Collaborating Across Consortial Boundaries, Jill Morris, Kirsten Leonard

Collaborative Librarianship

It is nearly a given that most academic library directors feel the need to collaborate with other libraries to contain costs, develop new programs, and accomplish their missions; and historically, many have done so by participating in a library consortium, and sometimes in multiple consortia. In this article, the executive directors of The Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc. (PALCI) and the Private Academic Library Network of Indiana (PALNI), two long-standing academic library consortia, share their insights and experiences as they have observed the necessity for broadening consortial collaboration through cross-consortial partnerships, moving from coordinated efforts toward deeper collaboration across consortium …

Mediation Among Childhood Sexual Abuse, Self-Objectification, And Risk Recognition, Michelle Maria Coventry

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between childhood sexual abuse (CSA), self-objectification, and risk recognition in a sample of freshman, college women. Self-objectification was expected to interfere with the ability to readily identify risk (risk appraisal) and respond effectively (risk response), particularly for survivors of CSA. Participants were 335 freshman women ages 18 to 25, with 47.8% reporting a history of CSA. Participants completed an online survey that assessed demographics, abuse history, and indicators of self-objectification (body surveillance, body shame, and appearance anxiety). Participants also completed a task to assess risk recognition which included reading …

Roots In Antiquity: A Comparative Study Of Two Cultures, Lara Younes Freajah Feb 2020

Roots In Antiquity: A Comparative Study Of Two Cultures, Lara Younes Freajah

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted with the goal to provide an in-depth analysis of the analogous qualities of two very distinct yet similar cultures: the Arab and Sarakatsan cultures, with a particular focus on personal matters that deal with family and kinship. Despite the difference in religions, both groups demonstrate a substantive set of similar traits especially in terms of the interactions, dynamics, and functionality of family relations in addition to the highly-esteemed values that dictate everyday conduct. As a first-generation Arab Muslim who immigrated to the United States, I use the culture in which I am entrenched as a basis …

Developing A Research Data Policy Framework For All Journals And Publishers, Iain Hrynaszkiewicz, Natasha Simons, Azhar Hussain, Rebecca Grant, Simon Goudie

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

More journals and publishers – and funding agencies and institutions – are introducing research data policies. But as the prevalence of policies increases, there is potential to confuse researchers and support staff with numerous or conflicting policy requirements. We define and describe 14 features of journal research data policies and arrange these into a set of six standard policy types or tiers, which can be adopted by journals and publishers to promote data sharing in a way that encourages good practice and is appropriate for their audience’s perceived needs. Policy features include coverage of topics such as data citation, data …

Review Of Digital Curation For Libraries And Archives, Barbara Austen Feb 2020

Review Of Digital Curation For Libraries And Archives, Barbara Austen

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Stacy T. Kowalczyk wrote Digital Curation for Libraries and Archives as an introductory textbook for students in information, library, and archival science, as well as for working librarians, archivists, and information professionals. It provides a good balance of theory and practice. It succeeds as a textbook but could be challenging for working professionals without a strong technical background.

Toward A Competency Framework For Canadian Archivists, Anne Daniel, Amanda Oliver, Amanda Jamieson

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The goal of this research project is to establish a foundational competency framework for Canadian archivists. This was achieved by performing a qualitative analysis of established frameworks and generating a foundational competency framework from that analysis. The framework reflects current skills and knowledge requirements. The competency framework is meant to capture all facets of managing an archives, including activities such as governance and human resources. It is intended to strike a balance among all aspects of archival practice. Future iterations should include emergent issues such as emotional labor and regional practices. This competency framework is intended to define and communicate …

Review Of A Matter Of Facts: The Value Of Evidence In An Information Age, Beaudry Rae Allen Feb 2020

Review Of A Matter Of Facts: The Value Of Evidence In An Information Age, Beaudry Rae Allen

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Laura A. Millar’s A Matter of Facts: The Value of Evidence in an Information Age sets out to convince the general public of the value of evidence and why it matters by presenting several stories about evidence through the lens of recordkeeping. Millar frames the book around how do we trust information, especially in this post-truth world, and examines it through three main questions: what is evidence, why is it important, and what do we ultimately do next?

Review Of Reference Librarianship & Justice: History, Practice & Praxis, Julie M. Porterfield Feb 2020

Review Of Reference Librarianship & Justice: History, Practice & Praxis, Julie M. Porterfield

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Reference Librarianship & Justice: History, Practice & Praxis exemplifies its call for an emphasis on social justice and shared ways of knowing in reference librarianship by incorporating contributors with diverse experiences with reference librarianship, as well as maintaining an inclusive definition of reference librarianship and a flexible organizational structure. The authors represent the experiences of reference services in academic, public, and prison libraries. Additionally, of particular interest for this journal’s readership, there is the inclusion of archives and museums. As a result, a broad definition of the work and responsibilities associated with reference librarianship takes shape in the volume, which …

The Business Of Peace: Understanding Corporate Contributions To Conflict Management, Molly M. Melin Feb 2020

The Business Of Peace: Understanding Corporate Contributions To Conflict Management, Molly M. Melin

Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Do private firms act beyond “business as usual” and proactively build peace? Firms are largely absent from the conflict management literature, despite studies suggesting their importance. What conditions encourage firms to actively prevent or resolve violent conflict? Are such actions interdependent with ongoing international conflict prevention and management efforts? I argue international efforts encourage corporate conflict management-related activities since conflict management interdependencies can decrease the costs of conflict management, while increasing the benefits and success of their efforts. In addition, firms respond to gaps in governance and instability, especially when they are norm entrepreneurs or their reputation is threatened. I …

