Tivey, Thor Hansteen, Nicole M.-B. Williamson, Margaret Stewart, Jan Fietzke, David Butterfield, Matthias Frische, Leigh Allen, Brian Cousens, Julia Langer

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Hydrothermal vent deposits form on the seafloor as a result of cooling and mixing of hot hydrothermal fluids with cold seawater. Amongst the major sulfide and sulfate minerals that are preserved at vent sites, barite (BaSO4) is unique because it requires the direct mixing of Ba-rich hydrothermal fluid with sulfate-rich seawater in order for precipitation to occur. Because of its extremely low solubility, barite crystals preserve geochemical fingerprints associated with conditions of formation. Here, we present data from petrographic and geochemical analyses of hydrothermal barite from the Endeavour Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge, northeast Pacific Ocean, …

Source Mechanism Analysis Of Single-Well Microseismic Data Using Full-Wavefield Moment Tensor Inversion, Trudy Watkins Jan 2016

Source Mechanism Analysis Of Single-Well Microseismic Data Using Full-Wavefield Moment Tensor Inversion, Trudy Watkins

LSU Master's Theses

Receiver angular coverage of microseismic sources occurring during hydraulic fracturing treatments is an important factor to consider when interpreting moment tensor inversion results. A horizontal receiver array can provide greater angular coverage of vertical failure planes than a vertical receiver array. The source orientation can be accurately determined if the array samples both sides of the failure plane. However, the compensated-linear-vector-dipole (CLVD) mechanism can be overestimated by up to ~40% for double-couple (DC) sources and the isotropic mechanism can be overestimated by ~70% for CLVD sources. Source mechanism constraints on the moment tensor inversion are used to mitigate the lack …

Missing The Trees For The Forest: The Socioecological Significance Of Dispersed Farmland Trees In Northern Ethiopia, Jacob A. Wall Jan 2016

Missing The Trees For The Forest: The Socioecological Significance Of Dispersed Farmland Trees In Northern Ethiopia, Jacob A. Wall

Honors Theses

Scattered trees are prominent features in the agricultural landscape of the Ethiopian highlands. The dry Afromontane forests of the Amhara Region in northern Ethiopia have faced centuries of deforestation - the FAO estimates only 3% of the region is forested today. The remaining landscape has been largely converted into agricultural and grazing lands, with the exception of some limited government-protected lands, as well as thousands of small forest fragments left around Orthodox Churches (“church forests”). But while a growing body of scholarship has highlighted the ecological and cultural importance of church forests and other natural forest fragments, the roles of …

N3lo Nn Interaction Adjusted To Light Nuclei In Ab Exitu Approach, A. M. Shirokov, I. J. Shin, Y. Kim, M. Sosonkina, P. Maris, J. P. Vary

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

We use phase-equivalent transformations to adjust off-shell properties of similarity renormalization group evolved chiral effective field theory NN interaction (Idaho N3LO) to fit selected binding energies and spectra of light nuclei in an ab exitu approach. We then test the transformed interaction on a set of additional observables in light nuclei to verify that it provides reasonable descriptions of these observables with an apparent reduced need for three- and many-nucleon interactions.

Watertight And 2-Manifold Surface Meshes Using Dual Contouring With Tetrahedral Decomposition Of Grid Cubes, Tanweer Rashid, Sharmin Sultana, Michel A. Audette Jan 2016

Watertight And 2-Manifold Surface Meshes Using Dual Contouring With Tetrahedral Decomposition Of Grid Cubes, Tanweer Rashid, Sharmin Sultana, Michel A. Audette

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

The Dual Contouring algorithm (DC) is a grid-based process used to generate surface meshes from volumetric data. The advantage of DC is that it can reproduce sharp features by inserting vertices anywhere inside the grid cube, as opposed to the Marching Cubes (MC) algorithm that can insert vertices only on the grid edges. However, DC is unable to guarantee 2-manifold and watertight meshes due to the fact that it produces only one vertex for each grid cube. We present a modified Dual Contouring algorithm that is capable of overcoming this limitation. Our method decomposes an ambiguous grid cube into a …

