This work is dedicated to constructing a multi-scale structural health monitoring system to monitor and evaluate the serviceability of bridges based on the Hadoop Ecosystem (MS-SHM-Hadoop). By taking the advantages of the fault-tolerant distributed file system called the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and high-performance parallel data processing engine called MapReduce programming paradigm, MS-SHM-Hadoop features include high scalability and robustness in data ingestion, fusion, processing, retrieval, and analytics. MS-SHM-Hadoop is a multi-scale reliability analysis framework, which ranges from nationwide bridge-surveys, global structural integrity analysis, and structural component reliability analysis. This Nationwide bridge survey uses deep-learning techniques to evaluate the bridge …
Deep Models For Brain Em Image Segmentation: Novel Insights And Improved Performance, Ahmed Fakhry, Hanchuan Peng, Shuiwang Ji
Deep Models For Brain Em Image Segmentation: Novel Insights And Improved Performance, Ahmed Fakhry, Hanchuan Peng, Shuiwang Ji
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Motivation: Accurate segmentation of brain electron microscopy (EM) images is a critical step in dense circuit reconstruction. Although deep neural networks (DNNs) have been widely used in a number of applications in computer vision, most of these models that proved to be effective on image classification tasks cannot be applied directly to EM image segmentation, due to the different objectives of these tasks. As a result, it is desirable to develop an optimized architecture that uses the full power of DNNs and tailored specifically for EM image segmentation.
Results: In this work, we proposed a novel design of DNNs for …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Polyhalogenated Boron Dipyrromethenes And Carboranylbisthiophene Oligomers, Ning Zhao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Chapter 1 of this dissertation shows a brief overview of fundamental concepts and classic synthetic routes of BODIPY dyes. The synthetic strategies and various application (e.g. PDT sensitizers and fluorescent indicators) of halogenated BODIPYs are also presented in this chapter. Chapters 2-4 describe the synthesis of three new polyhalogenated BODIPY platforms and their regioselective functionalization. Such new platforms provide new methodologies for producing both symmetric and asymmetric BODIPYs. Pd(0)-catalyzed cross-couplings and aromatic substitution reactions were applied to investigate the reactivity and regioselectivity of different halogen groups on the BODIPY platforms. The studies showed that the reactivity order of the halogens …

Use Of X-Ray K-Edge Tomography And Interferometry Imaging Techniques For The Studies Of Brominated Flame Retardants, Mutairu Bolaji Olatinwo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The work presented in this dissertation is based on the studies of flame retardancy performance of various formulations consisting of brominated flame retardants (BFRs: Saytex 8010 and Green Armor) and their synergist, antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) in high impact polystyrene (HIPS). Chemical flame retardants are incorporated in polymers to improve their flame inhibition for optimal applications in electrical and electronic devices, furniture, printers and more. These flame retardant polymer blends are studied using the Underwriters Laboratory vertical burn test (UL 94) and X-ray imaging techniques such as X-ray K-edge absorption tomography and X-ray grating interferometry. The UL 94 burn test is …
Temporal Dynamics Of Benthic Responses To Habitat Disturbance In Coastal Plain Headwaters Of Southwestern Louisiana, Catherine Elizabeth Murphy
Temporal Dynamics Of Benthic Responses To Habitat Disturbance In Coastal Plain Headwaters Of Southwestern Louisiana, Catherine Elizabeth Murphy
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Weak biotic responses to habitat gradients within Northern Gulf of Mexico streams have been attributed to spatial and temporal variability. Landscape and in-stream habitat descriptions are presented for watersheds within Pleistocene terraces of the Coastal Plains geomorphic province of Louisiana, USA. Geologic influences on stream habitat were inferred by comparing multivariate ordinations on physicochemical measurements between terraces. Seasonal variability was assessed during a drought year (2011) and a typical water year (2013). Within coastal plains of Louisiana, stream condition was more similar within terraces than within river basins. Permutational MANOVA models indicated significantly different stream habitat between Uplands and Prairie, …
Particulate Inorganic Carbon Flux And Sediment Transport Dynamics In Karst: Significance To Landscape Evolution And The Carbon Cycle., Randall Lee Paylor
Particulate Inorganic Carbon Flux And Sediment Transport Dynamics In Karst: Significance To Landscape Evolution And The Carbon Cycle., Randall Lee Paylor
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Research focused on three areas of karst hydrogeology and sediment transport that have been poorly studied in the past: the role of particulate inorganic carbon transport in calculating carbon sink rates in karst; rapid changes in surface vs. subsurface sediment mixing in karst conduits; and comparison of landscape denudation calculations using dissolved carbonate load vs. total dissolved/sediment load. Carbonate bedrock weathering is a significant component of the atmospheric carbon sink. Particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) in bed and suspended sediment load of karst waters is frequently dismissed as insignificant for calculating denudation and carbon transport/sink rates, but PIC flux has not …
Peptidomimetic Polymers: Advances In Monomer Design And Polymerization Methods, Brandon Andrew Chan
Peptidomimetic Polymers: Advances In Monomer Design And Polymerization Methods, Brandon Andrew Chan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This work is focused on the design, synthesis and characterization of polypeptide and polypeptoid polymers. The former are composed of amino acid repeat units and possess intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions allowing for the self-assembly into well-defined secondary structures (e.g. α-helix). Polypeptoids are based on N-alkyl substituted glycine and lack intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions, resulting in enhanced proteolytic stability and thermal processability. Physicochemical properties of polypeptoids are strongly dependent on the side chain structures, allow for control of the solubility, crystallinity, and conformation of the polymers. Well-defined polypeptides and polypeptoids are synthesized by the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of their corresponding N-carboxyanhydride …
Circumstellar Dust Shells: Clues To The Evolution Of R Coronae Borealis Stars, Edward Joseph Montiel
Circumstellar Dust Shells: Clues To The Evolution Of R Coronae Borealis Stars, Edward Joseph Montiel
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The existence of extended, cold dust envelopes surrounding R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars has been known about for over 30 years. RCB stars are an exotic group of extremely hydrogen-deficient, carbon-rich supergiants that are known for their spectacular declines in brightness (up to 8 mags) at irregular intervals. There are three possible origins of these envelopes: (1) they are fossil planetary nebulae (PNe), indicating that RCB stars formed via a final Helium-shell flash; (2) they are the remnant material from the merger of a CO and a He white dwarf binary, (3) they have been constructed from dust ejection events …

