Mass Spectral Studies To Investigate Butylbenzene Fragmentation Pathway And Pyrolysis Products., Balasubramaniam Lingam Jan 2015

Mass Spectral Studies To Investigate Butylbenzene Fragmentation Pathway And Pyrolysis Products., Balasubramaniam Lingam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation research, two fundamental studies involving gas chromatography mass spectrometry of n-butylbenzene and pyrolysis products are presented. In the first study, fragmentation pathways of n-butylbenzene in quadrupole ion trap have been investigated. At low energy, product ion corresponding to m/z 92 and m/z 91 are formed via competitive parallel dissociation. Studies have also shown that at higher energy m/z 92 has sufficient internal energy to undergo further fragmentation yielding m/z 91 via consecutive dissociation. Thus in order to discern the fragmentation pathways of n-butylbenzene, the technique of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) was applied to the mass spectral data. …

Observations, Thermochemical Calculations, And Modeling Of Exoplanetary Atmospheres, Jasmina Blecic Jan 2015

Observations, Thermochemical Calculations, And Modeling Of Exoplanetary Atmospheres, Jasmina Blecic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation as a whole aims to provide the means to better understand hot-Jupiter planets through observing, performing thermochemical calculations, and modeling their atmospheres. We used Spitzer multi-wavelength secondary-eclipse observations to characterize planetary atmospheres. We chose targets with high signal-to-noise ratios, as their deep eclipses allow us to detect signatures of spectral features and assess planetary atmospheric structure and composition with greater certainty. Chapter 1 gives a short introduction. Chapter 2 presents the Spitzer secondary-eclipse analysis and atmospheric characterization of WASP-14b. The decrease in flux when a planet passes behind its host star reveals the planet dayside thermal emission, which, …

Selective Electro-Magnetic Absorbers Based On Metal-Dielectric-Metal Thin-Film Cavities, Janardan Nath Jan 2015

Selective Electro-Magnetic Absorbers Based On Metal-Dielectric-Metal Thin-Film Cavities, Janardan Nath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Efficient absorption of light is required for a large number of applications such as thermo-photovoltaics,thermal imaging, bio-sensing, thermal emitters, astronomy, and stealth technology. Strong light absorbers found in nature with high intrinsic losses such as carbon black, metal-black, and carbon nano-tubes etc. are bulky, not design-tunable and are hard to pattern for micro- and nano- devices. We developed thin-film, high performance absorbers in the visible, near-, mid-, long-wave - and far-IR region based on a 3 layer metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) structure. We fabricated a 3-layerMDMabsorber with large band-widths in the visible and near IR spectral range without any lithographic patterning. This …

Characterizing Exoplanet Atmospheres: From Light-Curve Observations To Radiative-Transfer Modeling, Patricio Cubillos Vallejos Jan 2015

Characterizing Exoplanet Atmospheres: From Light-Curve Observations To Radiative-Transfer Modeling, Patricio Cubillos Vallejos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Multi-wavelength transit and secondary-eclipse light-curve observations are some of the most powerful techniques to probe the thermo-chemical properties of exoplanets. Although the large planet-to-star brightness contrast and few available spectral bands produce data with low signal-to-noise ratios, a Bayesian approach can robustly reveal what constraints we can set, without over-interpreting the data. Here I performed an end-to-end analysis of transiting exoplanet data. I analyzed space-telescope data for three planets to characterize their atmospheres and refine their orbits, investigated correlated noise estimators, and contributed to the development of the respective data-analysis pipelines. Chapters 2 and 3 describe the Photometry for Orbits, …

Folate Conjugated Hyperbranched Polyester Nanoparticles For Prostate Tumor-Targeted Delivery Of A Cytotoxic Peptide Via Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen, Orielyz Flores-Fernandez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prostate Cancer is the second most deadly cancer in men, after lung cancer. The need for new and effective therapeutics that can constrain prostate cancer progression are challenged by the lack of suitable delivery strategies that target prostate cancer tissue. To study CT20p as potential chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of prostate cancer we proposed the use of targetable hyperbranched polyester (HBPE) based nanoparticles as delivery system. Folic acid was conjugated to the nanocarrier to improve the selectivity of the nanoparticle towards specific cell surface targets in prostate cancer cell lines. Specifically we evaluated LNCaP that up-regulated the PSMA receptor. …

