Needs Assessment: A Report On Seven Focus Groups In Ohio: Report Summary, Kevin O'Brien, Daniel Baracskay, Wendy Kellogg, Michael Mcgoun, Claudette Robey, Michael Tevesz, Kirstin Toth

Michael J. Tevesz

Coastal decision-makers and training providers in the Ohio Lake Erie basin participated in seven focus groups to generate information on coastal resources knowledge and training needs. Six of the focus groups were comprised of a cross-section of professionals who make decisions affecting watershed areas or Lake Erie coastal areas (non-providers); the seventh was comprised of training providers (providers). Discussions centered on two main areas: core knowledge needs and training needs.

Effects Of Cost Sharing On Seeking Care For Serious And Minor Symptoms. Results Of A Randomized Controlled Trial, Martin Shapiro, John Ware, Cathy Sherbourne

Martin Shapiro

To estimate the effect of cost sharing on seeking care for serious and minor symptoms, we analyzed data for 3539 persons aged 17 to 61 from the Rand Health Insurance Experiment. Participants were randomly assigned to a free-care group or to insurance plans requiring them to pay part of the costs (cost-sharing group). Annual surveys were administered to determine if participants had serious and minor symptoms during the preceding month and whether they saw a physician. Serious symptoms were judged by a panel of physicians to warrant care in most instances; minor symptoms were judged neither to be severe nor …

Seafood is a highly traded food commodity. Farmed and captured crustaceans contribute a significant proportion with annual production exceeding 10 M metric tonnes with first sale value of $40bn. The sector is dominated by farmed tropical marine shrimp, the fastest growing sector of the global aquaculture industry. It is significant in supporting rural livelihoods and alleviating poverty in producing nations within Asia and Latin America while forming an increasing contribution to aquatic food supply in more developed countries. Nations with marine borders often also support important marine fisheries for crustaceans that are regionally traded as live animals and commodity products. …

Heterotic Conformal Field Theory And Gepner’S Construction, Darwin Chang, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Alok Kumar, Jin Wang

Asim Gangopadhyaya

We discuss some general properties of heterotic conformal field theory in which conformal anomalies c are different for the left-moving and right-moving sectors. It is precisely this type of theory that can be applied immediately to the construction of heterotic string theory. We discuss a general way of constructing such a theory using free fermions. The construction is then applied to generalize Gepner's construction of superstring solutions using the tensor products of N=2 superconformal field theories.

Topographic Control Of Asynchronous Glacial Advances: A Case Study From Annapurna, Nepal, B. Pratt-Sitaula, D. W. Burbank, A. M. Heimsath, Neil Humphrey, M. Oskin, J. Putkonen Dec 2015

Topographic Control Of Asynchronous Glacial Advances: A Case Study From Annapurna, Nepal, B. Pratt-Sitaula, D. W. Burbank, A. M. Heimsath, Neil Humphrey, M. Oskin, J. Putkonen

Neil Humphrey

Differences in the timing of glacial advances, which are commonly attributed to climatic changes, can be due to variations in valley topography. Cosmogenic Be-10 dates from 24 glacial moraine boulders in 5 valleys define two age populations, late-glacial and early Holocene. Moraine ages correlate with paleoglacier valley hypsometries. Moraines in valleys with lower maximum altitudes date to the late-glacial, whereas those in valleys with higher maximum altitudes are early Holocene. Two valleys with similar equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs), but contrasting ages, are aspect, such that spatial differences in climate can be excluded. A glacial mass-balance cellular automata model of these two …

The stability of various possible terminations of the CoS2 (1 × 1) surface have been explored and theoretical expectations are found to agree with experiment. With extensive annealing, there is a phase separation at the (100) surface of CoS2. Sulfur segregation to the surface leads to a significant change in the largely sulfur bands due to changes in the hybridized bands, with cobalt. Resonant photoemission spectra indicate clearly that the hybridized cobalt and sulfur bands, characteristic of the CoS2 bulk, lie at higher binding energies than those of segregated sulfur layers. This is discussed in terms of the stability of …

Estimates Of Probable Dementia Prevalence From Population-Based Surveys Compared With Dementia Prevalence Estimates Based On Meta-Analyses, Kaarin J. Anstey, Richard A. Burns, Carole Birrell, David G. Steel, Kim M. Kiely, Mary A. Luszcz Dec 2015

Luszcz

Dr Carole Birrell

Background: National data on dementia prevalence are not always available, yet it may be possible to obtain estimates from large surveys that include dementia screening instruments. In Australia, many of the dementia prevalence estimates are based on European data collected between 15 and 50 years ago. We derived populationbased estimates of probable dementia and possible cognitive impairment in Australian studies using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and compared these to estimates of dementia prevalence from meta-analyses of European studies. Methods: Data sources included a pooled dataset of Australian longitudinal studies (DYNOPTA), and two Australian Bureau of Statistics National Surveys of …

Loki - A Cryptographic Primitive For Authentication And Secrecy Applications, Lawrence Brown, Josef Pieprzyk, Jennifer Seberry

Professor Jennifer Seberry

This paper provides an overview of the LOKI encryption primitive which may be used to encrypt and decrypt a 64-bit block of data using a 64-bit key. It has been developed as a result of work analysing the existing DEA-1, with the aim of designing a new family of encryption primitives [Brow88], [BrSe89], [BrSe90], [PiFi88], [Piep89b], [Piep89a], [PiSe89]. Its overall structure has a broad resemblence to DEA-1 (see Fig. 1), however the detailed structure has been designed to remove operations which impede analysis or hinder efficient implementation, but which do not add to the cryptographic security of the algorithm. The …

Spatialized Teleconferencing: Recording And 'Squeezed' Rendering Of Multiple Distributed Sites, Eva Cheng, Bin Cheng, Christian H. Ritz, I. Burnett

