This study develops and tests novel methodologies for measuring the attributes of individual trees from three-dimensional point clouds generated from an aerial platform. Recently, advancements in technology have allowed for the acquisition of very high resolution three-dimensional point clouds that can be used to map the forest in a virtual environment. These point clouds can be interpreted to produce valuable forest attributes across entire landscapes with minimal field labor, which can then aid forest managers in their planning and decision making.

The goal of this talk is to present a student research project in computational population biology, which aims at creating a computer simulation and animation of the spatial dynamics of interactions between two kinds of species living on a torus-shaped universe. The habitat for spatial interactions is modeled by a 2D lattice with periodic boundary conditions, which wrap the rectangular grid into a torus. The adsorption of the proteins CD13, mucin and bovine serum albumin on VLGXE-Au and YNGRT-Au interfaces was monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in the presence of [Fe(CN)6]3−/4−. The hydrophobicity of the Au surface was tailored using specific peptides, blocking agents and diluents. The combination of blocking agents (ethanolamine or n-butylamine) and diluents (hexanethiol or 2-mercaptoethanol) was used to prepare various peptide-modified Au surfaces. Protein adsorption onto the peptide-Au surfaces modified with the combination of n-butylamine and hexanethiol produced a dramatic decrease in the charge transfer resistance, Rct, for all three proteins. Humulones and lupulones have affirmed themselves as key ingredients in the multi-billion dollar brewing industry. Originally exploited for their bacteriostatic properties, these compounds also exhibit high levels of biological activity against a variety of diseases. Although quantifiable, the isolation and separation of specific humulones and lupulones has proven difficult, thus establishing efficient synthetic routes will be of value to those desiring exact bittering qualities and to the pharmaceutical community. Introduction: Recent cohort studies use exposure prediction models to estimate the association between long-term residential concentrations of PM2.5 and health. Because these prediction models rely on PM2.5 monitoring data, predictions for times before extensive spatial monitoring present a challenge to understanding long-term exposure effects. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Federal Reference Method (FRM) network for PM2.5 was established in 1999. We evaluated a novel statistical approach to produce high quality exposure predictions from 1980-2010 for epidemiological applications.

The higher energy needs for today's technological society requires sustainable and renewable energy source, such as solar energy. This study focuses on using semiconducting quantum dots and fluorescent dyes as light absorbers for solar energy conversion devices such as solar cells. Quantum dots are small nanocrystals (usually 2-10 nm in diameter) with tunable absorbing properties. The smaller the dot, the shorter the wavelength being absorbed. Plasma facing components (PFCs) in fusion devices must be able to withstand high temperatures and erosion due to incident energetic ion radiations. Tungsten has become the material of choice for PFCs due to its high strength, thermal conductivity, and low erosion rate. However, its surface deteriorates significantly under helium ion irradiation in fusion-like conditions and forms nanoscopic fiber-like structures, or fuzz. Fuzz is brittle in nature and has relatively lower thermal conductivity than that of the bulk material. Oil recovery is an industrial process that injects aqueous solutions into an oil reservoir to pump out crude oil and promote the oil production. The aqueous solution contains surfactants for reducing the interfacial tension (IFT) between aqueous phase and oil. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) is the concentration of surfactant above which micelles form and the interfacial tension reaches a plateau. In this paper, we propose a natural-language-processing (NLP) pipeline towards classification and visualization of crime-related tweets. The work is divided into two parts. First, we collect crime-related tweets by classification. Unlike written text, social media like Twitter includes substantial non-standard tokens or semantics. Polymer-based thermoelectric devices have the potential to utilize this waste heat both sustainably and cost-effectively. Although conjugated polymers currently dominate research in organic thermoelectrics, the potential of using polymers with radical pendant groups have yet to be realized. This practice likely impacts baseflow generation in the Wabash River of Indiana. If true, then how is baseflow affected in small tributaries to the Wabash? In the initial Visiting Faculty Program application, we proposed the use of an ultraviolet-visible spectrometer equipped with a liquid waveguide capillary flow cell to determine the extent to which SOA absorb visible light. m-toluic acid (MTA) is widely used in manufacturing of dyes, pharmaceuticals, polymer stabilizers, and insect repellents. The aim of present study was to evaluate the impact of biofield treatment on physical, thermal and spectroscopic properties of MTA. MTA sample was divided into two groups that served as treated and control. The treated group received Mr. Trivedi’s biofield treatment. This paper reports the environmentally benign, simple, cost efficient, one-step, surfactant free, and biogenic synthesis of silver-graphene (Ag-Graphene) nanocomposite using an electrochemically active biofilm (EAB). The EAB was used for the reduction of Ag+ to Ag0 onto the graphene sheets. The morphology, structure, composition, and optical properties and contact angle of the Ag-Graphene were obtained using a range of techniques which confirmed the anchoring/presence of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto the graphene sheets. The aim of the present study is to detect the chaotic behavior in the monetary economic relevant dynamical system. The study employs three different forms of Taylor rules: current, forward and backward looking. The result suggests the existence of the chaotic behavior in all three systems. In addition, the results strongly represent that using expectations in policy rule especially rational expectation hypothesis can increase the complexity of the system and leads to more chaotic behavior.

The self-assembly of diblock copolymers into ordered domains holds great potential to furthering the efficiency of photovoltaic devices. Solutions containing polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were applied to silicon wafers from toluene solutions. Hexagonally ordered domains, with pore sizes ranging from 10-30 nm, were obtained by annealing films in solvent vapor, with the best results produced from a humidified benzene environment. Exposing the films to UV light cross-linked the polystyrene matrix and degraded the PMMA. We consider topological conditions under which a locally invertible map admits a global inverse. Our main theorem states that a local diffeomorphism f : M → Rn is bijective if and only if Hn−1(M) = 0 and the pre-image of every affine hyperplane is non-empty and acyclic. The proof is based on some geometric constructions involving foliations and tools from intersection theory. This topological result generalizes in finite dimensions the classical analytic theorem of Hadamard-Plastock, including its recent improvement by Nollet-Xavier.
