Science

How does political engagement help indigenous communities in fighting for their rights? Indigenous communities have faced immense levels of oppression and discrimination throughout history. A growing global trend shows that more communities are fighting back and gaining their rights through political means. This paper looks at the multiple ways communities have mobilized, focusing specifically on non-violent, political methods of resistance. This is done by examining politically active indigenous populations from North, Central, and South America and the states that they reside in. Even though the Inuit, Mayan, and Quechua communities have faced similar discrimination, have the same goals, and reside …

Twice Migration And Indo-Caribbean American Identity Politics, Jessica Ramsawak May 2020

Twice Migration And Indo-Caribbean American Identity Politics, Jessica Ramsawak

Political Science

Being an Indo-Caribbean American can be a confusing and inspiring experience. It is marked with a desperation for understanding oneself and one’s mother, while simultaneously traumatized and burdened with a history of displacement. Migration history can inform the ways in which members of ethnic communities view themselves, their heritage, and their ethnic identity. This is particularly true of the first-generation Indo-Caribbean community in America. The term Indo-Caribbean describes the waves of Indian indentured laborers that were sent to the Caribbean in the early 1800s, developed an Indo-Caribbean culture, and then emigrated in the 1980s to join the Indian diaspora in …

Adverse Childhood Experiences: A Clinical Tool For Intervention With Families And For Exploring Intergenerational Impacts, Molly Silverman

Child Development Theses

Through a discussion of the seminal Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACEs), this thesis will explore the impact that early life experiences have on physical and mental well-being with an underlying emphasis on optimal child development and the essential nature of a stable, nurturing caregiver-child relationship. This thesis focuses first on the existing literature on child development, the attachment relationship, and the connection between adverse childhood experiences and adult behavioral and physical health. Then, this thesis provides an overview of the current efforts to assess adverse childhood experiences, including the impact of adverse experiences in the present moment, the connection between …

The Value Of Play In Infant And Child Psychotherapy In A Group Attachment-Based Intervention (Gabi), Joana Hötte Fittipaldi

Child Development Theses

There is growing interest in examining how attachment-based therapeutic interventions in early childhood can strengthen the bond between parent and child and prevent the transmission of intergenerational trauma. In recent decades, advances in attachment research have contributed to a greater understanding of how important the parent-child relationship is for a child’s well-being and subsequent years in life. This thesis explores the value of play in children’s therapy, specifically its use in dyadic play therapy as a therapeutic technique to strengthen the bond between parent and child. Two case studies from an attachment-based intervention are presented, and focus is given to …

Please, Hold Your Toothpicks: An Analysis Of Autism On Contemporary Television, Kellie N. Veltri May 2020

Please, Hold Your Toothpicks: An Analysis Of Autism On Contemporary Television, Kellie N. Veltri

Haslam Scholars Projects

In the past decade, there has been a boom in representations of varied identities on entertainment television, including characters with mental illness and disabilities. There has particularly been an increase in television representations of autism spectrum disorders, which has coincided with the reframing of autism in the DSM-5. Exposure to these characters has increased public awareness of what autism actually looks like, but their characteristics are still very narrow and do not represent the full range of people with autism and what their experiences with the condition are actually like. In this thesis, I will explore historic representations of autism …

A Case Study On The Best Practices Of The Facilitating Organization For Peer Recovery Support Services In The State Of New Hampshire, Maggie Ringey

School of Professional Studies

In working with the Facilitating Organization for Peer Recovery Support Services through Harbor Homes, I have found that the Recovery Community Organizations that receive support through the FO provide valuable services that help individuals that struggle with substance use disorder achieve and maintain long term sobriety and recovery. The RCOs throughout New Hampshire bridge gaps in services and treatments that are left untouched by traditional clinical methods and through regular check ins, participants at the RCOs have reported that the services provided resulted in positive outcomes in their lives. Throughout the course of this research, I found that the RCOs …

