Alternative Energy: Vested Interest In The Power Of Power, Joshua Pham

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

Through the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the future of alternative energy within the United States has been uncertain and constantly shifting. However, as the 21st century has progressed, the path for alternative energy has began to solidify and certain patterns have emerged. This article addresses the dynamics displayed through a hybrid institutional-ecological/green framework to draw insights about the underlying causes for the paths these industries have taken.

Productivity And Automation In Automotive Manufacturing: The Impact On Ohio Employment, James Olderham Apr 2020

Productivity And Automation In Automotive Manufacturing: The Impact On Ohio Employment, James Olderham

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

The supposed decline of the United States manufacturing industry has been a central topic of political concerns and research for decades. The classic story is that America’s might in this sector was seen as the backbone of the economy and a central factor in the nation’s economic dominance relative to the rest of the world. In light of this, it’s easy to see how a decline in the manufacturing base has become such an important issue. In recent years, two main theories have emerged as to what is to blame for the loss American manufacturing jobs over the last two …

Foreign Direct Investment And Environmental Regulations, Kiel Hawk Apr 2020

Foreign Direct Investment And Environmental Regulations, Kiel Hawk

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

For the longevity of our species as well as much of the biodiversity that remains, understanding the environmental impact of our decisions is paramount. We are amid the 6th mass extinction in the Earth’s history, and unlike the previous five this one’s on us. Having transgressed from the Holocene to the Anthropocene, we have found ourselves in an era that has lost many of the ecological features that has enabled our species to live such high standards of living, for wealth is dependent on that which nature provides. Over the past several decades, beginning around the 1970’s, we have been …

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Healing Mindfully, Taylor Kay West Apr 2020

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Healing Mindfully, Taylor Kay West

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental health disorder that has had some pretty significant changes over history. Affected populations, symptomatology, among other things have changed with the disorder as more has become known. Although not every individual who experiences a traumatic event will develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, it is imperative to be aware of the effects of trauma. Trauma affects a fairly significant (5%) amount of the general population of children and adolescents ages 13-18. However, when one looks into the youth that are incarcerated in juvenile detention centers, the amount of youth who meet the criteria for Post-Traumatic Stress …

Governors And Public Higher Education: A Multiple Case Study Of Governors Bill Haslam And Paul Patton, Shannon W. Gilkey Apr 2020

Governors And Public Higher Education: A Multiple Case Study Of Governors Bill Haslam And Paul Patton, Shannon W. Gilkey

Dissertations

Governors can impose tremendous influence on public policy. In their attempt to address issues that their states face, and in order to sustain and improve the present and long-term health of its citizenry, some governors invest significant resources to shape the direction of their state’s postsecondary system of education. This study examined the critical elements that led two different governors to enact large-scale impact on state postsecondary education by investigating three research questions through a qualitative multiple-instrument case study: (a) How do governors’ vision for their state intersect with their view of postsecondary education as a key policy priority area …

Etymology Of “Ragtime”: Role Of “Tag, Rag, And “Bobtail” (The Rabble) And The 19th Century “Fancy Rag Balls”, Fred Hoeptner Apr 2020

Etymology Of “Ragtime”: Role Of “Tag, Rag, And “Bobtail” (The Rabble) And The 19th Century “Fancy Rag Balls”, Fred Hoeptner

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

Despite abundant speculation about the etymology of “rag” in “ragtime” since the emergence of ragtime music into popular consciousness in 1896, a convincing solution has remained elusive. As OED3 sums up the situation (rag, n. meaning #5): “Origin uncertain and disputed.”

But at least some new insight may now be possible. The present study is the first to use digitized newspaper archives to track “rag” and “ragtime” from their sources to full maturity, and the following picture emerges:

  1. The starting point is tag, rag, and bobtail “the common herd, the rabble”; the word appears in OED3 under bob-tail.
  2. Rag as …

Robust Estimation And Inference Of Spatial Panel Data Models With Fixed Effects, Shew Fan Liu, Zhenlin Yang Apr 2020

Robust Estimation And Inference Of Spatial Panel Data Models With Fixed Effects, Shew Fan Liu, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

It is well established that the quasi maximum likelihood (QML) estimation of the spatial regression models is generally inconsistent under unknown cross-sectional heteroskedasticity (CH) and the CH-robust methods have been developed. The same issue remains for the spatial panel data (SPD) models but the similar studies based on QML approach do not seem to have been carried out. This paper focuses on the SPD model with fixed effects (FE). We argue that under unknown CH the QML estimator for the SPD-FE model is inconsistent in general, but there are ‘special cases’ where it may remain consistent although the exact conditions …

Understanding Economic And Business Impacts Of Street Improvements For Bicycle And Mobility – A Multicity Multiapproach Exploration, Jenny H. Liu, Wei Shi Apr 2020

