Algorithmic Fidelity And The Use Of Large Language Models In Social Science Research, Christopher Michael Rytting May 2023

Algorithmic Fidelity And The Use Of Large Language Models In Social Science Research, Christopher Michael Rytting

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we argue that large language models (LLMs) exhibit a considerable amount of \textit{algorithmic fidelity}, a property where they have modeled ideas, behaviors, and attitudes of the population who generated their training data. This has important implications for social science, as this fidelity theoretically allows for the use of LLMs as effective proxies for human beings in experiments and research. We demonstrate this empirically in various social science domains (political partisanship, demographic surveying, voting behavior, hot-button policy issues, news media, populism, congressional summaries), in various applications (replicating social science survey findings, assisting in coding of text datasets, inferring …

2023 Symposium

The Seli’š Ksanka Qlispe’ Dam (SKC Dam), formerly known as the Kerr Dam is the first Native American tribally owned dam in the United States. Located on the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes(CSKT) of the Flathead Reservation, on the Flathead River in Montana, the dam was once considered the blight of the Whiteman’s landgrab and genocide of culture and language. Now it is a source of hope to the tribe to help its members and improve its future. Completed in 1938, it is one of two dams on the Flathead River, just south of the Flathead Lake. By following the …

Néel Spin Currents In Antiferromagnets, Ding-Fu Shao, Yuan-Yuan Jiang, Jun Ding, Shu-Hui Zhang, Zi-An Wang, Rui-Chun Xiao, Gautam Gurung, W. J. Lu, Y. P. Sun, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Ferromagnets are known to support spin-polarized currents that control various spin-dependent transport phenomena useful for spintronics. On the contrary, fully compensated antiferromagnets are expected to support only globally spin-neutral currents. Here, we demonstrate that these globally spin-neutral currents can represent the Néel spin currents, i.e., staggered spin currents flowing through different magnetic sublattices. The Néel spin currents emerge in antiferromagnets with strong intrasublattice coupling (hopping) and drive the spin-dependent transport phenomena such as tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) and spin-transfer torque (STT) in antiferromagnetic tunnel junctions (AFMTJs). Using RuO2 and Fe4GeTe2 as representative antiferromagnets, we predict that the …

An Exploration Of The Latent Space Of A Convolutional Variational Autoencoder For The Generation Of Musical Instrument Tones, Anastasia Natsiou, Sean O'Leary, Luca Longo

Conference papers

Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) constitute one of the most significant deep generative models for the creation of synthetic samples. In the field of audio synthesis, VAEs have been widely used for the generation of natural and expressive sounds, such as music or speech. However, VAEs are often considered black boxes and the attributes that contribute to the synthesis of a sound are yet unsolved. Existing research focused on the way input data can influence the generation of latent space, and how this latent space can create synthetic data, is still insufficient. In this manuscript, we investigate the interpretability of the latent …

Aharonov–Bohm Effect With An Effective Complex-Valued Vector Potential, Ismael L. Paiva, Yakir Aharonov, Jeff Tollaksen, Mordecai Waegell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The interaction between a quantum charge and a dynamic source of a magnetic field is considered in the Aharonov–Bohm (AB) scenario. It is shown that, in weak interactions with a post-selection of the source, the effective vector potential is, generally, complex-valued. This leads to new experimental protocols to detect the AB phase before the source is fully encircled. While this does not necessarily change the nonlocal status of the AB effect, it brings new insights into it. Moreover, we discuss how these results might have consequences for the correspondence principle, making complex vector potentials relevant to the study of classical …

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Data play an important role in visual inspection tasks, but it is difficult to obtain a sufficient amount of real fixed-wing UAV data. Therefore, a data set containing a large number of simulated fixed-wing UAV data and a small number of real fixed-wing UAV data is constructed, and the real fixed-wing UAV data are detected by training simulated fixed-wing UAV data based on the idea of weight transfer. On this basis, a two-stage learning strategy is proposed to further reduce the missed detection rate of UAVs by using multi-scale feature fusion. The simulation results show that …

We evaluate the prospects for radio follow-up of the double neutron stars (DNSs) in the Galactic disk that could be detected through future space-borne gravitational wave (GW) detectors. We first simulate the DNS population in the Galactic disk that is accessible to space-borne GW detectors according to the merger rate from recent LIGO results. Using the inspiraling waveform for the eccentric binary, the average number of the DNSs detectable by TianQin (TQ), LISA, and TQ+LISA are 217, 368, and 429, respectively. For the joint GW detection of TQ+LISA, the forecasted parameter estimation accuracies, based on the Fisher information matrix, for …

Algorithmic Bias: Causes And Effects On Marginalized Communities, Katrina M. Baha May 2023

Algorithmic Bias: Causes And Effects On Marginalized Communities, Katrina M. Baha

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Individuals from marginalized backgrounds face different healthcare outcomes due to algorithmic bias in the technological healthcare industry. Algorithmic biases, which are the biases that arise from the set of steps used to solve or analyze a problem, are evident when people from marginalized communities use healthcare technology. For example, many pulse oximeters, which are the medical devices used to measure oxygen saturation in the blood, are not able to accurately read people who have darker skin tones. Thus, people with darker skin tones are not able to receive proper health care due to their pulse oximetry data being inaccurate. This …
