A Case Study Of Sustainable Development At The Penonomé Wind Farms, A Cdm Registered Project In Coclé, John Matuszewski
A Case Study Of Sustainable Development At The Penonomé Wind Farms, A Cdm Registered Project In Coclé, John Matuszewski
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Penonomé wind projects fit into a long history of previous internationally financed development projects in Panama, including those from the Clean Development Mechanism. A moderate level of research has been conducted on other Clean Development Mechanism projects, but despite contributing to 5% of Panama’s energy needs and constituting the largest wind park in Central America, the Penonomé wind farms remain little researched. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with relevant people associated with the project or with relevant information to gain more information about the case study. Using the information processed from these reviews and information from publicly available resources, the …
Surveillance Systems In Western Kenya: Methods, Perceptions, And Effectiveness, Marissa Duffy
Surveillance Systems In Western Kenya: Methods, Perceptions, And Effectiveness, Marissa Duffy
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Surveillance is an important tool in monitoring and evaluating infectious disease patterns and trends. Surveillance is vital because it aids public health officials and medical professionals in creating better prevention methods and efficiently managing outbreaks. Kenya is home to many noncommunicable diseases making it an important location to conduct disease surveillance. Within Kenya, each county has its own surveillance unit which tracks and controls outbreaks. In addition, government run surveillance systems were established to determine disease burden, incidence, and patterns in specific at-risk communities around Kenya. One of these major surveillance systems is Population-Based Infectious Disease Surveillance (PBIDS) which has …

Human – non-human primate conflict is particularly crucial due to primates’ high capacity to live among human populations. The study to analyze Human - Nonhuman Primate Conflict Mitigation Techniques, was carried in November 2023 at Mto wa Mbu, Northern Tanzania. To analyze techniques currently being used to mitigate human – non-human primate conflict, this study collected data through semi-structured interviews. Over 87% (n=35) of respondents used multiple mitigation techniques simultaneously. 80% of respondents (n=32) reported using projectiles to ward off foraging primates, 75% of respondents (n=30) reported using loud noises (made either by the voice/body or by manipulating noisemakers), 67.5% …
Representations And Realities: Misali Island's Biodiversity In Hybrid Narratives, Justin Ross Whitney
Representations And Realities: Misali Island's Biodiversity In Hybrid Narratives, Justin Ross Whitney
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are complex organisms that ebb and flow between strict and unyielding conservation doctrines often at the cost of community engagement. Misali Island is different. Conceived and advocated for by community members, this organism has navigated a tumultuous tenure of environmental degradation, periods of high and low funding, and a looming tourism presence. On top of these challenges has been a growing fishing community attempting to share in the bounty of this shockingly biodiverse setting. This study sorts through the grey space of Misali Island by applying a hybrid narrative that interfaces the marine context of the …

Creating A Framework For An Effective Koala Recovery Center: A Case Study Of Friends Of The Koala, Nsw, Finley Scoular
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Koala populations in New South Wales, Queensland, and the Australian Capital District are currently faced with factors that threaten their survival. Within one decade, their status has shifted from stable to vulnerable to endangered. The cause of this is attributed to increased exposure to dog attacks, vehicle collisions, diseases, and habitat fragmentation and destruction. The koalas' status of endangered in these territories has illuminated the need for human intervention. This study focuses on the specific form of human intervention that involves the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of wild koalas. Due to the recent koala status change from vulnerable to endangered, …
The Experience Of Awe In Nature And Its Implications For Sustainability, Ella Shriner
The Experience Of Awe In Nature And Its Implications For Sustainability, Ella Shriner
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Awe is a complex emotion and a relatively new field of psychological study. Previous studies have looked at the benefits of spending time in nature including spurring environmental action, and how awe is felt in nature. In this study, I investigate the connection between these two ideas by addressing the questions of how Awe is experienced in the Northern Rivers region of Australia, and whether small and big moments of awe motivate people to take environmental action and connect them to their community and the natural world. For this study, I conducted 15 interviews, collected 51 surveys, and personally explored …

The increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotic agents is a main global public health problem. The use of nanoparticles is one of the promising ways to overcome microbial resistance to antimicrobial agents. Metal nanoparticles are increasingly used to target bacterial strains. Advances in nanotechnology, in particular the ability to synthesize nanoparticles of specific size and shape, are likely to lead to the development of new antibacterial agents. The antibacterial activities of nanoparticles are largely influenced by their sizes and large surface area/mass ratio. The antibacterial mechanisms of nanoparticles are poorly understood, but the currently accepted mechanisms include oxidative stress induction, …

