A Study Of The Parametric And Nonparametric Linear-Circular Correlation Coefficient, Robin Tu Jun 2015

A Study Of The Parametric And Nonparametric Linear-Circular Correlation Coefficient, Robin Tu

Statistics

Circular statistics are specialized statistical methods that deal specifically with directional data. Data that is angular require specialized techniques due to the modulo 2π (in radians) or modulo 360 (in degrees) nature of angles.

Correlation, typically in terms of Pearson’s correlation coefficient, is a measure of association between two linear random variables x and y. In this paper, the specific circular technique of the parametric and nonparametric linear-circular correlation coefficient will be explored where correlation is no longer between two linear variables x and y, but between a linear random variable x and circular random variable θ.

A simulation …

#Twittercritic: Sentiment Analysis Of Tweets To Predict Tv Ratings, Isabel Litton

Statistics

Twitter has rapidly become one of the most popular sites of the Internet. It functions not just as a microblogging service, but as a crowdsourcing tool for listening, promotion, insight and much more. From the perspective of TV networks, tweets capture the real time reactions of viewers, making them an ideal indicator of a show’s ratings. This paper predicts Internet Movie Database (IMDB) television ratings by text mining Twitter data.

Tweets for five television shows were downloaded over a period of several months utilizing a SAS macro. Television show data, such as rating, show title, episode title, and more were …

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

Researchers, university administrators, and faculty members are increasingly interested in measuring and describing instructional practices provided in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses at the college level. Specifically, there is keen interest in comparing instructional practices between courses, monitoring changes over time, and mapping observed practices to research-based teaching. While increasingly common observation protocols (Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol [RTOP] and Classroom Observation Protocol in Undergraduate STEM [COPUS]) at the postsecondary level help achieve some of these goals, they also suffer from weaknesses that limit their applicability. In this study, we leverage the strengths of these protocols to provide an …

Landscape-Level Analysis Of Mountain Goat Population Connectivity In Washington And Southern British Columbia, David O. Wallin, Leslie C. (Leslie Claire) Parks, Samuel A. Cushman, Brad H. Mcrae Jun 2015

Landscape-Level Analysis Of Mountain Goat Population Connectivity In Washington And Southern British Columbia, David O. Wallin, Leslie C. (Leslie Claire) Parks, Samuel A. Cushman, Brad H. Mcrae

Environmental Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Habitat fragmentation and habitat loss diminish population connectivity, reducing genetic diversity and increasing extinction risk over time. Improving connectivity is widely recommended to preserve the long-term viability of populations, but this requires accurate knowledge of how landscapes influence connectivity. Detectability of landscape effects on gene flow is highly dependent on landscape context, and drawing conclusions from single landscape studies may lead to ineffective management strategies. We present a novel approach to elucidate regional variation in the relative importance of landscape variable effects on gene flow. We demonstrate this approach by evaluating gene flow between isolated, genetically impoverished mountain goat ( …

Performance Analysis Of A Distributed Key System Broken Up Over Multiple Nodes Across The Amazon Web Service (Aws) Cloud, Erich P. Rice Jun 2015

Performance Analysis Of A Distributed Key System Broken Up Over Multiple Nodes Across The Amazon Web Service (Aws) Cloud, Erich P. Rice

Culminating Projects in Information Assurance

The advent of cloud computing has decreased the cost of enterprise level system design and implementation, while at the same time increasing the need for a sound and secure strategy for security. The use of encryption algorithms continues to be the main line of defense in performing secure data transmissions, the use of a Cloud Computing environment offers both advantages and disadvantages in the encryption process.

Though the new series of encryption algorithms are quite robust, they require a “key” to make their use unique for an individual session, thus if the key is compromised then the underlying encryption algorithm …

Developing A Parametric Downconversion Apparatus For Single-Photon Experiments In Quantum Optics, Stephen Dilorio Jun 2015

Developing A Parametric Downconversion Apparatus For Single-Photon Experiments In Quantum Optics, Stephen Dilorio

Honors Theses

We report our progress toward developing a parametric down conversion apparatus for studying single photon quantum optics in undergraduate laboratory classes, following the model of Galvez et al. [1]. We pump a beta barium borate (BBO) crystal with a 405 nm diode laser to produce correlated pairs of single photons that we detect using avalanche photodiodes (APD). We can conduct coincidence and anticoincidence counts and a measurement of the degree of second-order coherence with the apparatus, and we report a g(2) < 1. We also discuss the headway towards developing a single-photon interferometer.

