When face-to-face physical medical exams are not possible, virtual physical exams, in the form of a pictorial medical exam/history, can be substituted, and telemedicine can be the means to deliver these virtual exams. The goal of this work was to determine if presence in the form of a visual and/or pictorial medical history can be of benefit to clinicians in the diagnosis of medical conditions of individuals with developmental disabilities (DDs) and/or intellectual disabilities (IDs), in particular those who cannot, because of their cognitive and/or physical disabilities, verbally relate their illness to a clinician. Software design continues to evolve from the structured programming paradigm of the 1970s and 1980s and the object-oriented programming (OOP) paradigm of the 1980s and 1990s. The functional decomposition design methodology used in these paradigms reduced the prominence of non-functional requirements, which resulted in scattered and tangled code to address non-functional elements. Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) allowed the removal of crosscutting concerns scattered throughout class code into single modules known as aspects. A detailed derivation of stratocumulus cloud thickness and liquid water path tendencies as a function of the well-mixed boundary layer mass, heat, and moisture budget equations is presented. The derivation corrects an error in the cloud thickness tendency equation derived by R. Wood to make it consistent with the liquid water path tendency equation derived by J. J. van der Dussen et al. The validity of the tendency equations is then tested against the output of large-eddy simulations of a typical stratocumulus-topped boundary layer case and is found to be in good agreement.

Water quality was monitored at 21 sites in the Lower Ouachita‐Smackover Watershed from 2013 November through 2014 September. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains discharge monitoring stations at two of these sites, Moro Creek (USGS 07362500) and Smackover Creek (USGS 07362100), which were sampled during base flow and storm event conditions, whereas the other sites were only sampled during baseflow. The Arkansas Water Resources Center (AWRC) estimated constituent loads for nitrate‐N (NO₃‐–N), total nitrogen (TN), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total phosphorus (TP) and total suspended solids (TSS) using the U.S. Geological Survey LOADEST software. For aesthetic, economic, and health-related reasons, allowable concentrations of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) found present in drinking water are 0.3 mg/L and 0.05 mg/L, respectively. Water samples taken from private drinking wells in the rural communities within Buncombe County, North Carolina contain amounts of these metals in concentrations higher than the suggested limits. This study focused on bedrock geology, elevation, saprolite thickness, and well depth to determine factors affecting Fe and Mn. Using ArcGIS 10.2, spatial trends in Fe and Mn concentrations ranges were visualized, and estimates of the metal concentrations were interpolated to unmonitored areas. Results from this …

β-glucan is a major component of the fungal cell wall consisting of (1→3)-β linked glucose polymers with (1→6)-β linked side chains. The published classical isolation procedure of β-glucan from Saccharomyces cerevisiae is expensive and time-consuming. Thus, the aim of this research was to develop an effective procedure for the extraction of glucans. We have developed a new method for glucan extraction that will be cost effective and will maintain the native structure of the glucan. An image processing algorithm has been developed to analyze data from a NIR All-Sky Imager of OH airglow emission (from about 87 km altitude), located in the Andes, with the purpose of investigating the atmospheric gravity waves generated when low level wind blows over the high mountains (referred to as Mountain Waves). These types of waves are a special case of atmospheric gravity waves, which carry significant momentum and exert strong forcing to the background upper atmosphere. Diabetes is a metabolic disease that can lead to the non-enzymatic glycation of serum proteins such as human serum albumin (HSA). Previous studies have indicated that glycation can affect the structure and function of these proteins. This dissertation describes the development of tools and techniques based on high performance affinity chromatography (HPAC) and multidimensional mass spectrometry to analyze the effects of glycation on the function and structure of HSA.

This dissertation describes the use of a high-performance affinity chromatography method based on ultrafast affinity extraction and microcolumns to study biological interactions.

In the first project, a new method was created and based on ultrafast affinity extraction to determine both the dissociation rate constants (kd) and association equilibrium constants (Ka) for drug-protein interactions in solution. Various conditions to optimize the use of ultrafast affinity extraction for equilibrium and kinetic studies were considered.

Bioactive natural products are a major source of anti-infectives. Many ubiquitous inhabitants of soil and water, such as the Gram-negative, prolific producers of natural products, Lysobacter, remain largely unexplored. This PhD thesis reports our studies of the biosynthetic mechanism for a novel antifungal natural product HSAF and a potent anti-MRSA natural product WAP-8294A2.

