Heterogeneous Impacts On Layoffs Of Changes In Brazilian Unemployment Insurance Eligibility Rules, Túlio Cravo, Christopher J. O'Leary, Ana Cristina Sierra, Leandro Justino Veloso

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper is based on the first use of program administrative data from Brazil’s unemployment insurance (UI) program to assess the impact of changes in UI eligibility criteria on layoff probabilities. We exploit exogenous program changes introduced by executive and legislative changes in 2015 to estimate impacts while accounting for the number of prior UI benefit requests. We estimate that changes in UI eligibility criteria had heterogeneous impacts distinguished by the number of prior benefit requests. We show that the 2015 changes in UI eligibility rules reduced layoffs and find evidence that the changes reduced collusion between workers and employers …

Supplemental Material For: A Model-Based Approach To The Tempo Of “Collapse”: The Case Of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Robert J. Dinapoli, Timothy M. Reith, Carl P. Lipo, Terry L. Hunt Feb 2020

Supplemental Material For: A Model-Based Approach To The Tempo Of “Collapse”: The Case Of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Robert J. Dinapoli, Timothy M. Reith, Carl P. Lipo, Terry L. Hunt

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile) presents a quintessential case where the tempo of investment in monumentality is central to debates regarding societal collapse, with the common narrative positing that statue platform (ahu) construction ceased sometime around AD 1600 following an ecological, cultural, and demographic catastrophe. This narrative remains especially popular in fields outside archaeology that treat collapse as historical fact and use Rapa Nui as a model for collapse more generally. Resolving the tempo of “collapse” events, however, is often fraught with ambiguity given a lack of formal modeling, uncritical use of radiocarbon estimates, and inattention to information embedded in …

The Good Place And The Good Life, Rachel Robinson-Greene Feb 2020

The Good Place And The Good Life, Rachel Robinson-Greene

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Students all across the country have recently found new motivation to be interested in philosophy—NBC’s The Good Place, which aired its final episode on January 30, 2020. The series explicitly engages with philosophy through the storyline of one of the central characters—Chidi Adagonye—who was, in life, a philosophy professor. In the afterlife, Chidi teaches ethics to a group of wayward souls who, as the show progresses, become the best of friends. Chidi provides a useful narrative vehicle for direct discussion of philosophy. Even in the absence of Chidi’s philosophical explanations, the show is inherently philosophical. It demonstrates that, rather than …

An Assessment Of Mental Wellbeing And Health-Related Quality Of Life Among Youth Living In Central Mexico, Steven Hoffman, Heidi Adams Rueda, Stefan Chase

Social Work Faculty Publications

The current state of adolescent mental health and wellbeing in Mexico constitutes a serious public health concern. In an effort to better understand the potential impact this crisis is having on youth in Central Mexico, we designed a study to assess the connection between Mental Wellbeing and Health-related Quality of Life among a sample of children in junior high school. Descriptive statistics suggest that 22.5% of our sample was “at-risk” of poor health-related quality of life, with 19.8% at risk within the physical subscale and 24.3% at risk within the psychosocial subscale. Regression analyses showed that mental wellbeing scores significantly …

Making Space For Mothering: Collaboration As Feminist Practice, Julie Searcy, Angela N. Castañeda Feb 2020

Making Space For Mothering: Collaboration As Feminist Practice, Julie Searcy, Angela N. Castañeda

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Our collaborative practice spans nearly a decade working together on data collection, writing, presentations, and publications as we’ve explored the intimate care that doulas provide to women in labor. In this essay, we use intimate labor as both a practice and a theoretical frame to think of collaboration as a feminist project that recognizes the expertise gathered from mothering and makes space for it in academia. Eileen Boris and Rhacel Salazar Parreñas (2010, 7) define intimate labor as “work that involves embodied and affective interactions in the service of social reproduction,” and suggest that it requires “bodily or emotional closeness, …

The Integration Of Transformation: Extending Campbell’S Monomyth, Susan L. Ross Feb 2020

The Integration Of Transformation: Extending Campbell’S Monomyth, Susan L. Ross

Heroism Science

Referring to Campbell’s lectures and the outcomes of one study about the integration of transformation, this paper argues that the hero’s journey (and transformation) is not accomplished unless the life-changing experience is psychospiritually integrated into daily life. Accordingly, Campbell contradicts his theory by suggesting that the monomyth finishes when (and if) the initiate, who has returned home, integrates by successfully finding a way to share the boon. The research clarifies that integrating involves nine phases and in combination, the hero-making process of transformation and integration follow a figure-8 pattern; an upper transformative and masculine-dominated hero’s journey and lower integrative feminine-dominated …

New Perspectives On Catholic And Democratic Voting Behavior Regarding Constitutional Same-Sex Marriage Bans, Tré Martinez-Kukowski Feb 2020

New Perspectives On Catholic And Democratic Voting Behavior Regarding Constitutional Same-Sex Marriage Bans, Tré Martinez-Kukowski