Estimated Grass Grazing Removal Rate In A Semiarid Eurasian Steppe Watershed As Influenced By Climate, Xixi Wang, Shohreh Pedram, Tingxi Liu, Ruizhong Gao, Fengling Li, Yanyun Luo Jan 2016

Estimated Grass Grazing Removal Rate In A Semiarid Eurasian Steppe Watershed As Influenced By Climate, Xixi Wang, Shohreh Pedram, Tingxi Liu, Ruizhong Gao, Fengling Li, Yanyun Luo

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Grazing removal rate of grasses needs to be determined for various climate conditions to address eco-environmental concerns (e.g., desertification) related to steppe grassland degradation. The conventional approach, which requires survey data on animal species and heads as well as grass consumption per individual animal, is too costly and time-consuming to be applied at a watershed scale. The objective of this study was to present a new approach that can be used to estimate grazing removal rate with no requirement of animal-related data. The application of this new approach was demonstrated in a Eurasian semiarid typical-steppe watershed for an analysis period …

Number Knowledge And Error Types Of Elementary Portuguese Students: Implications For Instruction, Silvana Watson, Sharon Judge, João Lopes, Célia Oliveira, Ana Catarina Jesus

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

In the present study, we examined number knowledge skills of 697 Portuguese elementary students from first to fourth grade. Students completed three number knowledge tasks: 1) translating numbers into words, 2) symbolic magnitude (i.e., number comparison), and 3) decomposing numbers. We evaluated students’ answers by means of error analysis using a three-category coding system adopted from specific error types were computed by grade level. Results showed that there were significant differences among grades and that the prerequisite linguistic error type (i.e., pre linguistic rules or principles of the cardinal number system), particularly in the magnitude tasks, significantly contributed to students’ …

Quantitative Assessment Of Secondary Flows Of Single-Phase Fluid Through Pipe Bends, Z. Kaldy, O. Ayala Jan 2016

Quantitative Assessment Of Secondary Flows Of Single-Phase Fluid Through Pipe Bends, Z. Kaldy, O. Ayala

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Single-phase fluid flow was simulated passing through various three dimensional pipe elbows. The simulations varied by Reynolds number, curvature ratios, and sweep angles and were all conducted using the k-e model available in COMSOL Multiphysics 5.1. The intent of this research was to qualitatively assess the flow characteristics under several different conditions. Many similarities were seen especially when comparing curvature ratios, the vorticity location for the turbulent cases show near identical behavior at the elbow midsection. One of the variables quantified in this paper is the maximum secondary velocity module which shows increasing values until the midsection of the elbow.

Comparison Of Group Size, Abundance Estimates And Movement Patterns Of Common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Mississippi Sound, Mississippi, Carrie Sinclair

LSU Master's Theses

Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus; dolphins) inhabiting Mississippi Sound (MSS) in the north-central Gulf of Mexico (GMx) are considered a part of a single stock of dolphins that includes Bay Boudreau and Lake Borgne by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). MSS is bounded by the mainland (north) and several barrier islands (south). Dolphins inhabiting coastal waters directly south of the barrier islands constitute part of the Northern Coastal Stock. Abundance in MSS has been reported to fluctuate seasonally, with higher abundances of dolphins estimated in summer versus winter. Analysis of covariance was used to compare previous abundance estimates. Results …

Feeding Ecology Of Red Snapper And Greater Amberjack At Standing Platforms In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Disentangling The Effects Of Artificial Light, Kristin Leanne Foss

LSU Master's Theses

Approximately 2,300 petroleum platforms are currently operating in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), and are estimated to provide an additional 4 to 12 km2 of artificial reef habitat. The ecological role of platforms has often been overlooked and little is known about the effect of artificial light from the active platforms on surrounding fish communities. This is the first study to address the potential impacts of artificial light on the trophic ecology of fish communities surrounding offshore platforms through gut content (GCA) and stable isotope (SIA) analyses. Red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) were collected quarterly from February 2014 to November 2015 …

Intracontinental Neotectonics: Case Studies From The Tian Shan Orogen And Kuqa Fold-Thrust Belt, Cindy M. Colón Jan 2016

