“There’S Something Rotten In Denmark:” Frank Olson And The Macabre Fate Of A Cia Whistleblower In The Early Cold War, Jeremy Kuzmarov

Class, Race and Corporate Power

This paper examines the case of Dr. Frank Olson, a CIA biochemist who worked at the Ft. Detrick facility in Maryland where germ and chemical warfare capabilities were developed. In November 1953, Dr. Olson died after allegedly falling from a thirteenth floor window in New York’s Statler hotel. Initially, his death was ruled a suicide. In 1975, however, the CIA admitted that Olson had been unwittingly drugged with LSD which led to his death and paid the family a lofty financial settlement. However, in 1994, Frank’s son Eric ordered the exhumation of Frank’s body and hired a forensics experts who …

Innovations In Labor Studies - Incorporating Global Perspectives: From Exhortation To Making It Real, Kim Scipes

Class, Race and Corporate Power

Ever since the mid-1840s, there has been an exhortation for workers of the world to unite globally. With the exception of a three-year period between 1946 and 1949 - with the founding and development of the World Federation of Trade Unions immediately after the end of World War II - this has been generally a call limited to rhetoric only. The growing understanding of a globalizing world today, however - affecting the world of work, workers and their organizations - suggests it time for workers to try to make it real. This paper examines two issues pertinent to this new …

Conflict In Kashmir, Matthew Atkison '22, Sarah Oquendo '22, Manaal Shamsi '22

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)

The topic we are discussing in our presentation is the controversy of Kashmir. Kashmir is a region that has recently been in a territorial dispute between India and Pakistan due to it being between the two nations and it having access to an abundant supply of resources. Kashmir has basically been blocked off by the rest of the world and because of this, many protests have sprung in the region, often violent ones with students throwing rocks at officers. Nothing has been done to solve the situation other than Pakistan and India pointing the blame to each other. Many have …

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)

The relationship between China and Hong Kong has been very tense for years ever since Britain allowed Hong Kong to become for 50 years in 1997, before the region would have to officially return to China. Knowing that their 50 years of having a self-governing body will end in 2047, Hong Kong citizens are constantly afraid of their rights. Now to add to the tension, China attempted to pass the Extradition Bill, which would have any citizen of Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau who has committed a crime, be tried in China instead of where they live. This created an uproar …

Relaxing The Rational Expectations Assumption: Data-Based And Model-Based Approaches, Yifan Gong Apr 2020

Relaxing The Rational Expectations Assumption: Data-Based And Model-Based Approaches, Yifan Gong

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The fundamental importance of beliefs about future outcomes in decision-making suggests that an accurate characterization of these beliefs is important for understanding individuals' behavior and for evaluating the counterfactuals typically needed for policy analysis. Traditionally, many researchers have been using some form of Rational Expectations (RE) assumptions to characterize these beliefs. However, empirical evidence suggests that the RE assumption might not hold in many contexts, and that incorrectly imposing the RE assumption can lead to biased policy predictions. Motivated by these findings, I explore alternative approaches to conducting economic analysis without imposing the RE assumption.

Chapters 2 and 3 of …

Has Covid-19 Impacted Price-Weight Relationships And Value Of Gain?, Elliott James Dennis Apr 2020

Has Covid-19 Impacted Price-Weight Relationships And Value Of Gain?, Elliott James Dennis

Extension Farm and Ranch Management News

First paragraph:

In the beginning of COVID-19, much of the attention was focused on managing the redirection of meat product from food service to retail stores. This past month has keenly focused on packing plant closures due to COVID-19 cases among workers and how to manage the supply of fat cattle already ready for slaughter. Fat cattle available for slaughter either cannot get bids or bids are significantly below breakeven prices leaving feedlots with decisions to be made about marketing and placements. The April 2020 Cattle on Feed report (https://usda.library.cornell.edu/concern/publications/m326m174z) revealed March placement decisions. Placements were down about …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: April 29, 2020, Eric Thompson Apr 2020

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: April 29, 2020, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The LEI-N fell by 7.96% during March of 2020 as the COVID-19 Pandemic impacted Nebraska’s economy. The leading indicator primarily fell due to a spike in initial claims for unemployment insurance and a sharp drop in the airline passenger enplanements during March. Other components of the leading indicator also were impacted, given a decline in both building permits for single-family homes and manufacturing hours-worked. There also was a sharp increase in the value of the U.S. dollar during March, which creates additional challenges for both agriculture and manufacturing businesses. The decline in the leading indicator suggests that the Nebraska economy …

