Integrating The 1st Person View And The 3rd Person View Using A Connected Vr-Mr System For Pilot Training, Chang-Geun Oh Ph.D., Myunghoon Oh Ph.D. Mar 2020

Integrating The 1st Person View And The 3rd Person View Using A Connected Vr-Mr System For Pilot Training, Chang-Geun Oh Ph.D., Myunghoon Oh Ph.D.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Many virtual reality (VR)-based flight simulation programs provide pilots the enhanced reality from the 1st person-view to make themselves immersed in the cockpit. Using the VR simulations, pilots can take flight training in many challenging situations that are hard to create in real environments due to its natural entropy and safety concerns such as severe crosswind or engine fire. Mixed reality (MR) technology provides three-dimensional graphics so that users can effectively see all 360 degree-vertical and horizontal aspects of an object while they freely move around to see the graphics maintaining the consciousness of real space. Flight instructors may …

Examination Of The Impact Of Various Training Approaches On Different Uas Operator Populations, Summer Rebensky M.S., Meredith Carroll Ph.D., Maria Chaparro M.S.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

In recent years, the UAS industry has extended beyond military and recreational use and is now positioned to become a major portion of the aviation industry. As we move toward UAS integration into the national airspace system, UAS operators need effective training to ensure safe operation. Training UAS operators in an engaging way is important to ensure the best performance and transfer of training. Training methods that elicit high levels of learner engagement have been shown to improve knowledge gains, performance, and therefore such training techniques provide an opportunity for improving UAS training effectiveness and transfer. The growth of the …

Essays On Criminal Behaviour, Human Capital Formation, And Mental Health, Diego F. Salazar Mar 2020

Essays On Criminal Behaviour, Human Capital Formation, And Mental Health, Diego F. Salazar

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

My thesis consists of three chapters that contribute to the study of some of the negative consequences of incarceration and their relation with the life-cycle choices of juvenile offenders.

Chapter 2 studies the causal relationship between incarceration and mental health problems. In this chapter, I use different matching estimators to identify the causal effects of incarceration over several dimensions of mental health using data from a survey of juvenile offenders, the Pathways to Desistance (PTD) survey. My findings show that being incarcerated for the first time, between 17 and 18 years old, increases depression by at least 0.18 standard deviations …

Evaluating Scenarios That Can Startle And Surprise Pilots, Rahim D. Agha, Andrew R. Dattel Ph.D., Jennifer E. Thropp Ph.D. Mar 2020

Evaluating Scenarios That Can Startle And Surprise Pilots, Rahim D. Agha, Andrew R. Dattel Ph.D., Jennifer E. Thropp Ph.D.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Startle and surprise in the cockpit have contributed to multiple aviation accidents. The aviation safety boards of France, the United States, and Holland have concluded that startle and surprise pose a serious threat to pilots. This study identified the effects startle and surprise had on multi-engine rated pilots. Surprise is defined here as something unexpected (e.g., engine failure). Startle is the associated exaggerated effect of an unexpected condition (e.g., loud bang). At this point, data has been collected on 15 pilots. Pilots were tested in an aviation training device configured to a Cessna 172 and a Beechcraft Baron 58. Each …

Prevalence Of Invulnerability In Collegiate Part 141 Flight Students, Andrew Nakushian, Aayush Kapar, Kenley Ryan, Rian Mehta Ph.D., Brooke Wheeler Ph.D. Mar 2020

Prevalence Of Invulnerability In Collegiate Part 141 Flight Students, Andrew Nakushian, Aayush Kapar, Kenley Ryan, Rian Mehta Ph.D., Brooke Wheeler Ph.D.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Nearly every flight training program focuses on promoting good habits for aeronautical decision making. Some of the factors that influence aeronautical decision making are hazardous attitudes. The five hazardous attitudes are thought patterns that put pilots at risk of being involved in an accident. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of one hazardous attitude, invulnerability, in Collegiate Part 141 flight students. Participants were recruited from a collegiate flight program at a university in Florida. Invulnerability is particularly important to study because a pilot thinking that he/she is immune from being in an accident could lead to …

Avoiding Death By Discussion Board: Asynchronous Online Chats In Aviation History, Austin T. Walden Ph.D. Mar 2020

Avoiding Death By Discussion Board: Asynchronous Online Chats In Aviation History, Austin T. Walden Ph.D.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Universities and colleges are increasingly turning to online course offerings, especially in aviation education. Faculty are increasingly asked to turn their in-person courses into online flavors. Typically, faculty are creating online courses with discussion boards to mimic the scholarly community that exists in a face-to-face classroom. Faculty often create discussion boards, with varying degrees of effectiveness, to provide for the immersion of community. However, the actual effectiveness of discussion boards is debated in recent research.

