Using The Home-Underdog Theory To Test The Efficiency Of The Nfl Sports Gambling Market, Dj Loutsch Apr 2020

Using The Home-Underdog Theory To Test The Efficiency Of The Nfl Sports Gambling Market, Dj Loutsch

Major Themes in Economics

NFL sports gambling markets are efficient if one strategy is not consistently profitable year after year. The analysis in this paper examines the efficient market hypothesis using the home-underdog theory. The data were collected for home-underdogs for the last 10 NFL seasons. Important filters were applied to examine potential variations of the home-underdog theory that may be profitable. There was no variation of the home-underdog theory that was consistently profitable year after year. There were 5 different variations that were profitable in the 10 years, but they were not profitable every year. The results provide evidence that the NFL sports …

Representing Italy: Midwest Model United Nations 2020, Jaime D. Bunting Apr 2020

Representing Italy: Midwest Model United Nations 2020, Jaime D. Bunting

Political Science Class Publications

The United Nations is an integral actor in international relations, as well as in politics more generally. As the world becomes ever more interconnected, intergovernmental organizations play an important role in shaping the lives of nations across the globe. Through much research of the treaties and resolutions that are passed by the UN, it has been realized that a member states domestic policy is not only framed under UN agreements (with significant flexibility in implementation), but much policy is being created to reflect values in international law. With this, the work done by the UN, and how these frameworks are …

Audio Description As A Collaborative And Reflexive Tool (Practice Brief), Elizabeth A. Thomson Apr 2020

Audio Description As A Collaborative And Reflexive Tool (Practice Brief), Elizabeth A. Thomson

Student Affairs Publications

With approximately six million people who are blind, between the ages of 16-75+ years of age in the U.S., audio description (AD) is one way to increase people with disabilities' access when visual images are involved (American Council of the Blind, 2019). Snyder (2014) described AD as a verbal description of a program (i.e., performing arts, films, cultural events). Furthermore, AD is distinct from an art label, photo caption, or an audio tour offering more than context, but actual description of the situation (Thomson, 2017). In some cases, AD is available at art and cultural museums. This paper imagines AD …

Maybe I Have Different Opinions Now: Exploring The Learning Experience Of My Social Justice Major, Austin Clements

Social Justice Class Papers

My journey as a social justice major has not been a typical one. I am starting paper off strong with a cliché; I thought it would be better if I just got it out of the way. I came to Ouachita as a music major in hopes of joining the music industry in some capacity. While this has not necessarily changed, the social justice major and my broadening experiences have helped me to realize why I wanted to pursue law school. Through my experiences before my internship in both my volunteer time and in my classes, I learned the value …

Chinese Philo-Semitism: Why China Admires The Jewish People, Jordyn Haime Apr 2020

Chinese Philo-Semitism: Why China Admires The Jewish People, Jordyn Haime

Student Research Projects

Stereotypes formed during the turn of the 20th century continue to resonate with Chinese today and have resulted in a philo-Semitic viewpoint from many Chinese, a level of admiration not found among Chinese for other non-approved foreign religions. The way Chinese view the Jews and Judaism in modern China can reveal much about China’s aspirations and goals. As conversations around race and admiration from the foreign fell out of style after China began closing itself off from the world in 1949, these stereotypical images of Jews became popular again as China opened up in the 1980s and shifted to a …

A Win Win: College Athletes Get Paid For Their Names, Images, And Likenesses And Colleges Maintain The Primacy Of Academics, Jayma Meyer, Andrew S. Zimbalist

Economics: Faculty Publications

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Fair Pay to Play Act (SB 206) into law on September 30, 2019. The bill made it illegal for California's universities to prohibit college athletes from receiving compensation for use of their Names, Images, and Likenesses ("NILs"). Lawmakers soon introduced similar bills in other states1 and in Congress.

In this Article, we explain the history and role of amateurism in college athletics (Part I); the legal landscape of amateurism and paying college athletes, including NIL payments (Part II); the potential scope of NIL payments (Part III); and the NCAA NIL Committee’s recommendations (Part IV). …

An Examination Into The Factors Of Stigma Toward Help Seeking Attitudes In College Student Athletes, Amanda Chapin, Kelly Mcclure Ph.D.

Undergraduate Research

Meeting the demands of a rigorous schedule for a student athlete can be challenging. The appearance of perceived public stigma and self-stigma may interfere with the student athlete’s attitudes toward help seeking, creating a negative relationship between attitudes toward seeking help and the action of seeking help. This study examined college student athlete attitudes toward seeking mental health help in association to perceived public stigma, self-stigma and athletic identity. The sample consisted of 39 college student athletes who participate in a team sport within the Atlantic 10 conference in Division 1 of the NCAA. The cross sectional approach used the …

Bingo! Engaging History Of Science Students With Primary Sources, Leigh Rupinski Apr 2020

Bingo! Engaging History Of Science Students With Primary Sources, Leigh Rupinski

Scholarly Papers and Articles

This case study examines the process of creating an interactive and engaging lesson plan for the History of Science course, HSC 201: The Scientific Revolution. History of Science students tend to be undergraduates majoring in science or medical related fields, rather than the humanities, who need to fulfill an intensive writing or general education requirement. For most, if not all of them, this session would be the first time they experienced hands-on interaction with historical resources. Accordingly, the archivist sought to create a less traditional lesson plan that would foster a sense of fun and interest in the materials.