Resource Management In Large-Scale Systems, Ashkan Paya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is resource management in large-scale systems. Our primary concerns are energy management and practical principles for self-organization and self-management. The main contributions of our work are: 1. Models. We proposed several models for different aspects of resource management, e.g., energy-aware load balancing and application scaling for the cloud ecosystem, hierarchical architecture model for self-organizing and self-manageable systems and a new cloud delivery model based on auction-driven self-organization approach. 2. Algorithms. We also proposed several different algorithms for the models described above. Algorithms such as coalition formation, combinatorial auctions and clustering algorithm for scale-free organizations of …

An Integrated Framework For Automated Data Collection And Processing For Discrete Event Simulation Models, Carlos Rodriguez Jan 2015

An Integrated Framework For Automated Data Collection And Processing For Discrete Event Simulation Models, Carlos Rodriguez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Discrete Events Simulation (DES) is a powerful tool of modeling and analysis used in different disciplines. DES models require data in order to determine the different parameters that drive the simulations. The literature about DES input data management indicates that the preparation of necessary input data is often a highly manual process, which causes inefficiencies, significant time consumption and a negative user experience. The focus of this research investigation is addressing the manual data collection and processing (MDCAP) problem prevalent in DES projects. This research investigation presents an integrated framework to solve the MDCAP problem by classifying the data needed …

Determination Of The Structure Of Sphingomyelin By Tandem Mass Spectrometry And Matrix - Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization, Antonio Ganios

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Mass spectrometry is a method that uses masses to determine the structure of a compound. This is completed by first charging the compound until it is a cation or anion, and then its molecular weight can be determined by measuring a mass to charge ratio. The focus of this study was determination of sphingomyelin’s structure. The purpose of this was that sphingomyelin has been shown to play a critical role in many biological pathways and being able to identify this lipid could prove to be beneficial for preventative medicine. Utilizing electrospray ionization (ESI) Quadruple-Time-of-flight (Q-TOF) mass spectrometry on a Waters …

Application Of Lipid Styryl Dye For Staining Intracytoplasmic Membranes In Gram-Negative Bacteria, Theodore J. Hammer Jan 2015

Application Of Lipid Styryl Dye For Staining Intracytoplasmic Membranes In Gram-Negative Bacteria, Theodore J. Hammer

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Intracytoplasmic membranes are structures that form within cells which help facilitate a variety of different metabolic processes. This feature of intracellular membranes makes them particularly valuable for studying compartmentalization and cell dynamics in bacteria. In the past, transmission electron microscopy has been the primary method for imaging bacteria with intracytoplasmic membranes. Because transmission electron microscopy takes images of a cell in fixed slices, it’s impossible to follow a cell’s growth and development over time. Fluorescence microscopy is a particularly effective method of measurement that can combat these issues when evaluating live bacterial cells. Here, standard biochemical laboratory procedures were used …

The Effects Of Substrate Roughness In Air And Water On The Gecko Adhesive System, Amanda Palecek Jan 2015

The Effects Of Substrate Roughness In Air And Water On The Gecko Adhesive System, Amanda Palecek

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In an effort to better understand the fascinating gecko adhesive system, scientists have long tested the abilities of the gecko in controlled conditions that mimic the gecko’s native environment. The effects of humidity, environmental temperature, and exposure to water have all been tested. Roughness, however has not been studied in great detail. Surfaces of varying roughnesses are all over the gecko’s natural environment. We tested geckos on hydrophilic silicon carbide sandpapers of varying roughnesses in both air and water to attempt to better study the effects of roughness on gecko adhesion. When tested on the rougher (1 µm) surface, the …

Characterization Of Noncovalent Complexes Of Polyelectrolytes By Mass Spectrometry, Anthony J. Marino Jan 2015

