Sibling Violence: The Missing Piece In Family Violence Policy, Nathan H. Perkins, Susan F. Grossman Jan 2020

Sibling Violence: The Missing Piece In Family Violence Policy, Nathan H. Perkins, Susan F. Grossman

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Social work has played an integral role in the conceptualization and implementation of policy aimed at prevention and intervention of various forms of family violence. Seminal federal policies to address child abuse and neglect (Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act), elder abuse (Elder Justice and Older Americans Acts), and intimate partner violence (Violence Against Women and Family Violence Prevention and Services Acts) all focus on specific types of violence in the family. To date, however, there are no federal policies specifically addressing physical and/or emotional sibling violence (Perkins, Coles, & O’Connor, 2017; Perkins & O’Connor, 2016). This article examines the …

Comparison Of 2018 And 2019 Market Facilitation Program Payments For Nebraska Producers, Anil Giri, Wesley Peterson, Sankalp Sharma

Cornhusker Economics

In a previous issue of Cornhusker Economics ( October 3, 2018, available at https://agecon.unl.edu/ cornhusker-economics/2018/market-facilitationprogram) we reviewed the sequence of events surrounding the trade war between the United States and China, and, in particular, the response of the Trump administration to the retaliatory tariffs imposed by China on soybeans and other agricultural commodities. The Market Facilitation Program (MFP) has been the main mechanism for compensating farmers for losses associated with the trade war. In the past year, there have been several important changes related to these events:

1. On January 15, 2020, the first phase of a trade deal between …

Childhood Adversity, Mental Health, And The Perpetration Of Physical Violence In The Adult Intimate Relationships Of Women Prisoners: A Life Course Approach, Melissa S. Jones, Stephanie W. Burge, Susan F. Sharp, David A. Mcleod Jan 2020

Childhood Adversity, Mental Health, And The Perpetration Of Physical Violence In The Adult Intimate Relationships Of Women Prisoners: A Life Course Approach, Melissa S. Jones, Stephanie W. Burge, Susan F. Sharp, David A. Mcleod

Faculty Publications

Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common, with nearly two-thirds of adult samples reporting exposure to at least one and one-quarter reporting exposure to three or more distinct types of ACEs. ACEs have been linked to various negative outcomes across the life course, including mental health problems, and the perpetration of physical violence in intimate relationships. However, little is known about the relationships between ACEs, PTSD symptomology, and use of physical violence against an adult intimate partner among incarcerated women.

Objective: The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships between ACEs, PTSD symptoms, and the perpetration of the …

An Illustrated Case For Unemployment Insurance Reform, Christopher J. O'Leary, Stephen A. Wandner Jan 2020

An Illustrated Case For Unemployment Insurance Reform, Christopher J. O'Leary, Stephen A. Wandner

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We present a graphic case for unemployment insurance (UI) program reform. Through a series of illustrations summarizing historical trends, we show how the UI system has diverged from its intended purposes. Our figures show the decline of the program in addressing its essential aims of paying adequate unemployment compensation during involuntary unemployment and providing reemployment services. We illustrate the big differences in UI programs that have emerged because of the broad discretion afforded states to determine benefit generosity. We also illustrate declines in the financial means for providing benefits and reemployment services and a widening divergence among states in the …

Noise Over Signal: Phonography Culture As Participatory, Patrick Williams, Jason Luther Jan 2020

Noise Over Signal: Phonography Culture As Participatory, Patrick Williams, Jason Luther

Libraries' and Librarians' Publications

While participatory culture has been of special interest to scholars for nearly three decades, much of the focus has centered on digitally networked contexts. The digital age has indeed transformed our approaches to listening to music and how we operate as fans of music; these approaches can weave together the new and the old, and are enacted among a variety of spaces, objects, and relationships. We explore how the re-emergence of one such object in the digital age — the LP — has produced social arrangements that perhaps excavate older listening practices but do so in ways that have been …

Regional Forest Volume Estimation By Expanding Lidar Samples Using Multi-Sensor Satellite Data, Bo Xie, Chunxiang Cao, Min Xu, Barjeece Bashir, Ramesh P. Singh, Zhibin Huang, Xiaojuan Lin

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Accurate information regarding forest volume plays an important role in estimating afforestation, timber harvesting, and forest ecological services. Traditionally, operations on forest growing stock volume using field measurements are labor-intensive and time-consuming. Recently, remote sensing technology has emerged as a time-cost efficient method for forest inventory. In the present study, we have adopted three procedures, including samples expanding, feature selection, and results generation and evaluation. Extrapolating the samples from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scanning is the most important step in satisfying the requirement of sample size for nonparametric methods operation and result in accuracy improvement. Besides, mean decrease Gini …

