An Experimental Study Of Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable System-On-Chip-Based Software-Defined Radio, Janakiraman Nithiyanantham, Nirmal Kumar Palanisamy
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Software-defined radio (SDR) research deals with a mixture of hardware and software technologies, where RF operating parameters and components are to be set or altered by modifiable software or firmware. This paper describes the coarse-grained reconfigurable array (CGRA) implementations of SDR architecture. This architecture is an extension of traditional SDR in complex adaptation strategies, such as highly reliable communications and efficient utilization of the resources and spectrum upgrade, through its internal states (performance) and hardware architecture. The proposed CGRA-based SDR implementation is based on dynamic partial reconfiguration methodology, which has the capability of reusing the same hardware module to handle …

An Enhanced Multiinterface Multichannel Algorithm For High Quality Live Video Streaming Over Hybrid Wmns, Behrang Barekatain, Mohd Aizaini Maarof, Alfonso Ariza Quintana, Alicia Triviño-Cabrera, Hamid Reza Ghaeini
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Recently, providing live video streaming over hybrid wireless mesh networks (WMNs) has been of great interest. In this kind of network, most of the users usually move with low speed and always keep their connections within the network by attaching to different mesh routers (MRs). When evaluating a mesh technology, it is important to pay special attention to this kind of device as it is mostly handled by the final user. These devices, known as STA nodes, neither run a routing protocol nor perform forwarding operations. Although our proposed distributed locator service in GREENIE makes hybrid WMNs more efficient for …

Gender Classification: A Convolutional Neural Network Approach, Shan Sung Liew, Mohamed Khalil Hani, Syafeeza Ahmad Radzi, Rabia Bakhteri
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
An approach using a convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed for real-time gender classification based on facial images. The proposed CNN architecture exhibits a much reduced design complexity when compared with other CNN solutions applied in pattern recognition. The number of processing layers in the CNN is reduced to only four by fusing the convolutional and subsampling layers. Unlike in conventional CNNs, we replace the convolution operation with cross-correlation, hence reducing the computational load. The network is trained using a second-order backpropagation learning algorithm with annealed global learning rates. Performance evaluation of the proposed CNN solution is conducted on two …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A mathematical neural approach/artificial neural network (ANN) for the design of a swastika-shaped reconfigurable antenna as a feedforward side is proposed. Further design parameter calculations using the reverse procedure of the above method is presented. Neural network computational is one of the optimization methods that could be considered to improve the performance of the device. In this paper, the proposed planar antenna up to the 2nd iteration is simulated using finite element method-based HFSS software. The developed ANN algorithm method allows the optimization of the antenna to be carried out by exchanging repetitive simulations and also provides reduced processing times …

As a result of advances in solid-state power electronics, DC power distribution has found widespread usage due to its advantages. DC/DC converters, which are mainly used for voltage regulation, are fundamental components of DC power distribution systems. This paper presents a peak power controlled DC/DC converter design based on a two-layer hierarchical closed-loop control strategy for active DC power management. The proposed DC/DC converter design, called a power regulated DC/DC driver, limits output power according to current-voltage characteristic of a modified sigmoid function and it allows more secure and controllable power delivery in DC distribution buses. As a design example, …

Railroad transportation systems are an area that poses the threat of causing huge risk for both the environment and people if an error emerges during operation. For this reason, designing and developing relevant products in this area is challenging. What is more, methods to be utilized for the purposes of minimizing risk susceptibility are to be specified by international standards. While relevant standards strongly recommend that some methods be utilized based on the desired safety integrity level during the development phase, some methods are not recommended to be utilized. CENELEC 50128 strongly recommends the utilization of timed-arc Petri nets during …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, a novel virtual reality-based interactive method combined with the application of a graphical processing unit (GPU) is proposed for the semiautomatic segmentation of 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. The key point of our approach is to use haptic force feedback guidance for the selection of seed points in a bounded volume with similar intensity and gradient. For the automatic determination of a bounded volume of segmentation in real time, parallel computation on the GPU is used. Automatic segmentation is applied in this adjustable bounded spherical volume with a variable diameter, which is controlled according …