Old Roots And New Shoots: How Locals And Back-To-The-Landers Remade Maine's Local Food Economy, Eileen Hagerman Jun 2015

Old Roots And New Shoots: How Locals And Back-To-The-Landers Remade Maine's Local Food Economy, Eileen Hagerman

Maine History

Back-to-the-landers who relocated to Maine in large numbers during the 1970s often lacked traditional rural skills and encountered a variety of agricultural challenges related to the state’s harsh climate and poor soils. Many who remained on the land often did so, at least initially, because they received support from elderly neighbors who still practiced low-input, small-scale farming. These neighbors tended to freely share their knowledge and skills and, in return, often benefited from the young newcomers’ assistance with laborious on-farm tasks. The newcomers worked with their local allies to form organizations, share knowledge, and coordinate marketing efforts tailored to meet …

Decay Estimates For The Wave Equation In Two Dimensions, Marius Beceanu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship

We establish Strichartz estimates (both reversed and some direct ones), pointwise decay estimates, and weighted decay estimates for the linear wave equation in dimension two with an almost scaling-critical potential, in the case when there is no resonance or eigenvalue at the edge of the spectrum. We also prove some simple nonlinear applications.

Multiplayer Browser-Based Game Utilizing Javascript And Webgl Frameworks, Cy Tan, Benjamin Naftali, Matthew Tong, Vincent Chan

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The goal of our project is to make an online large-scale multiplayer game with persistent user data. This will involve real-time player interaction and many customization options. This game will be a massively-multiplayer online tactics role-playing game (MMOTRPG), a genre that has been insufficiently explored. This area of browser-based massive multiplayer games is also a platform of gaming that has yet to realize the capabilities of modern browsers and the level of interaction and graphics they now support.

The scope of our project does not encompass the complete feature set we have intended for the game, but rather a technical …

The Strain Seismograms Of P- And S-Waves Of A Local Event Recorded By Four-Gauge Borehole Strainmeter, Zehua Qui, Shunliang Chi, Zhenming Wang, Seth Carpenter, Lei Tang, Yanping Guo, Guang Yang

Faculty, Staff, and Affiliated Publications--KGS

At a sampling rate of 100 samples per second, the YRY-4 four-gauge borehole strainmeters (FGBS) are capable of recording transient strains caused by seismic waves such as P and S waves or strain seismograms. At such a high sampling rate, data from the YRY-4 strainmeters demonstrate fairly satisfactory self-consistency. The strain tensor seismograms demonstrate the senses of motion of P waves, that is, the type of seismic wave travels in the direction of the maximum normal strain change. The observed strain patterns of S waves significantly differ from those of P waves and should contain information about the source mechanism. …

Kinetic Modeling Of Catalytic Aerogels, Yi Cao Jun 2015

Kinetic Modeling Of Catalytic Aerogels, Yi Cao

Honors Theses

As pollution becomes an increasing concern globally, strict regulations have been set on vehicle pollutant emissions. The three-way catalytic converter is capable of converting toxic emissions such as carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides to less hazardous waste such as carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen. Current catalysts employ platinum group metals, which are expensive and environmentally damaging to mine. Catalytically-active aerogels such as Co-Al, Cu-Al and V-Al aerogels have shown promise as alternatives to these metals. The work presented here adapts and extends a global kinetic model which predicts the conversion of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide on platinum catalyst …

What It Is To Be Conscious: Exploring The Plasibility Of Consciousness In Deep Learning Computers, Peter Davis Jun 2015

What It Is To Be Conscious: Exploring The Plasibility Of Consciousness In Deep Learning Computers, Peter Davis

