Directed Search For Gravitational Waves From Scorpius X-1 With Initial Ligo Data, J. Aasi, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present results of a search for continuously emitted gravitational radiation, directed at the brightest low-mass x-ray binary, Scorpius X-1. Our semicoherent analysis covers 10 days of LIGO S5 data ranging from 50-550 Hz, and performs an incoherent sum of coherent F-statistic power distributed amongst frequency-modulated orbital sidebands. All candidates not removed at the veto stage were found to be consistent with noise at a 1% false alarm rate. We present Bayesian 95% confidence upper limits on gravitational-wave strain amplitude using two different prior distributions: a standard one, with no a priori assumptions about the orientation of Scorpius X-1; …

Simulation Of Uv Radiation Degradation Of Polymers On Misse-6 In The Low Earth Orbit Environment, Kelby T. Peterson, Jr Dennison

Senior Theses and Projects

Materials International Space Station Experiment 6 (MISSE-6) was an experiment designed to examine the consequences of the space environment on various materials used in space-component design. USU’s contribution was comprised of approximately 180 samples that were suspended from the side of the International Space Station (ISS) for 18 months and returned to allow for pre- and post-flight comparisons. The sample with the most evident changes was a thin film of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) MylarTM coated with Vapor Deposited Aluminum (VDA). The post-flight analysis showed evidence of atomic oxygen erosion of the VDA layer, UV-induced discoloration of the polymer, and …

Geometrization Conditions For Perfect Fluids, Scalar Fields, And Electromagnetic Fields, Charles G. Torre, Dionisios Krongos Mar 2015

Geometrization Conditions For Perfect Fluids, Scalar Fields, And Electromagnetic Fields, Charles G. Torre, Dionisios Krongos

Presentations and Publications

Rainich-type conditions giving a spacetime “geometrization” of matter fields in general relativity are reviewed and extended. Three types of matter are considered: perfect fluids, scalar fields, and elec- tromagnetic fields. Necessary and sufficient conditions on a spacetime metric for it to be part of a perfect fluid solution of the Einstein equa- tions are given. Formulas for constructing the fluid from the metric are obtained. All fluid results hold for any spacetime dimension. Ge- ometric conditions on a metric which are necessary and sufficient for it to define a solution of the Einstein-scalar field equations and for- mulas for constructing …

Influence Of Microgel Packing On Raspberry-Like Heteroaggregate Assembly, Shalini Saxena, L. Andrew Lyon Mar 2015

Influence Of Microgel Packing On Raspberry-Like Heteroaggregate Assembly, Shalini Saxena, L. Andrew Lyon

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

We describe the influence of microgel packing on colloidal-phase mediated heteroaggregation using poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) microgels with 1% mol or 5% mol N,N’-methylenebis(acrylamide) cross-linker. This system is uniquely designed to interrogate the influence of microgel structure and stiffness on microgel deformation at a curved interface by elminating the necessity of electrostatic charge pairing. Microgel monomer and cross-linker content is expected to influence deformation at a curved interface. Microgel deformation and swelling were characterized via atomic force microscopy (AFM) and viscometry. A systematic study of colloidal-phase heteroaggregation was performed at varied effective volume fractions with all …

Existence Of Solutions For A Variable Exponent System Without Ps Conditions, Li Yin, Yuan Liang, Qihu Zhang, Chunshan Zhao

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this article, we study the existence of solution for the following elliptic system of variable exponents with perturbation terms − div |∇u| p(x)−2∇u) + |u| p(x)−2u = λa(x)|u| γ(x)−2u + Fu(x, u, v) in R N , − div |∇v| q(x)−2∇v) + |v| q(x)−2 v = λb(x)|v| δ(x)−2 v + Fv(x, u, v) in R N , u ∈ W1,p(·) (R N ), v ∈ W1,q(·) (R N ), where the corresponding functional does not satisfy PS conditions. We obtain a sufficient condition for the existence of solution and also present a result on asymptotic behavior of solutions at …