Law Association Of Zambia And Chapter One Foundation Limited V Attorney General 2019/Ccz/0013/0014, Pamela T. Sambo, O'Brien Kaaba

SAIPAR Case Review

The Constitutional Court of Zambia on 29th November 2019 rendered its highly anticipated (abridged) judgment in the case of Law Association of Zambia and Chapter One Foundation Limited v Attorney General 2019/CCZ/0013/0014. In June 2019 the Minister of Justice introduced into the National Assembly the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Bill No. 10 (generally referred to as Bill 10) intended to extensively amend the Constitution. The Bill had been criticized by many stakeholders as it is seen as an attempt to enhance executive powers and undermine constitutionalism. In August 2019, the Law Association of Zambia and Chapter One Foundation Limited commenced …

Typological And Iconographic Analyses Of Casas Grandes Pottery At The Milwaukee Public Museum, Samantha Bomkamp May 2020

Typological And Iconographic Analyses Of Casas Grandes Pottery At The Milwaukee Public Museum, Samantha Bomkamp

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the results of analyses conducted on 80 ceramic vessels from the

Casas Grandes region (Chihuahua, Mexico) currently housed at the Milwaukee Public Museum

(MPM). This collection, most of which was donated in 1977, was accompanied with little to no

provenience information, and no research has been conducted on the materials since they came

to the Museum. Drawing upon published studies of Casas Grandes pottery, a detailed coding

scheme was developed in order to record formal and stylistic data that could be used to classify

the vessels typologically and chronologically. Fifteen different ceramic types dating to the Viejo …

Ethel Dlamini (Born Gule) V Prince Chief Gasawangwane (93/2018b) [2019] Szsc 40 (Judgment 8 October 2019), Simangele D. Mavundla May 2020

Ethel Dlamini (Born Gule) V Prince Chief Gasawangwane (93/2018b) [2019] Szsc 40 (Judgment 8 October 2019), Simangele D. Mavundla

SAIPAR Case Review

The significance of the case of Ethel Dlamini is found in the Supreme Court’s progressive interpretation of the chain of events that were being inflicted to Mrs Dlamini as a violation of her dignity. The court could have looked into the requirements of an interdict to see if Mrs Dlamini’s case was in line with them or not. These are whether the applicant has a prima facie right; apprehension of irreparable injury, and that there is no other satisfactory remedy. Instead, the Court observed that Mrs Dlamini was deprived arbitrarily of the field given to her by her father-in-law and …

Richard Musenyesa V. Indo Zambia Bank Limited Appeal No. 214/2016 (2020), Chanda Chungu May 2020

Richard Musenyesa V. Indo Zambia Bank Limited Appeal No. 214/2016 (2020), Chanda Chungu

SAIPAR Case Review

In Richard Musenyesa v. Indo Zambia Bank Limited, the Supreme Court dealt with an employee whose conditions of service were altered by their employer. The entitlement to gratuity at the end of the employment relationship was not mentioned in the new conditions of employment despite being in the previous conditions that regulated his employment.

The Supreme Court provided that where acquiescence is intended to be assumed from conduct, credible evidence will have to be led, showing that the employee was by clear notice given by the employer indeed aware of the variation, understood the implications and its full extent, before …

Playing Devil’S Advocate: A Conceptual Replication Of Hirt Et Al. (2003), Bresh Merino, Ed Munnich, Milo Martinez May 2020

Playing Devil’S Advocate: A Conceptual Replication Of Hirt Et Al. (2003), Bresh Merino, Ed Munnich, Milo Martinez

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

In the field of psychology, it is important that we foster unbiased judgments in our students and encourage them to engage with material on a critical level. The proposed study is a conceptual replication of Hirt et al. (2003), investigating whether considering alternative hypotheses about the results reduces explanation and overconfidence biases for questions about psychological research. Our proposed replication will also consider whether the benefits of counterfactual thinking were transferable, meaning once individuals are prompted to think counterfactually in one domain, they should show reduced biases when considering an unrelated domain. If these debiasing effects generalize to psychological information, …