Effects Of Anodal Tdcs On Neural Correlates Of Cognitive Control In Mild-To-Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury, Nickolas A. Mertens

Psychology ETDs

Traumatic brain injury is a worldwide epidemic and currently there is no successful treatment to combat the cognitive deficits sustained from a mmTBI. The goal of this analysis is to determine if active tDCS paired with cognitive training can aid in an individual’s recovery on one specific consequence of mmTBI: cognitive control. To examine this novel treatment on cognitive control, EEG was recorded, and FM-theta activity collected from electrode FCz was analyzed. Three analyses were run to address the hypotheses of the present study: 1. A cluster analysis; 2. A series of repeated-measures ANOVAs; and 3. A series of multiple …

“This Is How You Navigate The World”: Impacts Of Mormon Rhetoric On White Queer Members' Identity Performances, Ben Brandley

Communication ETDs

The Mormon Church is one of the fastest growing and most conservative religious organizations in the world. The Church’s conservatism has meant that its rhetorics, doctrines, and discourses have cultivated a culture of queerphobia and anti-queer sentiments. By interviewing 15 transgender, bisexual, and gay Mormons who are active in the Church, I conducted a critical thematic analysis that yields insights and critiques into how Mormon rhetoric impacts the identity performances and relationships of queer members. Using queer theory and Whiteness as conceptual and theoretical lenses, the analysis revealed four major themes: 1) queerness as non-identity, 2) the primacy of divine …

Time For A Paradigm Shift: Covid-19 And Human Consumption, Rachel Robinson-Greene

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

There is much that we still don’t know about COVID-19. To attain a more adequate understanding of the virus, we need to know where it originated and how it passes from one being to another. To control the outbreak and to reduce the likelihood that this will happen with great frequency in the future, it’s important that it’s not only scientists and medical professionals who have this knowledge. The general public needs to understand how human action contributes to tragedies of this magnitude. After all, this pandemic is just one plot line in a much longer and more complicated story …

Job Knowledge Tests, Michelle Graef

Umbrella Summaries

What are job knowledge tests?

In an employment context, job knowledge tests are hiring tools that assess candidates’ knowledge of facts, principles, concepts, and other information that is important for performance of a job (Hunter, 1983). This knowledge falls into two general categories: (a) technical information and (b) the processes and judgmental criteria required to perform correctly and efficiently on the job (Hunter, 1983). Measures of job knowledge vary in the level of specificity of the content. Some measures are intended to test a candidate’s knowledge of specific content for a specific job, whereas other measures are designed to assess …

Birth Across Borders: Migueleña Maternal Experience In Palm Beach County, Florida, Inbal Mazar Apr 2020

Birth Across Borders: Migueleña Maternal Experience In Palm Beach County, Florida, Inbal Mazar

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Dangers for pregnant Maya women in San Miguel Acatán, a highland hamlet in Huehuetenango, Guatemala are exceptionally high. Those who migrate to Palm Beach County, Florida also face significant risks during pregnancy. However, conceptualizing migrants as vulnerable and non-agentive dismisses the opportunity to explore other dimensions of migrant women experiences. Interviews with Migueleña mothers and midwives and health professionals and advocates in both regions revealed resilience strategies Migueleña migrants create and employ as they navigate linguistically and culturally foreign medical systems. The support they provide each other results in more positive maternal experiences under arduous circumstances. Over time, Migueleñas are …

How Do Farmers Experience Agroecology In Rural Communities Of Northern Ecuador?, Neil Michael Ayala Ayala

Latin American Studies ETDs

Agroecology, a concept in continuous evolution embraces science, practice and sociopolitical aspects. Its meaning is gaining space of debate and global interest as an alternative for building sustainable food systems and resilient communities, not only from the environmental perspective, but from all the dimensions of sustainability. The Andes region is recognized for its agrodiversity and for its history of agricultural activity; nevertheless, the effects of unsustainable agricultural practices inspired in the principles of the so called “Green Revolution” are evident. Conventional agriculture has decreased the capacity of resilience of the agroecosystems and their associated communities. Agroecology is often perceived as …

Findings also provide insight into how and why MHPs choose to diagnose OS paraphilias, demonstrating a high level of reliance on documentation. Results indicate the existence of an adversarial allegiance among …