Intracontinental Neotectonics: Case Studies From The Tian Shan Orogen And Kuqa Fold-Thrust Belt, Cindy M. Colón

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the kinematic properties of intracontinental deformation during short geologic time scales. Using three case studies this work characterizes active deformation at varying spatial scales within the continental interior of Eurasia. The far-field effect of the Cenozoic Indo-Asia collision is the driving force controlling deformation within the Eurasian continental interior. Active deformation across the intracontinental Tian Shan range challenges the plate tectonic model that proposes crustal deformation is concentrated along plate boundaries. This work further constrains the active kinematics of intracontinental motion that is necessary to understand the dynamics of the Eurasian intracontinental system. The two standing …

Detailed Source-Specific Molecular Composition Of Ambient Aerosol Organic Matter Using Ultrahigh Resolution Mass Spectrometry And H Nmr, Amanda S. Willoughby, Andrew S. Wozniak, Patrick G. Hatcher

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Organic aerosols (OA) are universally regarded as an important component of the atmosphere that have far-ranging impacts on climate forcing and human health. Many of these impacts are related to OA molecular characteristics. Despite the acknowledged importance, current uncertainties related to the source apportionment of molecular properties and environmental impacts make it difficult to confidently predict the net impacts of OA. Here we evaluate the specific molecular compounds as well as bulk structural properties of total suspended particulates in ambient OA collected from key emission sources (marine, biomass burning, and urban) using ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry (UHR-MS) and proton nuclear …

Improved High Temperature Stability Of Anatase Tio2 Photocatalysts By N, F, P Co-Doping, Rachel Fagan, Declan Mccormack, Steven Hinder, Suresh Pillai

Articles

Among the three commonly occurring phases (anatase, rutile, and brookite) of TiO2, the anatase form is reported to be the best photocatalyst due to the improved charge-carrier mobility and the greater number of surface hydroxyl groups. The anatase to rutile transition in titania photocatalysts usually occurs at a temperature between 500 °C to 700 °C. Development of a high temperature stable (above 1000 °C) anatase phase is important for various environmental applications (e.g. self-cleaning ceramic tiles, anti-microbial sanitary wares, etc.). In this study, the use of ammonium hexafluorophosphate as a single source dopant (method A) and urea, trifluoroacetic acid and …

Explicit Estimates On A Mixed Neumann-Robin-Cauchy Problem, Luisa Consiglieri Jan 2016

Explicit Estimates On A Mixed Neumann-Robin-Cauchy Problem, Luisa Consiglieri

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We deal with the existence of weak solutions for a mixed Neumann-Robin-Cauchy problem. The existence results are based on global-in-time estimates of approximating solutions, and the passage to the limit exploits compactness techniques. We investigate explicit estimates for solutions of the parabolic equations with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions and distributional right-hand sides. The parabolic equation is of divergence form with discontinuous coefficients. We consider a nonlinear condition on a part of the boundary such that the power laws (and the Robin boundary condition) appear as particular cases.

On The Nphss-Kpik Iteration Method For Low-Rank Complex Sylvester Equations Arising From Time-Periodic Fractional Diffusion Equations, Min-Li Zeng, Guo-Feng Zhang

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Based on the Hermitian and skew-Hermitian (HS) splitting for non-Hermitian matrices, a nonalternating preconditioned Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting-Krylov plus inverted Krylov subspace (NPHSS-KPIK) iteration method for solving a class of large and low-rank complex Sylvester equations arising from the two-dimensional time-periodic fractional diffusion problem is established. The local convergence condition is proposed and the optimal parameter is given. Numerical experiments are used to show the efficiency of the NPHSS-KPIK iteration method for solving the Sylvester equations arising from the time-periodic fractional diffusion equations.

