Estimating Relative Abundance Of Young-Of-Year American Eel, Anguilla Rostrata, In The Virginia Tributaries Of Chesapeake Bay (Spring 2014), Troy D. Tuckey, Mary C. Fabrizio

Reports

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) adopted the Interstate Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for the American Eel in November 1999. The FMP calls for efforts to collect American Eel data through both fishery-dependent and fishery-independent studies in coastal states. Consequently, member jurisdictions agreed to implement an annual survey for young-of-year (YOY) American Eels. The survey is intended to “…characterize trends in annual recruitment of the YOY eels over time [to produce a] qualitative appraisal of the annual recruitment of American Eel to the 4 U.S. Atlantic Coast” (ASMFC 2000). The development of these surveys began in 2000 with full …

Vibrational Microspectroscopy For Cancer Screening, Fiona Lyng, Ines Ramos, Ola Ibrahim, Hugh Byrne Mar 2015

Vibrational Microspectroscopy For Cancer Screening, Fiona Lyng, Ines Ramos, Ola Ibrahim, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Vibrational spectroscopy analyses vibrations within a molecule and can be used to characterise a molecular structure. Raman spectroscopy is one of the vibrational spectroscopic techniques, in which incident radiation is used to induce vibrations in the molecules of a sample, and the scattered radiation may be used to characterise the sample in a rapid and non-destructive manner. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a complementary vibrational spectroscopic technique based on the absorption of IR radiation by the sample. Molecules absorb specific frequencies of the incident light which are characteristic of their structure. IR and Raman spectroscopy are sensitive to subtle biochemical changes …

Multivariate Statistical Methodologies Applied In Biomedical Raman Spectroscopy: Assessing The Validity Of Partial Least Squares Regression Using Simulated Model Datasets, Mark E. Keating, Haq Nawaz, Franck Bonnier, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Raman spectroscopy is fast becoming a valuable analytical tool in a number of biomedical scenarios, most notably disease diagnostics. Importantly, the technique has also shown increasing promise in the assessment of drug interactions on a cellular and subcellular level, particularly when coupled with multivariate statistical analysis. However, an important consideration, both with Raman spectroscopy and the associated statistical methodologies, is the accuracy of these techniques and more specifically the sensitivities which can be achieved and ultimately the limits of detection of the various methods. The purpose of this study is thus the construction of a model simulated data set with …

The Steiner Problem On Closed Surfaces Of Constant Curvature, Andrew Logan Mar 2015

The Steiner Problem On Closed Surfaces Of Constant Curvature, Andrew Logan

Theses and Dissertations

The n-point Steiner problem in the Euclidean plane is to find a least length path network connecting n points. In this thesis we will demonstrate how to find a least length path network T connecting n points on a closed 2-dimensional Riemannian surface of constant curvature by determining a region in the covering space that is guaranteed to contain T. We will then provide an algorithm for solving the n-point Steiner problem on such a surface.

Re-Calibration Of The Periods Of Selected Cepheids From The Hubble Space Telescope Key Project Using Time Correction, Muxue Liu Mar 2015

Re-Calibration Of The Periods Of Selected Cepheids From The Hubble Space Telescope Key Project Using Time Correction, Muxue Liu

Theses and Dissertations

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was originally proposed and funded in the 1970's with a launch planned for the early 1980's. However, the launch finally occurred on April 24, 1990, largely due to the Challenger accident. Once launched in 1990, one of HST's earliest projects was the Key Project. One of the main purposes of the Key Project was to calibrate the distances to nearby galaxies and determine a definitive value of the Hubble constant H0. All secondary distance determination methods were based on the period-luminosity relation of Cepheid variable stars. This thesis examines the Cepheid data from the Key …

Detecting Learning Styles In Video Games, Benjamin Cooley Mar 2015

Detecting Learning Styles In Video Games, Benjamin Cooley

Master's Theses

Video games are increasingly becoming more intelligent, able to adapt themselves to the individual gamer. Learning styles are a set of models used to categorize people into different types of learners to explain why some people learn better through different methods. Since learning and exploration are such fundamental parts of the video game experience, it is interesting to consider the possibility of applying these learning style models to video games, allowing the video game to adapt to its player, providing a better experience. To consider such adaptation, the game must first be able to detect that learning style from how …

Surrogate Markers For Time-Varying Treatments And Outcomes, Jesse Hsu, Edward Kennedy, Jason Roy, Alisa Stephens-Shields, Dylan Small, Marshall Joffe Feb 2015

Surrogate Markers For Time-Varying Treatments And Outcomes, Jesse Hsu, Edward Kennedy, Jason Roy, Alisa Stephens-Shields, Dylan Small, Marshall Joffe

Edward H. Kennedy

A surrogate marker is a variable commonly used in clinical trials to guide treatment decisions when the outcome of ultimate interest is not available. A good surrogate marker is one where the treatment effect on the surrogate is a strong predictor of the effect of treatment on the outcome. We review the situation when there is one treatment delivered at baseline, one surrogate measured at one later time point, and one ultimate outcome of interest and discuss new issues arising when variables are time-varying. Most of the literature on surrogate markers has only considered simple settings with one treatment, one …

Mind The Gap: Formal Ethics Policies And Chemical Scientists' Everyday Practices In Academia And Industry, Laurel Smith-Doerr, Itai Vardi

Laurel Smith-Doerr

Asymmetrical convergence is the increasing overlap between academic and industrial sectors, but with academia moving closer toward for-profit industrial norms than vice versa. Although this concept, developed by Kleinman and Vallas, is useful, processes of asymmetrical convergence in daily laboratory life are largely unexplored. Here, observations of three lab groups of chemical scientists in academic and industry contexts illustrate variation in interactions with ethics-related policies (as defined by the respondents). Findings show more tension for academic science with business-based practices, such as the move toward greater accountability, than for industrial science with academic practices. This asymmetry is evident in the …