Evolution Semigroups For Well-Posed, Non-Autonomous Evolution Families, Austin Keith Scirratt
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation is to expand Berhard Koopman's operator theoretic global linearization approach to the study of nonautonomous flows. Given a system with states x in a set \Omega (the state space), a map t\to \gamma(t,s,x) (t\geq s \geq 0) is called a global flow if it describes the time evolution of a system with the initial state x \in \Omega at time t \geq s \geq 0. Koopman's approach to the study of flows is to look at the dynamics of the observables of the states instead of studying the dynamics of the states directly. To do …
Statistical Modeling Of Earthquake Damage, Allison Nicole Waters
Statistical Modeling Of Earthquake Damage, Allison Nicole Waters
Honors Program Theses
The purpose of this study was to build a statistical model of the economic damage that arises from earthquakes in order to better predict losses from future earthquakes. Though earthquakes are essentially a random event and cannot be fully anticipated, analyzing historical data and creating a statistical model can provide researchers with a more accurate estimate of future losses. The data set from which this model was built incorporated earthquakes occurring worldwide from 1915-2015 in which the total damage was recorded. The final model was a multiple linear regression model explaining total damage resulting from an earthquake through four independent …
Electrical Efficiency Of A Solar Cell, Johnnie Cairns
Electrical Efficiency Of A Solar Cell, Johnnie Cairns
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
Our goal was to determine the electrical efficiency of a solar cell, specifically a CuInGaSe2 solar cell. Solar cells work by converting energy from the sun in the form of photons to electrical energy in the form of electrons. However, the solar energy converted into electrical energy is limited by a property of solar cells called the quantum efficiency. The quantum efficiency of a solar cell is the fraction of photons hitting the cell that are converted into electrons; quantum efficiency varies as a function of wavelength. Another key component which also varies as a function of wavelength is spectral …
Hydrolysis Of Acetic Anhydride In A Cstr, Veronica N. Coraci
Hydrolysis Of Acetic Anhydride In A Cstr, Veronica N. Coraci
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
To find the optimal reactor volume and temperature for the hydrolysis of acetic anhydride at the lowest possible cost with a 90% conversion of acetic anhydride, a formula for the total cost of the reaction was created. Then, the first derivative was taken to find a value for the temperature. This value was then inputted into the second derivative of the equation to find the sign of the value which would indicate whether that point was a minima or maxima value. The minima value would then be the lowest total cost for the optimum reaction to take place.
Analysis Of Adiabatic Batch Reactor, Erald Gjonaj
Analysis Of Adiabatic Batch Reactor, Erald Gjonaj
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
A mixture of acetic anhydride is reacted with excess water in an adiabatic batch reactor to form an exothermic reaction. The concentration of acetic anhydride and the temperature inside the adiabatic batch reactor are calculated with an initial temperature of 20°C, an initial temperature of 30°C, and with a cooling jacket maintaining the temperature at a constant of 20°C. The graphs of the three different scenarios show that the highest temperatures will cause the reaction to occur faster.
Optimization Of An Agitated Extractor, Evan Zapf
Optimization Of An Agitated Extractor, Evan Zapf
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
In this scenario, we use calculus to determine the optimal operating specifications of a chemical extraction process. The results are achieved by first developing an expression that yields the total annual cost of the process. Factoring in electricity, vessel, agitator, and solvent costs, an annual cost expression was fabricated. AGIEX company manufactures a certain amount of a product, A, which has an impurity that it wishes be reduced. By engineering an optimally sized vessel to perform the extraction of impurity, the company will save costs by ensuring no inefficient spending on power or excess solvent occurs. A specific amount of …
Size And Concentration Analysis Of Gold Nanoparticles With Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy, Sanim Rahman
Size And Concentration Analysis Of Gold Nanoparticles With Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy, Sanim Rahman
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
Spherical gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are synthesized by Turkevich Method and PEL 35 UV-VIS spectrophotometer recorded the wavelength and absorption of the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) peak. The diameter and concentration of solute GNPs are calculated. The concentration of GNPs is done with Beer’s law. The average diameter of GNPs is done via the ratio of SPR peak to the absorbance at 450 nm. The diameters are compared to SEM scan of synthesized GNPs and Sigma-Aldrich values.
Temperature Of The Central Processing Unit, Ivan Lavrov
Temperature Of The Central Processing Unit, Ivan Lavrov
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
Heat is inevitably generated in the semiconductors during operation. Cooling in a computer, and in its main part – the Central Processing Unit (CPU), is crucial, allowing the proper functioning without overheating, malfunctioning, and damage. In order to estimate the temperature as a function of time, it is important to solve the differential equations describing the heat flow and to understand how it depends on the physical properties of the system. This project aims to answer these questions by considering a simplified model of the CPU + heat sink. A similarity with the electrical circuit and certain methods from electrical …
Optimum Gear Ratios For An Electric Vehicle, Scott Parkinson
Optimum Gear Ratios For An Electric Vehicle, Scott Parkinson
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The goal of this project is to determine the optimal gear ratios for a vehicle containing a four-speed transmission. This vehicle is required to reach a speed of 30 m/s in the minimum time possible. Equations for the velocity at each shift point were found. An equation for the total time that the vehicle took to reach 30 m/s was then derived and equations for the times spent in each gear were found through integration of the provided formula for acceleration. The optimal gear ratios were then found by taking the partial derivatives of the total time equation with respect …

