Cp-Nets: From Theory To Practice, Thomas E. Allen Jan 2016

Cp-Nets: From Theory To Practice, Thomas E. Allen

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Conditional preference networks (CP-nets) exploit the power of ceteris paribus rules to represent preferences over combinatorial decision domains compactly. CP-nets have much appeal. However, their study has not yet advanced sufficiently for their widespread use in real-world applications. Known algorithms for deciding dominance---whether one outcome is better than another with respect to a CP-net---require exponential time. Data for CP-nets are difficult to obtain: human subjects data over combinatorial domains are not readily available, and earlier work on random generation is also problematic. Also, much of the research on CP-nets makes strong, often unrealistic assumptions, such as that decision variables must …

Modeling, Learning And Reasoning About Preference Trees Over Combinatorial Domains, Xudong Liu Jan 2016

Modeling, Learning And Reasoning About Preference Trees Over Combinatorial Domains, Xudong Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

In my Ph.D. dissertation, I have studied problems arising in various aspects of preferences: preference modeling, preference learning, and preference reasoning, when preferences concern outcomes ranging over combinatorial domains. Preferences is a major research component in artificial intelligence (AI) and decision theory, and is closely related to the social choice theory considered by economists and political scientists. In my dissertation, I have exploited emerging connections between preferences in AI and social choice theory. Most of my research is on qualitative preference representations that extend and combine existing formalisms such as conditional preference nets, lexicographic preference trees, answer-set optimization programs, possibilistic …

Topics On Register Synthesis Problems, Weihua Liu Jan 2016

Topics On Register Synthesis Problems, Weihua Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Pseudo-random sequences are ubiquitous in modern electronics and information technology. High speed generators of such sequences play essential roles in various engineering applications, such as stream ciphers, radar systems, multiple access systems, and quasi-Monte-Carlo simulation. Given a short prefix of a sequence, it is undesirable to have an efficient algorithm that can synthesize a generator which can predict the whole sequence. Otherwise, a cryptanalytic attack can be launched against the system based on that given sequence.

Linear feedback shift registers (LFSRs) are the most widely studied pseudorandom sequence generators. The LFSR synthesis problem can be solved by the Berlekamp-Massey algorithm, …

Preferences: Optimization, Importance Learning And Strategic Behaviors, Ying Zhu Jan 2016

Preferences: Optimization, Importance Learning And Strategic Behaviors, Ying Zhu

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Preferences are fundamental to decision making and play an important role in artificial intelligence. Our research focuses on three group of problems based on the preference formalism Answer Set Optimization (ASO): preference aggregation problems such as computing optimal (near optimal) solutions, strategic behaviors in preference representation, and learning ranks (weights) for preferences.

In the first group of problems, of interest are optimal outcomes, that is, outcomes that are optimal with respect to the preorder defined by the preference rules. In this work, we consider computational problems concerning optimal outcomes. We propose, implement and study methods to compute an optimal outcome; …

Secure And Authenticated Message Dissemination In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks And An Incentive-Based Architecture For Vehicular Cloud, Kiho Lim Jan 2016

Secure And Authenticated Message Dissemination In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks And An Incentive-Based Architecture For Vehicular Cloud, Kiho Lim

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Vehicular ad hoc Networks (VANETs) allow vehicles to form a self-organized network. VANETs are likely to be widely deployed in the future, given the interest shown by industry in self-driving cars and satisfying their customers various interests. Problems related to Mobile ad hoc Networks (MANETs) such as routing, security, etc.have been extensively studied. Even though VANETs are special type of MANETs, solutions proposed for MANETs cannot be directly applied to VANETs because all problems related to MANETs have been studied for small networks. Moreover, in MANETs, nodes can move randomly. On the other hand, movement of nodes in VANETs are …

A Systematic Study Of The Effect Of Spin-Orbit Interaction On Properties Of Tetravalent And Pentavalent Iridate Compounds, Jasminka Terzic Jan 2016

A Systematic Study Of The Effect Of Spin-Orbit Interaction On Properties Of Tetravalent And Pentavalent Iridate Compounds, Jasminka Terzic

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Previous studies of iridates have shown that an interplay of strong SOI, Coulomb interaction U, Hund’s rule coupling and crystalline electric fields result in unexpected insulating states with complex magnetic states. The novel Jeff =1/2 insulating state first observed in Sr2IrO4 is a direct consequence of such an intriguing interplay and is one of the central foci of this dissertation study.

