The Role Of Human Capital In The Structural Change Process, Michele Aparecida Nepomuceno Pinto, Edinaldo Tebaldi, Marina Silva Da Cunha
Economics Faculty Journal Articles
The main of this paper is to verify if human capital is an important determinant of structural change in the different sectors of the economy and if it can accelerate the speed of this structural transformation. This paper contributes to the literature once it develops an empirical test of the model proposed by Li et al. (2019) and it uses the generalized method of moments (GMM) which considers the problem of endogeneity found in human capital variables, it also uses two proxies for human capital and structural change in order to verify whether or not they affect the variable of …

The Altar Of National Prosperity: Extractivism And Sacrifice Zones In Argentine Patagonia, Jonathan Gomez-Pereira
Anthropology Department Honors Papers
The advances in extractive technologies in the 21st century has led to the creation of a new powerful global actor, the Multinational. These multinationals have no allegiance to a state, as earlier forms of capitalism did, rather they are ventures in the industries of agribusiness and mining that operate in countries throughout Latin America. These global actors are able to effectively dominate economies through the reprimarization of the countries that host them. Countries like Argentina have welcomed multinationals like Monsanto and Patagonia Gold into their territories, which has proven to be a detriment to the communities and environments in which …

Dear Reader, When we think of the archetype superhero, we often conjure up an image of some perfect, impenetrable being. As humans, the realities we face are seldom that simple. As I reflected on my experiences in journalism thus far, I kept coming back to what I felt made stories both important and compelling – the people at the heart of it all. No matter the topic, there is something inherently captivating about the human experience in that it always drives a component of the article. Otherwise, what would compel us to care? And so, I chose the theme “Superhuman”, …

#Iftheygunnedmedown: A Narrative Analysis Of News Media Coverage, Zoe Deal
Occam's Razor
This study examines the 2014 media coverage of #IfTheyGunnedMeDown, an early example of hashtag activism driven by the social media sub-community Black Twitter in response to the murder of a Black teenager, Michael Brown, Jr., by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Reacting to national reporting on the event, #IfTheyGunnedMeDown criticized the mainstream media for promoting racially prejudiced representations of Brown and utilized this example to critique two historical patterns in American news coverage: the pattern of stereotyping Black Americans as violent to justify police brutality and the pattern of representing journalism informed by a hegemonically white perspective …
The Effects Of The Wind Farms On The Indigenous Zapotec Community Of The Isthmus Of Tehuantepec, Mexico, Nichole Vargas
The Effects Of The Wind Farms On The Indigenous Zapotec Community Of The Isthmus Of Tehuantepec, Mexico, Nichole Vargas
Occam's Razor
This qualitative case study examines the effects of private sector-led wind farm development on the Indigenous Zapotec community in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region of Mexico. As a location with one of the highest wind potentials in the world, the Isthmus has, over the past twenty-five years, increasingly attracted the attention of international companies seeking to build and profit from massive wind farm installations. The Zapotecs of the Isthmus have fought back against this private development, claiming that their way of life, land rights, and sovereignty are threatened by the physical and ecological effects of the wind farms and by …

The Hero Industry: Spectacular Pacification In The Era Of Media Interactivity, Braden Timss
Occam's Razor
In Ben Fountain’s 2012 novel, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, the titular US soldier and the Bravo squad become canonized Iraq War heroes when their rescue attempt is captured on digital video. In recognition of their bravery, their tour of duty is halted for an American media stint that culminates in their participation during the 2004 Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving halftime show. This celebratory return allows the proud American public to interact with the heroes from the video, subsumed, however they may be, by the militarized media spectacle and abstracted into icons of precious, simplified meaning. Commodities like War Hero …

Barriers and Facilitators to Adaptive Sports on College Campuses by Lisa Osadchuk and Sean Bruna
This research examines scholarly literature regarding attitudes and behaviors related to adaptive sporting events. A literature review was conducted in anthropology, disability studies, and other databases using key terms such as disability, higher education, and adaptive sports. Articles were reviewed and categorized into three areas: anthropological perspectives, institutional challenges, and participant experiences. This review sheds new light into how adaptive sports can create inclusion and integration in the postsecondary environment for students with disabilities, while also highlighting changing attitudes of those students from their peers, …