The Application Of Biracial And Monoracial Asian American Stereotypes, Tyler Rydeen, Isabelle Moore May 2020

The Application Of Biracial And Monoracial Asian American Stereotypes, Tyler Rydeen, Isabelle Moore

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

Previous research suggests that the biracial stereotype (across all biracial groups) consists of the following characteristics: biracial people are unusually good looking and they struggle to fit in (Skinner, Perry, & Gaither, 2019). This general biracial struggle to fit in has been also described as “confused over their identity” and has been attributed as the reason for why they are judged as less trustworthy, less socially accepted (Chelsey & Wagner, 2013), loyal to their group (Albuja, Sanchez, Gaither, 2017), and socially awkward (Remedios, Chasteen, & Oey, 2012) and less warm (Sanchez & Bonam, 2009) than their monoracial peers. Compared to …

Assessing Conduct Disturbance And Fly Ash Exposure In Children., Jillian G. Winn May 2020

Assessing Conduct Disturbance And Fly Ash Exposure In Children., Jillian G. Winn

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Minimal research has been conducted on fly ash (a byproduct of coal combustion) and health outcomes among exposed communities, and even less has looked at its effect on children’s behavior. This study specifically looks at fly ash exposure and conduct disturbance, using logistic regression to characterize their relationship. Conduct disturbance was gauged by t-scores of 55 or higher on the dimensions of aggression and delinquency of the Child Behavior Checklist. Fly ash exposure was determined by air and surface sampling of the children’s homes. While the odds ratios suggested fly ash exposure increases the likelihood of conduct disturbance, the results …

On The Advantages Of The Disabled In Space., Samantha R. Timmers May 2020

On The Advantages Of The Disabled In Space., Samantha R. Timmers

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Since the start of the astronaut program in the 1960s, candidates have had to prove to be in prime physical shape before being granted clearance to fly, whereas those with physical disabilities such as blindness or deafness are automatically disqualified. The stigma that disabled persons are less qualified to succeed in a physically alien environment has persisted, though little research exists in revisiting the difficulties posed by allowing this group into the space program. This paper aims to reconsider the advantages and disadvantages of a disability-friendly space program, to include cost considerations, potential challenges, and the unique benefits posed by …

From Valladolid To Venezuela : The Legacy Of Las Casas, Vitoria, And Sepúlveda In The Current Venezuelan Crisis., C. Evan Clark

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes the current Venezuelan crisis and the international legal questions it has posed concerning sovereignty, the responsibility to protect, and international efforts to influence a state’s internal politics. In particular, the thesis expounds the historical and theoretical context behind international legal principles that governments, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have invoked in favor of Juan Guaidó or Nicolás Maduro. The thesis’s analysis centers around its examination of the parallels between the international legal principles that relate to the Venezuelan crisis and the political and ethical arguments of the sixteenth-century Spanish social reformer Bartolomé de las Casas and …

Spatiotemporal Analysis Of Traffic Crashes Involving Pedestrians And Cyclists In Jefferson County, Kentucky., Joseph M. Garcia May 2020

Spatiotemporal Analysis Of Traffic Crashes Involving Pedestrians And Cyclists In Jefferson County, Kentucky., Joseph M. Garcia

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Walking and cycling are health-conscious, environmentally friendly modes of transportation, yet very few American trips are accomplished using these methods. A major factor behind this is the fear of being involved in a crash with an automobile. From 2009-2019 there were over 5,200 automobile crashes involving either pedestrians or cyclists in Louisville/ Jefferson County, Kentucky. Researchers have found that these kinds of crashes exhibit spatiotemporal patterns in different cities across the globe. The objective of this study was to determine if there exist any spatial and/or temporal patterns regarding these kinds of crashes. Data for this study came from the …