The work presented here consists of three projects: (1) Effects of Tb doping on Sr2IrO4 having tetravalent Ir4+(5d5) ions; (2) Emergence of unexpected magnetic states in double-perovskite (Ba …

Lattice Qcd Calculation Of The Momentum Fraction Carried By Quarks In The Nucleon, And The Roper Puzzle, Mingyang Sun Jan 2016

Lattice Qcd Calculation Of The Momentum Fraction Carried By Quarks In The Nucleon, And The Roper Puzzle, Mingyang Sun

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

This thesis is concerned with the lattice QCD calculation of the momentum fraction carried by quarks in the nucleon. Particularly, the strange quark contribution, (x)s, is calculated, as well as the ratio of the strange (x) to that of u/d in the disconnected insertion which will be useful in constraining the global fit of parton distribution functions at small x. The disconnected insertion is known to be hard to calculate on the lattice. We adopt the overlap fermion action on several 2 + 1 flavor domain-wall fermion ensembles with a light sea quark mass which corresponds to pion …

Physical And Electronic Properties Of Nanoscale 2d Materials, Mathias J. Boland Jan 2016

Physical And Electronic Properties Of Nanoscale 2d Materials, Mathias J. Boland

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

There is a great push towards reducing the size scale of both electronic components and machines. Two dimensional materials, such as graphene, are ideal candidates towards this push, as they are naturally atomically thin. In the case of nanoscale machines, the mechanical properties of the material surfaces become increasingly important. The use of laminar materials, such as graphene and MoS2, to modify the surface properties, yet maintain nanoscale topographical features, are very attractive. Towards this goal, we have investigated the surface properties of MoS2 at the nanoscale using Lateral Force Microscopy (LFM). In these investigations, we measure …

Interactions Among Hydrology, Sediment And Vegetation In Accreting Wax Lake Delta: Physical And Biogeochemical Implications For Coastal Louisiana Restoration, Courtney Erin Elliton

LSU Master's Theses

River discharge pulses, wind, waves, tides, and the presence of dense vegetation are factors that interact and regulate the transport and retention of sediment in coastal regions. In particular, vegetation structural and physiognomic traits promote fine sediment trapping during tidal and river flow, maintaining the balance between soil elevation and relative sea level rise on coastline stability and land building. Mike Island, located within Wax Lake Delta, Louisiana, USA, is part of a deltaic system created by a man-made freshwater diversion (1941) and one of few coastal areas where land is expanding in coastal Louisiana as result of pulsing river …

An Empirical Estimate Of Post-Lgm Grounding-Event Duration In Eastern Ross Sea: Implications From A Comparison With Constraints From New Radiocarbon Dates, Benjamin Krogmeier Jan 2016

An Empirical Estimate Of Post-Lgm Grounding-Event Duration In Eastern Ross Sea: Implications From A Comparison With Constraints From New Radiocarbon Dates, Benjamin Krogmeier

LSU Master's Theses

The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) advanced to the outer shelf during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) before beginning a rapid retreat to the inner shelf. In the Whales Deep paleo-ice-stream trough, subsurface and geomorphologic evidence shows that grounding-line retreat was interrupted by at least five pauses in the area between the shelf edge and the middle shelf. During the pauses, an overlapping cluster of backstepped grounding zone wedges (GZWs) was deposited. Each GZW represents a grounding event, i.e., a time interval during which the grounding-line position was relatively stable. Seismic correlation and isopach mapping show that the cluster has …

Spatiotemporal Distribution Of The Himalayan Leucogranite: Implications For Mountain-Building As A Function Of Indian Slab Dynamics, Hongcheng Guo Jan 2016

Spatiotemporal Distribution Of The Himalayan Leucogranite: Implications For Mountain-Building As A Function Of Indian Slab Dynamics, Hongcheng Guo

LSU Master's Theses

The Himalayan orogen, as a natural laboratory for continental collision, has attracted intense research attention for decades. However, the question of how the orogen was built is still debated, and potential answers are few when considering how and why along-strike variations of the mountain-building processes occurred. Various tectonic models have been proposed to explain the kinematics of the mountain-building. These models include two dimensional models, such as wedge extrusion (Burchfiel and Royden, 1985; Grujic et al., 1996; Kohn, 2008), channel flow coupled to focused denudation (Beaumont et al., 2001; Hodges et al., 2001), tectonic wedging (Yin, 2006; Webb et al., …

Biophysical Characterization Of A Proline Mutant Of Neural Cadherin, Keshia S. Dykes Jan 2016

Biophysical Characterization Of A Proline Mutant Of Neural Cadherin, Keshia S. Dykes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cadherins are calcium dependent glycoproteins whose homophilic interactions mediate cell-cell adhesion in solid tissues. They are comprised of an extracellular region, a transmembrane region and a cytoplasmic region. The extracellular region plays a critical role in cadherin-mediated cell adhesion, and has five tandemly repeated ectodomains (ec1-ec5), with three calcium binding sites situated in each interface between the domains. Dimerization of cadherin occurs through formation of adhesive interactions between extracellular domains of cadherins from neighboring cells. Adhesive interaction occurs at the interfaces of ec1 domains of two molecules originating from different cell surfaces. Dimerization is critically dependent on the binding of …

