Monitoring Air Quality Post-Environmental Disasters Using Remote Sensing, Abigail Kline
Monitoring Air Quality Post-Environmental Disasters Using Remote Sensing, Abigail Kline
Student Symposium
East Palestine Ohio, is a small town that recently suffered from a train derailment carrying a toxic chemical known as vincyl chloride. In addition to the release of this chemical, particulate matter was ejected into the atmosphere following a controlled explosion of the train. Air pollution a major envirnmental hazard that affects human and non-human life, and so the monitoring pollution is extremely important. Remote sensing may be a viable way to monitor, by using readily available satellite data.
Estimating Supraglacial Melt Lake Volume Changes In West Central Greenland Using Multiple Remote Sensing Methods, Wesley Rancher
Estimating Supraglacial Melt Lake Volume Changes In West Central Greenland Using Multiple Remote Sensing Methods, Wesley Rancher
Student Symposium
The Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) is losing ice mass as the climate warms. Supraglacial melt lakes (SGLs), which are present in the ablation (melt) zone of the GrIS are found to be responsive - and reinforce - changes in glaciological and climatological dynamics. Developing a spatiotemporal model to monitor lake volume change throughout the melt season (late-April through September) can enhance our understanding of subsequent GrIS changes. Supraglacial melt lakes accumulate in volume and in some cases drain to the ice sheet base during the melting season. In this study we utilize Landsat satellite imagery paired with high resolution digital …
Control Of Shear Layers Using Heating Patterns, Shoyon Panday
Control Of Shear Layers Using Heating Patterns, Shoyon Panday
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The presence of spatially modulated flows is universal in nature. Distributed heating and surface roughness are the most common elements to cause non-uniformity in the flows. Spatially distributed heating leads to fundamentally distinct convection, different from the classical Rayleigh-Bénard instability. Interestingly, the onset of convective motion due to horizontal temperature gradients requires no critical conditions – a forced response. At the same time, surface roughness is known to significantly influence flow behaviours and heat transfer characteristics. The current work aims to analyze modulated flows and assess their potential as a mixing technique for low Reynolds number flows. Spanwise modulations (perpendicular …

Creating Characters In A Game Based Learning System, Jaehyun Park, Siegwart Mayr
Creating Characters In A Game Based Learning System, Jaehyun Park, Siegwart Mayr
Campus Research Day
Gamification is the idea of adding video game elements into a non-gaming context, such as for educational or business purposes. Game-based learning takes that idea one step further by not only adding elements of video games, but turning the whole process into a game-like structure.
The Center for Innovation and Research in Computing (CIRC) is currently developing a game-based learning system that can be used in place of a traditional classroom setting. The focus of this research work is on the relationship between users and characters within a course in the Character Module. The Character Module encompasses everything to do …

Open Data Indicates That Collegedale Could Be A Bluezone, Tristan Deschamps, Alva Johnson
Open Data Indicates That Collegedale Could Be A Bluezone, Tristan Deschamps, Alva Johnson
Campus Research Day
A blue zone is an indicator of exceptional health in a community. Adventists have a blue zone community in Loma Linda, but there has been little research into other Adventist populated areas that could be blue zones. Therefore, our goal is to show that open data suggests that a blue zone may exist near Southern Adventist University, specifically in Collegedale. This data has been gathered from different federal sources, including, the CDC, the US Census Bureau, the Tennessee Department of Health, official state records, and federal documents that are available to the public.

Generating University Course Catalogs Via A Php Based Module, Chileleko Chileya, Siegwart Mayr
Campus Research Day
Catalogs are a requirement at any university. The current academic system at Southern Adventist University entails creating catalogs for the school by hand. The current model is very outdated and time consuming especially considering the database of all related school records available. The solution is a module using the PHP based framework called Yii to construct a module that will be integrated into the Southern Adventist University website that will automatically generate formatted catalogs through the frontend of the website. The previous module uses Kuali to store academic data as well as provide an API for third-party applications but was …
Creating And Evaluating Dimensional Analysis Software For University Students, Ac Hýbl
Creating And Evaluating Dimensional Analysis Software For University Students, Ac Hýbl
Campus Research Day
Most scientific disciplines depend on mathematics to varying degrees. Real-world problems often include quantifiable measurements with units. For example, chemistry, physics, and pharmacology require flawless unit conversions and dimensional homogeneity to obtain acceptable results. Students often choose to ignore units until the end of the problem-solving process, but this introduces errors and robs students of a deep understanding of units. Current tools for teaching dimensional analysis are limited both in scope and accessibility. Unit Playground addresses this issue by providing an interactive interface to experiment with units and their relationships.

