It’S Time To Talk About Sexual Health Education: The Process Behind The Youtube Web Show The Confessions Of A Sex-Ed Teacher, Ashley Hendricks
It’S Time To Talk About Sexual Health Education: The Process Behind The Youtube Web Show The Confessions Of A Sex-Ed Teacher, Ashley Hendricks
Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects
There are many topics of discussion that are considered controversial when taught in school systems. One of the most common topics is sexual health education and the material being distributed from teachers to students in a classroom setting. Although there is plenty of research that defines sexual health education as a benefit and positive outcome for lowering sexually transmitted infections and unintended teenage pregnancy, there is still concern about topics regarding sexual activity to adolescents in middle school and high school. One of the best ways to approach a sensitive and controversial topic in academic research is by applying creative …

The first part of the research was a qualitative phenomenological inquiry examining the experiences of eight people who identified as having worked through a substantial process of forgiving in which the arts was an informative part of their process. The second part involved arts-based research to further investigate how art helped facilitate the participants forgiveness process. The primary investigation of the inquiry was: How did involving art effect the participants’ process of forgiving, and, did art facilitate or enrich the forgiveness …
The Impact Of Religiosity And Personality On Resilience And Coping Strategies, Leah Eldred
The Impact Of Religiosity And Personality On Resilience And Coping Strategies, Leah Eldred
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The purpose of the current study was to examine the impact of religiosity and personality on resilience and coping strategies amongst undergraduate college students. Participants completed four different questionnaires measuring religiosity, personality, resilience, and coping skills, as well as a demographic questionnaire. A two-way factorial ANOVA statistical analysis and correlation analyses were conducted. The findings indicated that participants who were pessimistic reported more use of maladaptive coping strategies than optimistic participants. The main implication of this study was that people who are more pessimistic can be taught how to utilize adaptive coping strategies rather than the maladaptive ones that they …
Analysis Of The Evolution Of The Hominin Jaw & Dentition, Matthew Koelbel
Analysis Of The Evolution Of The Hominin Jaw & Dentition, Matthew Koelbel
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The food an organism consumes impacts the evolution of its dentition and facial morphology. As the teeth of early hominins are often some of the only parts of the skeleton to be fossilized, their morphological changes throughout time are better documented and understood than many other body parts. A literature review of articles focusing on the evolution of the dentition and mandibular morphology of members of the tribe Homininae was conducted. We deduced the ways in which tool use and cooking directly affected the teeth of hominins from the late Pleistocene to Pliocene from this information. The tangible ways that …
Predicting The Federal Funds Rate, Danielle Herzberg
Predicting The Federal Funds Rate, Danielle Herzberg
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This thesis examines various economic indicators to select those that are the most significant in a predictive model of the Effective Federal Funds Rate. Three different statistical models were built to show how monetary policy changed over time. These three models frame the last economic downturns in the United States; the tech bubble, the housing bubble, and the Great Recession. Many iterations of statistical regressions were conducted in order to achieve the final three models that highlight variables with the highest levels of significance. It is important to note the economic data has high levels of autocorrelation, and that these …
The Role Of Guaranteed Sexual Education In Argentina And Its Influence In The #Abortolegalya Movement, Shannon Mcgovern
The Role Of Guaranteed Sexual Education In Argentina And Its Influence In The #Abortolegalya Movement, Shannon Mcgovern
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This paper focuses on the role the 2006 Sexual education law in Argentina has on the current #AbortoLegalYa #QueSeaLey movements. With the implementation of guaranteed, free sexual education for every student in Argentina, more individuals began wanting to have a say over their bodies. As more people learned about their reproductive rights, they also learned that they had the right to speak up and demand what they consider necessary. This paper focused on the Campaña national por aborto seguro, legal, y gratuito and their role on influencing both the current movement, and the 2006 passing of the sexual education law. …
Media Content Analysis Of Governmental Impact On Terrorist Reporting, Maggie Kaliszak
Media Content Analysis Of Governmental Impact On Terrorist Reporting, Maggie Kaliszak
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
When terrorism occurs, the government has to respond to it. The media also has the need to respond to terrorism if it is to report the news. Therefore, if both have a connection to terrorism, how do they work together, how do they impact each other, and is the Agenda Setting Theory useful to them? Using three recent attacks, the Boston Marathon Bombing, the Manchester Arena Attack, and the Orlando Nightclub Shooting, this paper analyzes the kind of wording used by the media reporting on terrorism and how the government influences that wording through press releases. The study hypothesizes that …

Blurring Boundaries: Exploring Tweets As A Legitimate Journalism Artifact, Zhaoxi Liu, D. Berkowitz
Communication Faculty Research
This study explores journalists’ use of Twitter and what it means for their craft. Based on 8 weeks newsroom observation and more than a dozen in-depth interviews with reporters and editors at a big metro newspaper, the study found that journalists had contradicting views on whether or not to accept tweets, a form of snippet artifact, as a legitimate journalism artifact, leading to the blurring artifact boundary. Related, journalists faced uncertainties and ambiguities regarding the implications of such snippet artifact for the journalism craft and its core mission of informing the public.