The graduate school application is a time consuming, yet important, process that can often be complicated for students. However, this process is made even more complicated for international students who often face extra steps and other obstacles when applying to graduate programs in the US. Following my own experience of applying to a master's program as an international student, I set out to further explore how international students experienced and navigated this process. This research project explored the graduate school application process through the experiences of international students that were shared in testimonios through platicas, or open and friendly conversations. …
Development And Validation Of The Perinatal Mental Health Literacy Scale Among Latinas, Irma Y. Torres-Catanach
Development And Validation Of The Perinatal Mental Health Literacy Scale Among Latinas, Irma Y. Torres-Catanach
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Psychiatric disorders in pregnancy and in the first year after childbirth are considered a significant health complication of the perinatal period (O'Hara & Wisner, 2014). The prevalence of perinatal mood disorders has been shown to be higher among women from racial/ethnic minority groups (Gavin et al., 2011; Melville et al., 2010). As the largest racial/ethnic minority group in the U.S., Latinas are disproportionately affected by these disparities. Despite the volume of research examining the prevalence of and treatment for perinatal psychiatric disorders, there is a dearth of knowledge focused on educational approaches that aim to reduce perinatal mental health disparities. …

Micro-Level Movements Matter is a transnational digital study which explores audience and persuasion, identity performances and performative agency through an examination of Big Data gathered from Twitter's comprehensive historical archives collected from during the 2011 Egyptian revolution. In Egypt, the demonstrator's use of social media was extraordinarily savvy and persuasive-richly saturated in rhetorical devices effectively employed to appeal to wide swath of audiences. Overtime participatory discourse on social media engaged new ideas and dissenting socio-political thoughts, crafted shifting identities, refashioned new possibilities and futures community wide, and resulted in a remarkably successful large scale mobilization campaign. Open Access Theses & Dissertations
May 1972, 4,000 garment workers at Farah Manufacturing Company in El Paso went out on strike for the right to be represented by a union. The strike against Farah was the first major social movement in the El Paso area in modern times. Over 80% of the striking workers were Latina. The female employees at Farah were at the forefront of the Chicana feminist movement. The labor battle at Farah proves the organic link between Chicana feminism and class struggle. The Farah strike caused a new family dynamic to rise from the ashes of the traditional Mexican household. Using Burke's …

Who Is Willing To Speak Up And Why? Examining Individual And Organizational Predictors Of Employee Voice Behavior In Higher Education Institutions, Jessie Socorro Arellano
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Employee voice behavior is central to the effectiveness, the development, and the adaptability of organizations to their environments. However, there is currently limited organizational research and knowledge on the factors that influence employee voice behaviors, especially in the context of higher education institutions. As such, the purpose of this study is to examine the predictors of employee voice behaviors in institutions of higher education. Specifically, this study examines the impact of key individual and organizational factors such as alumni status, organizational commitment, work motivation, communication climate, and organizational politics on employees' expression of promotive and prohibitive voice in higher education …

Border Crossing On Sacred Grounds: An Indigenized Decolonized Educational Research Paradigm For Use In Contemporary Globalized Schooling Systems, Estella Valles
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Presented in this work is an adapted quantitative research paradigm for use in the field of education, specifically designed for work with Indigenous/marginalized populations coined "Diachronic Research Methodology" (DRM). The model is grounded in a post-positivist, decolonization-model, that is embedded in feminist and critical race theory. DRM is presented as a counter-approach to the traditional empiricist, research methods; a process which, historically, has allowed for a limited and biased understanding of Indigenous/marginalized populations. DRM challenges Western epistemologies and worldviews which have promoted the idea of one-grand-narrative for all humans, a view argued as beyond problematic and unethical, particularly for Indigenous …

This case study describes an academic library search committee's decision-making, practice, and assessment of using performance-based interviews as part of a national search for lecturer-level positions with a primary focus of reference and research services and minimal expectations of teaching information literacy in the classroom. The search committee determined performance-based interviews were successful in establishing candidates’ depth of skill in simulated reference transactions. The authors recommend incorporating an element of unscripted job simulation to employment interviews in libraries of all types.

Diaries have been used to obtain national and subnational estimates of household food waste (HHFW) in several countries. Furthermore, diaries have been proposed as a method for tracking progress towards goals that include HHFW reduction. However, multiple studies have suggested diaries substantially underestimate HHFW. This paper collates and analyses data from five studies in which diary estimates of HHFW can be directly compared to other, more accurate estimates from waste compositional analysis (WCA). This analysis finds that all diary estimates for HHFW were lower than the corresponding WCA estimates, with the degree of underestimation ranging from 7% to 40%. Four …