Characterization Of Noncovalent Complexes Of Polyelectrolytes By Mass Spectrometry, Anthony J. Marino

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Various ions of poly-L-lysine and polystyrene sulfonic acid were successfully observed first within a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometer and subsequently in an electrospray ionization mass spectrometer. The successful ionization of these polymers allowed for studies to be performed on the noncovalent interactions between the two. Noncovalent interactions were effectively studied on both instruments, but further quantified using tandem mass spectrometry found within the MALDI system and ion-mobility mass spectrometry found within the electrospray ionization system. As a result of employing the use of ion-mobility, various different stoichiometries and charges of polyelectrolyte complexes could be distinguished.

Origins Of Life On Earth: Mineral Effects On Vesicle Formation And Permeability, Jacob Morris Jan 2015

Origins Of Life On Earth: Mineral Effects On Vesicle Formation And Permeability, Jacob Morris

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Understanding how life could have emerged on Earth is a very old problem that is still far from being resolved. Minerals have long been proposed to play a role in the formation of the first cell, but only few experimental data were reported concerning the mineral-lipid interactions. In the present work, calcein leakage assay, a fluorescence based experiment, and dynamic light scattering measurements were used to examine the effects of mineral properties and of MgCl2 on the formation and the stability of vesicles formed from single-chain amphiphiles (SCA), which are believed to have been present on early Earth. The …

Investigating Use Of Beta Coefficients For Stock Predictions, Jeffrey Swensen Jan 2015

Investigating Use Of Beta Coefficients For Stock Predictions, Jeffrey Swensen

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

By using previous stock market data, investors can get a good sense of how to invest for the future. A common way to determine what stocks are riskier than others is by using the beta coefficient. This paper investigates the relationship between the overall S&P 500 market and certain individual stocks to see if we can use past stock return data to predict the future riskiness of certain stocks. Correlation between the individual stocks and the S&P 500 will allow us to determine the relationship between the two. Finding the beta coefficients for the individual stock market will allow investors …

Sharp Rna Recognition Motif Optimizations, Extensions, And Mutations For Use In 2d And 3d Nmr Experiments, Shaun M. Christie

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

SMRT/HDAC Associated Repressor Protein interacts with the long noncoding RNA, produced by SRA, by binding at the RRMs. Three projects were done to prepare the truncated proteins for use in 2D and 3D NMR experiments. The first focuses on RRM 3 and its optimization during the purification process. The second focuses on RRM 2-4, which was found to be missing two alpha helices that may be important for protein stability. These helices can also interact with RRM 3 as well due to the tight association of RRMs 3 and 4. The two step PCR extension of RRM 2-4 was assumed …

Reactions Of Hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene And Lewis Bases To Produce [Pon]3: Methanesulfonic Acid And Dimethylformamide Reactions With [Pcl2n]3, Savannah R. Snyder Jan 2015

Reactions Of Hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene And Lewis Bases To Produce [Pon]3: Methanesulfonic Acid And Dimethylformamide Reactions With [Pcl2n]3, Savannah R. Snyder

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Several chlorine/oxygen exchange reactions of [PCl2N]3 were investigated with the goal of forming [PON]3, a precursor to PON materials. The reaction of MeSO3H and Et3N with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene ([PCl2N]3) has been claimed to produce a [PON]3 single molecule. This reaction could not be reproduced. Only partially oxygenated phosphazenes have been obtained. Similarly, in the reaction of [PCl2N]3 and dimethylformamide (DMF) both partial and full oxygenation occurs. Stoichiometry appears to be crucial in determining the species that is produced in both reactions. These products were …

Stormwater management features such as bioretention systems and rain gardens provide valuable ecosystem services. They are ecologically engineered to counteract surrounding urban land use practices. However, new stormwater management features may also create an environment for invasive plant species. Invasive plants can affect ecosystem services, and have devastating economic impacts. This study was conducted to determine connections between surrounding land use and maintenance practices in stormwater management features throughout Greater Cleveland and the presence of invasive plant species. Initial site visits were conducted for 164 bioretention systems and rain gardens in Greater Cleveland. They were analyzed for physical characteristics, surrounding …