Understanding Economic And Business Impacts Of Street Improvements For Bicycle And Mobility – A Multicity Multiapproach Exploration, Jenny H. Liu, Wei Shi

TREC Final Reports

Many cities across the country, as part of Complete Streets initiatives or to promote community livability and environmental sustainability, have engaged in street improvement or transportation infrastructure upgrade projects that increase access and mobility for pedestrians and bicyclists through a reduction of on-street parking or traffic lanes. With various transportation modes competing for scarce resources (including right-of-way and transportation funding), city planners and transportation agencies often struggle with how to justify these infrastructure investments for non-motorized modes such as bicycling and walking, particularly when driving is still the predominant mode of transportation in most cities. There is a vital need …

¿“La Familia Diversa”?: Una Investigación En Constructos De Familias En Ecuador En El Siglo Xxi, Julia Cornick Apr 2020

¿“La Familia Diversa”?: Una Investigación En Constructos De Familias En Ecuador En El Siglo Xxi, Julia Cornick

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Is The Risk Worth It?, Porter Mcmichael Apr 2020

Is The Risk Worth It?, Porter Mcmichael

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

This is a video ethnography that includes audio from interviews with alpine climbers and footage from first ascents in the North Cascades. The topic focuses on risk, why the risk is worth it, how they come to terms with increased risk, and how they think about death. The goal of this project is to expand the understanding of how risk is approached by climbers who are pushing the limits of their mortality. The big takeaways of how climbers justify risk can be applied to everyday life and the decisions we make.

The Syntax Of Guaraní: A Pronominal Argument Analysis Of A Noteworthy Indigenous Language, Emily Hillman Apr 2020

The Syntax Of Guaraní: A Pronominal Argument Analysis Of A Noteworthy Indigenous Language, Emily Hillman

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Broadly speaking, I examine the syntax of Guaraní, an indigenous language of Paraguay, and offer my analyses of complex syntactic questions in relation to the language. My research stems from a paper that I wrote in the fall of 2018 that led to many questions and preliminary hypotheses related to argument marking and the Guaraní verb. Under the direction of Dr. Kristin Denham, I answer these questions through a pronominal argument (PA) analysis of Guaraní. I defend the position that Guaraní is a PA language by examining data from prior literature and native speakers. Throughout my paper, I consider discussions …

Re-Thinking Mass Incarceration: Covid-19 In Jails And Prisons, Rachel Robinson-Greene Apr 2020

Re-Thinking Mass Incarceration: Covid-19 In Jails And Prisons, Rachel Robinson-Greene

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

More people per capita are incarcerated in the United States than in any other country in the world—698 out of every 100,000 people are currently incarcerated. Many jails and prisons in the United States are overcrowded. This means that the number of people they have detained exceeds their safe carrying capacity both in terms of space and resources. As the COVID-19 threat intensifies, people across the planet are being strongly encouraged, and in some cases ordered, to stay at home and to practice social distancing. This advice is impossible to follow in a jail or a prison, especially one that …

Scaling Community Health Coalitions: The Well Connected Communities Pilot Initiative, Sandra H. Sulzer, Stacey Macarthur, Zurishaddai Garcia, Christine E. Jensen, Suzanne Prevedel, Maren Wright Voss Apr 2020

Scaling Community Health Coalitions: The Well Connected Communities Pilot Initiative, Sandra H. Sulzer, Stacey Macarthur, Zurishaddai Garcia, Christine E. Jensen, Suzanne Prevedel, Maren Wright Voss

Extension Research

We outline the process and development of the Well Connected Communities health initiative as undertaken in three Utah communities. This transformative community-focused alternative to addressing public health issues through Extension situates local communities as the origin for health decision making. The initiative recognizes the need for varied community statuses (i.e., planner, implementer, and innovator) based on varying levels of readiness and diversity of populations. We concluded that the Utah Well Connected Communities initiative aligns well with the 2014 Extension Committee on Organization and Policy National Framework for Health and Wellness. Replication requirements and implications for other Extension programs are presented.

Extension Needs Outreach Innovation Free From The Harms Of Social Media, Jonathan J. Swinton Apr 2020

Extension Needs Outreach Innovation Free From The Harms Of Social Media, Jonathan J. Swinton

Extension Research

Despite the outreach-building benefits of social media for Extension, it is time for Extension professionals to find new innovative ways to reach out that do not involve social media. An increasing body of research has demonstrated the harms social media use imparts on the health and well-being of those in our communities. Our future use of social media as a primary method of outreach may perpetuate these harms, requiring our best efforts to develop new methods of outreach that do not negatively affect those we serve.

