Just-In-Accuracy: Mobile Approach To Uncertainty, Martine Ceberio, Christoph Q. Lauter, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2023

Just-In-Accuracy: Mobile Approach To Uncertainty, Martine Ceberio, Christoph Q. Lauter, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To make a mobile device last longer, we need to limit computations to a bare minimum. One way to do that, in complex control and decision making problems, is to limit precision with which we do computations, i.e., limit the number of bits in the numbers' representation. A problem is that often, we do not know with what precision should we do computations to get the desired accuracy of the result. What we propose is to first do computations with very low precision, then, based on these computations, estimate what precision is needed to achieve the given accuracy, and then …

Cybersecurity Policy Rubric And Analysis For The State Of Maine Electrical Transmission Grid, Benjamin Plummer M.S. Oct 2023

Cybersecurity Policy Rubric And Analysis For The State Of Maine Electrical Transmission Grid, Benjamin Plummer M.S.

All Student Scholarship

The State of Maine’s (SOM) electrical grid is aging. While there are public and private efforts to bring it up to date, gaps in cybersecurity policies and laws exist (NERC, n.d.; see also MPUC, n.d.; CISA, n.d.). This policy and law research may also apply to other states and the protection of their critical infrastructure. The researcher examined the grid’s controls, policies, and laws to determine the influence each exerts over the grid and where that influence presents vulnerabilities in security. The research focused on the controls, policies, and laws that play a role in protecting the grid. The researcher …

Decentralized Multimedia Data Sharing In Iov: A Learning-Based Equilibrium Of Supply And Demand, Jiani Fan, Minrui Xu, Jiale Guo, Lwin Khin Shar, Jiawen Kang, Dusit Niyato, Kwok-Yan Lam Oct 2023

Decentralized Multimedia Data Sharing In Iov: A Learning-Based Equilibrium Of Supply And Demand, Jiani Fan, Minrui Xu, Jiale Guo, Lwin Khin Shar, Jiawen Kang, Dusit Niyato, Kwok-Yan Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has great potential to transform transportation systems by enhancing road safety, reducing traffic congestion, and improving user experience through onboard infotainment applications. Decentralized data sharing can improve security, privacy, reliability, and facilitate infotainment data sharing in IoVs. However, decentralized data sharing may not achieve the expected efficiency if there are IoV users who only want to consume the shared data but are not willing to contribute their own data to the community, resulting in incomplete information observed by other vehicles and infrastructure, which can introduce additional transmission latency. Therefore, in this paper, by modeling the …

Anomaly Detection Under Distribution Shift, Tri Cao, Jiawen Zhu, Guansong Pang Oct 2023

Anomaly Detection Under Distribution Shift, Tri Cao, Jiawen Zhu, Guansong Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Anomaly detection (AD) is a crucial machine learning task that aims to learn patterns from a set of normal training samples to identify abnormal samples in test data. Most existing AD studies assume that the training and test data are drawn from the same data distribution, but the test data can have large distribution shifts arising in many real-world applications due to different natural variations such as new lighting conditions, object poses, or background appearances, rendering existing AD methods ineffective in such cases. In this paper, we consider the problem of anomaly detection under distribution shift and establish performance benchmarks …

Interferometry Of Efimov States In Thermal Gases By Modulated Magnetic Fields, G. Bougas, Simeon I. Mistakidis, P. Schmelcher, C. H. Greene, P. Giannakeas Oct 2023

Interferometry Of Efimov States In Thermal Gases By Modulated Magnetic Fields, G. Bougas, Simeon I. Mistakidis, P. Schmelcher, C. H. Greene, P. Giannakeas

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We Demonstrate That An Interferometer Based On Modulated Magnetic Field Pulses Enables Precise Characterization Of The Energies And Lifetimes Of Efimov Trimers Irrespective Of The Magnitude And Sign Of The Interactions In Rb85 Thermal Gases. Despite Thermal Effects, Interference Fringes Develop When The Dark Time Between The Pulses Is Varied. This Enables The Selective Excitation Of Coherent Superpositions Of Trimer, Dimer, And Free-Atom States. The Interference Patterns Possess Two Distinct Damping Timescales At Short And Long Dark Times That Are Either Equal To Or Twice As Long As The Lifetime Of Efimov Trimers, Respectively. Specifically, This Behavior At Long Dark …

Docker Technology For Small Scenario-Based Excercises In Cybersecurity, Zeinab Ahmed Oct 2023

Docker Technology For Small Scenario-Based Excercises In Cybersecurity, Zeinab Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

This study aims to better prepare students for cybersecurity roles by providing practical tools that bridge the gap between theory and real-world applications. We investigate the role of small scenario-based exercises for students’ understanding of cybersecurity concepts. In particular, we assess the use of Docker technology to deliver training that includes a simple small scenario on html code injection. The effectiveness of scenario-based learning has long been defined and by using SBL, we are going to create hands-on activity that involves the fundamental topics in cybersecurity using Docker technology, allowing students to see the exploitation of the vulnerabilities and defense …