Polarimetric Modeling Of Corotating Interaction Regions (Cirs) Threading Massive-Star Winds., Richard Ignace, N. St-Louis, F. Proulx-Giraldeau Feb 2015

Polarimetric Modeling Of Corotating Interaction Regions (Cirs) Threading Massive-Star Winds., Richard Ignace, N. St-Louis, F. Proulx-Giraldeau

Richard Ignace

Massive star winds are complex radiation-hydrodynamic (sometimes magnetohydrodynamic) outflows that are propelled by their enormously strong luminosities. The winds are often found to be structured and variable, but can also display periodic or quasi-periodic behavior in a variety of wind diagnostics. The regular variations observed in putatively single stars, especially in UV wind lines, have often been attributed to corotating interaction regions (CIRs) like those seen in the solar wind. We present light curves for variable polarization from winds with CIR structures. We develop a model for a time-independent CIR based on a kinematical description. Assuming optically thin electron scattering, …

Generic Constructions Of Different Cryptographic Primitives Over Various Public Key Paradigms., Sumit Kumar Pandey Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis, we study the generic construction of some cryptographic primitives over various public key paradigms like traditional Public Key Cryptosystems and Identity Based Cryptosystems. It can be broadly divided into two categories1. Generic construction of some highly secure cryptographic primitives from less secure cryptographic primitives, and2. Generic construction of some complex cryptographic primitives from basic cryptographic primitives. Mathematical tools provide a way to achieve cryptographic functionality like confidentiality, authentication, data-integrity, non-repudiation etc., but in the case of complex cryptographic functionality like achieving confidentiality and authentication at the same time or confidentiality, authentication and non-repudiation at the same time …

Mapping The Decision Points And Climate Information Use Of Agricultural Producers Across The U.S. Corn Belt, Tonya Haigh, Eugene S. Takle, Jeffrey Andresen, Melissa Widhalm, J. Stuart Carlton, Jim Angel Feb 2015

Mapping The Decision Points And Climate Information Use Of Agricultural Producers Across The U.S. Corn Belt, Tonya Haigh, Eugene S. Takle, Jeffrey Andresen, Melissa Widhalm, J. Stuart Carlton, Jim Angel

Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

The usefulness of climate information for agricultural risk management hinges on its availability and relevance to the producer when climate-sensitive decisions are being made. Climate information providers are challenged with the task of balancing forecast availability and lead time with acceptable forecast skill, which requires an improved understanding of the timing of agricultural decision making. Achieving a useful balance may also require an expansion of inquiry to include use of non-forecast climate information (i.e. historical climate information) in agricultural decision making. Decision calendars have proven valuable for identifying opportunities for using different types of climate information. The extent to which …

Self-Organized Assemblies Of Colloidal Particles Obtained From An Aligned Chromonic Liquid Crystal Dispersion, N. Zimmermann, G. Jünnemann-Held, Peter J. Collings, H.-S. Kitzerow

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

The behavior of mono-disperse colloidal particles in a chromonic liquid crystal was investigated. Poly(methyl methacrylate) spherical particles with three different functionalizations, with and without surface charges, were utilized in the nematic and columnar phases of disodium cromoglycate solutions. The nematic phase was completely aligned parallel to the glass substrates by a simple rubbing technique, and the columnar phase showed regions of similar alignment. The behavior of the colloidal particles in the chromonic liquid crystal depended critically on the functionality, with bromine functionalized particles not dispersing at all, and cationic trimethylammonium and epoxy functionalized particles dispersing well in the isotropic phase …

Electrochemical Monitoring Of Cell Wall-Regulated Transient Extracellular Oxidative Burst From Single Plant Cells, Jun-Tao Liu, Yan-Ling Liu, Zhi Cheng, Shi-Jing Chen, Wei-Hua Huang Feb 2015

Electrochemical Monitoring Of Cell Wall-Regulated Transient Extracellular Oxidative Burst From Single Plant Cells, Jun-Tao Liu, Yan-Ling Liu, Zhi Cheng, Shi-Jing Chen, Wei-Hua Huang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Oxidative burst by rapid, transient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a fundamental process for plant disease defense and signal transduction. ROS can be protective or toxic depending on their concentrations, and critical balance between ROS production and scavenging is regulated by complex and perfect mechanisms in plant cells. However, the process of rapid and transient ROS burst from plant cells and their regulatory mechanisms are far from being completely understood, owing to the methodological obstacles in real-time monitoring such a fast process. In this work, we showed the application of microelectrode electrochemistry with high spatiotemporal resolution to monitor …

A Multi-Channel Electrochemical Immunosensing System With Polyhrp-Based Signal Amplification For The Detection Of Tumor Markers, Wang-Ping Deng, Yan-Zhi Dou, Jing Su, Lin Hao, Shi-Ping Song, Chun-Hai Fan

Journal of Electrochemistry

We have developed a multi-channel electrochemical immunosensing system for the detection of α-fetoprotein (AFP). The sensing system consisted of carbon screen-printed electrode (SPCE) arrays and polyHRP-based signal amplification probes. AFP antigens could bind to both capture antibodies immobilized on electrode arrays ant detection antibodies (anti-AFP IgG developed in rabbit). The anti-rabbit IgG conjugated to poly-horseradish peroxidase were used as a signaling probe to bind to the immuno-complex. The current signals were harvested by a home-made multi-channels electrochemical detector. AFP could be detected in the concentration ranges of 64 pg·mL-1 ~ 250 ng·mL-1. The detection limit was as …