Attention-Based Human Age Estimation From Face Images To Enhance Public Security, Md. Ashiqur Rahman, Shuhena S. Aonty, Kaushik Deb, Iqbal H. Sarker
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Age estimation from facial images has gained significant attention due to its practical applications such as public security. However, one of the major challenges faced in this field is the limited availability of comprehensive training data. Moreover, due to the gradual nature of aging, similar-aged faces tend to share similarities despite their race, gender, or location. Recent studies on age estimation utilize convolutional neural networks (CNN), treating every facial region equally and disregarding potentially informative patches that contain age-specific details. Therefore, an attention module can be used to focus extra attention on important patches in the image. In this study, …
Garma, Har And Rules Of Thumb For Modelling Realized Volatility, David E. Allen, Shelton Peiris
Garma, Har And Rules Of Thumb For Modelling Realized Volatility, David E. Allen, Shelton Peiris
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This paper features an analysis of the relative effectiveness, in terms of the Adjusted R-Square, of a variety of methods of modelling realized volatility (RV), namely the use of Gegenbauer processes in Auto-Regressive Moving Average format, GARMA, as opposed to Heterogenous Auto-Regressive HAR models and simple rules of thumb. The analysis is applied to two data sets that feature the RV of the S&P500 index, as sampled at 5 min intervals, provided by the OxfordMan RV database. The GARMA model does perform slightly better than the HAR model, but both models are matched by a simple rule of thumb regression …
Convergence Analysis Of Leapfrog For Geodesics, Erchuan Zhang, Lyle Noakes
Convergence Analysis Of Leapfrog For Geodesics, Erchuan Zhang, Lyle Noakes
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Geodesics are of fundamental interest in mathematics, physics, computer science, and many other subjects. The so-called leapfrog algorithm was proposed in [L. Noakes, J. Aust. Math. Soc., 65 (1998), pp. 37-50] (but not named there as such) to find geodesics joining two given points x0 and x1 on a path-connected complete Riemannian manifold. The basic idea is to choose some junctions between x0 and x1 that can be joined by geodesics locally and then adjust these junctions. It was proved that the sequence of piecewise geodesics { k}k ≥ 1 generated by this algorithm converges to a geodesic joining x0 …

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia and development of the western Laurentian rifted margin are in part recorded by Neoproterozoic to mid-Paleozoic igneous and sedimentary rock successions in the Canadian Cordillera. New bedrock mapping and volcanic facies analysis of Early Ordovician mafic rocks assigned to the Menzie Creek Formation in central Yukon allow reconstruction of the depositional environment during the volcanic eruptions, whole-rock geochemical data constrain the melting depth and crust-mantle source regions of the igneous rocks within the study area, and zircon U-Pb age studies provide determination of the precise timing of submarine eruptions. Menzie Creek Formation volcanic rocks …
Rough Numbers And Variations On The Erdős--Kac Theorem, Kai Fan
Rough Numbers And Variations On The Erdős--Kac Theorem, Kai Fan
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The study of arithmetic functions, functions with domain N and codomain C, has been a central topic in number theory. This work is dedicated to the study of the distribution of arithmetic functions of great interest in analytic and probabilistic number theory.
In the first part, we study the distribution of positive integers free of prime factors less than or equal to any given real number y>=1. Denoting by Phi(x,y) the count of these numbers up to any given x>=y, we show, by a combination of analytic methods and sieves, that Phi(x,y)<0.6x/\log y holds uniformly for all 3<=y<=sqrt{x}, improving upon an earlier result of the author in the same range. We also prove numerically explicit estimates of the de Bruijn type for Phi(x,y) which are applicable in wide ranges.
In the second part, we turn …

Depth-based and radar-based remote sensing methods (e.g., lidar, synthetic aperture radar) are promising approaches for remotely measuring snow water equivalent (SWE) at high spatial resolution. These approaches require snow density estimates, obtained from in-situ measurements or density models, to calculate SWE. However, in-situ measurements are operationally limited, and few density models have seen extensive evaluation. Here, we combine near-coincident, lidar-measured snow depths with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) two-way travel times (twt) of snowpack thickness to derive >20 km of relative permittivity estimates from nine dry and two wet snow surveys at Grand Mesa, Cameron Pass, and Ranch Creek, Colorado. …