Visualizing The Spread Of Western Music Throughout The World Using Big Data, Dakota C. Cookenmaster
Campus Research Day
Music, perhaps the most prevailing form of art throughout the ages, has impacted the world in countless ways. Due to the vast magnitude of published musical compositions, it is difficult to comprehend the full extent of how Western music has spread from Europe to the rest of the world. Our contribution is a presentation of the history of music throughout the ages, highlighting the countries of publication by year since the 15th century. Our visualization also exhibits the top 10 most prevalent composers within the British Library, with additional information such as the composers’ number of works and lifespan.

Differential Behaviour Of Guineagrass (Panicum Maximum Jacq.) Hybrids, With Different Al+3 Reactions, As To Major Nutrient Translocations To The Leaves, R. S. Paterniani, J. A. Usberti Jr., J. C. Werner
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Most of the Brazilian cultivated pasture fields presents soils with high Al+3 levels and liming is economically unfeasible. So, there is an urgent need for grasses with good forage yielding potentials that can withstand Al+3 deleterious effects (abnormal root development: short, thick and poorly branched roots, which are unable to effectively translocate water and essential nutrients to the leaves) (Foy, 1984); as a consequence, susceptible genetic materials have their field persistences greatly affected, mainly during drought periods. Researches on Al+3 reaction are usually compare supposedly resistant/tolerant genotypes with a resistant control check; doing so, the genotypic effect …

Animal Performance And Productivity Of New Ecotypes Of Brachiaria Brizantha In Brazil, Valéria P. B. Euclides, Manuel C. M. Macedo, Cacilda B. Do Valle, R. Flores, M. P. Oliveira
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Brazil has the competitive advantage of a very dynamic and cost effective animal production system on pastures over other countries. The pursuit for more productive forages that will result in higher quality beef at a lower cost is then justified. Brachiaria is the most important forage genus utilised in Brazil, thus an intense search for new cultivars amongst collected and introduced ecotypes from Africa is underway. Following agronomic evaluation of this material in plots, 8 pre-selected Brachiaria ecotypes were tested under intermittent grazing in paddocks (Euclides et al., 2001). Continuing on the process of cultivar development, two out of …

Development Of A Bahiagrass Paspalum Notatum Flugge With Increased Short-Day Biomass, P. Mislevy, Ann R. Blount, T. R. Sinclair
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Low herbage productivity of subtropical grasses during the short-day winter months of October through to March can place a severe burden on livestock producers in Southeastern U.S. Researchers at the University of Florida (Sinclair et al., 2001) hypothesised that the decrease in forage production might result from physiological dormancy induced by short day length. A study using artificial lights to extend the day length demonstrated that maintaining the day length at 15 hr during the short-day length period increased 'Pensacola' bahiagrass P. notatum Flugge saure Parodi forage yield 122% when compared with normal photoperiod (Mislevy et al., 2001). …

Genetic And Molecular Characterization Of Temperate And Tropical Forage Maize Inbred Lines, B. Alarcón-Zúñiga, E. Valadez-Moctezuma, T. Cervantes-Martinez, T. Cervantes-Santana, M. Mendoza‐Rodriguez
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The livestock feeding in the Central highland of Mexico is based on harvest, grazing and annual forage conservation, being forage maize the most important silage crop (Alarcón, 1995). Even though forage maize is extensively bred in Europe, USA and Asia since 1900's, this started in Mexico in the 1960's, and little is known about the genetic diversity in both agronomic and nutritive value traits. Our breeding program goals are to analyze combining ability of biomass and quality predictors and to study the genetic relationship of inbred lines between lowland tropical and temperate races from Mesa Central, by genetic and molecular …