Effect Of Repetition Coding On The Ber Performance Of Interleave-Division Multiple Access Systems, Mehmet Bi̇li̇m, Nuri̇ Kapucu, İbrahi̇m Develi̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper investigates the bit error rate (BER) performance of interleave-division multiple access (IDMA) schemes to show the effect of repetition coding on the system performance. The considered system is tested in the presence of repetition coding by varying system parameters such as number of simultaneous users, data length, spread length, iteration number, and code rate over additive white Gaussian noise channels. In addition, the performance of the considered system is also illustrated in Rayleigh flat fading channels for a more realistic scenario. Our simulation results show that the BER performance of IDMA systems with repetition coding can achieve significant …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper provides an analysis of RC and RL electrical circuits described by a fractional difierential equation of Caputo type. The order considered is ${0 \textless \gamma }\le ${ 1}. The Laplace transform of the fractional derivative is used. To keep the dimensionality of the physical quantities, R, C, L, and an auxiliary parameter $\sigma $ are introduced, characterizing the existence of fractional components in the system. The relationship between $\gamma$ and $\sigma $ is reported. The response obtained from the fractional RC and RL circuits exhibits the characteristic behaviors of a cap-resistor, memcapacitor, and memristor, as well as charge-voltage …

A Simple Hybrid Method For Segmenting Vessel Structures In Retinal Fundus Images, Cemal Köse
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, a simple, fast, and efficient hybrid segmentation method is presented for extracting vessel structures in retinal fundus images. Basically, this hybrid approach combines circular and naive Bayes classifiers to extract blood vessels in retinal fundus images. The circular method samples pixels along the enlarging circles centered at the current pixel and classifies the current pixel as vessel or nonvessel. An elimination technique is then employed to eliminate the nonvessel fragments from the processed image. The naive Bayes method as a supervised technique uses a very small set of features to segment retinal vessels in retinal images. The …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Two fractional differential controllers, described and validated by using the fractional order stability theorem and the Gershgorin circle theorem for a self-sustained electromechanical system consisting of a van der Pol-Duffing coupled oscillator, were studied in this paper. Based on the idea of a nonlinear observer, a new method for generalized synchronization (GS) of this system is proposed. Finally, the circuit simulation results demonstrate the correctness and the effectiveness of the proposed control and GS strategy.

An Efficient Hybrid Eye Detection Method, Mingxin Yu, Yingzi Lin, Xiangzhou Wang
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Eye detection is the most important and critical task of diverse applications such as face detection and recognition. However, most eye detection methods do not fully consider detection robustness to people with glasses, illumination variation, head pose change, and eye occlusions. This paper proposes an efficient hybrid eye detection method based on a gray intensity variance filter (VF) and support vector machines (SVMs). Firstly, the VF is used for eliminating most of noneye region images to keep less candidate eye regions. Then accurate two eye regions are determined easily through the trained SVM classifier. Moreover, this paper provides an assessment …

Wideband Analysis Of Planar Scalable Antennas And Pec Bodies Using Cbfm, Sema Nur Koç, Adnan Köksal
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, scattering and radiation from scalable planar bodies are investigated in a wide frequency band. Characteristic basis functions (CBFs) are utilized for this purpose with a different approach. The CBFs for the body are calculated at the highest frequency of interest and reused at other frequencies. As the frequency decreases, the unnecessary CBFs are removed from the basis set. The reduced impedance matrices generated at lower frequencies are also used for the calculation of the ones at higher frequencies. As a result, a significant reduction in CPU time is obtained with the proposed method. Numerical results for the …

A Facial Component-Based System For Emotion Classification, Elena Sönmez, Songül Albayrak
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Smart environments with ubiquitous computers are the next generation of information technology, which requires improved human--computer interfaces. That is, the computer of the future must be aware of the people in its environment; it must know their identities and must understand their moods. Despite the great effort made in the past decades, the development of a system capable of automatic facial emotion recognition is still rather difficult. In this paper, we challenge the benchmark algorithm on emotion classification of the Extended Cohn-Kanade (CK$+)$ database, and we present a facial component-based system for emotion classification, which beats the given benchmark performance: …