This research examines Asynchronous Online Chats as a replacement for the "Death by Discussion Board" model. Data from the past two semesters will be examined …

Recommended Training Practices To Prepare Pilots To Cope With Information Conflicts, Meredith Carroll Ph.D., Paige Sanchez, Donna Wilt Mar 2020

Recommended Training Practices To Prepare Pilots To Cope With Information Conflicts, Meredith Carroll Ph.D., Paige Sanchez, Donna Wilt

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

As the next generation of flight deck information systems are being utilized on the flight deck, pilots now have greater amounts of information at their fingertips. Information that was typically available only from certified information sources in aircraft panels, is now being provided by a range of sources, both within the panel and on Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs). Although redundant sources of information provide pilots a means by which to crosscheck and hone in on ground truth, they also introduce the potential for pilots encountering conflicting information. As conflicting information can have negative effects on decision making, there is a …

America's Last Great Newspaper War [Table Of Contents], Mike Jaccarino

Cinema & Media Studies

A from-the-trenches view of New York Daily News and New York Post runners and photographers who would stop at nothing to break the story and squash their tabloid arch rivals.

When author Mike Jaccarino was offered a job at the Daily News in 2006, he was asked a single question: “Kid, what are you going to do to help us beat the Post?” That was the year things went sideways at the News, when The New York Post surpassed its nemesis in circulation for the first time in the history of both papers. Tasked with one job—crush the …

Uniquely Okinawan: Determining Identity During The U.S. Wartime Occupation, Courtney A. Short Mar 2020

Uniquely Okinawan: Determining Identity During The U.S. Wartime Occupation, Courtney A. Short

History

When the U.S. military landed on the shores of Okinawa in 1945, they faced not only a fierce and battle-tested Japanese force, but also 463,000 Okinawan inhabitants. Larger than any other civilian population encountered by the Americans during previous campaigns throughout the Pacific islands, the people of Okinawa also had a unique and complex historical and political relationship with Japan. Okinawa never experienced subjugation as a colony, yet its acceptance as a prefecture did not yield equal treatment for the people because of their Ryukyuan heritage. As the U.S. military prepared for the Battle of Okinawa, they faced dangerous uncertainty …

Expanded Cinema: Fiftieth Anniversary Edition [ Table Of Contents], Gene Youngblood Mar 2020

Expanded Cinema: Fiftieth Anniversary Edition [ Table Of Contents], Gene Youngblood

Cinema & Media Studies

Fiftieth anniversary reissue of the founding media studies book that helped establish media art as a cultural category.

First published in 1970, Gene Youngblood’s influential Expanded Cinema was the first serious treatment of video, computers, and holography as cinematic tools. Long considered the Bible for media artists, Youngblood’s insider account of 1960s counterculture and the birth of cybernetics remains a mainstay reference in today’s hypermediated digital world. This fiftieth-anniversary edition includes a new Introduction by the author that offers conceptual tools for understanding the sociocultural and sociopolitical realities of our present world.

A unique eyewitness account of burgeoning experimental film …

Crimmigrant Nations: Resurgent Nationalism And The Closing Of Borders [Table Of Contents], Robert Koulish, Martje Van Der Woude

Law

As the distinction between domestic and international is increasingly blurred along with the line between internal and external borders, migrants—particularly people of color—have become emblematic of the hybrid threat both to national security and sovereignty and to safety and order inside the state. From building walls and fences, overcrowding detention facilities, and beefing up border policing and border controls, a new narrative has arrived that has migrants assume the risk for government sponsored degradation, misery, and death. Crimmigrant Nationsexamines the parallel rise of anti-immigrant sentiment and right-wing populism in both the United States and Europe to offer an unprecedented …

Durable Power Of Attorney For Health Care In Oncology, Monica Wilber Mar 2020

Durable Power Of Attorney For Health Care In Oncology, Monica Wilber

MSW Capstones

Almost everyone knows someone who has been impacted by cancer, but how many people do you know have a durable power of attorney for health care? Durable power of attorney for health care is a simple form that allows you to appoint whomever you trust to make health care decisions for yourself if you are deemed unable to do so. Durable power of attorney for health care, also known as DPOA-H, is a topic that can create some ambivalence within those working in the oncology field and those who have been impacted by a cancer diagnosis. The ambivalence comes from …

Long-Term Impact Of Welfare Reform: Biopsychosocial Barriers To Successful Transition Away From Welfare Reliance Among Rural Women In Louisiana, Jake Jerome Guidry

LSU Master's Theses

The discussion regarding government benefits and reliance on welfare benefits is one that takes place in arenas of policymaking and academia alike. These discussions often focus on poverty that exists in densely populated metropolitan areas, resulting in a scarcity of research regarding unique characteristics of rural poverty. Eighty-four rural Louisiana women participated in a longitudinal study of the impacts of welfare reform in their lives. Twenty years later, two (N = 2) rural Louisiana women, each former welfare recipients, participated in an in-depth qualitative case study examining their transition away from welfare programs. Data show that neither woman was …

Wait, There’S Torture In Zootopia? Examining The Prevalence Of Torture In Popular Movies, Casey Delehanty, Erin M. Kearns Mar 2020

Wait, There’S Torture In Zootopia? Examining The Prevalence Of Torture In Popular Movies, Casey Delehanty, Erin M. Kearns

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Roughly half of the U.S. public thinks that torture can be acceptable in counterterrorism. According to recent research, dramatic depictions of torture increase public support for the practice. Yet we do not know how frequently—and in what context—torture is depicted across popular media. What messages about the acceptability and effectiveness of torture do Americans receive when they watch popular films? To address this question, we coded each incident of torture in the twenty top-grossing films each year from 2008 to 2017 to analyze how torture is portrayed in terms of its frequency, efficacy, and social acceptability. Results show that the …