Characterization Of Charge Accommodation In Biologically Important Hydrogen-Bonded Clusters, John Thomas Kelly Jan 2016

Characterization Of Charge Accommodation In Biologically Important Hydrogen-Bonded Clusters, John Thomas Kelly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The underlying motivation of chemical physics and physical chemistry is to understand naturally occurring chemical and physical processes from the nanoscopic molecular level to the macroscopic condensed phase. Over the past half-century, experimentalists have developed a number of laser-based analytical techniques to bridge the gap between the bulk phase and the single molecule. Here, we look at bulk phase and gas phase clusters to compare the local hydrogen-bonded network. To better understand the role noncovalent interactions have on biologically relevant building blocks in a natural environment, we compare the microhydration of gas phase cluster ions to condensed phase spectra. The …

Archean Geodynamic Conditions Using P-T Constraints Of The East Pilbara Craton Ttgs, Andrew Kody Webb Jan 2016

Archean Geodynamic Conditions Using P-T Constraints Of The East Pilbara Craton Ttgs, Andrew Kody Webb

LSU Master's Theses

We know very little about the tectonic setting present during the Hadean, but based on studies of surviving Hadean zircons, we know that a Hadean protocrust must have been established by at least 4.4 Ga (Kemp et al. 2010), and it must have also been able to accommodate minimum melt conditions (Harrison 2005). Tectonic models for Earth during the Hadean and Archean follow two trends: uniformitarianism and non-uniformitarianism. Uniformitarian models (following the famed geological concept that the present is the key to the past) argue that Hadean zircons and Archean rocks formed via processes akin to modern-style oceanic crust production …

Using Tourmaline As An Indicator Of Provenance: Development And Application Of A Statistical Approach Using Random Forests, Erin Lael Walden Jan 2016

Using Tourmaline As An Indicator Of Provenance: Development And Application Of A Statistical Approach Using Random Forests, Erin Lael Walden

LSU Master's Theses

Tourmaline is a petrologic indicator mineral that is the major repository of boron in the earth’s crust. It forms readily when boron is present, accommodating multiple cations and anions with multiple possible substitutions for each site in the crystal structure. It is stable over a wide variety of pressures and temperatures, from near-surface P/T conditions to greater than 950 C and 7 GPa. It records information about conditions of formation, as well as pressure and temperature. Due to its resistance to chemical or physical weathering, and the negligible diffusion of elements in the crystal lattice, information about provenance is preserved. …

Raft Polymerization Of Ph-Responsive, Diblock Copolymers For Nucleic Acid Delivery Vehicles, Annie Katherine Mcclellan Jan 2016

Raft Polymerization Of Ph-Responsive, Diblock Copolymers For Nucleic Acid Delivery Vehicles, Annie Katherine Mcclellan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the development of gene therapy, a variety of non-viral nucleic acid delivery vehicles have been prepared and studied for their transfection efficiencies. Recently, polymeric gene delivery vehicles have gained popularity for their low immunogenicity and high transfection efficiency. With the advent of controlled radical polymerization (CRP) and more specifically reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, it is now possible to develop well-defined polymers with predicted molecular weights and architectures. The work presented here focuses on the RAFT polymerization of a family of amphiphilic, cationic copolymers to be utilized for nucleic acid delivery. These copolymers are composed of a stabilizing …

Gas Exchange Of Hg Over Wetlands, Effect Of Biochar And Activated Carbon On Hg Emissions From Soil, And Seasonal Concentrations Of Hg In Rain, Divya Nallamothu Jan 2016

Gas Exchange Of Hg Over Wetlands, Effect Of Biochar And Activated Carbon On Hg Emissions From Soil, And Seasonal Concentrations Of Hg In Rain, Divya Nallamothu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant with human-health and ecological impacts. Gaseous Hg exchange between the atmosphere and aquatic or terrestrial surfaces serves as an important, but not well understood, route for Hg to enter and exit ecosystems. To better understand the role of gaseous Hg exchange in the biogeochemical cycling of Hg, we investigated Hg0 fluxes over natural wetlands (Sky Lake) and artificial wetlands (UM Field Station) using a dynamic flux chamber and an Hg vapor analyzer based on atomic fluorescence (Chapter 1). We also examined the effect of activated carbon and biochar on Hg emissions from soils for …

Obstacle-Aware Wireless Video Sensor Network Deployment For 3d Indoor Space Monitoring, Zhonghui Wang Jan 2016