Optimal Power Flow By Considering System Security Cost And Small Signal Stability Constraints, Mohammad Sarvi, Mohammad Reza Salimian
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The main objective of optimal power flow is to find the proper operating point for the power system. In this paper, the optimal power flow by considering system security cost (OPFSC) and the small signal stability constraint is presented. For this purpose, the total profit of the system by considering the system constraints is optimized. The total profit of the system is equal to the combination of profit from the active power consumption, active power generation cost, and system security cost. System security cost includes the cost of load shedding, which is computed for all contingencies that may occur in …

Reinforcement Learning-Based Mobile Robot Navigation, Ni̇hal Altuntaş, Erkan İmal, Nahi̇t Emanet, Ceyda Nur Öztürk
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In recent decades, reinforcement learning (RL) has been widely used in different research fields ranging from psychology to computer science. The unfeasibility of sampling all possibilities for continuous-state problems and the absence of an explicit teacher make RL algorithms preferable for supervised learning in the machine learning area, as the optimal control problem has become a popular subject of research. In this study, a system is proposed to solve mobile robot navigation by opting for the most popular two RL algorithms, Sarsa($\lambda )$ and Q($\lambda )$. The proposed system, developed in MATLAB, uses state and action sets, defined in a …

A New Fuzzy Membership Assignment And Model Selection Approach Based On Dynamic Class Centers For Fuzzy Svm Family Using The Firefly Algorithm, Omid Naghash Almasi, Modjtaba Rouhani
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The support vector machine (SVM) is a powerful tool for classification problems. Unfortunately, the training phase of the SVM is highly sensitive to noises in the training set. Noises are inevitable in real-world applications. To overcome this problem, the SVM was extended to a fuzzy SVM by assigning an appropriate fuzzy membership to each data point. However, suitable choice of fuzzy memberships and an accurate model selection raise fundamental issues. In this paper, we propose a new method based on optimization methods to simultaneously generate appropriate fuzzy membership and solve the model selection problem for the SVM family in linear/nonlinear …

Penalty Factor-Based Optimization Algorithm For Distributed Generation Sizing In Distribution Network, Jasrul Jamani Jamian, Mohd Nabil Bin Muhtazaruddin, Muhammad Ariff Baharuddin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The installation of distributed generation (DG) can be used to minimize the total power loss in the distribution network. Besides that, other power system performances such as voltage profile, stability index, and total harmonic distortion can also be improved via DG. Although many works on DG have been done, most researchers have assumed that the distribution line is in an ideal condition (unlimited capacity limit). On the contrary, all practical lines should have their own capacity limit. Therefore, the main contribution of this paper is to determine the optimal DG output that can fulfill the maximum allowable line capacity limit …

An Intelligent Design Optimization Of A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor By Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm, Mümtaz Mutluer, Osman Bi̇lgi̇n
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The artificial bee colony algorithm is one of the latest stochastic methods based on swarm intelligence. The algorithm simulates the foraging behavior of honeybees. The structure of the algorithm is quite simple and its coding is very easy. This paper proposes a design optimization based on geometrical variables to obtain a highly efficient surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor with concentrated winding by use of the artificial bee colony algorithm. Input parameters for the algorithm are the geometrical variables of the motor. This approach is more advantageous than finite element analysis requiring a long period of time. Results of the artificial …

Finger-Vein Biometric Identification Using Convolutional Neural Network, Syafeeza Ahmad Radzi, Mohamed Khalil Hani, Rabia Bakhteri
Finger-Vein Biometric Identification Using Convolutional Neural Network, Syafeeza Ahmad Radzi, Mohamed Khalil Hani, Rabia Bakhteri
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A novel approach using a convolutional neural network (CNN) for finger-vein biometric identification is presented in this paper. Unlike existing biometric techniques such as fingerprint and face, vein patterns are inside the body, making them virtually impossible to replicate. This also makes finger-vein biometrics a more secure alternative without being susceptible to forgery, damage, or change with time. In conventional finger-vein recognition methods, complex image processing is required to remove noise and extract and enhance the features before the image classification can be performed in order to achieve high performance accuracy. In this regard, a significant advantage of the CNN …