Preliminary Performance Of Panicum Maximum Accessions And Hybrids In Brazil, Liana Jank, Rosangela M. S. Resende, S. Calixto, M. M. Gontijo Neto, V. A. Laura, Manuel C. M. Macedo, Cacilda B. Do Valle
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Due to the lack of high quality forages adapted to the distinct ecosystems in Brazil, a national network to evaluate 14 accessions, 4 hybrids and 5 commercial standards of Panicum maximum was established in 2002, in 5 regions of Brazil (states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Acre, Rondônia, Minas Gerais and in the Federal District). Staff of the Embrapa Beef Cattle group co-ordinated the network and pre-selected the accessions and hybrids (Jank, 1995; Jank et al., 2001; Resende et al., 2004). We present their performance as to leaf dry matter yield (LDMY) and leaf percentage (LP) obtained from …

Effect Of Applied Biosolids To Bahiagrass Pastures On Copper Status Of Cattle, M. E. Tiffany, L. R. Mcdowell, G. A. O'Connor, N. S. Wilkinson
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
When grazing ruminants consume forages high in Mo but adequate in S, there is a risk of molybdenosis (a Mo-induced Cu deficiency). This occurs when Mo, S, and Cu join to form Cu-thiomolybdate complexes in the rumen that are not readily absorbed (Suttle, 1991). High dietary S reduces Cu absorption, possibly due to unabsorbable Cu sulphide formation, independent from its part in thiomolybdate complexes. The use of municipal sludge (biosolids) as a pasture fertiliser is of interest since some contain high Mo which may induce Cu deficiency. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance and Cu status …
An In Vitro Investigation Of Forage Factors Which Affect The Production Of Conjugated Linoleic Acid And Trans Vaccenic Acid In The Rumen. Ii. Wilting & Cell Damage, Michael R. F. Lee, J. K. S. Tweed, Nigel D. Scollan, R. J. Dewhurst
Scollan, R. J. Dewhurst
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Previous studies have shown that cis 9 trans 11 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) concentrations are higher for summer milk produced from cows grazing fresh pastures than for winter milk when conserved forages are fed (Jahreis et al., 1997). Furthermore, Offer (2003) showed that a similar depression in milk fat CLA occurred if grass was simply cut and fed after a short wilt. This experiment investigated the effect of wilting on the production of CLA and trans vaccenic acid (TVA) in an in vitro rumen simulation, and whether any differences could be related to changes in plant structure. It was …
Effects Of Grassland Management On Herbage Lipid Composition And Consequences For Fatty Acids In Milk, Anjo Elgersma, P. Maudet, I. Witkowska, A. C. Wever
Effects Of Grassland Management On Herbage Lipid Composition And Consequences For Fatty Acids In Milk, Anjo Elgersma, P. Maudet, I. Witkowska, A. C. Wever
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Herbage provides bulk feed and is the basis for ruminant nutrition. Herbage lipids, especially C18:3, are a major source of beneficial fatty acids (FA) in milk. These desired FA are unsaturated FA such as CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), especially the isomer rumenic acid, and also vaccenic acid, both trans omega-7 FA (Ellen & Elgersma, 2004). As information on lipids in forages is scarce, effects were studied of N application level and regrowth period on the lipid concentration and FA composition of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), the most important forage in temperate climate zones. A linear relation had previously …
Effect Of Feeding L-Carnitine And Sunflower Seeds On Cla Content Of Pasture-Fed Beef, S. L. Scott, W. P. Mccaughey, K. E. Buckley
Effect Of Feeding L-Carnitine And Sunflower Seeds On Cla Content Of Pasture-Fed Beef, S. L. Scott, W. P. Mccaughey, K. E. Buckley
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Pasture finishing enhances levels of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) in beef lipids (Shanta et al. 1997). CLA (e.g., C18:2 c9, t11), formed during biohydrogenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the rumen, can reduce the incidence of heart disease, cancer and obesity in humans. However, pasture finishing cattle can reduce carcass grade. Feeding pasture-fed cattle a high-grain diet for a short finishing period (~60 d) improves grades but may reduce lipid CLA levels. A feeding regime is required that maintains the positive nutritional attributes of pasture-fed beef and improves the meat grade. The objective of this study was to investigate …
Content, Pattern And Esterification Of Fatty Acids In Fresh Grass In Relation To Extraction Solvents And Sample Storage Conditions, Marta Lourenço, Veerle Fievez
Content, Pattern And Esterification Of Fatty Acids In Fresh Grass In Relation To Extraction Solvents And Sample Storage Conditions, Marta Lourenço, Veerle Fievez
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The relatively high content of linolenic acid (C18:3 n-3) in forages has lead to research on the role of forage based feeding strategies in the production of healthier milk. In these studies, forage samples are often stored, although analysis immediately after harvest has been considered to avoid oxidative deterioration and transformation of unsaturated fatty acids (FA) (Christie, 1993; Frankel, 1998). In the current study, we evaluated the effect of different storage conditions (fresh grass samples under liquid nitrogen (liq.N2) or in a cool box during 3h or at -20ºC, -80ºC or in the extraction solvent at -20°C, during …
Designing And Building An Inverted Microscope, Daniel A. Nordquist, Karissa Carlson, Emily Grace, Eric Jones
Designing And Building An Inverted Microscope, Daniel A. Nordquist, Karissa Carlson, Emily Grace, Eric Jones
Celebration of Research
Iowa Stonybrook Lasers And DNA Course Embedded Research (ISLAND CURE) is a new research collaboration group that is focused on undergraduate research for both the students and the professors. The goal of this research collaboration was to create physics apparatuses to make biochemical measurements. One of the tools we are developing is an infrared optical tweezing system. This requires an inverted microscope to facilitate the trap. To observe one of these measurements, an inverted microscope is required to observe the sample. Inverted microscopes can be expensive, and our budget is limited. To overcome this issue, our research group decided to …