Addressing The Zeros Problem: Regression Models For Outcomes With A Large Proportion Of Zeros, With An Application To Trial Outcomes, Theodore Eisenberg, Thomas Eisenberg, Martin T. Wells, Min Zhang

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In law‐related and other social science contexts, researchers need to account for data with an excess number of zeros. In addition, dollar damages in legal cases also often are skewed. This article reviews various strategies for dealing with this data type. Tobit models are often applied to deal with the excess number of zeros, but these are more appropriate in cases of true censoring (e.g., when all negative values are recorded as zeros) and less appropriate when zeros are in fact often observed as the amount awarded. Heckman selection models are another methodology that is applied in this setting, yet …

How Geophysicists' Intuition Helps Seismic Data Processing, Afshin Gholamy, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2015

How Geophysicists' Intuition Helps Seismic Data Processing, Afshin Gholamy, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In geophysics, signals come with noise. It is desirable to minimize the effect of this noise. If we knew the probabilities of different values of signal and noise, we could use statistical filtering techniques. In geophysics, however, we rarely know the exact values of these probabilities; instead, we have to rely on the expertise and intuition of experts. We show how fuzzy techniques can transform this expertise into precise de-noising methods, we explain that the resulting methods indeed satisfy several natural requirements, and that these methods are in good accordance with heuristic techniques successfully used by geophysicists.

How To Speed Up Software Migration And Modernization: Successful Strategies Developed By Precisiating Expert Knowledge, Francisco Zapata, Octavio Lerma, Leobardo Valera, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Computers are getting faster and faster; the operating systems are getting more sophisticated. Often, these improvements necessitate that we migrate the existing software to the new platform. In the ideal world, the migrated software should run perfectly well on a new platform; however, in reality, when we try that, thousands of errors appear, errors that need correcting. As a result, software migration is usually a very time-consuming process. A natural way to speed up this process is to take into account that errors naturally fall into different categories, and often, a common correction can be applied to all error from …

Why It Is Important To Precisiate Goals, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen Mar 2015

Why It Is Important To Precisiate Goals, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

After Zadeh and Bellman explained how to optimize a function under fuzzy constraints, there have been many successful applications of this optimization. However, in many practical situations, it turns out to be more efficient to precisiate the objective function before performing optimization. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this empirical fact.

A Fundamental Unit Of O_K, Susana L. Munoz

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In the classical case we make use of Pells equation to compute units in the ring OF. Consider the parallel to the classical case and the quadratic field extension that creates the ring OK. We use the generalized Pell's equation to find the units in this ring since they are solutions. Through the use of continued fractions we may further characterize this ring and compute its units.

Distributed Kernelized Locality-Sensitive Hashing For Faster Image Based Navigation, Scott A. Hutchison Mar 2015

Distributed Kernelized Locality-Sensitive Hashing For Faster Image Based Navigation, Scott A. Hutchison

Theses and Dissertations

Content based image retrieval (CBIR) remains one of the most heavily researched areas in computer vision. Different image retrieval techniques and algorithms have been implemented and used in localization research, object recognition applications, and commercially by companies such as Facebook, Google, and Yahoo!. Current methods for image retrieval become problematic when implemented on image datasets that can easily reach billions of images. In order to process extremely large datasets, the computation must be distributed across a cluster of machines using software such as Apache Hadoop. There are many different algorithms for conducting content based image retrieval, but this research focuses …

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions V: Multiple Variables, Nataniel Greene Mar 2015

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions V: Multiple Variables, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

The multivariate theory of generalized least-squares is formulated here using the notion of generalized means. The multivariate generalized least-squares problem seeks an m dimensional hyperplane which minimizes the average generalized mean of the square deviations between the data and the hyperplane in m + 1 variables. The numerical examples presented suggest that a multivariate generalized least-squares method can be preferable to ordinary least-squares especially in situations where the data are ill- conditioned.