The Power Of A Voice, Anonymous Feb 2020

The Power Of A Voice, Anonymous

SURGE

**Trigger warning: sexual assault

I was a freshman in college and I became a ‘juvenile victim’. I became an article online and the talk of a bored group of people thinking of how crazy life is. I became comments on Facebook and I became comments in a courtroom. In all that I became, I was nameless, faceless, voiceless. That was what got to me most. I was voiceless in the process as much as I was when he stood over me, and all I could ask was, when did my voice stop mattering? [excerpt]

Nurse Rock Microclimates Significantly Buffer Exposure To Freezing T Temperature And Moderate Summer Temperature, Joshua L. Conver, Elliott Yarwood, Lucas D. Hetherington, Don E. Swann Feb 2020

Nurse Rock Microclimates Significantly Buffer Exposure To Freezing T Temperature And Moderate Summer Temperature, Joshua L. Conver, Elliott Yarwood, Lucas D. Hetherington, Don E. Swann

United States National Park Service: Publications

Nurse tree canopies mitigate exposure to freezing temperatures that could result in injury or mortality to the saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). Abiotic objects have been hypothesized to provide similar beneficial microclimates. We used data loggers at 11 nurse rock sites to record daily daytime summer maximum and winter nighttime minimum temperatures at Saguaro National Park, Arizona, to examine the effectiveness of rocks to moderate seasonal temperature extremes in the microclimate. Temperatures at rock sites averaged 2 °C warmer than exposed open control sites in winter. We found that the efficiency of rocks to act as insulators significantly increased as temperature …

Effects Of Culling White-Tailed Deer On Tree Regeneration And Microstegium Vimineum, An Invasive Grass, John Paul Schmit, Elizabeth R. Matthews, Andrejs Brolis Feb 2020

Effects Of Culling White-Tailed Deer On Tree Regeneration And Microstegium Vimineum, An Invasive Grass, John Paul Schmit, Elizabeth R. Matthews, Andrejs Brolis

United States National Park Service: Publications

Reduction of forest regeneration due to overbrowsing by white-tailed deer is a growing concern for land managers. Abundant deer can impede forest regeneration through direct predation on tree seedlings. Additionally high deer density can facilitate the establishment of a dense understory of browse tolerant plant species that shades seedlings and persists even in the absence of deer. In response to these challenges, land managers have sought to reduce deer herds to restore tree regeneration, but few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of this management. Our study took place in Catoctin Mountain Park, a US National Park Service unit with a …

African Naked Mole-Rat Colony Behavior Based On Whole Colony Radio Frequency Identification (Colony Tt-2, April 2015), Dan Mccloskey, Michael E. Kress

Publications and Research

This file contains Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) data for routine activity of members of the TT-2 colony during a 26 day period in April 2015. The data are organized into a state matrix where the last known location for each of the 49 animals in the colony is listed in each row. A new row means that the raw data file updated the location of one animal. The leftmost column gives the date and time of the event, the headers for the other 49 columns give the RFID code for each of the animals in the colony. Animals demonstrated to …

Regression When There Are Two Covariates: Some Practical Reasons For Considering Quantile Grids, Rand Wilcox Feb 2020

Regression When There Are Two Covariates: Some Practical Reasons For Considering Quantile Grids, Rand Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

When dealing with the association between some random variable and two covariates, extensive experience with smoothers indicates that often a linear model poorly reflects the nature of the association. A simple approach via quantile grids that reflects the nature of the association is given. The two main goals are to illustrate this approach can make a practical difference, and to describe R functions for applying it. Included are comments on dealing with more than two covariates.

The Influence Of Personality And Losses On Search In Decisions From Experience, Michael Mordechai Hay Feb 2020

The Influence Of Personality And Losses On Search In Decisions From Experience, Michael Mordechai Hay

LSU Master's Theses

Research in decision making has focused increasing attention on understanding search behavior without focusing on how individual differences might influence people’s search behavior. To increase our understanding of this topic, the present study examined how personality predicted the amount of search an individual engages in before making a risky decision. It was hypothesized that conscientiousness would be a positive predictor of search behavior and would emerge as an even stronger predictor of search behavior when choosing between options with negative outcomes. It was also hypothesized that neuroticism would be a negative predictor of search behavior and that individuals with higher …

Bivariate Analogs Of The Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney Test And The Patel–Hoel Method For Interactions, Rand Wilcox Feb 2020

Bivariate Analogs Of The Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney Test And The Patel–Hoel Method For Interactions, Rand Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A fundamental way of characterizing how two independent compares compare is in terms of the probability that a randomly sampled observation from the first group is less than a randomly sampled observation from the second group. The paper suggests a bivariate analog and investigates methods for computing confidence intervals. An interaction for a two-by-two design is investigated as well.

Reflections From Five Years Of Research On Fgm/C, Lori S. Ashford, Reshma Naik, Charlotte Greenbaum

Reproductive Health

From 2015 to 2019, the Evidence to End FGM/C research consortium took a fresh approach to examining the longstanding practice of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). The African-led program developed innovative research methods and uncovered new evidence about the practice and how it is changing—focusing on families and communities, and health and legal systems. This report documents the consortium’s research methods, the key lessons learned, capacity strengthening efforts, enhanced advocacy for research uptake, and recommendations. The research sheds light on key areas for future investments that would ensure that FGM/C policies and programs are informed by rigorous evidence. The recommendations stem …