Case Transition Format And Lexical Decision Performance: Does Spacing Reduce The Benefit Of Orthographic Regularity?, Kristyn Oravec, Maryam Assar, Hannah Princic Jan 2015

Case Transition Format And Lexical Decision Performance: Does Spacing Reduce The Benefit Of Orthographic Regularity?, Kristyn Oravec, Maryam Assar, Hannah Princic

Undergraduate Research Posters 2015

Some models of visual word identification propose that identification is analytic— mediated exclusively by letter identification. However, some studies have shown that there are phenomena that suggest a route to word identification involves holistic stimulus properties. In previous research, using a lexical decision task, in which participants are asked to determine whether letter strings are words or nonwords, we have found that response times to orthographically regular words (i.e., lowercase, uppercase, and initial uppercase formats) are faster than those to orthographically irregular words (i.e., words that include a case transition other than initial uppercase to lowercase). In this experiment, we …

Downstream Inundations Caused By Federal Flood Control Dam Operations In A Changing Climate: Getting The Proper Mix Of Takings, Tort, And Compensation, Robert Haskell Abrams, Jacqueline Bertelsen Jan 2015

Downstream Inundations Caused By Federal Flood Control Dam Operations In A Changing Climate: Getting The Proper Mix Of Takings, Tort, And Compensation, Robert Haskell Abrams, Jacqueline Bertelsen

Journal Publications

The 2012 United States Supreme Court case Arkansas Game & Fish Commission v. United States presented the Court with a claim that the property of a landowner downstream of a flood control dam was taken without compensation as a result of non-permanent inundations of low lying portions of that parcel caused by a change in the dam's pattern of releases. The Court held that, "government-induced flooding temporary in duration gains no automatic exemption from Takings Clause inspection" and must, instead, be tested according to the Court's usual precedents governing temporary physical invasions and regulatory takings. The Federal Circuit held a …

Regulation Of Sister Chromatid Cohesion By Eco-1 And Wapl-1 During Meiosis And Mitosis, Kyle T. Schroeder Jan 2015

Regulation Of Sister Chromatid Cohesion By Eco-1 And Wapl-1 During Meiosis And Mitosis, Kyle T. Schroeder

Undergraduate Research Posters 2015

Cohesin is a widely conserved, tetrameric protein complex that tethers replicated sister chromatids during meiosis and mitosis. Two cohesin subunits, SMC-1 and SMC-3, and a third subunit, the α-kleisin, form a ring proposed to encircle sister chromatids. Different kleisins associate with cohesin during mitosis and meiosis. SCC-1 is the mitotic kleisin. Meiotic cohesin can associate with either REC-8 or COH-3/4. REC-8 and COH-3/4 cohesins differ greatly in their functional properties, indicating that the kleisin determines meiotic cohesin function. Early in meiosis, REC-8 and COH-3/4 cohesins are triggered to become cohesive at different times and by different mechanisms. Later in meiosis, …

Preliminary Investigation Of The Role Of Open Bigrams In Word Perception: Is There A Benefit To Having Flankers That Consist Of Letters In The Word?, Maryam Assar, Kristyn Oravec, Hannah Princic, Amy Palinski Jan 2015

Preliminary Investigation Of The Role Of Open Bigrams In Word Perception: Is There A Benefit To Having Flankers That Consist Of Letters In The Word?, Maryam Assar, Kristyn Oravec, Hannah Princic, Amy Palinski

Undergraduate Research Posters 2015

Most investigators of word identification agree that information is processed through a hierarchical system in which units at progressively higher levels respond to features, letters, letter combinations (e.g., pairs, or bigrams), and possibly words. Grainger et al. (2014) found support for the role of adjacent-letter bigrams in an experiment in which participants saw target strings flanked by bigrams, such as BI BIRD RD and CE BIVS NT, and judged whether the targets were words. They found, for words, that flanking bigrams facilitated performance when the flanking bigrams contained letters from the target, and that the order of bigrams relative to …