Dr Christian Ritz

Teleconferencing systems are becoming increasing realistic and pleasant for users to interact with geographically distant meeting participants. Video screens display a complete view of the remote participants, using technology such as wraparound or multiple video screens. However, the corresponding audio does not offer the same sophistication: often only a mono or stereo track is presented. This paper proposes a teleconferencing audio recording and playback paradigm that captures the spatial location of the geographically distributed participants for rendering of the remote soundfields at the users' end. Utilizing standard 5.1 surround sound playback, this paper proposes a surround rendering approach that `squeezes' …

Study Of Potential Risk Of Dengue Disease Outbreak In Sri Lanka Using Gis And Statistical Modelling, Sumith Pathirana, Masato Kawabata, Rohitha Goonatilake

Adjunct Associate Professor Sumith Pathirana

The increasing incidence of dengue fever has become a priority health issue for Sri Lanka. Recent dengue outbreaks in Sri Lanka show two trends: yearly increase of total number of dengue incidence and increasing dengue outbreaks outside the endemic urbanised areas in the south and the west. Identification of factors responsible for dengue outbreaks and the mapping of potential risk areas in Sri Lanka are long overdue. This study examines the association between weekly rainfall patterns and dengue outbreaks in the western province between 2000 and 2004. Methods: The study develops a model to quantitatively assess the relationship between rainfall …

Robust Distributed Scheduling Via Time Period Aggregation, Shih-Fen Cheng, John Tajan, Hoong Chuin Lau

Shih-Fen Cheng

In this paper, we evaluate whether the robustness of a market mechanism that allocates complementary resources could be improved through the aggregation of time periods in which resources are consumed. In particular, we study a multi-round combinatorial auction that is built on a general equilibrium framework. We adopt the general equilibrium framework and the particular combinatorial auction design from the literature, and we investigate the benefits and the limitation of time-period aggregation when demand-side uncertainties are introduced. By using simulation experiments on a real-life resource allocation problem from a container port, we show that, under stochastic conditions, the performance variation …

Propagation Of Tsunami-Driven Gravity Waves Into The Thermosphere And Ionosphere, Michael P. Hickey, G. Schubert, R. L. Walterscheid

Michael P. Hickey

Recent observations have revealed large F-region electron density perturbations (~100%) and total electron content (TEC) perturbations (~30%) that appear to be correlated with tsunamis. The characteristic speed and horizontal wavelength of the disturbances are ~200 m/s and ~400 km. We describe numerical simulations using our spectral full-wave model (SFWM) of the upward propagation of a spectrum of gravity waves forced by a tsunami, and the interaction of these waves with the F-region ionosphere. The SFWM describes the propagation of linear, steady-state acoustic-gravity waves in a nonisothermal atmosphere with the inclusion of eddy and molecular diffusion of heat and momentum, ion …

Can The Financialised Atmosphere Be Effectively Regulated And Accounted For?, Patty Mcnicholas, Carolyn Windsor

Carolyn Windsor

Purpose – This paper aims to carry out a critical analysis of the proposed Australian emissions trading scheme (ETS) as a complex market solution to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs). Specifically it seeks to examine the financial regulatory infrastructure that will more than likely oversee the Australian ETS, the same regulatory infrastructure which failed to prevent the global financial crisis.Design/methodology/approach – A critical examination of the financialisation of the atmosphere that follows the growth of the financialisation of capitalism when economic activity shifted from production and service sectors to finance. Financialisation of capitalism is supported by capitalist regulation influenced by neo-liberal …

Despite the absence of large-scale glaciation, the Australian continent has experienced substantial environmental change throughout the Quaternary period. This is especially pronounced in central Australia, where one seventh of the continent is drained internally to the depocentre, and lowest point in Australia, Lake Eyre (Figure 1). Research has shown that at one time, large sandy braided and meandering rivers carried water through dunefields to a large freshwater lake system. Today, the rivers are hostage to the dunefield, and floodwaters might only reach Lake Eyre once every ten years or so. In order to understand the development of this arid desert …

The Effect Of Frictional And Adhesion Forces Attributed To Slurry Particles On The Surface Quality Of Polished Copper, Yi-Koan Hong, Ja-Hyung Han, Tae-Gon Kim, Jin-Goo Park, Ahmed A. Busnaina

Ahmed A. Busnaina

The effect of frictional and adhesion forces attributed to slurry particles on the quality of copper surfaces was experimentally investigated during copper chemical mechanical planarization process. The highest frictional force of 9 Kgf and adhesion force of 5.83 nN were observed in a deionized water-based alumina slurry. On the other hand, the smallest frictional force of 4 Kgf and adhesion force of 0.38 nN were measured in an alumina slurry containing citric acid. However, frictional (6 Kgf) and adhesion (1 nN) forces of silica particles in the slurry were not significantly changed regardless of the addition of citric acid. These …

Low Bit Rate Wideband Wi Speech Coding, C. H. Ritz, I. Burnett, Jason Lukasiak Dec 2015

Low Bit Rate Wideband Wi Speech Coding, C. H. Ritz, I. Burnett, Jason Lukasiak

Dr. Jason Lukasiak

This paper investigates waveform interpolation (WI) applied low bit rate wideband speech coding. An analysis of the evolutionary behaviour of wideband characteristic waveforms (CWs) shows that direct application of the classical WI algorithm may not be appropriate for wideband speech. We propose a modification whereby CW quantisation is performed using classical WI decomposition for the low frequency region and noise modelling for the high frequency region. Wideband WI coders incorporating this modification and operating at 4 kbps and 6 kbps are described. Subjective testing of these coders shows that WI is a promising approach to low bit rate wideband speech …