Is Geographical Remoteness An Economic Disadvantage?, Jiaxuan Lu Jan 2020

Is Geographical Remoteness An Economic Disadvantage?, Jiaxuan Lu

Undergraduate Economic Review

Is the geographical location of a country deterministic to its level of economic development? Although economic geographers have been searching the answers to this question for decades, incongruities between different opinions still exist. This paper takes both theoretical and empirical approaches to provide a systematic answer to this question. Firstly, this paper uses industry-level gravity model of international trade to demonstrate that not all countries are negatively affected by geographical remoteness. Secondly, it employs a panel data of 83 countries from 2000 to 2017 and substantiates that while geographical remoteness decreases income levels and trade balances in OECD countries, it …

Conceal, Don't Feel: Gender Differences In Implicit And Explicit Expressions Of Emotions, Sara Carlton, Abbey Harrison, Sydney Honoré, Leilani B. Goodmon Jan 2020

Conceal, Don't Feel: Gender Differences In Implicit And Explicit Expressions Of Emotions, Sara Carlton, Abbey Harrison, Sydney Honoré, Leilani B. Goodmon

Modern Psychological Studies

Previous studies revealed that gender-role conforming men rated themselves lower on emotional scales (Etherton, Lawson, & Graham, 2014) and expressed emotion less freely than women in experimental situations (Brody, Lovas, & Hay, 1995). Further, men with high gender-role stress indicated fear of losing control over emotions (Jakupcak, 2003). The purpose of the current study was to explore if the physiological response to emotional suppression is similar to that associated with fear and anxiety. Gender-role conforming men and women experienced fearful and emotional stimuli. Experimenters recorded explicit and implicit reactions before and after exposure. Results showed females experienced greater changes in …

Effects Of Emotion On Binge-Watching, Victoria Anozie Jan 2020

Effects Of Emotion On Binge-Watching, Victoria Anozie

Modern Psychological Studies

Previous studies have shown that binge-watching produces emotional effects. The current study examined whether there was an association between the frequency of binge-watching and negative and positive emotions. A survey was administered to 66 participants recruited from a Southern private institution. A multiple regression and correlation analysis were run on the data. Results from the analysis were significant, confirming our hypothesis that people who binge-watched more experienced negative emotions such as loss of control and dependency, and people who binge-watched less experienced more positive emotions. The implications do not show that binge-watching effects psychosocial outcomes. Suggestions for future research are …

Evaluation Of Antecedent Ambiguity On Identification And Categorization Of Behavior In Lunar-Effects Research, Brenda M. Gabbert, Mychal A. Machado Jan 2020

Evaluation Of Antecedent Ambiguity On Identification And Categorization Of Behavior In Lunar-Effects Research, Brenda M. Gabbert, Mychal A. Machado

Modern Psychological Studies

We created an online survey to determine the degree to which 114 participants could correctly identify and categorize scripted visual examples of typical and atypical behavior when the antecedent preceding those behaviors was not present. We also asked participants to determine whether our visual examples of behavior occurred in the presence of a full moon, and subsequently evaluated these data in the context of participant’s self-reported belief in lunar-effects. Our results show the absence of an antecedent event influenced some participants’ identification and categorization accuracy scores, and that participants with a prior belief in lunar effects were more likely to …

Attachment To God As A Function Of Mortality Salience And Intrinsic Religiosity, Jill Hoffman, Robert B. Arrowood, Maddie Weinstock, Arielle Cenin, Cathy R. Cox Jan 2020

Attachment To God As A Function Of Mortality Salience And Intrinsic Religiosity, Jill Hoffman, Robert B. Arrowood, Maddie Weinstock, Arielle Cenin, Cathy R. Cox

Modern Psychological Studies

The present study examined the association between intrinsic religiosity and attachment to God following mortality salience. Participants (N = 158) consisted of Christian individuals who were asked to complete the Religious Orientation Scale (Allport & Ross, 1967) as a measure of intrinsic religiosity, a word search puzzle to prime either death-related or neutral words, and the Attachment to God Inventory (Beck & McDonald, 2004). A moderated regression found a significant interaction between MS and intrinsic religiosity on avoidant but not anxious attachment to God. Specifically, following reminders of death, low intrinsic individuals were more avoidant toward God compared to high …

Affective Reactions Towards Physically Disabled Individuals In Private And Public Conditions, Katherine Shaw, Sherri Pataki Jan 2020

Affective Reactions Towards Physically Disabled Individuals In Private And Public Conditions, Katherine Shaw, Sherri Pataki