Middle School Students: Science Outreach, Math Anxiety, And Resiliency, Teyah Rivers, Karissa Carlson, Emily Grace
Celebration of Research
When students reach Middle School level academics, it is observed that their interest in STEM decreases. There are many theories that have been tested to discover why this shift occurs, however, it is thought that Math anxiety is the main contributor to this decline. Furthermore, there have been indications suggesting that Math anxiety is closely related to Resiliency. In this study, we are interested in looking at the relationship between Math anxiety and Resiliency in Middle School students. In doing so, a science outreach day was designed to both increase Middle school student's interest and attitudes interest towards STEM. The …
Transubstantiation And Physics: Validity In Science Vs. Validity In Religion, Martha Stein, Emily Grace
Transubstantiation And Physics: Validity In Science Vs. Validity In Religion, Martha Stein, Emily Grace
Celebration of Research
Catholics believe Transubstantiation is the process of converting bread and wine into Jesus’ body and blood. There are no physical signs of change, but the substance changes. From a scientific perspective, there is no application of heat or light and no physical sign of change, therefore there is no change. Physics as we understand at an undergraduate level assumes Earth is a closed system. This assumption no longer applies if there can be substance change without physical modification from an energy source. I refuse to believe that science and religion are unrelated entities, yet I accept that this unexplainable phenomenon …

1 in every 15-30 million nucleotides can be considered a mutation in healthy individuals. Replication of damaged DNA leads to genetic mutations. Genetic mutations lead to disorders and cancer. Rev1, a Y family polymerase, prevents minor mutations, such as abasic sites and exocyclic guanines, in the template strand from shutting down the process of replication. Our mutant Rev1, R324G/L325G, has replaced both the arginine located on nucleotide base number 324 and the leucine on nucleotide base number 325 with glycine. The arginine and leucine have more complex side chains groups with specific hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties. By replacing them with glycine, the …

Progress In Developing Laser Tweezers And Control Systems, Gabriel Andres, Karissa Carlson, Emily Grace, Eric Jones
Celebration of Research
Optical tweezers are a Nobel Prize-winning technology capable of trapping microscopic and sub-microscopic particles using a laser beam. They can be used heavily in many different capacities within our organization and the research collaboration of ISLAND CURE. Some possible uses would be making measurements on DNA that we have synthesized. While that one of goals, another main reason for completing this would be to make this technology available at other smaller research institutions that cannot afford prebought systems. This would allow for more undergraduate research and opportunities all around the states. While executing our plan for developing our system while …

Undergraduate Studies To Design And Build Dna Structure To Be Used By Optical Tweezer, Daiki Jonouchi, Tyler Nhan, Karissa Carlson, Emily Grace
Celebration of Research
Our research team, ISLAND CURE, is the team to design and build a biological instrument, optical tweezer (OT), with a limited budget. The optical tweezer is an apparatus that moves micro-objects by using laser light. It allows the user to create and control the pico-newton, which is an essential force to move micro-objects. Our research is to design a target DNA sequence (Fig 4.), which our optical tweezer will control. To apply optical tweezer technology to living organisms, DNA is the essential first step. In this research, our team focus is to calculate the necessary forces to unzip DNA with …