We report on new p(e, e' p)π°. measurements at the Δ+(1232) resonance at the low momentum transfer region, where the mesonic cloud dynamics is predicted to be dominant and rapidly changing, offering a test bed for chiral effective field theory calculations. The new data explore the Q2 dependence of the resonant quadrupole amplitudes and for the first time indicate that the Electric and the Coulomb quadrupole amplitudes converge as Q2 -> 0. The measurements of the Coulomb quadrupole amplitude have been extended to the lowest momentum transfer ever reached, and suggest that more than half of …

Precise measurement of neutrino oscillations, and hence the determination of their masses demands a quantitative understanding of neutrino-nucleus interactions. To this aim, two-body meson-exchange currents have to be accounted for along within realistic models of nuclear dynamics. We summarize our progresses towards the construction of a consistent framework, based on quantum Monte Carlo methods and on the spectral function approach, that can be exploited to accurately describe neutrino interactions with atomic nuclei over the broad kinematical region covered by neutrino experiments.

"Hammer" Events, Neutrino Energies, And Nucleon-Nucleon Correlations, L. B. Weinstein, O. Hen, Eli Piasetzky
Physics Faculty Publications
Background: Accelerator-based neutrino oscillation measurements depend on observing a difference between the expected and measured rate of neutrino-nucleus interactions at different neutrino energies or different distances from the neutrino source. Neutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections are complicated and depend on the neutrino beam energy, the neutrino-nucleus interaction, and the structure of the nucleus. Knowledge of the incident neutrino energy spectrum and neutrino-detector interactions are crucial for analyzing neutrino oscillation experiments. The ArgoNeut liquid argon time projection chamber (lArTPC) observed charged-current neutrino-argon scattering events with two protons back-to-back in the final state ("hammer" events) which they associated with short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon-nucleon …

Issues And Opportunities In Exotic Hadrons, R.A. Briceño, T. D. Cohen, S. Coito, J. J. Dudek, E. Eichten, R. E. Mitchell
Physics Faculty Publications
The last few years have been witness to a proliferation of new results concerning heavy exotic hadrons. Experimentally, many new signals have been discovered that could be pointing towards the existence of tetraquarks, pentaquarks, and other exotic configurations of quarks and gluons. Theoretically, advances in lattice field theory techniques place us at the cusp of understanding complex coupled-channel phenomena, modelling grows more sophisticated, and effective field theories are being applied to an ever greater range of situations. It is thus an opportune time to evaluate the status of the field. In the following, a series of high priority experimental and …