Obstacle-Aware Wireless Video Sensor Network Deployment For 3d Indoor Space Monitoring, Zhonghui Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years wireless video sensors networks (WVSNs) have emerged as a leading technology for monitoring 3D indoor space in campus, industrial and medical areas as well as other types of environments. In contrast to traditional sensors such as heat or light sensors often considered with omnidirectional sensing range, the sensing range of a video sensor is directional and can be deemed as a pyramid-shape in 3D. Moreover, in an indoor environment, there are often obstacles such as lamp stands or furniture, which introduce additional challenges and further render the deployment solutions for traditional sensors and 2D sensing field inapplicable …

The Effect Of Hyperparameters In The Activation Layers Of Deep Neural Networks, Clay Lafayette Mcleod Jan 2016

The Effect Of Hyperparameters In The Activation Layers Of Deep Neural Networks, Clay Lafayette Mcleod

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Deep neural networks (DNNs), and artificial neural networks (ANNs) in general, have recently received a great amount of attention from both the media and the machine learning community at large. DNNs have been used to produce world-class results in a variety of domains, including image recognition, speech recognition, sequence modeling, and natural language processing. Many of most exciting recent deep neural network studies have made improvements by hardcoding less about the network and giving the neural network more control over its own parameters, allowing flexibility and control within the network. Although much research has been done to introduce trainable hyperparameters …

Reducing Cache Contention On Gpus, Kyoshin Choo Jan 2016

Reducing Cache Contention On Gpus, Kyoshin Choo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The usage of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) as an application accelerator has become increasingly popular because, compared to traditional CPUs, they are more cost-effective, their highly parallel nature complements a CPU, and they are more energy efficient. With the popularity of GPUs, many GPU-based compute-intensive applications (a.k.a., GPGPUs) present significant performance improvement over traditional CPU-based implementations. Caches, which significantly improve CPU performance, are introduced to GPUs to further enhance application performance. However, the effect of caches is not significant for many cases in GPUs and even detrimental for some cases. The massive parallelism of the GPU execution model and the …

On Topological Indices And Domination Numbers Of Graphs, Shaohui Wang Jan 2016

On Topological Indices And Domination Numbers Of Graphs, Shaohui Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Topological indices and dominating problems are popular topics in Graph Theory. There are various topological indices such as degree-based topological indices, distance-based topological indices and counting related topological indices et al. These topological indices correlate certain physicochemical properties such as boiling point, stability of chemical compounds. The concepts of domination number and independent domination number, introduced from the mid-1860s, are very fundamental in Graph Theory. In this dissertation, we provide new theoretical results on these two topics. We study k-trees and cactus graphs with the sharp upper and lower bounds of the degree-based topological indices(Multiplicative Zagreb indices). The extremal cacti …

The work covered in this dissertation seek to gain insight into the phase diagram of PMN-PT using temperature and pressure dependence of the elastic properties. Single crystal PMN-PT with a composition near morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) was investigated using a resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) methodologies in the temperature range of 293 K - 800 K and the pressure range from near vacuum to 3.4 MPa. At atmospheric pressure, significantly high acoustic …

The Porosity And Permeability Distribution Of The Shoal Grainstone And Thrombolitic Facies Of The Smackover Formation In Little Cedar Creek And Brooklyn Fields In Southwestern Alabama, Devin Thomas Jan 2016

The Porosity And Permeability Distribution Of The Shoal Grainstone And Thrombolitic Facies Of The Smackover Formation In Little Cedar Creek And Brooklyn Fields In Southwestern Alabama, Devin Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Smackover Formation is the most prolific hydrocarbon producer in Alabama, with the Little Cedar Creek and Brooklyn Fields being the two largest producers in Alabama. Unlike other Smackover fields Little Cedar Creek Field and Brooklyn Field production is the result of two reservoirs, known as the shoal grainstone and thrombolite (microbial) boundstone. Even with the success of the Smackover Formation, geographic trends of the porosity and permeability are problematic because production is affected. The distribution of the facies also plays a role in the porosity and permeability. The objective of this study is to delineate porosity and permeability trends …

Articles

We investigated how to control the growth of vertically aligned graphene on C-face SiC by varying the processing conditions. It is found that, the growth rate scales with the annealing temperature and the graphene height is proportional to the annealing time. Temperature gradient and crystalline quality of the SiC substrates influence their vaporization. The partial vapor pressure is crucial as it can interfere with further vaporization. A growth mechanism is proposed in terms of physical vapor transport. The monolayer character of vertically aligned graphene is verified by Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. With the processed samples, d0 magnetism is realized …

The planned HL-LHC (High Luminosity LHC) in 2025 is being designed to maximise the physics potential through a sizable increase in the luminosity up to 6centerdot1034 cm−2s−1. A consequence of this increased luminosity is the expected radiation damage at 3000 fb−1 after ten years of operation, requiring the tracking detectors to withstand fluences to over 1centerdot1016 1 MeV neq/cm2. In order to cope with the consequent increased readout rates, a complete re-design of the current ATLAS Inner Detector (ID) is being developed as the Inner Tracker (ITk).