Honors Theses

As artificial intelligence and robotics progress further and faster every day, designing and building a conscious computer appears to be on the horizon. Recent technological advances have allowed engineers and computer scientists to create robots and computer programs that were previously impossible. The development of these highly sophisticated robots and AI programs has thus prompted the age-old question: can a computer be conscious? The answer relies on addressing two key sub-problems. The first is the nature of consciousness: what constitutes a system as conscious, or what properties does consciousness have? Secondly, does the physical make-up of the robot or computer …

Classifying System Call Traces Using Anomalous Detection, William Doyle Jun 2015

Classifying System Call Traces Using Anomalous Detection, William Doyle

Honors Theses

We used data mining techniques to detect intrusions among system call traces and have outlined our results. Recent work at the intersection of security and machine learning has lead to better understanding of anomalous intrusion detection. There is a need to more thoroughly understand how anomaly detection can be used because of its potential applications and advantages over current standard methods. In this thesis, we report on a new approach of anomalous detection using system call traces. Our goal is to be able to create a system that can accurately detect hacking attacks by analyzing the sequences of system calls …

Axial Vibrations Of Brass Wind Instrument Bells And Their Acoustical Influence: Theory And Simulations, Wilfried Kausel, Vasileios Chatziioannou, Thomas R. Moore, Britta R. Gorman, Michelle Rokni Jun 2015

Axial Vibrations Of Brass Wind Instrument Bells And Their Acoustical Influence: Theory And Simulations, Wilfried Kausel, Vasileios Chatziioannou, Thomas R. Moore, Britta R. Gorman, Michelle Rokni

Student-Faculty Collaborative Research Publications

Previous work has demonstrated that structural vibrations of brass wind instruments can audibly affect the radiated sound. Furthermore, these broadband effects are not explainable by assuming perfect coincidence of the frequency of elliptical structural modes with air column resonances. In this work a mechanism is proposed that has the potential to explain the broadband influences of structural vibrations on acoustical characteristics such as input impedance, transfer function, and radiated sound. The proposed mechanism involves the coupling of axial bell vibrations to the internal air column. The acoustical effects of such axial bell vibrations have been studied by extending an existing …

Kink, Singular Soliton And Periodic Solutions To Class Of Nonlinear Equations, Marwan Alquran, Safwan Al-Shara, Sabreen Al-Nimrat

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we extend the ordinary differential Duffing equation into a partial differential equation. We study the traveling wave solutions to this model by using the G'/G expansion method. Then, based on the obtained results given for the Duffing equation, we generate kink, singular soliton and periodic solutions for a coupled integrable dispersionless nonlinear system. All the solutions given in this work are verified.

A Stage-Structured Two Species Competition Mathematical Model Under The Effect Of Disease, Manju Agarwal, Vinay Verma Jun 2015

A Stage-Structured Two Species Competition Mathematical Model Under The Effect Of Disease, Manju Agarwal, Vinay Verma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper we study the dynamics of two competing species model; one of this competing species is stage structured and the disease spreads only in the other competing specie. In order to keep the model simple, we present it under the strong assumption that the disease can not cross the species barrier. Dynamical behaviors such as positivity, boundedness, stability, bifurcation and persistence of the model are studied analytically using the theory of differential equations. Computer simulations are carried out to substantiate the analytical findings. It is noted that c the loss rate of the population, T the maturation time …

Characterization Of Gamma Hemirings By Generalized Fuzzy Gamma Ideals, Muhammad Gulistan, Muhammad Shahzad, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mehwish Ilyas Jun 2015

Characterization Of Gamma Hemirings By Generalized Fuzzy Gamma Ideals, Muhammad Gulistan, Muhammad Shahzad, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mehwish Ilyas

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper has explored theoretical methods of evaluation in the identification of the boundedness of the generalized fuzzy gamma ideals. A functional approach was used to undertake a characterization of this structure leading to a determination of some interesting gamma hemirings theoretic properties of the generated structures. Gamma hemirings are the generalization of the classical agebraic structure of hemirings. Our aim is to extend this idea and, to introduce the concept of generalized fuzzy gamma ideals, generalized fuzzy prime (semiprime) gamma ideals, generalized fuzzy h -gamma ideals and generalized fuzzy k - gamma ideals of gamma hemirings and related properties …