Neoproterozoic carbonate successions provide a new taphonomic window into the diversification of eukaryotes. We report recently discovered macroscopic organic warty sheets (MOWS) in macerates of limestone from the ca. 662-635 Ma Taishir Formation (Tsagaan Olom Group, Mongolia). Sheets are applanate. One surface contains raised ridges and conspicuous, ∼ 100-μm-tall warty protuberances with depressed tops that enclose internal cavities containing cellular structures. The Taishir MOWS may be the remains of unusual bacterial, protistan, or fungal biofilms, or a previously undocumented, extinct taxon. However, multiple lines of evidence including the morphology of warty protuberances and the presence of cellular architecture within protuberances …

A Conceptual Model To Evaluate Decisions For Service Profitability, Eng Lieh Ouh, Stan Jarzabek Mar 2015

A Conceptual Model To Evaluate Decisions For Service Profitability, Eng Lieh Ouh, Stan Jarzabek

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Service profitability depends on the cost of engineering a service for a given base of tenants, on service provisioning cost, and on the revenue gained from selling the service to that tenant base. The tenant base depends on the range of service variability, i.e., on Service Provider's ability to vary service requirements to meet tenant expectations. These various factors that have to do with service profitability form a complex web of information that makes it difficult to analyze and see the exact impact of decisions regarding the choice of service architecture or the use of service adaptation techniques. To make …

Natural And Anthropogenic Processes Contributing To Metal Enrichment In Surface Soils Of Central Pennsylvania, A. M.L. Kraepiel, Ashlee L.D. Dere, E. M. Herndon, Susan L. Brantley Mar 2015

Natural And Anthropogenic Processes Contributing To Metal Enrichment In Surface Soils Of Central Pennsylvania, A. M.L. Kraepiel, Ashlee L.D. Dere, E. M. Herndon, Susan L. Brantley

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Metals in soils may positively or negatively affect plants as well as soil micro-organisms and mesofauna, depending on their abundance and bioavailability. Atmospheric deposition and biological uplift commonly result in metal enrichment in surface soils, but the relative importance of these processes is not always resolved. Here, we used an integrated approach to study the cycling of phosphorus and a suite of metals from the soil to the canopy (and back) in a temperate watershed. The behavior of elements in these surface soils fell into three categories. First, Al, Fe, V, Co, and Cr showed little to no enrichment in …

Recently, a remote sensing study has been conducted over Bechevin Bay Channel, Alaska as part of a collaboration project between NOAA and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). The goal of the study to develop a procedure to prioritize survey areas and plan the annual deployment of Aids to Navigation (AtoN) along the channel. Bechevin Bay is considered a priority for marine surveying because it constitutes the easternmost passage through the Aleutians from the Bering Sea to the Gulf of Alaska. The channel is located in a mud flat area, where every winter the passage is closed due to ice cover. …

S-100 Overlays: A Brave New World?, Lee Alexander, C. Mcleay

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Marine Information Overlay (MIO) is a generic term used to describe chart and navigation related information that supplement the content that is already contained in an ENC. This includes both static and dynamic information such as tide/water level, current flow, meteorological, oceanographic, and environmental protection. With the advent of S-100 and S-101, there is increased interest in providing a wide variety of ‘new’ overlay information. This paper provides a brief history of S-57 MIOs. Examples of navigational and non-navigation MIOs are given in terms of how currently used, by who, and for what purpose. Recommendations are provided for making a …

Nautical Chart Adequacy Evaluation Using Publicly-Available Data, Anthony Klemm, Shachak Pe'eri, Ricardo Freire, John Nyberg, Shep M. Smith Lt

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The International Hydrographic Office (IHO) C-55 publication communicates the need to improve the collection, quality and availability of hydrographic data world-wide, while also monitoring and rectifying possible deficiencies and shortcomings that are presented on the chart. This task of evaluating the adequacy of nautical chart products poses a challenge to many national hydrographic offices. This stems from the dearth of readily available spatial information: namely, the lack of reliable and accessible vessel traffic data, and little means to assess the changing nature of both near-shore bathymetry and shoreline in a simple and reliable manner. In this paper, we present the …