Structural, Functional And Biochemical Studies To Elucidate The Molecular Basis Of Xenobiotic Metabolism Of Tetranychus Uritcae, A Major Agricultural Pest, Ricardo Hernandez Arriaza
Theses and Dissertations
The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, is a major cosmopolitan pest that feeds on more than 1,100 plant species, including 150 crops. Such a wide host range indicates this mite’s unparalleled xenobiotic responsiveness that is also coincident with their ability to rapidly develop resistance to pesticides. An unprecedently large detoxifying machinery is one of the main biological traits responsible for their extraordinary adaptation potential and devastating effect on crops. Availability of the whole genome sequence revealed expansions in all major detoxifying families and demonstrated that this genome has been enriched by horizontally transferred genes from bacteria and fungi. Motivated by …

A Field-Programmable Metamaterial Using Memristor As A Stable Switcher, Taekuk Hong
A Field-Programmable Metamaterial Using Memristor As A Stable Switcher, Taekuk Hong
Theses and Dissertations
Before the memristor was discovered, there were RLC circuits as representative passive devices. However, the fourth fundamental two-terminal circuit has been discovered by Dr. Leon Chua in 1971 and has been called a memristor. The memristor is a compound word of memory and resistor, and is an element whose resistive value is not constant and whose resistive value changes depending on the applied voltage and is recorded as a memory. It is mainly used in resistive switching and is the center of this research theme. A metamaterial is artificially created material that has never been found in nature. The theory …
A Method For Single-Particle Magnetic Particle Spectroscopy With A Nanofabricated Coplanar Stripline, Jacob Martin
A Method For Single-Particle Magnetic Particle Spectroscopy With A Nanofabricated Coplanar Stripline, Jacob Martin
Theses and Dissertations
Drawing from magnetic particle imaging principles, magnetic particle spectroscopy (MPS) serves as a valuable tool employing superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) in diverse applications ranging from medical imaging to biosensing and the comprehensive study of magnetic particles’ characteristics. MPS leverages the nonlinear response exhibited by SPIONs when a external magnetic field is applied, enabling a highly sensitive method for examining biological systems and more. However, conventional MPS setups demand a high particle concentration of approximately 10^15 particles per liter to generate a detectable response. The first objective of this work is to simulate the dynamics of a system with the ability …

Robocat: An Autonomous Surface Vehicle (Asv) For Near-Surface Hydrodynamic Measurements In Buoyant Plumes. Development And Case Study, Christopher Tom Papageorgiou
Theses and Dissertations
The study of near surface processes in plumes and other stratified environments requires the collection of hydrodynamic and hydrographic data near the sea surface at high temporal and spatial (in the vertical) resolution. This need led to the design and development of a low-cost autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) equipped with a 5-beam acoustic Doppler current profiler (Nortek 1000 Signature) capable of measuring the vertical structure of both mean flow and turbulence dissipation rate (ε) as close as 30 cm below the sea surface. The ASV is a small catamaran-like platform propelled by four thrusters arranged in an Omni-X configuration, to …
Machine Learning Approach To Activity Categorization In Young Adults Using Biomechanical Metrics, Nathan Q. C. Holland
Machine Learning Approach To Activity Categorization In Young Adults Using Biomechanical Metrics, Nathan Q. C. Holland
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Inactive adults often have decreased musculoskeletal health and increased risk factors for chronic diseases. However, there is limited data linking biomechanical measurements of generally healthy young adults to their physical activity levels assessed through questionnaires. Commonly used data collection methods in biomechanics for assessing musculoskeletal health include but are not limited to muscle quality (measured as echo intensity when using ultrasound), isokinetic (i.e., dynamic) muscle strength, muscle activations, and functional movement assessments using motion capture systems. These assessments can be time consuming for both data collection and processing. Therefore, understanding if all biomechanical assessments are necessary to classify the activity …