Approximation Of $B$-Continuous And $B$-Differentiable Functions By Gbs Operators Of $Q$-Bernstein-Schurer-Stancu Type, Manjari Sidharth, Nurhayat İspi̇r, Purshottam Narain Agrawal Jan 2016

Approximation Of $B$-Continuous And $B$-Differentiable Functions By Gbs Operators Of $Q$-Bernstein-Schurer-Stancu Type, Manjari Sidharth, Nurhayat İspi̇r, Purshottam Narain Agrawal

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

B&acaron;rbosu and Muraru (2015) introduced the bivariate generalization of the $q$-Bernstein-Schurer-Stancu operators and constructed a GBS operator of $q$-Bernstein-Schurer-Stancu type. The concern of this paper is to obtain the rate of convergence in terms of the partial and complete modulus of continuity and the degree of approximation by means of Lipschitz-type class for the bivariate operators. In the last section we estimate the degree of approximation by means of Lipschitz class function and the rate of convergence with the help of mixed modulus of smoothness for the GBS operator of $q$-Bernstein-Schurer-Stancu type. Furthermore, we show comparisons by some illustrative graphics …

Uniqueness Of Entire Graphs In Riemannian Warped Products, Junhong Dong, Ximin Liu Jan 2016

Uniqueness Of Entire Graphs In Riemannian Warped Products, Junhong Dong, Ximin Liu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, by applying the generalized Omori-Yau maximum principle for complete spacelike hypersurfaces in warped product spaces, we obtain the sign relationship between the derivative of warping function and support function. Afterwards, by using this result and imposing suitable restrictions on the higher order mean curvatures, we establish uniqueness results for the entire graph in a Riemannian warped product space, which has a strictly monotone warping function. Furthermore, applications to such a space are given.

Relay Coordination Analysis And Protection Solutions For Smart Grid Distribution Systems, Mehmet Tan Turan, Erdi̇n Gökalp Jan 2016

Relay Coordination Analysis And Protection Solutions For Smart Grid Distribution Systems, Mehmet Tan Turan, Erdi̇n Gökalp

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Growing complexity of conventional power grids and their management, increasing power demand and energy quality expectations considering grid reliability, and efficiency and security concerns have triggered the evolution of smart grids. This is an expected result of implementing new technologies in existing grids, including renewable sources such as wind turbines and photovoltaic modules. With implementation of such new elements to the system, the protection concept should be considered by system regulators. In order to analyze protection problems, simulation-based analysis should be carried out before high-cost experimental studies. In this study, a simulation-based evaluation for a smart grid-based distribution system is …

Highly Non-Concurrent Longest Paths In Lattices, Yasir Bashir, Faisal Nadeem, Ayesha Shabbir

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we consider graphs in which any pair of vertices is missed by some longest path. We are proving the existence of such graphs in the infinite triangular, square and hexagonal lattices in the plane. Moreover, we extend our investigation to lattices on several surfaces such as the torus, the M\"obius strip and the Klein bottle.

Homothetic Motions With Dual Octonions In Dual $8-$Space, Hesna Kabadayi Jan 2016

Homothetic Motions With Dual Octonions In Dual $8-$Space, Hesna Kabadayi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, for dual octonions in dual $8-$space $D^{8}$ over the domain of coefficients $D,$ we give a matrix that is similar to a Hamilton operator. By means of this matrix a new motion is defined and this motion is proven to be homothetic. For this one parameter dual homothetic motion, we prove some theorems about dual velocities, dual pole points, and dual pole curves. Furthermore, after defining dual accelerations, we show that the motion defined by the regular order $m$ dual curve, at every $t$-instant, has only one acceleration center of order $\left( m-1\right) .$

Notes On Cotorsion Dimension Of Hopf--Galois Extensions, Xiaoyan Zhou, Min Wei Jan 2016

Notes On Cotorsion Dimension Of Hopf--Galois Extensions, Xiaoyan Zhou, Min Wei

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let $H$ be a finite dimensional Hopf algebra over a field $k$ and $A/B$ be a right $H$-Galois extension. In this note the relationship of cotorsion dimensions between $A$ and $B$ will be studied. We prove that $\mbox{r.cot.D}(A)\leq\mbox{r.cot.D}(B)+\mbox{l.D}(H)$. Moreover, we give some sufficient conditions for which $\mbox{r.cot.D}(A)=\mbox{r.cot.D}(B)$. As applications, we obtain some results about cotorsion dimension of the smash product.