Augsburg Honors Review

In the United States, constitutional same-sex marriage bans were a prominent political phenomenon in state and national politics for most of the 2000s, and were ballot items as recently as 2012. Traditionally, this has been addressed as it correlates to Republican party politics and the evangelical Protestant voting bloc, with some attention paid to the opposition to these measures by Democrats. In addition, Catholic voting is viewed as essentially a barometer of the general electorate, not only on this issue but on all issues other than reproductive rights. However, most of this research came out in response to the wave …

The Glass Is Always Half Empty: Anm Analysis Of The Negative Worldviews For Those With Atxiety And Depression, Bradley Marcy Feb 2020

The Glass Is Always Half Empty: Anm Analysis Of The Negative Worldviews For Those With Atxiety And Depression, Bradley Marcy

Augsburg Honors Review

Since it was first proposed by Leon Festinger in the 1950s, cognitive dissonance theory has been the subject of many research papers. Explorations have expanded the theory to provide further insight into the conditions required for this phenomenon to occur, how it can be observed, and how it affects judgment. Cognitive dissonance has also proved useful in creating new ways to treat various mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety. The success of this type of therapy implies that there may be a stronger connection between these two topics that are often discussed apart from each other. This paper will …

Confined Identity: Reexamining Total Institutions, Amber Kalina Feb 2020

Confined Identity: Reexamining Total Institutions, Amber Kalina

Augsburg Honors Review

Social life has great impact on the identity formation of groups and individuals. It is from society that people receive validation for the identities they wish to convey. Typically, individuals have freedom to adopt multiple identities, for different social contexts demand different behaviors. However, there are some places where individuals are restricted to one common identity by authorities. Erving Goffman defines such a location as a total institution. Although Goffman's theory adequately describes the circumstances in the asylum he observed, it is not as applicable to other cases that should theoretically match Goffman's description. This article will address the problem …

The Heterogeneity And Wide Range Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Nikki Johnson Feb 2020

The Heterogeneity And Wide Range Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Nikki Johnson

Augsburg Honors Review

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is one of the most prevalent childhood neurological disorders in the US (Pinel et a1.,2011). Individuals with this disorder experience a varying degree of lower capacity for social interaction and communication. There are two important characteristics of ASD, its heterogeneity and its range of disorders on a wide spectrum, which must be kept in mind as research is performed on this topic. This complexity of ASD and its large amount of individual variation, based on the intensity, behaviors, and types of disorders a person has, makes it difficult to uncover the pathophysiology of these neurological disorders. …

The Influence Of Rap In The Arab Spring, Samantha Cantrall Feb 2020

The Influence Of Rap In The Arab Spring, Samantha Cantrall

Augsburg Honors Review

Throughout history, music has been influential in social, religious, and political disputes. In the early 21st century, change in the established order can be found in expressing the need for reform halfway around the world in the Middle East's Arab Spring. Rap artists such as El General (Tunisia), GAB (Libya), and Omar Offendum (Syria) used their talents to both spark and encourage protestors during the early days of the Middle Eastern protests that began in late 2010; these protests have since been coined "The Arab Spring." The energy that could have been used to wield guns and bombs was instead …

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Implicates Ras Pathways In The Genetic Architecture Of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Jessica A. Kaczorowski, Taylor Smith, Amanda M. Shrewsbury, Leah R. Thomas, Valerie S. Knopik, Maria T. Acosta Feb 2020

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Implicates Ras Pathways In The Genetic Architecture Of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Jessica A. Kaczorowski, Taylor Smith, Amanda M. Shrewsbury, Leah R. Thomas, Valerie S. Knopik, Maria T. Acosta

Psychology and Child Development

The genetic architecture of neurodevelopmental disorders is largely polygenic, non-specific, and pleiotropic. This complex genetic architecture makes the search for specific etiological mechanisms that contribute to neurodevelopmental risk more challenging. Monogenic disorders provide an opportunity to focus in on how well-articulated signaling pathways contribute to risk for neurodevelopmental outcomes. This paper will focus on neurofbromatosis type 1 (NF1), a rare monogenic disorder that is associated with varied neurodevelopmental outcomes. Specifically, this paper will provide a brief overview of NF1 and its phenotypic associations with autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and specific learning disorders, describe how variation within the NF1 gene …

Striatum-Mediated Deficits In Stimulus-Response Learning And Decision-Making In Ocd, Nole M. Hiebert, Marc R. Lawrence, Hooman Ganjavi, Mark Watling, Adrian M. Owen, Ken N. Seergobin, Penny A. Macdonald

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

© Copyright © 2020 Hiebert, Lawrence, Ganjavi, Watling, Owen, Seergobin and MacDonald. Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a prevalent psychiatric disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions. Studies investigating symptomatology and cognitive deficits in OCD frequently implicate the striatum. The aim of this study was to explore striatum-mediated cognitive deficits in patients with OCD as they complete a stimulus-response learning task previously shown to differentially rely on the dorsal (DS) and ventral striatum (VS). We hypothesized that patients with OCD will show both impaired decision-making and learning, coupled with reduced task-relevant activity in DS and VS, respectively, compared to healthy controls. …
