Although many synthetic and natural pharmaceuticals and drug-like compounds contain spiro center(s) in their structures, the synthesis of spiro centers is seen to be an exciting and difficult area of research. The synthesis of spiro compounds and their derivatives was carried out using a four-component process that included reagents like hydrazine hydrate, isatin, malononitrile, and an active methylene compound like ethyl acetoacetate. Microwave irradiation was used in a short time range (5 – 30 min) and moderate temperature (80°C), with water as a solvent, and N, N-Diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) as a catalyst to give high yield of products. This thesis elucidates the origin of molecular events during the damage-repair cycle in a new class of copolymers composed of ionic liquids (ILs) and acrylic-based monomers. In these studies, (1-[(2-methacryloyloxy)ethyl]-3- butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl)imide) (MEBIm-TFSI) was copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n-butyl acrylate (nBA) to form poly((1-[(2-methacryloyloxy)ethyl]-3- butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl)imide)-co-methyl methacrylate-co-n butyl acrylate) (p(MEBIm-TFSI/MMA/nBA)) and its mechanical and electrical properties were examined. People with communication disorders often experience difficulties being understood by unfamiliar listeners or in noisy environments. A common strategy for effectively communicating in these scenarios is to use simpler and more predictable language. Despite the prevalence of this strategy, there has been little to no research to date focused on the effectiveness of language simplification as a communication strategy. This study seeks to begin filling that gap by using natural language processing to determine whether speakers with early-stage Parkinson’s disease and age-matched neurotypical speakers are able to successfully simplify their language while still maintaining the original message.

Almost 75% of traffic-related emissions are caused by heavy-duty freight trucks and significantly impact neighborhoods, schools, and communities around shipping and distribution lines. With poor air quality and respiratory health, many children in at-risk and disadvantaged communities experience high rates of asthma, lower attendance in school, and lower concentration. This research creates to improve the impacts of heavy-duty electric freight by improving the route efficiency (in terms of energy, time, or route distance) of EV trucks. Derivation of Sodium (Na) number density from the Na lidar observations requires the in situ temperature and wind information because the absorption cross-section of the Na atom is a function of these dynamic parameters. The Na number density above ~ 110 km altitude was difficult to derive with the conventional algorithm, however. The standard output of the Na number density that utilizes the lidar-measured wind and temperature information falls short at ~ 110 km altitude and above due to the relatively large measurement uncertainties in the two critical parameters (low signal-to-noise ratio). Plant-soil feedback is a process through which plants modify the properties of their associated soils, affecting their growth. PSF can play a key role in regulating plant growth and communities including altering plant invasion, rarity, and abundance. However, our understanding of the soil organisms that drive these plant growth responses is limited. Most studies treat soils as a ‘black box’ and do little to reveal which specific microbes or microbial communities may be responsible. Large herbivores, such as mule deer and cattle have similar life histories and likely compete for resources. However, quantifying the extent to which these species compete and the specific resources they compete for has proved challenging. My research examines if cattle influence deer abundance and behavior due to competition for forage, competition for shade, and/or by affecting the predation risk of deer. Using a grid of autonomous trail cameras, I was able to determine if cattle abundance influences local deer abundance in relation to specific resources and habitat features. Flat-slab subduction, where an oceanic plate subducts horizontally below a continental margin for hundreds of kilometers, is an enigmatic but prevalent tectonic configuration in which chemical cycling and alteration of the continental plate is poorly constrained. The Wet Mountains of Colorado are underlain by exhumed Proterozoic metamorphic rock that lies north of the recently identified 1.46 to 1.40 Ga Picuris orogen in northern New Mexico. The Picuris orogen is inferred to have formed in response to a Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.49-1.40 Ga) contractional to transpressional event extrapolated to be regional in extent. It has been proposed that the Picuris orogen composes the westernmost tectonic segment of the Pinware-Baraboo-Picuris orogen that formed along an evolving convergent margin that becomes younger from northeast to southwest. This paper compares the predictive performance of two commonly used financial models, the Generalized Auto-Regressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model, and the Stochastic Volatility model. Both techniques are used in the finance literature to model returns on an asset; the main difference between the two is that the former holds volatility as deterministic, whereas the latter treats it as a stochastic component. Three 10-year periods (2006-15, 2008-17, and 2010-19) of returns of the S&P-500 Index are used to train the two models. The parameter estimation is done using Hamiltonian Monte Carlo. Accidental release of toxic chemicals can put workers and nearby populations at significant risk. Consequence assessment of accidents in urban environments is of particular interest. Urban geometries create wind channels between buildings, along with particularly dangerous areas downwind of buildings, where near-stagnant flow is present. Furthermore, recirculation zones can be formed between buildings, trapping high concentrations of toxic gases at ground level, particularly for denser-than-air gases. The unit correction constant (B) in the ASTM D6836 standard needs to be evaluated. The B-value was proposed to be 0.00548 instead of 0.00553. This apparent discrepancy led to an investigation comparing the predicted and measured suction values for high air entry (HAE) ceramic disks. A Beckman-Coulter Model J6-MI six-bay centrifuge and a WP4C Dewpoint Potentiameter were used in the testing program. HAE ceramic disks rated with bubbling pressures of 3-bar and 5-bar were used as analogue soil specimens. This thesis presents a novel approach to video understanding by emulating human perceptual processes and creating an explainable and coherent storytelling representation of video content.