Classification Of Short-Circuit Faults In High-Voltage Energy Transmission Line Using Energy Of Instantaneous Active Power Components-Based Common Vector Approach, Mehmet Yumurtaci, Gökhan Gökmen, Çağri Kocaman, Semi̇h Ergi̇n, Osman Kiliç
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The majority of power system faults occur in transmission lines. The classification of these faults in power systems is an important issue. In this paper, the real parameters of a 28 km, 154 kV transmission line between Simav and Demirci in Turkey's electricity transmission network is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink. Wavelet packet transform (WPT) is applied to instantaneous voltage signals. Instantaneous active power components are obtained by multiplying instantaneous currents obtained from a voltage source side with these WPT-based voltage signal components. A new feature vector extraction scheme is employed by calculating the energies of instantaneous active power components. Constructed feature …

Some Properties Of Digital H-Spaces, Özgür Ege, İsmet Karaca
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we study certain properties of digital H-spaces. We prove that a digital image that has the same digital homotopy type with any digital H-space is also a digital H-space. We show that the digital fundamental group of a digital H-space is abelian. We give examples that are related to a digital homotopy associative H-space and a $\kappa $-contractible digital H-space. Several important applications of digital H-spaces are given in computer vision and image processing. Finally, we deal with the importance of digital H-space in digital topology and image processing. We conclude that any $\kappa $-contractible digital image …
Application Of Kappa Statistics In Sequential Tests For Family-Based Design, Farid Rajabli
Application Of Kappa Statistics In Sequential Tests For Family-Based Design, Farid Rajabli
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Family-based designs are commonly used in genetic association studies to locate markers associated with diseases. It is a challenging task to collect a large enough sample size, perform a statistical test, and obtain the desired statistical power. The sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) was introduced to overcome the limited sample size problem. However, the drawback of SPRT is that, for the sake of accuracy, the test leaves many markers in a gray zone meaning ``no decision''. In this article, we propose a novel approach: a sequential probability ratio test `plus' (SPRT$+)$ to reduce the number of these gray zone markers. …

inverter is presented in this paper. This configuration cancels the redundancy of output voltage steps and maximizes the number of levels in the output voltage. This structure is built by using series connected stages, which minimize the number of semiconductor switches, gate drive arrangements, occupying area, and cost. It is a modular type inverter model and the number of voltage levels can be increased by adding new stages without changing the previous connection. Space vector modulation has been applied as the control strategy. A prototype of the proposed inverter topology has been built in the laboratory. The attached hardware results …

the accuracy of an inertial navigation system alone. However, its implementation complexity has been a challenge to most embedded systems. This paper proposes a low-cost FPGA-based INS-GPS integration system, which consists of a Kalman filter and a soft processor. Moreover, we also evaluate the navigation algorithm on a low-cost ARM processor. Processing times and localization accuracy are compared in both cases for single and double precision floating-point format. Experimental results show the advantages of the FPGA-based approach over the ARM-based approach. The proposed architecture can operate at 100 Hz and demonstrates the advantage of using FPGAs to design low-cost INS-GPS …

The objective of this paper is to estimate the values of five parameters ($A$, $R_{se}$, $ R_{sh}$, $ I_{LG}$, and $I_{sat})$ of a PV module more accurately and to extract the maximum power point (MPP) accurately under varying environmental conditions. Suitable new equations are proposed, by which the values of the series and shunt resistances are initialized in order to obtain good convergence speed in the Gauss--Seidel method. In this work, two new equations are proposed to find the ideality factor and shunt resistance and to obtain accurate MPP of the PV model under varying environmental conditions. The proposed PV …