Beloved And The Water Dancer: A Longitudinal Study Of Book Reviews From 1987 And 2019, Tiffany Watson
Beloved And The Water Dancer: A Longitudinal Study Of Book Reviews From 1987 And 2019, Tiffany Watson
Book Publishing Final Research Paper
There is a trail of profoundly pessimistic opinions on the state of book reviews and critics from Lorentzen to Hardwick to Marshall and McCarthy to Poe to Pope.
In earlier drafts, I tapped into that same despair. I considered calling this essay "The Death of the Book Reviewer". I must admit I was committed to the allusion more than to the truth of such a statement. Because, as I read each essay which laid out the faults of the then most-recent form of book reviewing, I came to the conclusion that if the book reviewer is to die, it is …
Current Applications And Limitations Of Forensic Entomology, Helena Volckaert
Current Applications And Limitations Of Forensic Entomology, Helena Volckaert
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
Forensic entomology is the study of arthropods concerning their application in crime scene investigation as a method of predicting postmortem interval (PMI) in deceased or missing individuals. PMI is determined by the life stage of insects present on-scene. Insects used in criminal investigations are primarily beetles, flies, or moths; this may also include various scavenging insects and hitchhiking mites. These creatures help colonize decayed tissue, providing crime scene personnel with live specimens collected and examined for biological evidence. Forensic entomology is currently a niche application in most investigations—as qualified entomologists are often needed—and proper analysis of collected evidence can be …

Invisible Harm: Verbal Sexual Coercion Among College Students, Char Chezanne
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
This paper provides a review of literature and research on verbal sexual coercion on college campuses by focusing on heterosexual dynamics. The studies involved explore the factors that influence sexually coercive behavior, including parenting styles, heteronormative beliefs, and risk-taking behaviors. Furthermore, this paper reviews current informal and formal responses to campus sexual coercion by focusing on the overlooked power dynamics that influence sexual consent. This paper concludes that restorative justice serves as an alternative to traditional justice for campus-based sexual coercion because of its flexibility and applicability to nuanced sexual assault cases.
Qualitative Analysis Of Luminol Efficacy On Bleach-Cleaned And Paint-Concealed Blood, Adam Wykoff
Qualitative Analysis Of Luminol Efficacy On Bleach-Cleaned And Paint-Concealed Blood, Adam Wykoff
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The presence of blood at a crime scene can provide investigators with a treasure trove of information regarding the nature and circumstances of a particular crime and aid in crime scene reconstruction; however, attempts at concealing blood are common scenarios. The development of chemiluminescent and fluorescent-based presumptive tests, such as the luminol and fluorescein tests, have made it more challenging to definitively remove or mask blood on a surface. The purpose of this experiment was to qualitatively measure the overall efficacy of luminol, concerning its ability to positively detect small bloodstains found on common household floor surfaces (wood, carpet, and …
Frequency Of Lip Print Patterns Among Females And Males At San Jose State University, Daniela Zopiyactle
Frequency Of Lip Print Patterns Among Females And Males At San Jose State University, Daniela Zopiyactle
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
Lip prints have distinct forms of wrinkles and grooves unique to an individual much like fingerprints, footprints, and palm prints. Cheiloscopy, or the study of the grooves and wrinkles on the labial mucosa, helps classify, document, and evaluate lip print patterns. This article utilizes cheiloscopy to analyze students from the San Jose State University population; including 25 participants: 15 females and 10 males of ages between 18-45 years. Print collection utilized a matte lipstick, evenly applied on the lip, to create an impression using tape and white bond paper. Then, using the Suzui and Tsuchihashi method, researchers classified the lip …
With Liberty And Justice For Some: How Felony Disenfranchisement Undermines American Democracy, Kiley Staufenbeil
With Liberty And Justice For Some: How Felony Disenfranchisement Undermines American Democracy, Kiley Staufenbeil
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
This paper examines the damaging effects of felony disenfranchisement on American democracy. The premise of American democracy is to include citizens in government processes, thus, felony disenfranchisement is inherently anti-democratic. The first section analyzes the historical timeline of the origins and prominence of felony disenfranchisement dating back to Ancient Greece. The paper considers the legal standing of felony disenfranchisement by examining relevant court cases, such as Richardson v. Ramirez (1974). Following this, a case study of the states that practice distinct levels of felony disenfranchisement, ranging from the most punitive states to the most permissive, is presented. The paper then …
The Black Woman's Burden: A Discussion Of Race, Rape Culture, And Feminism, Rawabi Hamid
The Black Woman's Burden: A Discussion Of Race, Rape Culture, And Feminism, Rawabi Hamid
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