In the first chapter, we give a short review of the biosynthesis of polyketides, focusing on those which exhibit new biosynthetic features. A sedimentological, stratigraphical and palynological study was conducted on the upper Cretaceous (Campanian) Mesaverde Group over 27.5 km of a north-south-orientated outcrop belt in the northern Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. During the Campanian, the study area lay in the western part of the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway. The study aims to provide a stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental analysis of the Mesaverde Group and to integrate findings with data from outcrop belts to the south (southern Bighorn Basin), north (Montana) and east (Powder River Basin).

Low Molecular Weight Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (LMW-PTP) isoform 2 (IF2) has been found to be over expressed in many forms of aggressive cancer and has become a target for inhibition. Competitive inhibition of LMW-PTP IF2 by known inhibitor pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP) shows a strong inhibition constant (Ki = 7.6 μM at pH 5.0); however, PLP is a cofactor for many other enzymes. In silico screening and in vitro testing identified NSC107022 (Ki = 10.8 ±1.0) from the National Cancer Institute's Diversity Set II as a lead compound for optimization as a LMW-PTP IF2 inhibitor. The visible and infrared spectroelectrochemistry of zinc and manganese porphinones and porphinediones was carried out in THF solutions. The aim of this work was to use FTIR spectroelectrochemistry and DFT calculation to determine whether the reduction was centered predominantly on the metal or the macrocycle. For zinc(II), the first one-electron reduction must occur on the macrocyclic ring because the metal’s d-orbitals are filled (d10). The carbonyl bands on the macrocyclic ring were used to probe the electronic structure because they can be readily observed in the infrared spectra. In this work, we investigate the problem of mobile crowdsourcing, where workers are financially motivated to perform location-based tasks physically. Unlike current industry practice that relies on workers to manually browse and filter tasks to perform, we intend to automatically make task recommendations based on workers' historical trajectories and desired time budgets. The goal of algorithm portfolios is to construct a subset of algorithms with diverse problem solving capabilities. Links between issue reports and their corresponding commits in version control systems are often missing. However, these links are important for measuring the quality of a software system, predicting defects, and many other tasks. Several approaches have been designed to solve this problem by automatically linking bug reports to source code commits via comparison of textual information in commit messages and bug reports. Mobile games, and especially multiplayer games are a very popular daily distraction for many users. We hypothesise that commuters travelling on public buses or trains would enjoy being able to play multiplayer games with their fellow commuters to alleviate the commute burden and boredom. We present quantitative data to show that the typical one-way commute time is fairly long (at least 25 minutes on average) as well as survey results indicating that commuters are willing to play multiplayer games with other random commuters. In thispaper, we introduce Fluency CAPTCHA (FluTCHA), anovel method to distinguish humans from computersusing the fact that humans are better than machines atimproving the fluency of sentences. Electronically photoexcited dynamics are complicated because there are so many different relaxation pathways: fluorescence, phosphorescence, radiationless decay, electon transfer, etc. In practice, to model photoexcited systems is a very difficult enterprise, requiring accurate and very efficient tools in both electronic structure theory and nonadiabatic chemical dynamics. Moreover, these theoretical tools are not traditional tools. On the one hand, the electronic structure tools involve couplings between electonic states (rather than typical single state energies and gradients). On the other hand, the dynamics tools involve propagating nuclei on multiple potential energy surfaces (rather than the usual ground state dynamics).

Cleaning oil spills is a universal concern due to its environmental impact. The aim of this study is to study the effectiveness and applications of pure and recycled polymers in clean-up and the recovery of crude oil from oil spills. In this study, micro-nanofibres of analytical-grade and commercial polystyrene samples were prepared by electrospinning technique. Fiber size distribution was shown to vary with the electrospinning parameters and type of polymer. Fibrous sorbents prepared hereafter were investigated for their efficiency in removing oil spill. We present the design, description, calibration procedure, and an analysis of systematic effects for an apparatus designed to measure the rotation of the plane of polarization of a transversely polarized slow neutron beam as it passes through unpolarized matter. This device is the neutronoptical equivalent of a crossed polarizer/analyzer pair familiar from light optics. This apparatus has been used to search for parity violation in the interaction of polarized slow neutrons in matter. Given the brightness of existing slow neutron sources, this apparatus is capable ofmeasuring a neutron rotary power of dϕ/dz = 1 × 10−7 rad/m.