Laser Pulsing In Linear Compton Scattering, G. A. Krafft, E. Johnson, K. Deitrick, B. Terzić, R. Kelmar, T. Hodges, J. R. Delayen
Physics Faculty Publications
Previous work on calculating energy spectra from Compton scattering events has either neglected considering the pulsed structure of the incident laser beam, or has calculated these effects in an approximate way subject to criticism. In this paper, this problem has been reconsidered within a linear plane wave model for the incident laser beam. By performing the proper Lorentz transformation of the Klein-Nishina scattering cross section, a spectrum calculation can be created which allows the electron beam energy spread and emittance effects on the spectrum to be accurately calculated, essentially by summing over the emission of each individual electron. Such an …

Rosenbluth Separation Of The Πᵒ Electroproduction Cross Section, M. Defurne, M. Canan, C. E. Hyde, S. Koirala, M.N.H. Rashad, Jefferson Lab Hall A Collaboration
Physics Faculty Publications
We present deeply virtual πᵒ electroproduction cross-section measurements at xB = 0.36 and three different Q2 values ranging from 1.5 to 2 GeV2, obtained from Jefferson Lab Hall A experiment E07-007. The Rosenbluth technique is used to separate the longitudinal and transverse responses. Results demonstrate that the cross section is dominated by its transverse component and, thus, is far from the asymptotic limit predicted by perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Nonetheless, an indication of a nonzero longitudinal contribution is provided by the measured interference term σLT. Results are compared with several models based on the leading-twist approach of …

Single-crystalline, single-phase CaKFe4As4 has been grown out of a high-temperature, quaternary melt. Temperature-dependent measurements of x-ray diffraction, anisotropic electrical resistivity, elastoresistivity, thermoelectric power, Hall effect, magnetization, and specific heat, combined with field-dependent measurements of electrical resistivity and field and pressure-dependent measurements of magnetization indicate that CaKFe4As4 is an ordered, stoichiometric, Fe-based superconductor with a superconducting critical temperature, Tc = 35.0 ± 0.2 K. Other than superconductivity, there is no indication of any other phase transition for 1.8K ≤ T ≤ 300 K. All of these thermodynamic and transport data reveal striking similarities to …

Cluster Algebras And Maximal Green Sequences For Closed Surfaces, Eric Bucher
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Given a marked surface (S,M) we can add arcs to the surface to create a triangulation, T, of that surface. For each triangulation, T, we can associate a cluster algebra. In this paper we will consider orientable surfaces of genus n with two interior marked points and no boundary component. We will construct a specific triangulation of this surface which yields a quiver. Then in the sense of work by Keller we will produce a maximal green sequence for this quiver. Since all finite mutation type cluster algebras can be associated to a surface, with some rare exceptions, this work …
Synthetic Efforts Towards The Synthesis Of Prostaglandin Pgf2a, Amy Marie Pollard
Synthetic Efforts Towards The Synthesis Of Prostaglandin Pgf2a, Amy Marie Pollard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation describes strategies for synthesizing prostaglandin PGF2α. Our synthetic design creates the stereochemistry needed for the core and side chains of the target prostaglandin PGF2 alpha and PGF2 alpha synthase selective analogues while incorporating iodocyclization desymmetrization of acyclic dienes. A model system for 4-(iodomethyl)-6-methyl-1,3-dioxan-2-one was developed and synthesized for our target compound 4-(2-(benzyloxy)ethyl)-6-(iodomethyl)-5-vinyl-1,3-dioxan-2-one. Both compounds were successfully synthesized providing useful stereocenters for completing the synthesis of prostaglandin PGF2 alpha. Efforts toward total stereochemical control of PGF2α include the partial syntheses of bis-diethylanimedimethylsilane and of (4S,5S)-2-((1E,3E)-penta-1,3-dien-1-yl)-4,5-diphenyl-1,3-ditosyl-1,3,2-diazaborolidine.

Arsenic Speciation And Phytoremediation Modeling For Environmental Management, Sidney Joseph Marlborough
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Arsenic has been used throughout recorded history but during the industrial revolution widespread use led to global environmental impact. The two forms that should be considered in environment management are arsenate and arsenite. The calculations of environmental risk for arsenic exposure relies the toxicity of arsenite however, in well aeriated surface soils arsenate may be the predominate form. Ecological risk assessments based on arsenite studies will lead to restrictive remediation requirements that do not adequately reflect the level of risk. Arsenate resembles phosphate and as such has a greater affinity for phytoremediation. Phytoremediation is one of the most viable and …