Current feminist and anti-rape movements in the United States seek to amplify the voices of women regarding sexual assault. Unfortunately, within this amplification, the voices of Black women are often excluded, which is a direct effect of historically ignoring the abuses of Black women and rarely ever bringing their abusers to justice. These injustices, often committed by white men and perpetuated by white women, create a destructive rhetoric in stereotyping Black women while also silencing them throughout modern movements, especially those of feminist and anti-rape causes. This essay will examine the consequences of three problematic aspects of US history and …
The Problematic Nature Of Execution By Lethal Injection In The United States And People’S Republic Of China, Franchesca Fanucchi
The Problematic Nature Of Execution By Lethal Injection In The United States And People’S Republic Of China, Franchesca Fanucchi
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The United States and the People’s Republic of China perceive the death penalty as a fundamental feature of the criminal justice system. Lethal injection procedures provide these countries with the humane disguise necessary to preserve capital punishment in an environment of evolving societal standards. However, this essay examines the highly problematic nature of execution by lethal injection due to numerous medical, procedural, and bureaucratic concerns often concealed from the public and press. The low-visibility nature of lethal injection in the United States and China has become troublesome, especially since it prevents public, academic, and medical evaluation on the procedure's humaneness …
Living And Learning In A Lockdown: 5 Ways To Stay Productive And Entertained At Home, Ishan Singh
Living And Learning In A Lockdown: 5 Ways To Stay Productive And Entertained At Home, Ishan Singh
Social Space
If nothing else, the COVID-19 pandemic has taught me that staying at home is tougher than it seems. For introverts like myself, hunkering indoors should come naturally—even pre-coronavirus, I didn't get out a whole lot. Yet the experience has turned out to be very different when hanging out at home becomes less of a pastime and more of national responsibility.

Nature And The Spirit: Tri Hita Karana, Sacred Artistic Practices, And Musical Ecology In Bali, Hao Huang, Joti Rockwell
EnviroLab Asia
Bali is notable for the degree to which music, dance, and visual art permeate everyday life--a result of historically rooted and continuously evolving religious philosophies and rituals. With this context in mind, we wondered what role the arts play, and can play, in addressing environmental concerns.

The Role Of Dna Methylation In White Matter Hyperintensity Burden: An Integrative Approach, Yunju Yang
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Cerebral white matter hyperintensities (WMH) on MRI are an indicator of cerebral small vessel disease, a major risk factor for vascular dementia and stroke. DNA methylation may contribute to the molecular underpinnings of WMH, which are highly heritable. We performed a meta-analysis of 11 epigenome-wide association studies in 6,019 middle-aged to elderly subjects, who were free of dementia and stroke and were of African (AA) or European (EA) descent. In each study, association between WMH volume and each CpG was tested within ancestry using a linear mixed model, adjusted for age, sex, total intracranial volume, white blood cell count, technical …

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Unconventional gas and oil drilling (UGOD) has increased substantially in the United States for more than a decade. The resultant environmental unsafe air pollution effects of UGOD both locally and regionally have been well documented in the literature. Despite the dramatic increase in unconventional well drilling and the toxicant exposure, the health consequences of UGOD remain largely uncertain. This study assesses the relationship between active wells and healthcare use for respiratory diseases by zip code from 2004 to 2008 in the Barnett shale area of Texas. The first modern shale gas well was drilled in the Barnett shale area of …
Understanding Participation In A Workplace Physical Activity Intervention Using Self-Determination Theory: The Booster Break Study, Kathleen Ochipa
Understanding Participation In A Workplace Physical Activity Intervention Using Self-Determination Theory: The Booster Break Study, Kathleen Ochipa
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Abstract: Sedentary behavior can lead to premature mortality, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, and cancer incidence. Office workers are at risk for high amounts of sedentary behavior. Even brief bouts of physical activity that interrupt sedentary behavior can improve office workers’ physical and mental health. The workplace is an optimal setting for increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior among office workers. However, limited literature exists related to the characteristics of participants that adhere to workplace physical activity interventions. This study aimed to identify characteristics of participants who enrolled in the Booster Break program, a 15 minute once-daily intervention during …
Safe Patient Handling – A Case For National Legislation, David O. Oba
Safe Patient Handling – A Case For National Legislation, David O. Oba
