The Emotions Of Science: Using Social Media To Gauge Public Emotions Toward Research Topics, Cole C. Freeman Jan 2020

The Emotions Of Science: Using Social Media To Gauge Public Emotions Toward Research Topics, Cole C. Freeman

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Online and in the real world, communities are bonded together by emotional consensus around core issues. Emotional responses to scientific findings often play a pivotal role in these core issues. When there is too much diversity of opinion on topics of science, emotions flare up and give rise to conflict. This conflict threatens positive outcomes for research. Emotions have the power to shape how people process new information. They can color the public's understanding of science, motivate policy positions, even change lives. And yet little work has been done to evaluate the public's emotional response to science using quantitative methods. …

In The Know Or Out Of The Loop: Examining The Impact Of (Not) Knowing High Potential Designation, Elizabeth A. Hanrahan

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The cultivation and development of high potential employees has been a main focus of most talent management sectors of organizations, regardless of field or context. While practitioners have been moving in this space for quite a while, academicians are only recently starting to conduct investigations on high potential employees. There are many critical aspects of best in class high potential programs – the accurate identification of high potential employees being one of the first pivotal steps.

High potential identification can be tricky for several reasons: the very definition of potential is oftentimes unclear, traditional selection decisions made for high potential …

An Examination Of Quantity And Quality Of Maternal Consulting Predicting Adolescents' Socio-Emotional Outcomes, Natalie Low Jan 2020

An Examination Of Quantity And Quality Of Maternal Consulting Predicting Adolescents' Socio-Emotional Outcomes, Natalie Low

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This observational investigation had two aims. The first aim examined the independent associations of the quantity and quality of maternal consulting and early adolescents’ socio-emotional outcomes. The second aim assessed the moderation effect of the quality of maternal consulting on the relationship between the quantity of maternal consulting and early adolescents’ outcomes. Seventy early adolescents (Mage=12.39 years old) and their mothers participated in the study. The sample was 51.4% girls and 48.6% boys. Mothers and their early adolescents were video recorded discussing typical hypothetical peer-related situations. Conversations were coded for the amount of consulting and four aspects of quality: feasibility, …

An Examination Of Reassurance-Seeking In Relation To Scrupulosity And Contamination Concerns, Katie H. Mangen Jan 2020

An Examination Of Reassurance-Seeking In Relation To Scrupulosity And Contamination Concerns, Katie H. Mangen

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Reassurance-seeking is a safety-seeking behavior that has been observed across symptom dimensions of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), including in individuals with scrupulosity, or moral/religious-based OCD. The current study sought to build upon existing literature by providing an examination of reassurance-seeking in the context of scrupulosity as com- pared with contamination concerns, which represent a different symptom dimension of OCD. Participants (N = 63) completed a battery of questionnaires prior to and following an administration of the Sentence Task—a laboratory-based task intended to elicit distress relevant to an obsessive belief known as thought-action fusion. The study utilized the TRSS-PM, a newly adapted …

Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia, Behavioral Inhibition/Activation, And Behavioral Response To A Distressed Infant Simulator In Emerging Adults, Erin R. Mckay Jan 2020

Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia, Behavioral Inhibition/Activation, And Behavioral Response To A Distressed Infant Simulator In Emerging Adults, Erin R. Mckay

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Caregiver sensitivity and intrusiveness during infancy are predictive of the development of self-regulation, joint-attention, and cognitive ability. However, few studies have examined predictors of caregiver responses to infant distress. Of particular note is vagal tone, specifically respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a physiological measure of top-down self-regulation. Previous work has identified a relationship between RSA, as well as other measures of caregiver self-regulation, with caregiver sensitivity and intrusiveness. The current study also examined additional predictors of caregiver responsiveness, behavioral inhibition and activation, which was conceptualized as a bottom-up system of self-regulation due to its influence on motivation and personality. It was …

The Role Of Medial Septum Cholinergic Function In Processing Self-Movement Cues To Maintain Spatial Orientation, Jenna Rae Osterlund Jan 2020

The Role Of Medial Septum Cholinergic Function In Processing Self-Movement Cues To Maintain Spatial Orientation, Jenna Rae Osterlund

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Wandering is the most life-threatening and commonly reported symptom of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by an inability to maintain spatial orientation. The often deadly consequences of wandering are projected to rise in the coming decades due to the advancing aged population. These upcoming challenges necessitate a more comprehensive understanding of the neurobiology of spatial orientation in order to evaluate novel therapeutic techniques for symptoms such as wandering. The inability to maintain spatial orientation in AD may be due to the pathological degeneration of the hippocampal cholinergic system. This neurological system is conserved across species for its function …

My Quest For Confidence (2020 - 2021), Tai Tran Jan 2020

My Quest For Confidence (2020 - 2021), Tai Tran

Critical Evaluation

In this critical evaluation Tran discusses the need for confidence in writing and not simply relying on summarizing or explaining sources, but connecting back to one’s main argument and extending, commenting on, or even critiquing those sources. Along with the narrative essay that Tran provides, there is also a list of “author notes” or a cover letter that accompanies the main essay. This first list of eight points helps to frame the reader’s understanding of the critical evaluation essay.