Modern Psychological Studies

This research examined people’s emotional reactions to being assigned to work with an individual with a physical disability. Forty-seven undergraduate students were randomly assigned to a disability versus non-disability condition and a public versus private condition. All participants were asked to report their current moods before a supposed upcoming interaction related to teamwork. We predicted participants would report more negative emotions in the disability condition and privately in comparison to publicly. Participants reported more irritability when they believed the person they would be working with was disabled. Participants concealed feelings of irritability, nervousness, and discomfort regardless of disability. These findings …

Love, Language, And Linear Algebra: Linguistic Modeling Of Personality And Mate Preference, Caleb Z. Marshall, Erin M. Buchanan, Melissa Duncan Fallone Jan 2020

Love, Language, And Linear Algebra: Linguistic Modeling Of Personality And Mate Preference, Caleb Z. Marshall, Erin M. Buchanan, Melissa Duncan Fallone

Modern Psychological Studies

This study utilized Latent Semantic Analysis to determine whether similarities in personality predicted similarities in responses to a romantic writing prompt (Landauer & Dumais, 1997). From participants’ writing samples, we calculated thematic cosines (a measure of relatedness) between each male and female participant. Participants also completed the Big Five Personality Questionnaire Short Form (Morizet, 2014). Extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness were related to cosines, which suggested small-medium relationships from personality traits to written responses. This relationship was consistent with previous studies; therefore, Latent Semantic Analysis may be useful in quantifying mate preference, especially when alongside traditional survey methods. We conclude with …

Predictors Of Sleep Quality: Depression, Anxiety, And Sleep Self-Efficacy, Rayanna Johnson 3592665, Ei E. Hlaing

Modern Psychological Studies

The objective of the current study was to examine the relationship between depression, anxiety, sleep self-efficacy, and sleep quality among college students by using both objective measures and self-reported data. Participants included 27 undergraduate students from a small liberal arts college who wore ActiGraph wristbands for a period of seven nights. Participants also completed anxiety, depression, sleep self-efficacy, and subjective sleep quality scales. Results indicated that higher sleep self-efficacy scores were associated with lower anxiety and depression scores. Higher subjective sleep quality was associated with higher sleep self-efficacy scores and lower depression and anxiety scores. This study supports the need …

Size Matters: The Values Behind Basque Food, Font And Semiotics, Kerri Lesh Jan 2020

Size Matters: The Values Behind Basque Food, Font And Semiotics, Kerri Lesh

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

Text production indexes a set of values as semiotics are utilized to market gastronomic products. These values are referenced through the language used, various font styles and sizes, and the food being promoted. The Basque Country has become a “Culinary nation,” world-renowned for its unique culture and gastronomy. This paper looks at how semiotics are used to create value in marketing locally-made wine and cider. A ubiquitously seen Basque font is used for both cider and wine to reference traditional components of Basque culture, while font size on Rioja Alavesa wine labels stresses the distinction between neighboring regions. The use …

Majority Of Rural Residents Compost Food Waste: Policy And Waste Management Implications For Rural Regions, Meredith T. Niles Jan 2020

Majority Of Rural Residents Compost Food Waste: Policy And Waste Management Implications For Rural Regions, Meredith T. Niles

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Faculty Publications

A growing number of municipalities and states are implementing household food waste diversion efforts such as curbside compost programs, though these programs present challenges for participation and implementation. While many food waste diversion programs are occurring in densely populated regions, understanding food waste management in rural regions is less studied. This research examines the food waste perceptions and current and future food waste management behaviors of residents in Vermont, one of the most rural U.S. states, through a representative telephone survey of Vermont residents (n = 583) in 2018. The findings suggest 55% of residents support banning food waste from …

Prenatal Care For Undocumented Immigrants: Implications For Policy, Practice, And Ethics, Rachel Fabi

Population Health Research Brief Series

Nearly 250,000 babies are born each year to undocumented immigrant parents in the U.S. These babies are U.S. citizens, but undocumented immigrants are ineligible for most public insurance, making it difficult for them to access prenatal care. This research brief describes restrictive policies related to prenatal care for undocumented immigrants and discusses how these policies affect health care providers and the care they are able to offer pregnant immigrant women.

A Functional Analysis Of Physical Activity In Children With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Alexandra Knerr Jan 2020

A Functional Analysis Of Physical Activity In Children With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Alexandra Knerr

Thesis Projects

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends children get 60 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day, but few children with intellectual and developmental disabilities meet these guidelines. Determining the function of physical activity may lead to more effective interventions for increasing physical activity levels in these children. The present study adapted the methods of Larson, Normand, Morley, and Miller (2014) to conduct a functional analysis of physical activity in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For two subjects, rates of physical activity were measured using pedometers in five conditions: Verbal attention, adult interaction, music, ignore, and control. …