Barriers To Bystander Interventions For Sexual Assault - Department Of Psychology Research Session, Tylor Kistler Apr 2020

Barriers To Bystander Interventions For Sexual Assault - Department Of Psychology Research Session, Tylor Kistler

Student Scholars Day Oral Presentations

Bystander intervention programs have consistently demonstrated beneficial effects on community norms and intervention behaviors (Kettrey, Marx, & TannerSmith, 2019). However, much of the research fails to measure opportunities to intervene relative to actual behaviors (McMahon et al., 2015), and how these behaviors relate to a personal history of sexual victimization (Woods et al., 2016). This study aimed to examine the relationship between a bystander’s victimization history, perceived barriers, and bystander intervention. Data from undergraduate students (N = 583; 79.7% female; MAge=18.92) suggested that those with such a history perceive themselves as less able to identify risky situations, but are actually …

Based on extensive archival research findings, Detroit’s Black community intensely opposed racism and oppression, and Black auto workers were at the vanguard of this struggle within Detroit. These workers had strong reactions to the Vietnam War. The Inner City Voice and the League of Revolutionary Black Workers were militant groups in Detroit’s Black community during the Vietnam War. The politics and ideals of these Black groups were aligned …

Student Scholars Day Oral Presentations

Part Two - Unnatural

As a continuation of part one, we attempt to accentuate the growing disconnect from nature. In their obsession for perfection, humans have sought to replicate everything natural in a flawless and everlasting way. Not only have we produced fake plants and artificial flavoring, but we have also started manipulating ourselves to form a distorted version of the original. To show this, we are combining human elements with our synthetic products and framing our work in a way that you can clearly see the distortion. Nature is essential to human survival, yet we continue to become unnatural. …

How Diet Affects The Environment, Jessica Riley

Student Scholars Day Posters

While climate events result in large scale economic costs for communities, the social impacts are just as devastating. With the community event titled "How Diet Affects the Environment," the aim was to spread awareness about the negative environmental impacts of consuming animal products. From the literature and collaboration, attendees were encouraged to acknowledge how their eating habits affect the environment. Raising animals for food is responsible for 30% of the world's water consumption, occupies 45% of the earth's land, and is responsible for 91% of Amazon destruction. By exposing people to this information, there was a push to catalyze a …

Exploration Of The Effectiveness Of Naprotechnology In Women’S Healthcare, Cecilia Cerven

Student Scholars Day Posters

Many women today struggle with abnormal menstrual cycles and the painful symptoms of reproductive disorders. The standard approach to treatment of irregular menses, PCOS, endometriosis, hormonal abnormalities, PMS, and other conditions is the prescription of a pill for symptom management. A relatively new and innovative method to fertility care is drawing the attention of healthcare providers and prospective clients alike, which offers an alternative approach. NaProTechnology, or Natural Procreative Technology, works with Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FABMs) to detect and treat various reproductive disorders. This project will assist in bridging the gaps in education and overall awareness of treatment options available …

Pushing Boundaries: Experimental Expressions - Natural (Part One), Abigail Emens, Olivia Kelly, Sydney Kruise, Jillian Neumann, Kimberley Quinn, Meghan Reiman, Jacob Westbrook, Zoe Zaroff

Student Scholars Day Oral Presentations

Part One - Natural

As a collective, we aim to explore the interplay between nature and humanity through experimental photographic mediums both 2D and 3d. We hope to convey eight different interconnected perspectives on this concept. To achieve this, we incorporate photographic mediums involving elements from the natural world such as the obvious, plants, butterflies, and spider webs, to the more abstract existence of humans. We were once heavily connected with nature, relying on it to sustain life. While nature continues to be essential to human survival, we have become disconnected.

Binding Morality Foundations, Moral Enhancement, And Religious Attributions Using A Bogus Feedback Paradigm, Lucretia Dunlap, Jayce Masters Apr 2020

Binding Morality Foundations, Moral Enhancement, And Religious Attributions Using A Bogus Feedback Paradigm, Lucretia Dunlap, Jayce Masters

Student Scholars Day Posters

The illusory belief that one is morally superior to others is widespread. There are individual differences in the need to see one’s self as moral. For example, religious individuals tend to self-enhance their perceived level of morality. In our study, participants completed measures of moral attitudes and behaviors and received either high or low (bogus) feedback on their moral performance. Those high in binding moral foundations (e.g., valuing obedience and group allegiance) who received high feedback were significantly more likely to attribute their motivation to religious sources. Binding moral foundations may be particularly linked to self-enhancement.