Child Protection Services: The Developmental Consequences Of Arbitrary Removal (2020-2021), John Jackson Jan 2020

Child Protection Services: The Developmental Consequences Of Arbitrary Removal (2020-2021), John Jackson

Research Inquiry

This research inquiry example details the developmental consequences for children removed from their biological homes by Children’s Services. Jackson uses sources to discuss physical, mental, and emotional implications for removing children from their homes or parents in their future development as both children and adults. Not only does Jackson present an alternative perspective thinking about negative consequences and how the process of removal puts parents at odds with regaining custody, but he also proposes an alternative solution in the conclusion.

The Medical Ethics Of Hela Cells (2020-2021), Elizabeth Pratt Jan 2020

The Medical Ethics Of Hela Cells (2020-2021), Elizabeth Pratt

Research Inquiry

Pratt’s research inquiry essay focuses on the medical ethics issues involved in the case of Henrietta Lacks and her cancer cells (known as HeLa,) which have been used and reused in medical research without hers or her family’s consent. Throughout this essay, Pratt moves between several areas for concern including medical agency and patients’ rights to their own bodies, financial implications, legal definitions, and issues for privacy. Pratt concludes with a call for future regulations and focus on medical ethics.

The Effects Of Misrepresentation (2020-2021), Miranda R. Cobo Jan 2020

The Effects Of Misrepresentation (2020-2021), Miranda R. Cobo

Research Inquiry

This example of a research inquiry investigates issues of representation in the comic, Black Panther. Cobo writes: “In the 1960s, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced T’Challa, famously known as the Black Panther. He was the first black superhero to be introduced in the Marvel Universe and into popular American comics. The world that Black Panther lived in is very advanced and breaks the stereotype of the view that many Americans have on Africa. However, that is only one stereotype that it has worked against. There have been many other stereotypes that writers use in T’Challa’s storyline that can be …

Illegitimate Control: An Acknowledgement Of False White Supremacy (2020-2021), Whitman Ives Jan 2020

Illegitimate Control: An Acknowledgement Of False White Supremacy (2020-2021), Whitman Ives

Research Inquiry

This research inquiry introduces a timely conversation on racism, cultural appropriation, and white supremacy. Ives’ argument is that the root cause of cultural appropriation and racism can be traced to a negative and false history of white supremacy. In other words, white culture has been founded and perpetuated based on power-seeking behavior, of which racism is more a symptom. Ives asserts that it is important to acknowledge that white culture is based on false assumptions of supremacy and to address that more systematically rather than addressing only individual events or instances of racism.

The Doppelganger Effect (2020-2021), Jessica Jean-Baptiste Jan 2020

The Doppelganger Effect (2020-2021), Jessica Jean-Baptiste

Research Inquiry

In this example of a research inquiry, Jean-Baptiste focuses on the use of cameras and mirrors to create doubles, or “doppelgangers” for the character of Nina in the film, Black Swan. In thinking about the “doppelganger effect,” Jean-Baptiste moves through an argument for how doubling fulfills not only one purpose or message within the film, but three. Her claim in synthesizing multiple sources of film analysis is that the doppelganger allows Aronofsky to comment on mental disorders, sexism within the community of ballet, and the overall mood for the film as a thriller as opposed to only a drama.

Stand By Me As My Words Write The Way (2020-2021), Gianna Wheeler

Remix

In this example of a remix assignment, Wheeler uses poetry as a means to translate her research inquiry project into a new form for a new audience and purpose. She remixes aspects of her film analysis of Stand By Me with a reimagined focus on her research process. Wheeler considers aspects such as source selection, revision, and incorporating feedback into the final research inquiry paper. Throughout the poem, “Stand By Me” is both the title of the film on which Wheeler is conducting research and also a repeated phrase marking the progress that she makes through various stages in …

Disney's Portrayal Of Women: An Analysis Of Female Villains And Princesses, Natalie S. Wellman Jan 2020

Disney's Portrayal Of Women: An Analysis Of Female Villains And Princesses, Natalie S. Wellman

Concordia Journal of Communication Research

Abstract

This study was conducted to understand how our views of women are shaped by Disney films. Specifically, this paper looks at how female villains and princesses are portrayed in nine Disney movies. These films were studied and coded for similarities and differences within specific themes. Ultimately, this study concluded there were a number of similar themes in regard to appearance, nonverbals, interactions, and common female stereotypes. The study also noted a shift between older (four movies before 1990) and newer (five movies after 1990) Disney movies; however, many of the changes do not occur until the most recent Disney …

Writing And Implementing An Open Textbook In World Regional Geography: A Case Study, Caitlin Finlayson Jan 2020

Writing And Implementing An Open Textbook In World Regional Geography: A Case Study, Caitlin Finlayson

Geography Articles

As the rising cost of college textbooks has outpaced both inflation and increases in tuition fees, this expense has created a significant barrier to student learning. Some instructors have adopted or created open educational resources, meaning materials which are freely and openly available. While the most obvious benefit of open course content might be cost savings, the fact that these materials can be freely adapted and changed can have substantial impact on the learning experience itself and enable an instructor to completely change the structure and outcomes of a course. This paper provides a case study on writing an open …
