Test Of Scientific Literacy Skills (Tosls) Indicates Limited Scientific Thinking Gains As A Result Of Science And Mathematics General Education, Pamela M. Propsom, William M. Tobin, Jacqueline R. Roberts

Interdisciplinary Faculty Scholarship

A number of instruments designed to measure scientific literacy exist, but none has been used to assess improvements in undergraduates’ scientific thinking over their college career. This study utilized the Test of Scientific Literacy Skills (TOSLS) in a longitudinal fashion to measure scientific thinking gains of over 800 students from matriculation to graduation at a small liberal arts college. We found the TOSLS to be a useful assessment instrument. Our results indicated rather small benefits of science general education overall, though there were larger improvements for some demographic groups (i.e., women, first-generation college students). STEM majors showed much greater development …

Uniform Distributions On Curves And Quantization, Joseph Rosenblatt, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The basic goal of quantization for probability distribution is to reduce the number of values, which is typically uncountable, describing a probability distribution to some finite set and thus to make an approximation of a continuous probability distribution by a discrete distribution. It has broad application in signal processing and data compression. In this paper, first we define the uniform distributions on different curves such as a line segment, a circle, and the boundary of an equilateral triangle. Then, we give the exact formulas to determine the optimal sets of n -means and the n th quantization errors for different …

The Sharp Bounds Of A Quasi-Isometry Of P-Adic Numbers In A Subset Real Plane, Kathleen Zopff Apr 2023

The Sharp Bounds Of A Quasi-Isometry Of P-Adic Numbers In A Subset Real Plane, Kathleen Zopff

Undergraduate Theses

P-adic numbers are numbers valued by their divisibility by high powers of some prime, p. These numbers are an important concept in number theory that are used in major ideas such as the Reimann Hypothesis and Andrew Wiles’ proof of Fermat’s last theorem, and also have applications in cryptography. In this project, we will explore various visualizations of p-adic numbers. In particular, we will look at a mapping of p-adic numbers into the real plane which constructs a fractal similar to a Sierpinski p-gon. We discuss the properties of this map and give formulas for the sharp bounds of its …

Cloud Microphysical Response To Entrainment And Mixing Is Locally Inhomogeneous And Globally Homogeneous: Evidence From The Lab, Jaemin Yeom, Ian Helman, Prasanth Prabhakaran, Jesse Anderson, Fan Yang, Raymond Shaw, Will Cantrell

Michigan Tech Research Data

The effects of entrainment-mixing on the cloud droplet size distribution are examined in the Pi cloud chamber that creates a turbulent supersaturated environment for cloud formation. The experiments are conducted with a temperature-controlled flange to mimic the entrainment-mixing process. The entrainment zone is created at the center of the top surface of the chamber, allowing dry air of controlled temperature (Te) and flow rate (Qe) to flow into the mixing cloud region. Due to the large-scale circulation, the downwind region is directly affected by entrained dry air from the flange, whereas the upwind region is representative …

Theory Of Invariant Manifold And Foliation And Uniqueness Of Center Manifold Dynamics, Bo Deng

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Here we prove that the dynamics on any two center-manifolds of a fixed point of any Ck,1 dynamical system of finite dimension with k ≥ 1 are Ck-conjugate to each other. For pedagogical purpose, we also extend Perron’s method for differential equations to diffeomorphisms to construct the theory of invariant manifolds and invariant foliations at fixed points of dynamical systems of finite dimensions.

Synthesis Of 2-Bromo-6-Alkylaminopyridines, 2,6-Dialkylaminopyridines, And Tren Based Ligands, Stephanie E. Carter Apr 2023

Synthesis Of 2-Bromo-6-Alkylaminopyridines, 2,6-Dialkylaminopyridines, And Tren Based Ligands, Stephanie E. Carter

Honors College Theses

Extended metal atom chains (EMAC) are multimetallic complexes that feature a linear metal chain with metal-metal bonds surrounded by stabilizing ligand molecules. When EMACs are formed with paramagnetic metal ions, unique magnetic properties can be derived from direct metal to metal communication. The challenge is that EMAC complexes are challenging to synthesize due to the inherent weakness of most M-M bonds and the specificity of the ligands required to stabilize EMACs. In prior work by the Guillet group, the silyl aminopyridine (SAP) ligands were observed to stabilize very unique triiron complexes, but they were inherently unstable. In other work, scaffolded …