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Introduction: This study examined the effectiveness of Safe Patient Handling (SPH) legislations in difference states across the country. In January 2006, the state of Texas legislated the Safe Patient Handling and Movement Practices Act which required all hospitals and nursing homes to implement safe patient handling and movement program. To date, 10 other states have enacted law or regulations to control work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among healthcare workers (HW). Despite the effectiveness of these policies in the individual states, MSDs remain prevalent among HW nationwide. Hence, the call for national legislation. Methods: Using the state-level incidence rate data from the …
A Partial Likelihood Approach To Longitudinal Categorical Data Using A Continuous Time Semi-Markov Chain Model, Kusha A. Mohammadi
A Partial Likelihood Approach To Longitudinal Categorical Data Using A Continuous Time Semi-Markov Chain Model, Kusha A. Mohammadi
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Longitudinal studies have been critical in understanding the characteristics of chronic diseases or interventions. Since many processes have natural multi-categorical responses over time, multi-state stochastic models have been used to estimate the transition rates between stages. Some multi-state models applied in practice assume the Markov property. The Markov property constrains the sojourn distribution to be exponentially distributed. While useful theoretical properties arise by the Markov assumption, we will consider a more flexible framework by allowing arbitrarily distributed waiting times. This describes a semi-Markov process which has already been applied to various fields in Public Health. Similar to Markov model developments, …
Comparison Of Interactive Electronic Versus Standard Document Method For Obtaining Patient Informed Consent, Jermaine Mcmillan
Comparison Of Interactive Electronic Versus Standard Document Method For Obtaining Patient Informed Consent, Jermaine Mcmillan
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
The primary objective of this study was to determine whether participants who received an interactive electronic consent (EC) had a better understanding of a medical procedure (apheresis) compared to those who received the standard document (SD) consent. The study was conducted with apheresis donors whose responses were used to determine if the EC facilitated better comprehension and retention of consent information by the study participants than by SD consenting methods. By comprehension, the goal was to have participants who can understand, summarize, or make judgments based on the content presented in the informed consent. By retention, the goal was to …
Shared Decision Making In The Care Of Post-Acute Psychiatric Individuals With Serious Mental Illness, Natalie J. Maples
Shared Decision Making In The Care Of Post-Acute Psychiatric Individuals With Serious Mental Illness, Natalie J. Maples
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Severe mental illness in adults refers to a group of mental health conditions including schizophrenia and schizoaffective, bipolar and major depressive disorders. These conditions are often characterized by recurring symptoms, multiple hospitalizations, and significant disability. The public health concern with these conditions is amplified because many individuals with severe mental illness fail to engage in outpatient treatment. Methods to support greater rates of participation in outpatient treatment are needed. Encouraging participation in medical decision making is viewed as one method to optimize patient empowerment, increase engagement in care and decrease the negative outcomes that often characterize this population. Shared Decision …
An Assessment Of Outpatient Clinic Room Ventilation Systems And Possible Relationship To Disease Transmission, Kristin G. King
An Assessment Of Outpatient Clinic Room Ventilation Systems And Possible Relationship To Disease Transmission, Kristin G. King
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
The delivery of healthcare in the United States is shifting from a largely inpatient model to an outpatient services model, but the physical infrastructure for outpatient clinics or medical offices may not be as robust as inpatient hospitals regarding whole room ventilation requirements. Guidelines for the design of healthcare facilities and national standards for ventilation establish generally acceptable ventilation rates for outpatient clinics, but it is unclear if these standards are actually being integrated into these settings. Published peer reviewed literature indicates that inadequate ventilation rates can be a risk factor in airborne transmission of infectious diseases in outpatient clinics, …
The Intersection Of Diet, Health And The Environment: Plant Based Diets And Public Health, Christine E. Jovanovic
The Intersection Of Diet, Health And The Environment: Plant Based Diets And Public Health, Christine E. Jovanovic
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Both globally and within the United States, chronic disease has become a major driver of mortality and morbidity. In the United States in 2017, the top ten causes of mortality accounted for 74% of all deaths [2]; of these causes, half are closely linked to diet (heart disease, cancer, stroke, Alzheimer’s and diabetes). [3] In 2013, Ioannidis estimated that 26% of deaths and 14% of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) in the United States may be attributable to dietary risk factors, controlling for obesity. [4] At the same time, diet also has an important impact on the environment. Direct emissions …