Sharp Power: How Foreign Election Interference Is Changing The Global Balance Of Power, Ethan Greene Apr 2020

Sharp Power: How Foreign Election Interference Is Changing The Global Balance Of Power, Ethan Greene

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

The term sharp power was coined in 2017 in order to describe what appeared to be a new form of covert influence by Russia, China, and other authoritarian states into the political systems of democracies. The increasing effectiveness of sharp power, due to advances in technology and the growing power of China and Russia, emphasizes a change to a more multipolar global balance of power. While the term sharp power ultimately does not describe new tactics, indeed information warfare already serves this purpose, it can help illuminate what global leadership will look like from authoritarian states in the near future. …

Les Femmes Capables: A Supplementary Curriculum Teaching Survival English To Female Senegalese Ells, Abigail Morse Apr 2020

Les Femmes Capables: A Supplementary Curriculum Teaching Survival English To Female Senegalese Ells, Abigail Morse

Honors Theses

My thesis examines the contrast between a Muslim man’s opportunity to learn English versus his wife's, who, in a traditional context, would be limited by social obligations to her home and family's welfare. I look specifically at the roles of Muslim Senegalese women. I provide basic cultural context and teaching methods to ESL teachers. I also provide basic vocabulary lists and lesson plans about important situations such as "going to the doctor." The language needed to complete daily tasks is not taught in general language classes, and my goal is to change that.

The Challenges Of Deaf Women In Society: An Investigative Report, Megan Harris Apr 2020

The Challenges Of Deaf Women In Society: An Investigative Report, Megan Harris

Honors Theses

History has recorded the mistreatment of both Deaf people and women across time and cultures. The discrimination, struggle for rights, and the strides of progress thus far are congruent themes in both narratives, but neither expressly acknowledges the experiences of Deaf women, who encounter prejudice for both labels. In order to ascertain the breadth and magnitude of Deaf women’s challenges, their role and limitations in Deaf history, and their personal and social difficulties today were researched. These challenges are then illustrated by six personal accounts from modern Deaf women. The results of the study indicated that Deaf women experienced and …

The Evolution Of Work In The United States, Enghin Atalay, Phai Phongthiengtham, Sebastian Sotelo, Daniel Tannenbaum

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Using the text from job ads, we introduce a new dataset to describe the evolution of work from 1950 to 2000. We show that the transformation of the US labor market away from routine cognitive and manual tasks and toward nonroutine interactive and analytic tasks has been larger than prior research has found, with a substantial fraction of total changes occurring within narrowly defined job titles. We provide narrative and systematic evidence on changes in task content within job titles and on the emergence and disappearance of individual job titles. (JEL E24, J21, J24, J31, N32)

A Comparison Of Power Variables For Two Loading Methods In Weighted Vertical Jumps 2020, Jonathan Tanguay

Master's Theses

Training exercises to develop muscular strength and power, such as the weighted jump squat, commonly utilize barbells and dumbbells to increase resistance. Strength coaches often measure improvements in peak force, peak power, and rate of force development to determine effectiveness of a training program. The purpose of this study was to determine if equipment selection (barbells vs. dumbbells) affects peak force, peak power, and/or rate of force development in weighted jump squats. Thirteen physically active, college-aged males (age: 21.6 ± 2.0 years, height: 182.8 ± 9.7 cm, body mass: 87.2 ± 9.0 kg, lean mass: 72.3 ± 8.1 kg) performed …

The Temporal Relevance Of Scraping And Polishing Of Trincheras Pottery Sherds In The Alter Valley, Sonora, México, Eta Pastreich

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis focuses on the classification of Trincheras plainware pottery. Trincheras plainware ceramics classifications and their applications have been reexamined in recent years due to an expansion of research. My participation in laboratory research of recently excavated Trincheras pottery was conducted during the 2018 field season of Proyecto Tradicíon Trincheras- in Sonora, México. This project was led by Randall McGuire and Elisa Villalpando. I organized two preliminary studies on ceramics from the Sonoran sites of La Potranca (SON:F:2:4) and San Martin (SON:F:2:82). This paper attempts to illustrate the chronological and typological relevance of scraping and polishing, and the significance of …

Exploring Psychological Flexibility’S Effects On White Privilege Attitudes, Carl Sallee Apr 2020

Exploring Psychological Flexibility’S Effects On White Privilege Attitudes, Carl Sallee

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The following study investigates the links between psychological flexibility and attitudes that White people have toward White privilege. Psychological flexibility is defined as one’s ability to contact the present moment as a conscious human being with the ability to flexibly act in ways that serve personal values. The study did not support the hypothesis that an ACT intervention would significantly increase one’s psychological flexibility, which would covertly affect an increase in their White privilege awareness, remorse, anticipated costs of confronting, and willingness to confront White privilege. The study found no increase in psychological flexibility measures among students who received a …
