Semantic Search Using A Similarity Graph, Lubomir Stanchev Feb 2015

Semantic Search Using A Similarity Graph, Lubomir Stanchev

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Given a set of documents and an input query that is expressed in a natural language, the problem of document search is retrieving the most relevant documents. Unlike most existing systems that perform document search based on keywords matching, we propose a search method that considers the meaning of the words in the query and the document. As a result, our algorithm can return documents that have no words in common with the input query as long as the documents are relevant. For example, a document that contains the words “Ford”, “Chrysler” and “General Motors” multiple times is surely relevant …

Collaborative Research: Byrd Glacier Flow Dynamics, Gordon S. Hamilton Feb 2015

Collaborative Research: Byrd Glacier Flow Dynamics, Gordon S. Hamilton

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

This award supports a project to understand the flow dynamics of large, fast-moving outlet glaciers that drain the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. The project includes an integrated field, remote sensing and modeling study of Byrd Glacier which is a major pathway for the discharge of mass from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) to the ocean. Recent work has shown that the glacier can undergo short-lived but significant changes in flow speed in response to perturbations in its boundary conditions. Because outlet glacier speeds exert a major control on ice sheet mass balance and modulate the ice sheet contribution to …

Biological Control Via "Ecological" Damping: An Approach That Attenuates Non-Target Effects, Rana D. Parshad, Kelly Black, Emmanuel Quansah, Matthew Beauregard Feb 2015

Biological Control Via "Ecological" Damping: An Approach That Attenuates Non-Target Effects, Rana D. Parshad, Kelly Black, Emmanuel Quansah, Matthew Beauregard

Faculty Publications

In this work we develop and analyze a mathematical model of biological control to prevent or attenuate the explosive increase of an invasive species population in a three-species food chain. We allow for finite time blowup in the model as a mathematical construct to mimic the explosive increase in population, enabling the species to reach “disastrous” levels, in a finite time. We next propose various controls to drive down the invasive population growth and, in certain cases, eliminate blow-up. The controls avoid chemical treatments and/or natural enemy introduction, thus eliminating various non-target effects associated with such classical methods. We refer …

An Investigation Of Cognitive Implications In The Design Of Computer Games, Robert Haworth Feb 2015

An Investigation Of Cognitive Implications In The Design Of Computer Games, Robert Haworth

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Computer games have been touted for their ability to engage players in cognitive activities (e.g., decision making, learning, planning, problem solving). By ‘computer game’ we mean any game that uses computational technology as its platform, regardless of the actual hardware or software; games on personal computers, tablets, game consoles, cellphones, or specialized equipment can all be called computer games. However, there remains much uncertainty regarding how to design computer games so that they support, facilitate, and promote the reflective, effortful, and conscious performance of cognitive activities. The goal of this dissertation is to relieve some of this uncertainty, so that …

Design And Synthesis Of Bioactive Peptidomimetics, Yaogang Hu Feb 2015

Design And Synthesis Of Bioactive Peptidomimetics, Yaogang Hu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Protein-Protein Interactions (PPIs) play a very important role in biological functions and therefore the inhibition of specific Protein-Protein Interactions has a huge therapeutic value. The most successful small molecular PPIs inhibitors do not fit with the prevalent `Rule of Five' drug profile. To overcome the disadvantages of small molecular PPIs inhibitors, peptide based PPIs inhibitors were developed. Herein we describe the development of a new class of peptidomimetics AA-peptides. The AApeptides were designed based on chiral PNA backbone. Substitution of nucleobases yields AApeptides that are resistant to proteolysis and capable of mimicking peptides. Two types of AApeptides were discussed in …

Mathematical Analysis Of Spherical Triangle (Spherical Trigonometry By H.C. Rajpoot), Harish Chandra Rajpoot Rajpoot Hcr Feb 2015

Mathematical Analysis Of Spherical Triangle (Spherical Trigonometry By H.C. Rajpoot), Harish Chandra Rajpoot Rajpoot Hcr

Harish Chandra Rajpoot H.C. Rajpoot

All the important parameters of a spherical triangle have been derived by Mr H.C. Rajpoot by using simple geometry & trigonometry. All the articles (formula) are very practical & simple to apply in case of a spherical triangle to calculate all its important parameters such as solid angle, covered surface area, interior angles etc. & also useful for calculating all the parameters of the corresponding plane triangle obtained by joining all the vertices of a spherical triangle by straight lines. These formula can also be used to calculate all the parameters of the right pyramid obtained by joining all the …

Collaborative Research: A Reaction Kinetics Database For Modeling Biogeochemical Systems, Amanda A. Olsen Feb 2015

Collaborative Research: A Reaction Kinetics Database For Modeling Biogeochemical Systems, Amanda A. Olsen

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

Understanding how quickly environmental reactions take place is the goal of EarthKin, a geochemical database focusing on the rates of geochemical reactions. EarthKin scientists from University of Maine, Penn State, Columbia, and Saint Francis University will compile existing reaction rates into a one-stop database that will allow access to researchers working on a diverse range of projects ranging from removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and permanently storing it beneath the ground to cleaning up contaminated environmental sites. When completed EarthKin will be available to scientists free via the web at www.earthchem.org. Not only will we compile existing data, but …

Collaborative Research: Glacier-Ocean Coupling In A Large East Greenland Fjord, Gordon S. Hamilton Feb 2015

Collaborative Research: Glacier-Ocean Coupling In A Large East Greenland Fjord, Gordon S. Hamilton

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

This award will support a study of glacier-fjord interactions in east Greenland. The 'Intellectual Merit' of the proposed study lies in the current understanding that the contribution of the Greenland Ice Sheet to sea level rise more than doubled in the last seven years, mostly because of a widespread and nearly simultaneous acceleration of many glaciers that terminate at tidewater in deep fjords. Understanding the causes of changes in glacier dynamics, and predicting their future trajectories is a topic of enormous scientific and societal importance. The Greenland fjords provide an intimate connection between the ice sheet and the ocean and, …