Tracing And Segmentation Of Molecular Patterns In 3-Dimensional Cryo-Et/Em Density Maps Through Algorithmic Image Processing And Deep Learning-Based Techniques, Salim Sazzed
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Understanding the structures of biological macromolecules is highly important as they are closely associated with cellular functionalities. Comprehending the precise organization of actin filaments is crucial because they form the dynamic cytoskeleton, which offers structural support to cells and connects the cell’s interior with its surroundings. However, determining the precise organization of actin filaments is challenging due to the poor quality of cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) images, which suffer from low signal-to-noise (SNR) ratios and the presence of missing wedge, as well as diverse shape characteristics of actin filaments. To address these formidable challenges, the primary component of this dissertation focuses …
Investigation, Synthesis And Rational Design Of Novel Transuranic Containing Extended Structures, Adrian Thomas Hines
Investigation, Synthesis And Rational Design Of Novel Transuranic Containing Extended Structures, Adrian Thomas Hines
Theses and Dissertations
The use of nuclear technology has proven useful for energy generation and for weapons manufacturing, but disposal and storage of nuclear waste is an ongoing problem. The accumulation of nuclear waste over the past decades has yielded a vast amount of waste that must be dealt with, and with space at interim storage facilities diminishing, it has become increasingly important to find solutions to nuclear waste storage. The vitrification process has been widely accepted as a viable route for immobilization of high-level waste; however, the process is inadequate for complex waste streams and has many drawbacks such as limited waste …
Reactive Molecular Dynamics Of Large Systems: Quantum Dynamics With Adaptable Gaussian Bases; Hydroxide Diffusion In A Polymeric Environment, Mohottige Sachith Prasanga Wickramasinghe
Reactive Molecular Dynamics Of Large Systems: Quantum Dynamics With Adaptable Gaussian Bases; Hydroxide Diffusion In A Polymeric Environment, Mohottige Sachith Prasanga Wickramasinghe
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation describes our research in theory and applications of reactive molecular dynamics. Quantum dynamics provides the foundation for understanding chemical processes. However, the computational cost of describing a general quantum system scales exponentially with the system size. Thus, an efficient basis representation of wavefunctions is essential. Time-dependent Gaussian bases are often employed to describe the large-amplitude motion of high-dimensional systems. The time dependence of such bases is typically determined by (i) the variational principle or by (ii) classical dynamics. But those approaches have shortcomings due to intrinsic singularity of the variational equations in the full basis limit or due …

Do Microplastics, Vibrio Bacteria, And Warming Water Temperatures Cause Disease In The Northern Star Coral, Astrangia Poculata?, Heather Leigh Sheffey
OES Theses and Dissertations
As marine plastic pollution increases, it becomes imperative to study the effects of microplastics on marine fauna. Marine plastic debris is a vector for disease to marine invertebrates (Lamb et al., 2018; Rotjan et al., 2019). In this context, studies have shown Astrangia poculata will consume microplastics as they do their normal food (Allen et al, 2017; Rotjan et al., 2019). Further, with temperatures increasing worldwide, there is a concern the virulence of disease-causing bacteria will increase (Vezzulli et al., 2015). In a series of manipulative laboratory experiments, this study quantified changes in respiration rates and visual health of Astrangia …
A New Method To Determine The Posterior Distribution Of Coefficient Alpha, John Mart V. Delosreyes
A New Method To Determine The Posterior Distribution Of Coefficient Alpha, John Mart V. Delosreyes
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
There is a focus within the behavioral/social sciences on non-physical, psychological constructs (i.e., constructs). These constructs are indirectly measured using measurement instruments that consist of questions that capture the manifestations of these constructs. The indirect nature of measuring constructs results in a need of ensuring that measurement instruments are reliable. The most popular statistic used to estimate reliability is coefficient alpha as it is easy to compute and has properties that make it desirable to use. Coefficient alpha’s popularity has resulted in a wide breadth of research into its qualities. Notably, research about coefficient alpha’s distribution has led to developments …

Management and design affect systems’ ability to deliver ecosystem services and meet sustainable intensification needs for a growing population. Soil–plant–animal health evaluations at the systems level for conventional and silvopastoral environments are lacking and challenge adoption across temperate regions. Impacts of silvopasture on soil quality, microclimate, cattle heat stress, forage quality and yield, and cattle weight gain were compared to a conventional pasture in the mid-southern US. Here, we illustrate silvopastures have greater soil organic carbon, water content, and overall quality, with lower temperatures (soil and cattle) than conventional pastures. Forage production and cattle weight gains were similar across systems; …
